First time on CD for this long lost melodic rock gem from this New Jersey act fronted by Jack Ponti, friend & former band mate of Jon Bon Jovi (who sings backup on a version of 'Shot Through The Heart', the song later appeared on a Bon Jovi album). Digitally remastered & featuring sleeve notes by Ponti. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.

Surgin's When Midnight Comes album is most noteworthy for its Bon Jovi connection. Guitarist/songwriter Jack Ponti was in an early band with Jon Bon Jovi, they co-wrote the song Shot Through the Heart (which appears on this album as well as Bon Jovi's self-titled debut), and Jon Bon Jovi even provides background vocals for this album.

Bon Jovi connections, aside, When Midnight Comes is an enjoyable album, and a perfect example of that early 80's melodic rock sound. It's one of those albums where the song titles tell you exactly what kind of music you're going to get (if the band photo hadn't already done so) - big hooks, catchy melodies, and plenty of keyboards. It's very reminiscent of early Bon Jovi (big surprise) and Aldo Nova. Russell Arcara's vocals are a bit weak, but they fit the album pretty well.

The style may be a bit dated, but Zoom Club's 2001 remastered edition breathes new life into the album. When Midnight Comes is worth seeking out, especially if you're an 80's rock fan.

Surgin obviously never achieved the success Bon Jovi did, but they didn't exactly fade away either. Arcara would go on to join Prophet, and Ponti would have some success behind the scenes for bands like Babylon AD and Baton Rouge.
