Don't be fooled!.......2006-12-04
I doubted for a whole year whether to buy or not this "All The Hits"
double CD because I already owned other Jan & Dean CD's rating their
"The Original" one with 5 stars. My doubts were confirmed after listening
to this package. Most of the "original" versions are not the real
originals because they are different from the ones we used to listen to
on singles, EP's or LP's or on other CD compilations. Don't buy this:
besides not being original, on CD 1 there's a lot of talking nonsense
displayed on tracks 26 till 45 and on CD 2 some songs I was looking
for are not original. This "costful" CD is a true rip-off!
From Surf City to Drag City.......2005-09-13
Great to have all that music on the2 discs. Lots of great memories.
'63-'65 music needed them as much as it did the Beach Boys.......2002-12-10
With these guys, there's always the inevitable comparison with the Beach Boys. Jan and Dean used three singers from the Matadors, and also Sloan and Barri (the writing/production team of "Eve of Destruction", "Secret Agent Man" and numerous other grade "A" hits) as backup singers. Dean's falsetto had a bit of grit to it, and Jan's voice perfectly complemented it; so they made up for a lack of harmonic smoothness with more timbre in their sonic palette, and thus filled the sonic space just as fully as did their more subtle sonic/surf 'twins'.
Jan & Dean often had more energy and heat in their music than did their fellow stable-mates - J&D were the true-to-life wild (and funny) men of surf music. The Beach Boys were definitely the kings of cool - their vocals had that distinctive way of blending and soaring - but Jan & Dean's would soar and also wail!
I remember in '63 when Beach Boys' "Surfin' USA" came out, it was a great song (and the first I personally had heard from them), and a new kind of thing to hit the airwaves (other surf songs had been instrumentals). But when Jan & Dean's "Surf City" rollicked into the charts a few weeks later (hitting #1), it became my favorite song for the entire year. Some of J&D's follow-ups also jumped right at me and knocked me upside the head, especially "Drag City", "Dead Man's Curve", "The New Girl in School", and the theme from the [T.A.M. I. Show]: "Here They Come (From All Over the World)". "Ride the Wild Surf" wasn't bad, either.
And their lyrics on "Honolulu Lulu", though intended to be funny in a sort tongue-in-cheek manner, are nevertheless gorgeously written, and sensitive to the sounds of fun and teenage/twenty-something love, after all! In general they are stellar lyricists, who really understand and revel in the ability to turn a good phrase. Let's not forget "The Little Old Lady . . .", "Anaheim, Azuza and Cucamunga . . ." and "Popsicle". It's a bit of a trick to poke fun at something and 'make happy' at the same time - but these guys didn't have a mean bone in their bodies.
My favorite Beach Boys songs were usually the ones where they got really slow and/or kind of mellow: "Surfer Girl", "Don't Worry, Baby", "Caroline No", and what I consider to be one of the greatest songs I have ever heard, the album cut "Warmth of the Sun". I always have felt that when the BB's started to rock, that Jan and Dean often beat them by an easy margin, once again because of the energy/grit factor. Practically every thing the Beach Boys have ever recorded is more than just pleasant; but J&D's best songs often went further further, hitting me in the gut, and [via their lyrics] conking me on the head.
This isn't to say that the Beach Boys weren't geniuses at creating harmony and tasteful, telling dramatic miniatures - they are and were astoundingly good: witness the gorgeous song cycle of their 'Pet Sounds' album. And, of course, there's that founding fountainhead of psychedelia, an epic in miniature, "Good Vibrations".
Jan & Dean more or less flopped when they tried for a brief time to go down the new road taken by the Beach Boys - into the realm of teen angst and introspection. I don't think the guys did that well when they had to reign it [the energy] in, so to speak. The gears just weren't there for them to shift into and drive/surf into this very different realm.
To his credit, Dean was totally against the idea, and even refused to sing on "You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy" [I believe Brian Wilson was brought in to take his place.] That day Dean walked down the hall and sang the falsetto part for the Beach's Boys' "Barbara Ann" instead, and it went to #1. [Later, when D put together the 'Anthology' album he left all such cuts out of the mix (at the time, Jan was busy trying to recover his neurological faculties, many years after his near-fatal car crash)].
This previously most complete collection of their hits was missing " . . . Hurt a Guy", as well as the P. F. Sloan song "I Found a Girl" and the excellent and moving "Beginning From an End" (another car accident song: in this one, Mommy dies), both from the 'Folk 'n Roll' album. But every single one of Jan & Dean's major hits are here - all of their other greatest hit compilations and anthologies fell 3 or 4 songs short, one way or the other.
Mixed Feelings.......1999-07-21
This is NOT an album for Jan & Dean purists who want to hear them the way they sounded on the original Liberty albums. A lot of room on this CD is taken up by nonsense. This includes studio chatter, alternate takes, radio spots, non vocal versions, etc. This type of re-issue should be considered more of an addition to an already existing collection of Jan & Dean.
Some will remember the phrase "Visual Sound Stereo" on the cover of the original Jan & Dean albums issued on the Liberty label. That term was not exactly a technical term but referred to how the stereo was mixed. It usually meant the main vocal came out of one channel and most of the instruments come out of the other channel, with very little coming out of the middle. That type of stereo mixing never caught on. None the less, that's how the original Jan & Dean songs were recorded and it gives the original Liberty albums a unique listening flavor.
Unfortunately, the producers of this CD decided to re-mix the stereo so that the main vocal came out of the middle channel. If you don't care about how the stereo is mixed, this is not an issue, but if you want to hear Jan & Dean in the original stereo, you are better off buying one of the Australian imports currently available on the Raven label.
A great collection of the original Jan and Dean hits!.......1998-10-07
If woodies, long boards, 57 Chevys and garage music mean nothing to you, skip this CD. If you're like me, though, and the layered vocal harmonies of 1960's surf music hits you where it counts, this is the real thing.
Jan and Dean will probably always be remembered as Beach Boy knock offs, but this disk shows how much more there was to the duo. Jan and Dean were surely the Laurel and Hardys of rock and roll. Their sense of humor shines on these recordings.
Although lacking a few "essentials" (where are the live recordings and songs from "Pop Symphony"?), all the hits are here along with many great album tracks. The sound is superb and many of the songs are presented in extended versions.
This is not the perfect Jan and Dean collection, but it's as good as we are probably ever going to see.

FUN IN THE SUN FOR SURF MUSIC ENTHUSIASTS.......2003-03-08
Possessing excellent sound quality, "As Easy As 123 (Popsicle/The Little Old Lady From Pasedena/Drag City)
by Jan & Dean" creates little doubt that the famous duo had a major influence on surf music. For those of us who lived through the sixties, Jan&Dean were second only to The Beach Boys in surf popularity. The songs on this CD demonstrate that J&D had some very fine musicians playing behind them. The music really does come alive here. Very exciting stuff!! However, be prepared to hear Jan and Dean's vocals sound somewhat out of key. The excellent stereo sound does exploit the fact that their harmonies (even with Brian Wilson's occasional help) never seem completely true. About the only positive thing that can be said about their original Mono records is that many of the vocal issues were hidden. But cheer on surf dudes, this CD also captures the fun that J&D had in creating their songs. FUN,FUN, FUN ALL WAY!!
Re-issue Of Three Original Jan & Dean LP's.......1999-07-21
This is an Australian import re-issue of three Jan & Dean LP's from the sixties; (1) Popsicle, (2) Little Old Lady From Pasadena, (3) Drag City. The title of this CD is "Jan & Dean, Easy As 1, 2, 3". The Australian label is "Raven", I've never heard of em. It is rather rare to see the original Popsicle and Drag City LP's re-issued on anything (LP or CD). All songs are in true stereo and sound good enough to have come from the master tapes although there is no mention of this on the CD. Only the bonus coke jingle is in mono. In addition, the so called "Visual Sound Stereo" mixing is left the same as it was on the original LP's. "Visual Sound Stereo" was a term that referred to the somewhat unusual stereo mixing where the main vocals came out of one channel, and the instruments came out of the other channel. This never caught on, but that's how the originals LP's were issued. Unfortunately, many Jan & Dean re-issues have re-mixed the stereo in an unfortunate attempt to improve upon this. Thanks Raven for not changing this and leaving the stereo exactly as it was originally issued. To change it is like colorizing a black and white movie.
At first I was skeptical that three LP's (33 tracks) could fit on one CD. Upon comparing the songs with the original vinyl albums, I discovered that four songs were duplicated between the three original LP's. Since these did not have to be duplicated on the CD, this allowed all songs from three LP's to fit with no omissions. As the back of the CD states: "Over 75 Minutes Of Music". Looks like they used the entire CD.
Note: There is an interesting typo on the track listing on the back. There is no track 31. It skips from 30 to 32. Thus, the last couple of track numbers do not match what's actually on the CD. The proof reader was on vacation?

Generous compilation of '60s car tunes.......2005-09-28
This generous collection pull together over two dozen car-themed tunes from the 1960s, led by several of the Beach Boys' and Jan & Dean's classics. More interesting are the less famous sides, including a garage rockin' take of "Road Runner" by The Gants, the Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" styled "Stick Shift" by The Duals, and the Super Stocks ode to big tires "Wide Track." There are instrumentals to burn here, including a pair of sax-fueled tunes from The Super Stocks, the guitar-and-organ tunes from Jerry Cole & His Spacemen, and the sax-guitar-and-drums Bo Diddley beat "Brontosaurus Stomp" by The Piltdown Men.
There are also a number of novelty pop orchestral and chorus tunes, including Bert Convoy & The Cheer's "Chicken," The Cheer's classic "Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots," and The Eligibles "Car Trouble." Mr. Gasser & The Weirdos' "Mr. Gasser" may not be a great rock tune (or a rock tune at all, really), but it sure brings back memories of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's drawings, model kits and the trio of Capitol albums based on his characters. The 6-panel insert contains a larger rendition of the color cover, a song list and CD production credits, but no liner notes, discographical or chart information. 3-3/4 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. just missing one song.......2004-08-08
There's some filler on here, but for the most part it's a good compilation. The only thing it's missing is Hot Rod Lincoln, by Commander Cody. Of course, there's no Beach Boys or Jan & Dean, but you can get their discs easily enough.
A TRUE TRIP TO DRAG CITY!!!.......1999-07-09
THIS IS ONE GREAT CD THAT HAS ALL THE BEST CRUISIN SONGS ON IT, EXCEPT FOR "HEY LITTLE COBRA" BY THE RIP CHORDS. THEY INCLUDE PART ONE AND PART TWO OF THE BEACH BOYS' "SHUT DOWN", AND THEY INCLUDE REALLY CLASSIC SONGS BY THE CHEERS, MR. GASSER AND THE WEIRDOS,THE SPACEMEN, AND LOTS MORE!! A REALLY GREAT SUMMERTIME CD.--PETER A.

Nice Album Featuring Best Of Jan And Dean!.......2002-07-18
Life and fame were very good to Jan and Dean, at least for a while, when they started out as a Garage Duo making the tours of local recording studios. They quickly took advantage of the happenstance of the rise of southern California surfer music to catch a wave to the top with an early hit, "Linda". Later came "Surf City", and a raft of together, such as "Honolulu Lulu", "The New Girl In School', and "Sidewalk Surfing" (which robbed the melody and chord progressions from Beach Boy pal Brian Wilson's "Catch A Wave). Later came such popular numbers as "Ride The Wild Surf", "You really Know How to Hurt A Guy", and of course, "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena".
In what is one of the most ironic twists involving their career, one of their biggest hits was with a song called "Dead Man's Curve", which chronicled a fateful race between a Jaguar XKE and a Corvette Sting Ray, which ends with the protagonist badly mangled in the crash. Just a year later Jan was himself badly injured in such a crash in his own Corvette, and suffered a number of permanent disabilities from it. Still, Jan and Dean performed for years later with rock and roll revival tours, and Jan still records, although in a very limited sense. This was wonderful music, and it still plays well. I listen to them often, and I'm sure you will too once you listen to this album of their collected hits. Enjoy

Customer Reviews:
Look at me, I'm hep!.......2006-03-29
This CD combines two albums from the 1960s.
Drag City is arguably Jan & Dean's best album. Unlike the typical albums of the era, which used to feature one or two hits plus covers of other performer's hits, this album features almost all original tunes (other than a cover of "Little Deuce Coupe"). The songs are all about cars and they are all good. "Drag City" was the hit single, but "Popsicle Truck" also became a hit later, as did "Dead Man's Curve" (but this isn't the version of "Dead Man's Curve" that was later released as a single). The other songs are all good, too, but my favorite is "Schlock Rod(Parts 1 & 2)", which is a hilarious parody of songs where a guy brags about his car.
Jan & Dean's Pop Symphony No. 1 isn't actually a Jan & Dean album. It's an album by "The Bel-Aire Pops Orchestra" (which sounds like a made up name for a non-existant orchestra). It features orchestral versions of Jan & Dean hits (plus the obscure b-side "It's a Shame to Say Goodbye", for some reason). It's not a very good album, I'm sad to say. A few of the tracks are "interesting", but that's not the same as being good. Pop music and classical music are very different things, and they don't mix well together in this case.
The CD adds two bonus tracks. "Frosty the Snowman" was their Christmas single for 1962. "She's Still Talking Baby Talk" was the b-side of that single, as well as being a sequel to their first hit "Baby Talk". Unfortunately, "She's Still Talking Baby Talk" is not actually on this CD. They accidently put Jan & Dean's remake of "Baby Talk" from the album Jan & Dean's Golden Hits on the CD instead.
THIS DISC IS A REAL TREAT .!!!TWO CLASSIC ALBUMS ON ONE DISC. .........2005-11-11
THIS ALBUM IS A MUST FOR SURF MUSIC FANS,AND JAN AND DEAN.THE MUSIC IS!! AAA+!! FROM DRAG CITY,TO POP SYMPHONY NO 1 .WAIT TILL YOU HEAR THIS MUSIC!!.YOU WONT BE SORRY.!! A GOOD BET TO BUY.5 STAR RATED.
Jan and Dean meet Ivor Stravinsky at the drag strip.......1998-10-12
Of all the One Way Records Jan and Dean 2-for-1 reissues, this one is arguably the best. "Drag City" signaled a change for the boys. Up till then, Jan and Dean records were composed primarily of cover songs. Although "Surf City" introduced the concept of self-penned material, it was "Drag City" where it really came together. Working with a close knit group of Los Angeles songwriters (including none other that Beach Boy Brian Wilson), Jan brought together a collection of mostly original songs. Standouts include "Drag City," "Hot Stocker," the hilarious "Schlock Rod (Parts 1 and 2)" and my favorite, "Surf Route 101." This is also the album that introduced the classic "Dead Man's Curve."
"Pop Symphony No. 1" is a very special treat. Recorded in 1965, "Pop Symphony" was Jan's attempt to create orchestral versions of Jan and Dean's greatest hits. Working with the Bel-Aire Pops Orchestra and some of Los Angeles' finest studio musicians, Jan presents mini symphonies of Jan and Dean favorites such as "The New Girl in School" and "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena." Especially well done are "You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy" and that old chestnut "Heart and Soul." Although purists may discount this album due to the lack of any apparent involvement from Dean, it is a true milestone in the history of surf music.
This CD comes with the original LP artwork, but little else. It would have been nice to see the song writing credits and additional session information. Also, the CD mistakenly labels the song "Baby Talk" as "She's Still Talking Baby Talk." However, the A-side of "She's Still Talking Baby Talk," "Frosty the Snowman," is included for Jan and Dean fanatics.

Just good ol Hot Rod music!!!.......2005-02-25
Hot Rod music is an extension of surf music...no waves, just high revs instead. This is a solid collection of the sound and a good place to get a feel for the early to mid 60's Hot Rod beat.
