Editorial Reviews
Product Description
We at 'Collectors' Choice Music' are known (we hope!) for our tasteful reissues of artists both legendary and neglected, but once in a while we like to throw our customers a curveball (or, more appropriately in this instance, a screwball) just for the fun of it. And this one's a whole lot of fun—here is Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams' 1976 album for Atlantic, made when their 'Happy Days' spinoff sitcom 'Laverne and Shirley' was at the top of the Nielsen charts and giving Milwaukee a boost of civic pride it hasn't had since! Here's a few fun facts about this album—though it consists mostly of oldies, Michael McKean a.k.a. Lenny chips in with a song ('Five Years On') and serves as musical coordinator. The band, meanwhile, is incredible, with Hal Blaine on drums, Plas Johnson on tenor sax and Jimmie Haskell (who arranged Elvis) arranging. Melissa Manchester helps out the vocally-challenged duo—and, hey, that's Kenny Loggins on tambourine! You know these sessions! must have been a gas, and the album is, too, so grab your Boo-Boo Kitty, mix up a couple of Pepsi and milk cocktails, and rock to 'Da Doo Ron Ron; Five Years On; Easier Said Than Done; All I Have to Do Is Dream; I Know; Chapel of Love; Sixteen Reasons; Gonna Get Along Without You Now; Graduation Day; More from Our Yearbook; Oh Gee', and 'I'm Walkin''. A 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive, with new notes drawn from an interview with producer Pete Bennett!

5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-02-22

This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty fabulous..........2002-07-23

A nice understated singer who doesn't have to caterwaul or stray outside the boundaries of the tune to be hip. With each disc Ms. Butler gets better and better. In my opinion, she's the best vocalist on MaxJazz -- and really gorgeous a la Horne. I hate to use the overused word, but "cool" suits her.
Good songwriter, too.

5 out of 5 stars Love This Lady.......2001-10-20

i also discovered Ms.Butler while at a listening station at Borders.i listened to A Foolish Thing To Do and was made a believer.her rendition of one of my favorite songs-Dindi-is one of the best EVER!i went out then and got this cd.although not as strong as Foolish, this cd has some great monents, and great musicians.i really enjoy the blues tinged jazz.

3 out of 5 stars Dissenting Opinion.......2000-04-25

I bought this CD after listening to a couple tracks in the music store: I have to say that I am disappointed in the disc as a whole. Although I am a fan of daring singers like Betty Carter and Diane Reeves, they seem to keep their voices more on target than Ms. Butler, who seems to be missing notes as often as she hits them. She can punch a note like nobody's business, but the melody gets lost. Sure it's jazz with a blues vibe, but its hard to take forty minutes of the caterwaul when the voice and the piano are working at cross purposes. The choice of tunes is first rate: "Since I fell for you" and "Willow weep for me" can always be done in a fresh way, but her vocal meanderings make you wish for the occasional phrase just sung straight up.... That said, I appreciate Ms Butler's vocal daring and some of her phrasing, but I prefer the way that other newcomers such as Carla Cook ("It's all about love") can work a song so that you follow where it's going, and you're inspired to stay along for the ride.

4 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2000-04-01

is all I can say about this jazz singer who I discovered recently at the listening station at my local music store. I don't know why Ms. Butler isn't better known; she is truly a talented singer who, in my opinion, beats Diana Krall hands down when it comes to versatility and range. There is some great piano playing on this CD too! If you're looking for something new to add to your jazz collection, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars sexy. soothing........2000-02-17

laverne is a fine discovery for me. her style is subdued yet sexy. she stands out with jazzy tunes and just as good with her bluesy style. this album will make you check the store for her next recording.

Laverne and Shirley thanks for the memories
Reviewer: Mary M McNulty from Canton, MA United States
I watched Laverne and Shirley faithfully. They made me laugh so very hard. The fact that they brought enjoyment to millions of homes is all that needs to be said. Their side kicks Lenny and Squiggy were crazy funny, you had to love them.

Thanks Amazon for having the CD, I had the original album. You smile the whole time you listen to their recordings because of them not their musical ability.

    Thanks again..

    2 out of 5 stars Laverne & Shirley Suck.......2003-11-24

This album was released in 1976 to cash in on the popularity of Laverne & Shirley's TV show. The producers wisely used L.A.'s top session musicians, like Hal Blaine, Plas Johnson and Steve Douglas. So, the music here is expertly played. But there is one unfortunate problem... Laverne & Shirley can't sing! Actually, Cindy Williams isn't too bad of a singer. She sounds like an average person does, but certainly not like a professional. But Penny Marshall is an awful singer, one of the worst I've ever heard. She kind of reminds me of a goose. So the album has those two stikes against it. For the material, the used nine "oldies", two new songs and one lame "comedy" track. "Da Do Ron Ron" sounds the best of the oldies, mainly because the professional background singers, like Melissa Manchester, cover up most of the flaws of the actresses singing. That song probably would have been released as the single, if Shaun Cassidy hadn't had a huge hit with it a few months before. Instead, the semi-novelty "Sixteen Reasons" was released as the single, and stalled at #65 on the charts. The new songs are "Five Years On", which is a decent song that would have fared better with professional singers, and "Oh Gee", which is not a good song. As for the "humor" track, it is called "More From Our Yearbook", and it consists of Laverne & Shirley reading supposedly funny things that their supposed friends supposedly wrote in their yearbook. This CD is for Laverne & Shirley's most devoted fans only.

5 out of 5 stars WE NEED THE DVD!!!!.......2003-11-23

This is great that they have a cd of their songs, but where is the DVD? Laverne and Shirley fans need the release of the Laverne and Shirley DVD and soon! PLEASE!

5 out of 5 stars Laverne and Shirley - Finally on CD !!.......2003-09-19

This CD is quite a fun listen. As a huge fan of their TV show, I bought this on vinyl when it was first released back in late 1976, and absolutely loved it! I found it very entertaining, listenable, and surprisingly charming, especially since I am a fan of this type of music. I was quite taken by their vocals, and the musical arrangements are excellent. I didn't think it would ever be released on CD, though! I only wish they had made more records of this kind.

4 out of 5 stars fine studio "West Side Story".......2006-10-21

If you already own the Broadway cast album or the film soundtrack of WEST SIDE STORY, this album might not seem an essential purchase, because the sheer brilliance and electric energy of the score was captured for the ages on those two aforementioned discs. What you will get on this 1993 studio cast album, though, are two very capable singers, and the musical direction of Barry Wordsworth with the Royal Philharmonic.

Michael Ball and Barbara Bonney play the doomed lovers Tony and Maria. Ball, a musical theatre veteran, easily slips into the material and performs it handsomely. Barbara Bonney, an opera singer best-known for her peerless Mozart soprano roles, seems a little unsteady treading in a different style of music (but the role of Maria is quite suited to an operatic soprano voice). On the whole, Ball and Bonney make quite a team and the recording flatters them both immensely.

LaVerne Williams, mezzo soprano, again displays why it's sometimes very hard for an opera singer to try adapting their voices to another genre of music. The role of Anita is written and best performed by a fiery belter, not the tranquil mezzo that Ms Williams uses on this recording. "America" comes across as a whisper rather than a scream, and "A Boy Like That", grief-stricken Anita's verbal attack on Maria, is not all that it could have been.

This recording features quite a lot of the dance and ballet music, and some snippets of dialogue to indicate the progression of the story. This is arguably Leonard Bernstein's greatest gift to the musical theatre, filled with haunting and sweeping melodies, coupled with Stephen Sondheim's earliest of lyrics.

Although it's not the best recording of the score, you could do a lot worse than this WEST SIDE STORY.

The jazz world can only hope that as the highly elusive wider audience shops for the latest Diana Krall album, they also discover other young jazz vocalists. Laverne Butler is more than a worthy suggestion. Her second album is a dandy that seems to be presented in two distinct parts. The first five selections showcase that dichotomy of the rough, lonely, blues life being confessed through song by a tender female possessed of an incredibly pretty, clear voice, i.e. Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. Whether or not she's crossing the country for love, as suggested in the clever lyric to Wes Montgomery's classic "West Coast Blues," or smoking and drinking too much, as in the standard "The End of a Love Affair," or even if she's actually killed her man and done time, as Butler convincingly conveys in her original tile track, she's believable in the roles. If the latter portion of the 12-song disc isn't a tribute to one of Butler's obvious influence, Nancy Wilson, it certainly sounds like it. Throughout the album, Bruce Barth, the pianist, arranger and MVP here, bathes Butler in lush string settings and sparse, inventive, contemporary arrangements throughout this winner. --Mark Ruffin

Imagine an oceanside bar with the sound of glasses and murmur in the background. A piano under a solitary blue spotlight and an old RCA ribbon microphone in front of a classy-looking femme fatale. Get the picture? Well, this is what comes to mind when you listen to Butler's new CD. Not as pristine as Diane Krall but as bluesy as Billie H. Three cuts have string accompaniment which turns out to be a BIG plus! Thumbs up to producer Bruce Barth! MaxJazz has a way to release excellent CD's one after the other! This CD, Butler's second for MaxJazz, should receive some nominations in next year's awards! Highly recommended!

          5 out of 5 stars perfect........2004-07-01

if you're into Orff style things, this one is the culmination.
          enjoy. I certainly did.

          5 out of 5 stars Perfect........2004-07-01

If you've enjoyed Carl Orff, this is his legitimate successor.
Nicholas Lens is perfectionism not over but cross professionalism.
This is one of the few CDs these days that you ought to pay
money for. It is really worth every cent.

          4 out of 5 stars Expensive!.......2003-11-12

I believe this recording is very good. Still $999.99 for a used copy seems quite expensive. Or $1,002.48 with shipping - as I just found out. Don't you think?

          5 out of 5 stars exciting.......2003-03-04

This is very compelling, dynamic music, & so idiosyncratic. Definitely unique, & moves in a very modern & brilliant way, especially with the interesting ways it makes use of different vocal lines...

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Merger of Rock & Opera.......2002-04-16

When I first heard this piece, it reminded me of the soprano solo from "The Fifth Element." This CD spans quite a range of music, from beautiful laments for lost loved ones to almost annoying choruses harping about the darker side of death. Unlike most requiems, which are straight laments, this one is more of a commentary on death. This one gets better with each listen. I particularly recommend the second-to-last track, Agnus Purus -- what an incredible choral movement and key change at the end. I could easily see this as the foundation for a movie soundtrack, or a new TV drama.
