About the Artist
Robert Calvert was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and died on the 14 August 1988. Domiciled in London's bohemian Ladbroke Grove/Portobello Road area, Calvert became acquainted with Hawkwind, one of the area's atypical "underground" attractions.

His poetry readings became part of the group's act during the early 70s and in 1972 he joined the line-up as an official member. Calvert wrote, and originally sang, "Silver Machine", their UK Top 3 hit, although by that point his vocal had been overdubbed. He left Hawkwind the following year but three of the group - Dave Brock (guitar), Lemmy (bass) and Simon King (drums) - joined ex-Pink Fairies Twink (drums) and Paul Rudolph (guitar) on

Captain Lockheed And The Starfighters, his highly praised solo debut. His second album 'Lucky Leif And The Longships', which featured science-fiction writer Michael Moorcock, was produced by Brian Eno, but it proved less popular than its predecessor.

"Test Tube Conceived" was originally issued in 1986 and watermarked with Calvert's inimitable style and interest boarding obsession with science fiction/fact.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the pop pinnacle of Bob Calvert's aspirations.......2003-11-20

You may have found your way here thru liking Hwakwind albums.
You may have concluded that everything that Dave Brock did was rubbish but everything that Calvert was involved in was intriguing
You may have started off with Captain Lockheed and Lucky Lief and quite liked the experience.
Hype is something quite different. It was released with a book of the story of Tom Mahler and was probably modelled on the furore following Lennon's assasination.
It is a collection of pop songs that are maddeningly catchy and you will find yourself humming them for months afterwards.

I understand that the track listing is rather more extensive that this listing would suggest.

The highlights has to be Greenfly.

You will be lucky to find a more articulate rock performer.

If Bob had struck it lucky he would have been more popular than Bowie.

5 out of 5 stars Simply great...you will be pleasantly surprised!.......2001-04-14

This is by far Robert Calvert's best album, in terms of songs and production. Don't expect anything like Hawkwind's "Sonic Attack" though; "Hype" is rooted firmly on terra firma. Calvert's lyrics, dealing with more Earthly topics than Hawkwind, are so witty and well composed they make me sad that Calvert is dead. The songs stick to traditional rock arrangements, omitting any long Hawkwind-esque instrumental passages. You WILL get at least a few of the songs stuck in your head after only one listening. Of particular note is "The Greenfly and the Rose," which has to be Calvert's lyrical masterpiece. The lyrics, a simple but beautiful statement about life, combine with Calvert's vulnerable vocal tones into a song which nearly made me cry the first time I heard it. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this album.
