Album Description
Special low price import edition of his 1990 album released through MCA. 'I defend The Hard Way to the death, because I almost died in the process of making it', Steve Earle told a reporter in 2000 & he wasn't just being melodramatic. Earle's well-documented addiction to heroin & cocaine was spiraling out of control in 1990 while he was holed up in Memphis recording The Hard Way. 13 tracks in all.
Customer Reviews:
Bleak and beautiful.......2007-07-06
Most people don't write or play so well without any impediments. "Hard Way" came to be during the worst of Earle's drug addiction and it's clearly a crucible time for him. Writing's amazing as always--singing and orchestration are also good. Of course, as many folks way, Steve can't make a bad CD.
"Billy Austin" is one of the hardest songs I've ever heard. Earle can write and sing from the point of view of an outlaw better than almost anyone I've heard. "Justice in Ontario" continues that theme. Ironic Earle himself followed this CD with time in prison.
This CD's labeled country, but I'm seeing too many rock elements to leave it strictly at that.
Hey Nashville, This aint country.......2007-01-03
For all the fog and dim that engulfed his personal life, Steve Earle found a way to take the words and music in his head to the studio and bring it to life with a undefineable mix of growling guitars, flittering mandolins, punctuated snare hits, with his distinctive vocal approach that defies the listener to dare question his honesty. First person, "I am living this song" attitude throughout, it invites you to participate in more than just a casual manner. Earle moves closer to his own influences, invoking George Harrison's Gretsch guitar jangle and Beatles harmonies in Promise You Anything, and then on to the current darker places with "Esmeralda's Hollywood"; revealing his own shadows. Included is the masterful "Billy Austin" exploring the intracacies of a murderer's thinking process and the subsequent followup, "Justice in Ontario.
Different from his first offerings, in that pedal steel prominence has been replaced with authoritative six strings attacked with more than a nod to the arm flailing of a Pete Townsend, The Hard Way brings us straight ahead rock and roll. Borrowing a crunch from fellow Texan Billy Gibbons, "This Highway" starts out with a blues rock riff and a narrative that warns of danger and salvation at the same time only to resurface in the apt titled, "West Nashville Boogie". "Country Girl" takes us back to a honkey tonk setting and then he hints at the forebearer of his Celtic fascinations to come, Regular Guy. Earle picks up whatever instrument serves his purpose and cares not one iota if it fits any notion of formula.
An epic in terms of dramatic pacing and tempo, Steve Earle arrives near the top of America's song writing precipace and gives us a look over the edge. A "must have" collection for anyone who is serious about whats behind the music.
The Best Album Ever Recorded.......2006-10-14
This album is autobiographical. Drugs, guns, and anger. This was Steve Earles world when he wrote and recorded these songs. Steve Earle will offer no appoligies, His words of wisdom, If you don't like it don't listen. His fans however are fiercly loyal, if you don't believe that, just say something bad about Steve Earle around one. Even if you have never heard of Steve Earle, and because of his politics theres a good chance you haven't, buy this CD. There has never been a better album recorded, in any genre of music. And there never will be.
Great songs, too much bombast.......2006-09-30
Steve Earle was coming off the release of "Copperhead Road," before he made this album. That disc showed him turning from a countrified Bruce Springsteen to a straight-out rocker with an eye for the mindset of the underdog. "The Hard Way" continues the trend - detailed story-songs like "Justice In Ontario" and "Billy Austin," an anti-death penalty tale that is among Earle's top works. The Dukes sound like bobcats in a bag snarling to get out, all broken glass and motorcycle engines (one of which would have better if it had been absent from the song "This Highway's Mine"). Some of the production seems done just to made Earle seem big and bad, and Id be rather interested in hearing how a song like "Hopeless Romantics" would sound if it were included on one of his later discs. Listeners get a sense of some of Earle's personal problems in songs such as "West Nashville Boogie." It's a wonderful album, but with some flaws not present on other Earle discs.
Steve Earle - The Hard Way.......2006-08-08
The title of the album probably best describes how Steve was doing things when this album was released. I think this album along with Copperhead Road & his earlier releases are definitely his best works. Personally this album is one of my favorite Steve Earle albums & should be in any true Steve Earle cd collection.

Bodyrockers cd single "I like the way".......2006-07-05
I really like the original version of "I like the way you move", it's a great song - dance/rock style that really gets you wanting to move around and have a dance. I wasn't too keen on the alternate mixed versions of the same song - it's like, why would you remix and change something that is already good. But the original version is great.
something different.......2006-02-10
i heard this on tv during the 10 anniversary of Victoria's Secret fashion show...and never got the tune out of my head. in fact, i have kept that tape just to hear this song. i ordered this cd, and th eonly "flaw" i can say is that the "main/middle part" of the song must have been extended for the tv show version. but it is a fun tune and i like it a lot overall!
Its not rock, its dance/house.......2005-09-27
Just cos it has guitars doesnt mean its rock, its a club anthem championed by techno DJ Pete Tong which was a HUGE hit in Europe and UK even if it didnt deserve to.
It's very good even if your not a rock fan!.......2005-07-18
I'm not a fan of rock but this song is very good! It doesn't have strong electro-pop constantly as it starts off quite quiet and it builds up to a steady sound. The music isn't constantly pounding away rock that hurts your head which is great!
The reason why I seem to like it is because they use that music for a TV Programme on Living TV! It's got me hooked this song! Take it from me, it's great, so buy it! #I LIKE THE WAY YOU MOVE!!!#

I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.
THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17
Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.
Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.
Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.
In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.
The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.
For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.
So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.
Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17
This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.
Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07
I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.
MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11
THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15
THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

Customer Reviews:
ABSOLUTELY GREAT!.......2007-02-06
I am not exactly a musical fan, but KRISTINA FRAN DUVEMALA has been sending shivers down my spine since I first listened to it some 5 years ago. Don't mind if you don't understand any Swedish, just buy this cd set, sit back and enjoy time and again. TIP: download a translation, this will make you enjoy KRISTINA even more. GREAT STORY, GREAT MUSIC, GREAT SINGING. And start reading the EMIGRANT NOVELS by Vilhelm Moberg on which this musical was based...
Ja! A pinnacle of musical achievement........2006-04-18
This is simply one of the greatest pieces of musical theatre ever written. I hate to compare it with Chess, which is also one of my favorites -- instead I'll say that the two musicals are quite complimentary and showcase different aspects of Benny & Bjorn's talents. Kristina's music is more operatic, serious, lush, and dramatic, with rock replaced to a large extent by folk and classical elements.
A nice thing about Kristina is getting to listen carefully to delicate, subtle touches in the music that aren't as easy to hear in music with a rock emphasis. Kristina is very driven by melody and gorgeous harmony (not to say Chess doesn't have amazing melody and harmony as well -- but think of Kristina as focusing most of its energy on the musical elements of songs like "You and I" in Chess.) Du Maste Finnas, the climactic moment of the show, is especially moving because it reverts back to a more classic Chess/ABBA sound that has been somehow fused with the more operatic character of the rest of the show. The key changes are quite surprising and the music is beautiful. When the chorus starts rocking, we are treated to a moment with an unmistakeable Benny Andersson piano figure that sounds just like the quick repeated chords in Dancing Queen or The Winner Takes it All -- so within this one song, we move gradually from a super-dramatic orchestral introduction to a brief ABBA moment and back to the operatic world. Somehow this works beautifully.
Kristina does leave one wanting more as a non-Swedish speaker. I hope an English production and cast album will appear to help cement the importance of this score in English-speaking countries. One can hope that perhaps Tim Rice will help out again on the translation. Kristina also impresses so much that I am impatient to hear what B&B come up with next!
Breathtaking.......2005-08-31
I have had this Musical on CD from the day of release, I do not speak a word of Swedish.
This is simply a Masterpiece, both with Music & Lyrics. I believe the Musical is coming to Broadway 2006/2007. With the english translation this will be huge. I can only say Mamma Mia is a Hit. So will this.

B&B's masterpiece.......2005-03-26
This is serious music, let me say this first of all.
Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus addressed their considerable talents to compacting Vilhelm Moberg's tetralogy "The Emigrants" (a masterpiece as well) into a piece of musical theatre and have succeeded beyond credence.
It is an emotional work, to which some wonderful singers contribute. I shall mention Helen Sjöholm (Kristina) as representative of them all. Her "Du måsta finnas" is as moving as anything I have heard in music.
The compositional techniques used go across the entire range. There are anthems (of course: nobody can compose them like Benny), there are full-blown orchestral pieces, drums, organs, pianos, guitars are used.
And there is the utterly heart-rending conclusion "I Gott Bevar", which is simple and very pure, which I am listening to as I write and which again brings tears to my eyes and ever will.
It seems Kristina will be coming to America. May she arrive as pure as she is in this recording.
In my opinion, this is music of the highest order.
Charley
Great !.......2004-08-11
I don't understand a single word of Swedish but this music..is wonderful! In addition, Swedish lyrics gives it an "exotic" touch.
If you like musicals, or just music, you can't miss this.

When you want your JC Superstar to kick butt, get this version!.......2006-03-09
Easily the most alive and exciting Jesus Christ Superstar ever. The music and vocals are absolutely astounding and both were updated in a completely fresh and non-offensive manner. My only regret is that there is not a complete version of this cast anywhere. We used this version as a temlpate for a production my Alma Matter put on 4 years ago. Order this disc if you are a fan of musicals, Jesus, or rock music in general.
I've not heard a better version yet..........2006-02-11
I went to see the production that this recording comes from in 1992, at the age of twelve. I still have the memory of King Herod's song with tap dancers in shimmering silver sequined mini dresses with bright green lights and strobes. I loved it so much that my parents bought me this CD. I still have it now, at the age of 25, and I'm still impressed with it. I've heard other versions of JCS and seen several performances both amateur and professional, and none come up to it's standard in my opinion. The performers involved, John Farnham, Kate Cebrano, Russell Morris, John Waters, et al may not be widely known outside of Australia, but they're very highly regarded here, and that's the rest of the world's loss. This is a highlights album, so it doesn't have everything from the show, notably missing is This Jesus Must Die, which has David Gould, as Caiaphas. He has the deepest voice I've ever heard and really makes his presence felt in Hosanna. Now I wouldn't necessarily proclaim this to be the definitive version, as I've not heard every version that's around, its certainly a very good version and well worth a listen.
This album makes me want to move to Australia.......2005-09-14
I saw a regional theatre performance of Jesus Christ Superstar the other night and was pretty impressed with the music and the fact that it's a real "rock opera" with screaming high notes and rock drums and guitars and everything. My friend had a few recordings of JCC so I decided to sample some of them. First I tried the original concept album which was a little hippie-ish for me and then I listened to the movie version which I wasn't terribly impressed with.
I then put in the Australian Cast Highlights album and was completely mesmerized from the first note on. The job they did re-orchestrating the score is nothing short of amazing. You can really hear the Australian influence in the songs. It has this celtic/aboriginal flavor to it which makes the whole recording sound primal and majestic.
I used to have this opinion that Australia was a little backward when it came to music, not to mention Andrew Lloyd Webber was overrated. This recording has completely changed my opinion on both. It sounds incredibly fresh, exciting and emotional and NEW despite the fact that JCC came out in the 70's and this album came out in 1992.
The leads are the best I've heard so far. Judas does have a little bit of "LOOK AT ME I'M A ROCK SINGER" syndrome but he's so impassioned and he sings rock so well that you're willing to overlook it....or I am anyway since apparently I would sever ties to my homeland to move down-under because of one recording.
I'm a singer, and Jesus is a little depressing to listen to because you know only a select few on earth are possesed of a voice like the one he has. Pretty damn flawless. I really don't think you'll find a musical theatre rock tenor like this guy. If he isn't at least quasi-famous there's something wrong with the music industry.
Mary's delivery is a little "clipped" at times but she's still the best I've heard. Haven't quite heard that perfect Mary yet but she comes very close.
But really, the "best" JCC recording just depends on one's personal tastes. Still I defy you to say this recording isn't at least one of the best.
This will change your opinion of Weber..........2005-08-13
I am not a big fan of Weber... however, i do love JCS. But the music always tinkered a bit on the cheesy side. Then WAY back in 1994 my roommate was sent this version and i fell in love. when she and i departed in 1996, i was sad that i had to seperate from the beloved cd. 9 years later, i still miss it and now am purchasing it. get it
get it.
get it!
A Fresh, new Superstar.......2005-05-28
I'm a huge fan of Jesus Christ Superstar, and I have heard many renditions, most of which have similar orchestrations with very few changes. Ever since the 2000 movie starring Glenn Carter came out, the shows that followed have gotten worse and worse because they were made to be just like Gale Edward's production (which sucked in my opinion).
And then I found this- the 92 Aussie Version. This was one of the greatest recordings of JCS ever. The orchestrations are updated; you can hear more 'rock' in it; the drums and electric gutiars are more audibal, and everything has a new feel to it. The only thing I have to critizie is that some of the songs (like Everything's Alright) have lost their dramatic edge. Instead of the orchestra swelling after Jesus says his bit, it just reverts to the same music that played through the whole song.
And the singers are stellar- John Farnham (Jesus) has a great rock voice. He doesn't rip off of other people who have played Jesus, making a new type entirly his own, which I haven't heard for a long time. Although he can make it up to the High G in Gethsemane, his shout of 'Why Should I Die?' worked just as well; to top it off, he added a soulful 'Why' after that. In some places I prefer Darryl Lovegrove, the man who succeeded John Farnham after the 92 tour, but overall I enjoyed Farnham's proformance.
John Stevens is also excellent as Judas. He has a lot of emoation in his voice (it also sounds very rockish). But, sadly he can't compare with the great Carl Anderson, or the amazing John English, the original Aussie Judas. He rips a lot off of Andersons proformance. But overall, John Stevens is great as Judas.
The women who performs Mary (I can't remember her name) does a fairly good job, although she doesn't have the range that Yvonne Eliman does.
I don't care what anyone says- Pontious Pilate is good.
Angry Anderson does an excellent job playing Herod- I love the new heavy-metal approach to the song; he doesn't amuse me very much like Mark Haldow did (from the New Zealand Cast that featured the same music), but I enjoyed it all the same.
Simon Zealots is the best I've heard in a while. He ditchs the insane Larry Marshall act (which was funny, but it did get annyoing), and the flamboyent Tony Vincet act (which sucked horribly).
Overall, I highly suggest this recording to JCS fans old and new.
Also, check out:
-The Motion Picture (1973) with Ted Neely, Carl Anderson Yvonnie Eliman, Barry Dennon and Bob Bingom- one of the best casts ever.
-New Zealand Cast (1994) with Darryl Lovegrove, Jay Lag^aia, Marget Urlich, Frankie Stevens and Mark Haldow- the cast that succeeded the Aussie 92 Cast, using the same orchestrations as this one.
-Original Cast Recording (1970) with Ian Gillian, Murray Head, Yvonnie Eliman, and Barry Dennon- the first and one of the best.
-The Original Broadyway Cast (1971) with Jeff Fenholt, Ben Vareen, Yvonnie Eliman, Bob Bingom, and Barry Dennon- although the orchestrations are sped up, this is a must-buy; the first ever staged production.

Frankie Miller
Long Way Home
Jerkin Crocus Records
When you are asked to write a review of a new CD by a record company it appears to generate within the reviewer an ability to wax lyrical and become too full of their own self importance. This review will not fall into that category at all (I hope!).
When I play this album I keep coming back to a very simple phrase to sum it up. It is a belter and should be honoured with a place within any self respecting music lovers collection.
From the opening powerhouse that is Guilty Of The Crime to the official closer of the poignant It's A Long Way Home there are no weak tracks on this collection. The one annoying thing is the fact that there is a hidden track. The song is fine but why do record companies do this? It is silly, and not what the public wants. If a song is good enough to be included it should be selectable.
Now you will well be aware that Frankie had major health problems from 1994 but this collection is no trawl through poor off cuts or rough demo material. This is quality with a capital Q.
An absolute corker, this album knocks so much of today's crop of musicians efforts in to the minor leagues. Collaborating with Joe Walsh (Eagles), Nicky Hopkins (Rolling Stones & Jeff Beck Group), Chrissie Stewart (Full House) and Ian Wallace (Bob Dylan & King Crimson) this bands just powers their way through a raft of 11 selectable songs and they rock.
Frankie at the time of these recordings was in terrific form both as a singer and a writer. Some are co-writes with Will Jennings and they will have you gasping with amazement at the strength of the songs and in particular the performances.
This CD deserves loads of airplay. Don't buy this album thinking about Frankie and his brain haemorrhage. Frankie is doing well and still writing. Buy it for the cracking album it is and no other reason. Long Way Home is on Jerkin' Crocus Records.
Bring Frankie Miller and his music into your life. It will make you feel great.

It's Been A Long Time Comin'............2006-10-10
Anyone familiar with Frankie Miller already know that he's a supurb vocalist and songwriter. That being said, this collection of previously unreleased tunes make you hope for more releases from his archives. Miller hasn't recorded an album since his mid '90's brain heamorrage, but this album shows how deep his catalog runs. Frankie and his team have seen fit to release some great songs on this one, with the centerpiece being the classic Jim Reeves song "He'll Have To Go", which now is a classic mid-tempo rocker, thanks to a great arrangement (backed by Joe Walsh, the late Nicky Hopkins, Ian Wallace, and Frankie's longtime bassist, Chrissie Stewart), and Frankie's killer vocals. Among the variety are other chugging rockers like "Guilty Of The Crime", "Over The Line", the Dylanesque "Lies Tell The Best Truth Of All", and some lyriclly crafted tunes with Will Jennings (Eric Clapton, etc.) "You Always Saw Blue Skies", and the title track. This is a deep, well crafted album, not a bunch of scraps......I can only hope there are future releases planned if they are as good as this one. Oh yeah, there's also a hidden track at the disc's close, "Prince Charles Told Me Not To Name Drop" (or something like that), so let the CD play it's way off.

Customer Reviews:
MPG is Marvin's best '60's ablum, TTWLI is good too!.......2004-08-03
These import two-fers' are terrific. They feature terrific sound quality and great packaging. The albums included are:
M.P.G. (1969) **** (4 out of 5) Despite Marvin's long stream of hit singles, this was his first album to actually crack the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart and is his biggest seller of the sixties. M.P.G. reteams Marvin with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine-producer Norman Whitfield, and the two manage to overcome the typical Motown formula and create a surprisingly focused work.
A sense of consistency (which is what's missing from most sixties Motown efforts) is brought to the set by the blisteringly lean arrangements and some of Marvin's most impassioned vocals ever. The big smash hit is "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" (#4 Pop, #1 R&B), which is easily one of his best singles. The song's bouncy timbre made it the perfect (and somewhat surprising) follow up to the bone-chilling smash "I Heard It Through The Grapevine."
Some irresistible light blues is brought to the set with the incredible cuts "Seek And You Shall Find," "More Than A Heart Can Stand," and the hit "End Of The Road" (#40 Pop, #7 R&B). The disc plays out in a surprising satisfying manner, with the clever refrain of "Only A Lonely Man Would Know" laying down nicely beside the funky "It's A Bitter Pill To Swallow." The only tracks that miss the boat is the forgettable cover of "This Magic Moment" (which is also placed too early in the album) and the banal "Memories," which has nothing to distinguish it aside from Marvin's powerful performance. Thankfully these two missteps are listenable and M.P.G. emerges as Marvin's best solo album of the sixties.
THAT'S THE WAY LOVE IS (1970) **** (4 out of 5) Produced by Norman Whitfield again, THAT'S THE WAY LOVE IS continues the excellence of M.P.G. and is possibly the most underrated album from the first decade of Marvin's career. The tense and mournful title track (#7 Pop, #2 R&B) was another hit single, cracking the Top Ten on both charts. The formulaic "How Can I Forget" (#41 Pop, #18 R&B) was almost a hit, but it (along "No More Tears") is actually one of the disc's weakest moments. The sweeping "Gonna Give Her All The Love I Got (which received some airplay as the flip side of the "How Can I Forget" single) is really splendid and should have been a A-side release. Four covers appear on this recording, and they may be the most surprising songs here.
Marvin's renditions of "Yesterday" and "Abraham, Martin, and John" are stunning and absolutely heartbreaking. Shockingly enough, both manage to top the original recordings (by The Beatles and Dion, respectively). The remaining two covers ("Groovin'" and "Cloud Nine") are much less effective, but they're perfectly solid. Throw in the vintage Motown sound of "Gonna Keep Tryin' Till I Win You're Love" and a few other catchy numbers and you have another excellent Gaye-Whitfield release. On this record, there are flashes of the brilliance that would come later in Marvin's career; although it's still pretty unbelievable that the peerless masterpiece WHAT'S GOING ON would be released in little less than a year.
Two classic albums from Marvin.......2003-08-09
The first album featured here, MPG, was released in 1969 and the second, That's the way love is, was released in 1970.
The collection opens with Too busy thinking about my baby, a top five hit for Marvin in Britain and America. The follow-up single, That's the way love is, was atop ten American hit but missed the chart completely in Britain. How can I forget you became a minor American hit, but in Britain it was put on the B-side of Abraham Martin and John (my favorite Marvin Gaye song). The tribute to Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and John F Kennedy gave Marvin a top ten UK hit, but it was Smokey Robinson and the Miracles who had the American hit with that song. From these two albums, there was one other minor American hit, The end of our road, which was not released as a single in Britain.
The other tracks making up these albums include covers of This magic moment (Drifters), Yesterday (Beatles) and Grooving (Rascals) as well as songs that had been hits for other Motown artists and some interesting but obscure original songs.
If you already have one of Marvin's hits collections and wish to explore further, you will certainly enjoy the two albums presented here.
2 Great Lost Gems from Motown.......2002-09-14
These 2 albums from Marvin Gaye's late 60's output are great! "That's the Way Love Is" & "Too Busy Thinking..." are the 2 major hits and they are both great, revealing 2 different sides of Mr. Gaye. The former is done in an intense, brooding "Grapevine" style, while the latter is a good time uptemo song which sounds like something Sam Cooke might have done. Many people complain that Motown kept re-doing the same songs with its artists. Personally, I like comparing the different versions. His take on "I Wish It Would Rain" doesn't take anything from the Temptations' original, but is still a very good version with a harder edge. Several other songs "Keep on Tryin" & "Give Her All the Love I've Got" have been done before by the Temptations and other artists, but Mr. Gaye's versions are very enjoyable. He also does "End of Our Road" (Originally done by Gladys Knight & Pips)in a similar style to his version of "Grapevine" and it is a great track. Some of the non-Motown covers are quite good, particularly "Groovin" and "Yesterday". Also, his version of "Abraham, Martin & John" is very moving. His version of "This Magic Moment" is nice, too. Some of the other "filler" ("Bitter Pill" "Only A Lonely Man" "Memories, etc) is all quite good. I also have the "In The Groove" (later "I Heard it Through the Grapevine") CD and taken together these 3 CD's are a great listening experience for any Motown/Soul fan.
Great sound - great packaging.......2001-06-05
These are the last two solo CD's Marvin released before truly breaking out on his own ("What's Going On"). While "MPG" has a a number of gems on it, namely "Too Busy Thinking...", "The End of Our Road", and "I Got To Get To California", the overall production is sometimes shady ("Try My True Love") and it makes the album feel more like the single track sessions that they were, instead of a cohesive suite of songs.
By contrast, "That's The Way Love Is" is pure genius. The entire album is produced and nine of the twelve songs are co-written by Norman Whitfield. I have combed this list of twelve tracks trying to single a few out for merit, but there really is no reason to, it's all top notch. By itself, this CD would rate 4.5 to 5 stars.
As an additional note, for the collector's/audiophiles out there, the entire "That's The Way Love Is" album was previously available in a 1994 remastered version titled "The Norman Whitfield Sessions". The sound on this release is considerably clearer, and makes it well worth the purchase.
There's really only one question left to ask...
Why can't we get these and other Motown out of print releases in the U.S?
