      5 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Good Effort.......2003-06-21

I bought this to support the anti-landmine cause and was pleasantly surprised. Heather writes in-your-face lyrics (spoken-not sung) and Paul does great work with backing vocals, guitar and arrangements. If this had gotten more publicity I think it would have done quite well. Excellent job for a great cause.

Well, you've got to give Paul McCartney credit for having the courage of his convictions--and the heroism to occasionally fall spectacularly flat on his face pursuing them. The parallel here is Magical Mystery Tour, the half-baked 1967 Beatles TV film that was largely McCartney's conceit. Seventeen years later McCartney figured his solo star power could carry a film vehicle, and so concocted this odd caper tale about the race to find the stolen master tapes to Mac's latest solo album; suffice it to say few critics were assigned to the case. If faint praise is in order, the album is a less painful experience than the film. Still, one has to wonder what drove Mac to re-record a slate of his best Beatles tunes--along with some of his most tepid solo songs--for this misbegotten star turn. Still, ill conceived though they may be, the performances are stellar throughout, featuring an all-star band that includes old mate Ringo and turns by guitarists Dave Edmunds, Dave Gilmour, and Chris Spedding, as well as contributions by George Martin, Steve Lukather, Jeff Porcaro, Eric Stewart, and John Paul Jones. Arguably McCartney's greatest "What was he thinking?!" project. -Jerry McCulley

          Album Description

Reissue of the 1984 album. This album relies on older McCartney material from Revolver to Tug of War, with one significant touch, everything has been re-recorded. And that doesn't just mean that 'Yesterday' has a new solo McCartney version, it means that he's recut songs as recent as 'Ballroom Dancing' and Pipes of Peace's 'So Bad' and replicates the original recordings, down to the same solos. Also featured is 'No More Lonely Nights', an absolutely lovely mid-tempo tune graced by a terrific David Gilmour guitar solo. Packaged in a paper sleeve. 2005.

3 out of 5 stars Give My Regards to Japan.......2005-01-07

Now if you ask me, and certain folk interested in movie soundtracks do now and again, this here album is an interesting attempt at providing music for a movie. Albeit not very memorable in itself, McCartney music is memorable even when it ain't his best. In fact, the worst McCartney tune is often better than the vast majority of tunes on the market at any given time. He is, after all, one of the masters.

This here album made it up to the #21 spot and lasted there for only a week... yet another weak showing for the mid 80s. Again, as I have stated previously, this ain't necessarily a reflection of bad product as much as it is a reflection of the changing times, an aging fan base, and the evil machinations of programmers at MTV.

The one and only single from this album was "No More Lonely Nights" which has what I consider to be the most interesting base intro of any McCartney tune ever composed. You take a listen to that base line and you will hear Paul do what he should have been doing all along - improvising. This here album is chock full 'o previously released tunes done up again in new fashion, and the ones they include (the reruns that is) are all nice. I like this here album even though it didn't do a while lot in the way of sales figures.

This one bothers Junior because he is familiar with the expression "give my regards to Broadway" and the name of this album is slightly different and causes him consternation. I don't believe it will cause you no consternation unless you are looking for a string of hits... and if you are, you are better off getting a greatest hits album and being done with it.

4 out of 5 stars Return to pop roots and strong songwriting for McCartney.......2001-12-28

Although John Lennon's death may have had an impact on Tug of War's themes, there's little doubt that McCartney was on an upward swing. His first album recorded with George Martin since the demise of the Beatles, Tug of War is filled to the brim with strong well thought out melodies and a set of strong lyrics for most of the songs.

Surprisingly, the production is considerably slicker than the McCartney-Lynne collaboration Flaming Pie. The production touches and use of orchestration are imaginative and always tasteful. If anything Tug of War is reminiscent of Abbey Road in terms of its "sound". The title track, Take it Away, Somebody Who Cares, Here Today, Ballroom Dancing, The Pound is Sinking and Wanderlust are the strongest songs on the album. What's That You're Doing is a pretty good funk jam written and performed with Stevie Wonder and is far superior to the McCartney penned Ebony & Ivory.

The album does have its weak spots--Get It (recorded with the late Carl Perkins) is fun but fairly insubstanial. Dress Me Up As A Robber, despite an intricate and interesting melody, is a bit over the top. Be What You See is little more than a song fragment simliar to Ram On from the album Ram. Overall, though, the songwriting is outstanding and, if the album fails to rock, it does manage to capture your interest with the imaginative melodies and well thought out lyrics.

Tug of War doesn't suffer from the mawkish lyrics found on Pipes of Peace the immediate follow up. McCartney focuses on songcraft and was in the process of trying to restore his long bashed critical reputation with this fine album. Although not as interesting as Flowers in the Dirt (or Flaming Pie), Tug of War is a bit more consistent than other McCartney albums from the same time frame. Wanderlust and The Pound is Sinking (along with the title track) prove that McCartney's abilities as a songwriter hadn't left him; his lyrical and musical muse was just on vacation while he tried to rack up sales with Wings. Tug of War is a stronger album than Band on the Run but, again, lacks the rock 'n' roll moments that highlight that album.

This Japanese edition is only different from the import copy only in its packaging; it's an exact duplicate of the original album package from 1982 but includes a lyric sheet in both Japanese and English. The sound quality is same as the import copy. It's warmer and has better detail than the domestic version. There aren't any bonus tracks nor are there any extras beyond the lyric sheet. I would have expected this reissue to use the K2 system (20bit or 24 bit mastering)and to have the album remastered again. Such isn't the case. Unless you want to pay extra for the collectible packaging, I'd suggest picking up the superior sounding import from Europe. It's about $10.00 less and sounds just as good.

          5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2000-06-14

Tug of War is Paul McCartney's best album of the 1980's. This is an essential album for every Beatle fan and McCartney fan. This album offers the timeless treasure "Here Today," the song Paul wrote about John Lennon after his death. Tug of War also includes the famous duet with Stevie Wonder, "Ebony and Ivory."

Released in late 1983, Pipes of Peace peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard album charts, thereby becoming the first Paul McCartney LP to run out of gas before reaching the U.S. top 10. Which is not to say that it deserved better--despite the well-meaning title track and the duet with Michael Jackson on "Say Say Say," Pipes of Peace marked a definite artistic low for Sir Paul. Coming on the heels of 1982's effervescent Tug of War, Pipes of Peace sounded surprisingly sleepy and uninspired, and the few half-decent songs ("Keep Under Cover," the unfortunately titled "So Bad") didn't stand a chance against the album's bland, state-of-the-'80s production values. "Say Say Say," a big improvement over "The Girl Is Mine," Macca and Michael's previous collaboration, easily outclasses the album's other tracks. Happily, you can also find it on All the Best, where it gets the company it deserves. --Dan Epstein

5 out of 5 stars Japanese version is even better.......2005-01-11

Now if you ask me, and folks interested in nadir and zenith often do, this here album was not Paul McCartney's zenith... but it twern't his nadir neither. This one is kind of middling with a few frilly bits and some interesting musicianship, but nothing that stands out as significant in a very significant catalogue. I guess that might could be why it managed, back in 1983, to get up to the #15 spot and stay there only for a week before slipping down and vanishing in to relative obscurity. This, as they say, was not one of his finer moments in musical history.

Despite this rather negative commencement to my review, he did manage to see three singles lifted off the album, "Say Say Say" and "Pipes of Peace" are memorable, but "So Bad" is kind of forgettable. The mid 80s were not bad for Paul, but they were not as thrilling as the mid to late 70s when he could do no wrong. Plus that, his fan base was getting older and the young folk who were plunking down pocket change for albums in the local record shops were starting to find interest elsewhere and Paul wasn't the ant's pants as far as they were concerned. It was, after all, the era when Michael Jackson was eclipsing everyone in Popdom and Paul McCartney (along with everyone else) was left in the wake.

Me and Mama care for this album like we care for all his mid 80s albums... it feels like a red headed stepchild in the family. You are obligated to care for them, but you don't take to them like your own. They come to the table to eat with you, but you always look at them and see them buck teeth and freckles and tussle of red hair and know that it ain't from your loins even though it might have taken your name. That's kind of how we feel about this here album. Junior, however, loves it because he likes to learn about Indians and Cowboys and Old West stuff and he associates Pipes of Peace with peace pipes... which he counts among the Indian lore of Hollywood Westerns.

This one is for the collectors and die hard fans. If you ain't in either of them groups, then I suggest you start your purchasing elsewhere... maybe with one of his compilation albums or with one that remained up in the charts for a longer period. That's my two cents worth... and with the weakening of the US dollar, two cents ain't worth nearly what it was worth back in 1983 when this thing came out.

5 out of 5 stars Great Peace of Recording!!!.......2001-05-08

One of my Favorite Paul MCcartney albums...especially THROUGH OUR LOVE which you can listen too over and over again. Even though the album didn't get much attention for the ordinary person, the music and melodies is truly worth the price to a truly Paul MCcartney and Beatles fan.

5 out of 5 stars worthy of keeping.........2001-02-17

It's so rare CD!! Especially "The Man" is performed by Paul & Michael Jackson, which is in so dynamic rhythm that would make you energetic! Paul McCartney shows his various color in this album, also Ringo appears in this. Furthermore, there's included some rare pictures of them in that period, which will guide you to the "Those Were The Days"..
