This album arrived shortly after singer Andy Bell's revelation that he had been living with HIV for more than six years, suffering from debilitating pain. It's no wonder the music carries a more somber tone than the sugar-smacked synth-pop of '80s hits "Chain of Love" and "Blue Savannah." But it's hardly a gloomy affair. Yes, there is a more ominous tone to lyrics like "The tears that are falling, there's no room for doubt." And yes, the choruses aren't quite as chaotic. But for the most part this is vintage Erasure, right down to the Casio-sounding keyboards that permeate tracks like "Here I Go Impossible Again" and the ABBA imbued cheek of "Don't Say You Love Me." Erasure is clearly a band too engrossed by life to be knocked down by its mundane realities. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2006-11-11

This is another excellent Erasure album. I do not think this is a comeback album. Erasure has never released a bad album...it is just that all of the albums haven't necessarily gone mainstream. It is understandable that not everyone likes that Erasure still has an 80's sound. I think that good music is good music no matter what the time or sound is. They don't necessarily fit in with a lot of the junk that is currently on the radio and that is not really a bad thing. Erasure is not a band that will release an album with one good single just to make a million dollars like many of today's artists. I await every new Erasure release with the same excitement that I did 20 years ago.

4 out of 5 stars The Erasure I Know and Love........2006-11-10

This is a really good album and I would definitely recommend it to any Erasure fan. It's not as good as their very best, but definitely as good as their second best albums. It has about three memorable songs and the others are enjoyable too.

5 out of 5 stars Best in years.......2006-10-20

This album is the best stuff they've put out in years. "Sweet Surrender" is truly on my top-three list of ANY Erasure songs. I can happily listen to it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Listen!.......2006-05-05

For anyone ever interested in Erasure, or for anyone curious, Nightbird is simply the best! Through the years, Erasure has released a dozen or so CDs, some very good, and some pretty bad, but with Nightbird, the duo have redeemed themselves 10-fold! The melodies are fresh, something Erasure has had trouble with in the past. Ther lyrics are real and I defy anyone listening to these songs to not identify with the touching, and often sad feelings sung beautifully by Andy Bell.

You will not go wrong with this wonderful assortment of original songs, but like most CDs of new music, it must be given a chance to 'catch on'. Listen to Nightbird 2 or 3 times, and it will become a part of your listening experience for years to come!

5 out of 5 stars Got me hooked..........2006-04-28

I had never paid much attention to the music of Erasure. Odd, considering that I love Depeche Mode and Erasure derived from Depeche...

I was surfing through Amazon.com a couple of nights ago and this comment I read about Erasure's most recent album caught my eye:
"This album arrived shortly after singer Andy Bell's revelation that he had been living with HIV for more than six years, suffering from debilitating pain." It amazed me, truly. So I decided to listen to it through Napster... and the album was indeed brilliant! I haven't felt the same way about an album since I first discovered Depeche Mode many, many years ago.

It's actually kind of fun on many levels: highly danceable (think early eights new wave dance beats) and with music that makes you feel good about yourself (Latinamerican readers, think Moenia). The lyrics take on such an incredible meaning when you read them knowing what Bell is going through. Such as this one, from the song "Let's Take One More Rocket to the Moon" (one of my favorite tracks):
"A keychain in your pocket just for luck
I hold it in and close my eyes to hide a tear..."

The album is a masterpiece that I know I will be listening to for years to come. I am glad I discovered it... I hope you enjoy it every bit as much as I am.

Erasure with dobro, mandolin, and steel guitar? Believe it. Union Street is the sound of the British synth-pop duo--Andy Bell and Vince Clarke--unplugged. The title comes from the Brooklyn studio in which they re-recorded 11 lesser-known tracks from throughout their career. Ten come from seven albums, while "Tenderest Moments" was a B-side. Designed more for slow dancing than disco dancing, this acoustic set puts the focus on the lyrics and Bell's ardent, yearning voice. Highlights include "Stay With Me," which is graced by a lovely flute solo, and the gospel-tinged "Rock Me Gently," with Jill Walsh providing heavenly counterpoint (both from 1995's Erasure). "Blues Away" (1994's I Say I Say I Say), however, would've worked better without the falsetto, while "How Many Times" (1989's Wild!), ironically, would've worked better in a higher register (Bell is at his best in his natural range). Overall, though, Erasure make this unexpected departure work. If the songs weren't strong enough to begin with, it wouldn't have been worth the effort, but they withstand the changes Bell and Clarke have have put them through quite nicely. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Union Street, Erasure's new acoustic CD was recorded in a small studio in Brooklyn, NY. Andy Bell says that they "show the songs in a different light, and show that they could work on whatever instrument, synthesisers or guitars". "We just felt there were songs on our albums that had been missed as songs," says Vince Clarke.

5 out of 5 stars A different side to Erasure.......2007-06-30

I am a longtime fan of Erasure. I have loved them since the '80s. I finally got around to hearing the group's acoustic album "Union Street". The group gave fans a teaser a couple of years ago as b-sides to one of their singles and I loved what I heard. It was a different side to my favorite pop group. I was so pleased they would try to explore that acoustic sound with a full length album on "Union Street".

Initially I was hoping Andy and Vince would include "Oh L'Amour" and "Always" for "Union Street" but instead the duo wisely chose songs that were less popular (for the masses). After hearing "Union Street" the first time, I was pleased that they chose songs like "Alien" and "Boy" instead of their bigger hits. Hearing these songs with an acoustic makeover is certainly different than what one would expect but I personally loved this different side of Erasure.

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected treasure...........2007-06-18

Like many Erasure fans, I approached 'Union Street' with a sense of uneasiness: 'Acoustic arrangements of b-sides and album tracks'....hmmmm. After buying it and quickly scanning the playlist, I was pleasantly surprised by the choice of tunes that included some of my very favorite Erasure songs. I wondered how Andy and Vince were going to improve on near perfection, but I was missing the point. After the first listen, I realized that song-improvement or enhancement was not the goal of this work. I feel that Erasure were trying to draw out the individual magnificence that resides in each of these lesser known, non-single songs by breathing a totally new kind of life into them. The absolute highlight and greatest pay-off comes with 'Stay With Me'. Already a great song, the acoustic treatment makes this a stunningly beautiful and moving track - I love the percussion and woodwind arrangements that give a certain mystical, eastern flavor to it.

We all know about Andy's remarkably consistent vocal range (for evidence, just listen to how he effortlessly morphs from 'Blues Away' to 'How Many Times?'), but perhaps the biggest surprise is how wonderfully compatible his voice is with very different instruments. That's the joy of this album: its unexpectedly good nature. 'Blues Away' is another highlight track, the falsetto vocal sounds as good as ever, and while the music may not quite create the same heart-wrenching mood as the original, it still has a great deal to offer, giving an almost contemporary feel to this song. 'Home' and 'Love Affair' are also musically creative, showing that many of these songs adapt brilliantly to different approaches.

While 'Union Street' mostly shines, as with any risky undertaking, it does miss the mark here and there. 'Piano Song' really doesn't cut it without the haunting piano melody of the original, and 'Rock Me Gently' just sounds so completely edited and hurried after the marvelously epic nature of the first-time-around release. And here is the paradox with 'Union Street': it helps greatly to be already familiar with these songs in order to truly appreciate the acoustic reworking, but in being familiar with them, it makes you prejudiced as to any attempt to rework them.

More than simply an interesting diversion, 'Union Street' is rewarding and worthy in its own right.

3 out of 5 stars It's Different, Creative, and Pleasurable to Listen to..........2007-05-01

I've been a fan of Erasure since their inception. What I like about this artist is that they're not afraid to experiment ("Erasure") with different sounds and music directions(Unlike Pet Shop Boys who haven't driven off the monotomous music path in their entire career--See my review for "Fundamental"). With "Union Street", the boys have disconnected the synthesizers and drum machines, leaving it just Vince's guitars and Andy's fabulous vocals. While this album is a treat for fans, I hope Erasure doesn't stay at this "acoustic" pit stop too long. Otherwise they may end up like Eurythmics did when they decided to go with a rock sound and destroy both the career of the band and some of the best synth songs ever written (Have u heard the awful rock version of "Sweet Dreams"? Oh Annie, what were you thinking?). But good news...Erasure have a new album coming out in May 2007 which they have plugged the synths and drum machines back in to record a back to their roots so to speak, album. Can't wait!

2 out of 5 stars Great concept, but arrangements are too sparse.......2007-02-13

I am huge Erasure fan, but this was a bit of a disappointment. I have loved Erasure's previous use of acoustic instruments (my favorites are "My Heart . . . So Blue (orchestral)" from the Two-Ring Circus and "Don't Suppose" from the B-side of Chains of Love. Here, however, the arrangements all sound like they need about three more instruments to fill things out. The biggest problem is that there is no percussion to speak of, which makes the songs sound way too mellow and lifeless. A drum kit with some delicate cymbals would have done wonders.

That said, if you are a fan, you will probably find two or three songs that have enough of a new twist here to make this worth picking up. "Stay With Me" is pretty and "Rock Me Gently" works well as a shorter, simpler song.

3 out of 5 stars not so flamboyant .......2007-02-05

Not so gay any more? They are, but I guess the sounds and lyrics try to capture their maturity, finally. Inward sounding, I would say.

My friend hated it. Well, I did not like any song particularly first but Boy is growing finally as my favorite.

Well, if you are familiar with the dread boring Norah Jones, which I find as a pro-depressant, the sinking beat is the real kill, Andy Bell's voice is way better and the acoustic sound is not too bad without much of uplifting tunes or beats.

So, better than mediocre, but, not for the mainstream music buyers, really. But better than Norah Jones, James Taylor, or even Enya.

4 out of 5 stars Good Remix single.......2006-03-03

The Remixes on this CD are great. I really liked the album version and I bought the remix because I was hoping for a faster version. I was not disspointed. All the remixes are great, but the bonus songs are kind of lame.

I think the remixes to "Here I go Impossible Again" are much better. But I was not disspointed with this CD at all. Definetely worth checking out, especially if you dig the song to begin with.

4 out of 5 stars Frankly, I was a bit disappointed.......2005-12-18

I'm still giving this 4 stars for several reasons. First off, I love Erasure, and their concert tour this year was fantastic! Second off, this CD maxi-single as a package was one of the best releases of the year with so many mixes included, a B-side, and a video. You don't see too many CD maxis like these anymore. Absolutely essential for Erasure collectors.

However, I was not blown away by "Breathe" like everyone else seems to be. Yeah it was good, but in my opinion for Erasure I found it to be pretty average, certainly not up to par with some of their older work. The mixes on here are nothing to ride home about. The LMC Extended Club Mix is a rather generic Euro Hi-NRG mix. The "Manhattan Clique" mix is the most straight-ahead house mix of the bunch but its BPM is a bit too slow to mix in with most dance music of 2005. And Pete Heller's Phela Mix is a pretty run of the mill tribal outing - certainly not Pete's most exceptional work.

"Mr. Gribber And His Amazing Cat" is the coolest song title of the year, but then it turns out to be an instrumental track?! What a waste!

I'm not trying to take anything away from Erasure and all their phenomenal work. But I was hoping for a lot more out of this track.

5 out of 5 stars Genial cd maxi.......2005-09-17

5 out of 5 stars Great song.......2005-04-29

In response to John P. Thompson's comment about them not receiving American radio time, I guess it just depends what you listen to. If you listen to BPM on XM radio, this song gets a ton of play time.

It's a great song in the classic Erasure style.

4 out of 5 stars Purely Beyond Erasure.......2005-04-10

It is just so amazing when you look at so many artists that really don't sound great these days, when the image alone is what sells. That remains unfortunate because those songs don't have any feeling. Unlike most manufactured acts, Erasure really became as a surprise to me. Their recent single, Breathe is a unbelieveable surprise. The songs has more meaning than Britney Spears has in love. The song is very upbeat and beautiful, where its video is very sad at times, upon a homeless girl who just tries to stay warm. I really don't think a lot of people actually are going to enjoy this song, but it is just a great change for anybody who is interested for what is hot. Breathe by Erasure is better than hot.

5 out of 5 stars Great sounds from Erasure.......2007-05-18

A must have for Erasure completists. Includes 3 tracks not on the Union St. CD.

4 out of 5 stars good but not amazing.......2006-11-23

Avid fan here (attend tours, have all their albums, DVD's, t-shirts, etc). That said, as the title states, this is good but not great. If you're like me and you need everything the boys have ever done, then get a copy. Otherwise, just buy the Union Street album (which includes "boy").

3 out of 5 stars Erasure "Unplugged?".......2006-05-31

I am gobsmacked!

To say that I'm an Erasure fan is an understatement!

I own everything Vince and Andy have recorded(including this release and the "acoustic" companion album Union Street),and for the life of me can't work out what it's all about.

I know Vince needed time out to have a baby.

Take all the time you need Vince but come back real soon!

This EP will come to be seen as a low point in Erasure's career.

Lacking inspiration and the trademark Erasure sound we are left with a collection of songs stripped back to the bare bones and re-recorded country style.Right down to the twanging guitars.

If I want to listen to country music(which I don't)I'd buy a Keith Urban cd,not Erasure.

Hopefully this phase of Vince and Andy's will run it course real soon and they'll get back to what they do best!

3 Stars is very generous,I just couldn't find it in my heart to give Erasure any less than average.Maybe there will be someone out there who likes the new direction.I for one don't.

Come on Erasure, how about "A Little Respect" for your fans!

Buy with caution!

4 out of 5 stars Acoustic Erasure.......2006-03-23

"Boy" is the lead-off track from the new Erasure acoustic album "Union Street," to be released in April. This EP contains other acoustic tracks not included on the album, and a new ambient synth piece from Vince Clark. "Boy" (not to be confused with the old Book of Love club hit) is reworking of the 1997 original, and seems as if it had been written with this new arrangement in mind. The gentle guitars allow Andy Bell an unobtrusive backing on which to work his vocal magic--the standout track on this EP.

This EP will not be released on CD in the US, only via download, so if you want the physical object, you need to buy this import.

"Cry So Easy" has the original 1985 vocals paired with new instrumentation--this is why it was not included on the album, which includes all new vocals.

"I Bet You're Mad At Me" is taken from a BBC radio session from 2005.

"Jacques Cousteau" is the ambient piece.

All in all, a must have for Erasure fans. Can't wait for the album!

5 out of 5 stars Clarke & Marlow together again?.......2007-04-10

According to Wikipedia: In 1978, Clarke played guitar in an "Ultravox rip-off band", The Plan, with school friend Robert Marlow on vocals and Vince on guitar/keyboards.

3 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe It's Not Yazoo!!.......2001-09-06

"The Peter Pan Effect" is the actual name of the album, with Vince Clarke producing. Robert Marlow is a flash in the pan artist who was lucky enough to hook up with Vince Clarke right around the time of Yazoo. I am still fuzzy as to how much Vince had to do with the sound of the album; "The Peter Pan Effect" was released on Vince's own record label but Vince was prohibited from performing on the album due to him still being under contract with Mute at the time. He did produce it, however, and the arrangements were brought to life by Eric Radcliffe, who was also partially responsible for Yaz's sound. ("Upstairs at ERIC'S" sound familiar to anyone?)
Anyhoo, the single from the album is "The Face of Dorian Gray" which is a cute, perky, bubbly synth-fest. The entire album has the same feel to it, with most of the differences between the songs lying in the alteration of tempo. About half the album is enjoyable and the other half not; some songs are boring and some are even rediculous. A good listen to overall, however, especially if you enjoy the two Yaz albums. The sound on "The Peter Pan Effect" is virtually the same as on Yaz's releases, especially "You And Me Both." With its innovative and captivating (albeit mostly simplistic) synth arrangements, this album is a must-have for any die-hard Vince Clarke fan. It pieces in the part of the puzzle missing between Yaz and Erasure...

This song is very much like Erasure's 80's synth-pop. It remindes me of songs like Only You or Sometimes.
Now for the real jewel here; This single comes with software so you can make your own mix of the song. The choices may not be limitless but you do get a lot of options with over a dozen sounds. You can manipulate each sound on it's own track. I made an AcCappella mix, I made a vocal-beat mix. You can save your versions for listening to later. So when you are tired of the original pop version mix yourself a new variation. I am having a blast!

Being a fan, I have a pre released (Nov. 2004) edition of the single "Breathe" and it is excellent, and very inexpensive for all the remixes you get, from "Pete Heller" and "LMC" a grand total of 9 (that includes the video) You can't go wrong with that maxi ASIN# B00070Q845. This has not been officially released so you boys? you will have to wait a short while, but well worth the wait. Jason Prof DJ
