5 out of 5 stars To borrow a friend's comment, "he is the second coming!".......2003-01-09

Okay, so maybe he's not anywhere near the second coming, but he sure is amazing. I didn't get into Duncan Sheik until long after the "barely breathing" years, so backtracking through his music since "Phantom Moon" has been a real pleasure. "Humming", I must say, is my favorite. He conveys the emotions that he feels in the moment in the songs. This is its major plus as well as its one drawback. He displays his almost distaste for fame and the burdens and pleasures that come from it in "nothing special." However, the incredible songwriting that is characteristic of Sheik is almost lacking in the lyric's simplicity. This is also evident in "that says it all" in which he goes on to praise all the great "mr. jagger"s and "mr. hendrix"s that came before him, and in "bite your tounge", a seemingly bitter song about...well...life in general. Now you're all wondering why I gave this album 5 stars. In all of his glory, Sheik comes back from the songs I've just talked about with songs like "rubbed out", "alibi", and "house full of riches." These all show the kind of emotion that I have come to expect from Sheik. The integration of strings into his music has been wonderfully orchestrated to acheive a sound unlike any other. To finish the album off, he includes a song that ranks among the best songs of all time in my book (it's a different book okay?!). "Nichiren" along with the bonus track "foreshadowing" make me want to tear up! The tragedy of "nichiren" is almost unbelievable to think that he put that much feeling into musical form. He swoops in from the dark "nichiren" with the more hopeful "foreshadowing". Even though most people don't really stop to listen to the bonus track, I think it's necessary to the completion of the album. If you haven't listened to it...DO IT!! Anyway, I am a huge fan so of course this is biased. But that doesn't mean that this isn't an excellent album. I highly recommend it to fans of "Phantom Moon", however, fans only of the first album or "Daylight" may find it a bit too gloomy for their taste. I hope y'all enjoy it now!

If you've listened to the first album, and loved it, you'll probably be disappointed by this one.. It's good, it's Duncan Sheik, but it just doesn't have the same power and emotion.. If you don't have either, I highly recommend the first cd..

DUNCAN SHEIK HUMMING IS THE BEST POP/ROCK/ALTERNATIVE CD OUT THERE, ALL TRACKS ARE GREAT AND IS 10 TIMES BETTER THAN THE FIRST ALBUM.
