A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30

Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

Orpheus in the Underworld.......2000-03-17

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

Moved to review.......2007-06-18

I've recently pulled out my copy of "One Way Ticket to Hell...And Back" to verify a few parts of the title track (which I have been singing (apparently successfully) at karaoke (GASP!)). Though I've always enjoyed this album, I was surprised to find out how much better the album is than I remembered. "Dinner Lady Arms", with its "sensitive" verses full of chiming guitars and '80s-on-the-Sunset-Strip chords (not to mention its Boston-styled acoustic-guitar-chugging-next-to-stacks-of-Marshalls and über-harmonies) should be a summer single, and has been treated as such in my car stereo. "Knockers" is a fun number (that does *not* refer to, um, blinkers) that seems to best recall the first album. "Is It Just Me?" and the title track are fist-raising numbers that must absolutely kick solid a** live (because they do a fine job of it on album), and "English Country Garden" is just manic. Anyone wanting catchy choruses, walls of guitars and well-prepared basslines (not to mention excellently-recorded drums) come right here.

But what REALLY prompted me to write a review were other reviewers' comments that The Darkness does not surpass their influences. I want to put a stop to this before another GREAT band is basically ruined in an attempt to become truly "original". Safely put, "original" flew out the window when everybody and their dog saw their back catalogue released on CD. Lindsey Buckingham was taking inspiration from the Everly Brothers on the verses to "Go Your Own Way", Boston's Tom Scholz has admitted to being inspired by the James Gang's "Tend My Garden" for his classic "More Than a Feeling", Marvin Gaye's smash single "What's Goin' On" was stalled by the brass at Motown because they thought it was too "old hat" for their scene ("Nobody does scat anymore!"), and no one will ever convince me that '80s hair metal bands such as Poison and Motley Crüe didn't take a page from '70s glam (and not only in fashion). The reason why these bands/artists were considered original (as compared to maybe the Darkness) is that their influences were kept relatively obscure (I mean, come on, how many youth today know of "Tend My Garden"?). Today's discerning listener knows of Slade, Boston and Queen beforehand (not to mention many a band who've unsuccessfully tried to match this powerful trio). But please LAY OFF The Darkness for being "unoriginal"! I will fully proclaim my Revisionist's Cry of "Recognize the good, eschew the bad, and make it better this time around!" And that is a challenge to which I feel The Darkness answer in spades. And to add to that the fact that they are often tongue-in-cheek, it makes their harmonized operatic falsetto vocal parts and bent-note guitarmonies (check out that "WHOOMWHOOMwhoomwhoom" effect little over a quarter into the solo of "Dinner Lady Arms" after the orgasmic squeal of three guitars in one... sheer genius, whoever recognized that one) even MORE appealing. This is an album that took time and effort to create, and just like the first Boston album, all that sweat paid off. The reason why I am not giving it five stars is because half the album has yet to plant itself into my memory (I'm too busy listening to the other half), but this is already two to four great songs more than a lot of '80s hair band albums... and would you give Boston's "Don't Look Back" anything less than four stars, even if Side 2 is undercooked? Didn't think so. RAWK ON!

A Throwback to Rock Glory.......2007-05-14

With the driving guitar riffs and screeching vocals, The Darkness represents a throwback to the glory days of bands such as AC-DC and Van Halen. This is excellent music to drive fast to, or to work out to. I discovered after being pulled in by their one big recent hit "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" from their album "Permission to Land". After hearing the tracks on this album, I realized I had stumbled on a hidden gem of a band.

They should have broken up after Permission to Land.......2007-04-25

I read somewhere that The Darkness almost broke up after the success of their first CD. They should have if this is their idea of a follow-up. Where did the fun and great riffs of Permission to Land go? These songs are awful. They wander round and round and never go anywhere. Instead of the silly lyrics of the first CD, sometimes here they try to sound serious and end up sounding ridiculous. The music is trying hard to be Queen but that's a unique style and hard to pull off. The Darkness come away sounding as if they have no idea how to write a song. They should have stuck to the straight ahead approach they employed for Permission to Land. This was one of the worst music purchases I ever made.

A vast improvement over Permission to Land.......2007-02-20

I was skeptical about this CD at first as I had listened to The Darkness' first album, Permission to Land, and didn't care for it at all. With this album, however, The Darkness has grown on me and I highly recommend it -- especially to fans of Queen. At times I get the feeling they're actually channeling Queen through their harmonies, Dan Hawkins' guitar, and Justin Hawkins' falsetto. You'll either love the falsetto or hate it, but you'll have to admit the guy's got talent! My favorite track is 'Hazel Eyes,' which has a sort of Celtic-gone-wild feel to it.

Great Sohpmore Effort.......2007-01-10

I love this album, but don't really know why. The Darkness once again takes their Sweet meets Queen sound and comes up with an album of songs that simply will not leave your head. The Queen comparisons are even stronger on this disc as long time Queen Producer Roy Thomas Baker does the production chores on the album. Instrumentally these guys are nothing spectacular, but put all of the parts in the right places in order to come up with a winning formula. The band never takes itself too seriously and some of the songs, such as "Knockers" and "Bald" are hilarious. The title track rocks with a song about cocaine (band leader Justin Hawkins recently entered rehab for his problem with it. "English Country Garden", "Hazel Eyes", "Blind Man" "Is It Just Me", "Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" are all solid rock songs. Justin Hawkins uses his upper register falsetto more on this album than on the first, and your mileage will vary as to whether you find it annoying or enduring. Overall I really enjoy this disc, and it is a great one to crank up in your car.

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month!That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included,especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though,there is a complain:i can't understand,why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song,the cues from the Bacchaen festival,music from Deja Vou All Over Again,where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest!That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style,should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes.It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song,will agree with me!Mmmm!

A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

Much better than the debute!.......2004-01-18

OMG I actually downloaded this album before i bought it.... After I listened to the mp3s i almost immediatly ordered this CD hahaha VERRYY Big improvement over the debute "Beware of the Heavens"! The vocals are amazing! The guitar work is totally killer and Kim sings like she will kick you in the nuts hahaha. Overall VERY good cd... but could be better (hence the 4) Comeon guys you have Alexi I know you can do sooo much better! I await the next cd anxiously :-)

Well written songs from Finland.......2002-09-21

I see Sinergy as a cross between Children of Bodom of Nightwish, and I think most people would agree with that. There is a style that seems to appear in all Finnish metal; mainly fast, symphonic choruses, with European folk roots. I started listening to Sinergy because I am a huge Children of Bodom fan, and I wanted to check out Alexi's other band. The Children are probably my third fav. band behind Maiden and Symphony X. This album is pretty good. I like how the songs are written. Clever melodies just like the Children. If you like the Finnish metal style, Children of Bodom and Nightwish are by far the best. Sinergy has a great sound though. Some people don't like female vocals but I think it is very creative and ads a great flavor to metal.

good gothic metal.......2002-07-10

Good songs and the singer does well for a female doing metal. I could certainly live without her two annoying little scream intros before the first two songs. The band is tight and talented. Reminds me of iced earth only the songs are just better. It strikes me odd though, gothic song after song about "the empire shall be defended, the 4th world is thy magical kingdom, his majestys iron hand hath guided us unto glory" then all of a sudden the last song is some teenage style "oh baby baby...dont leave me hangin on the telephone". Wassup wit dat???

Awesome Metal!!!!!!.......2001-12-18

Heaven and Hell is one of the funnest, well written heavy power metal albums I have heard. The musicianship is outstanding (the Children of Bodem guitar play absolughtly wails!!) and the female vocals are the best since Patt Benitar. Metal lives!!!

This is a mediocre album at best. The music is ok but the singer really (...) - voice is sloppy. That's what has ruined the whole cd.

Blowing speakers to hell and back.......2005-08-29

The song, Last night, on this cd is one of the first cds I remember I could make our windows shake to. I did blow our family's speakers to this song when I was younger. It doesn't seem easy to find these songs besides on this cd. "Last night" has great bass and a good groove. Thank goodness for Amazon's preview listening. Now, everybody can hear it.

Back home M.C.s grinding trying to make a come up........2003-06-06

Man, we used to bump them back in the day while holding stereo contests. This brings back memories! It's a great album and a perfect example of the TRS-808 capabilities once thumping bass lines were discovered. Great beats combined with lyrics and sampling--I've waited for years to find this on CD.

What a great line-up of singers on this disc! Although Campions' songs are written as solo songs he stated at the time that they may also be enjoyed as part songs. On this CD they are tastefully mixed both vocally and instrumentally. There are trios with soprano, tenor, baritone and lute where the lute is treated almost like another voice part. Each of the singers has a solo or two and Chance has several. It is also good to keep in mind that Thomas Campion (l567-l620) was a poet as well as a musician who had the capability of putting together the two art forms, words and music. As he says, "lovingly coupled together." From over 100 songs it was difficult to select only 25, but Campion helped us by placing his prize songs often at the beginning of a volume. And it is certainly appropriate to present these chosen songs with varied vocal combinations. My favorites are the last three on the album: "The Sypres curten of the night is spread" (Michael Chance); "Author of Light" (quartet:(Elliott-soprano;Chance-countertenor;Padmore-tenor;Harvey -baritone) and "Never weather-beaten Saile" (Chance).
