Customer Reviews:
One of my all time favorite albums!.......2006-08-24
If you've got a great sense of humor and love all genres of music, you will really enjoy the brilliance of Klaus Nomi.
Klaus Nomi.......2006-06-29
The one comment up there says Klaus was a happy fellow, he was not, nearing that last few years of his life he felt lonely, he was looking for a boyfriend. He thought no one would love him, and he died of AIDS. This man will return, someday when the world is ready for him, then the world will really see Klaus Nomi, the man from outter space!
A good introduction to Klaus Nomi.......2005-03-25
Klaus Nomi was a rare and special being. He made the world a little less drab.
This CD is a strange and happy mix of songs from all sides of Nomi. This is important in understanding Nomi - a strange and happy artist. Nomi was equally comfortable in many styles and equally proficient at all of them. He was at home in pop, opera, and new wave.
He shows off his classical side in a Saint-Saens aria, Der Nussbaum, and the Cold Song, among others. He surprises with a
cover of 'Can't Help Falling in Love' that wisely resisted the temptation to go soprano.
Any collection of Nomi is incomplete without the 'Nomi Song,' 'Total Eclipse,' and 'After the Fall,' and these are here, along with the Rush-Limbaugh-Favorite 'You Don't Own Me.'
This does not have any of the 'hard-to-find' tracks, but it's an excellent introduction to Klaus Nomi.
Incidental note - liner notes are in french.
Hopefully, with the movie out, people will begin to look at Nomi again, and we may even see a revival of interest in his music.
It may be cliche, but it's true: Nomi was an artist who lived before his time.
Masterpiece of operatic rock and synth-pop.......2004-12-19
This compilation contains tracks from all Nomi's solo albums plus a stunning live version of the magnificent Samson And Delilah Aria, composed by Saint Saens. The material is an interesting blend of catchy synth-pop, like Just One Look and Falling In Love Again (sung partly in German) and serious choral pieces like From Beyond. Rubberband Lazer, an addictive pop song with weird country infusions and effusive synth textures, and the theatrical Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead with its singalong chorus are amazing tracks.
Nomi's most famous tracks like Cold Song, an impressive operatic number and Total Eclipse, a magical marriage of rock and classical from the first album, still sound awesome. My only complaint is that I think the studio version of Samson And Delilah ought also to have been included. Klaus Nomi was part of the late 70s/early 80s synth explosion, but his operatic angle was unique. His music remains highly original and inspiring. The Essential Klaus Nomi is definitely the best album to investigate this obscure genius.

Customer Reviews:
Probably the best of his collection.......2003-10-23
Now, I have listened to all of his three single albums,
and I think that this one, alias "The simple man" is the
best of these three.. Much has been said about Klaus Nomi, his life and career, so I won`t go into biographical info here.
Instead, I would more like to comment each of the songs on this cd individually:
1. "From beyond"
The album opens with this curious "song", wich is not a song in
itself, but merely a synthesized and mixed sound effect similar to this we can hear in "Nomi chant" from his first album. We can hear Nomi "howl" somewhere faraway in the background. He is accompained by the sound of wind and wolves. A ruther scary and
emotional effect-remix, to be heard with lights off in an abandoned cabin deep in the woods.. Rating: 2,5.
2. "After the fall"
Arghhhh, Nomi rocks!Again! Written by Kristian Hoffman, author of the "Total Elipse", this song has a nice tune when he sings "After the fall..etc" using his falsetto, but giving the fact that it`s too long (4`42), and too repetitive with not a very good end,
it deserves a lower rating.. Rating: 4,0.
3. "Just one look"
Oh, Beatles? Anyway, a pretty nice and romantic song, but ruther average, in my opinion. Nomi sings it totally in falsetto. The most funny thing is when he "splits" in the middle of the song and talks to himself, first in high then low voice. Rating: 3,5.
4. "Falling in love again"
Argghhhh, what`s that?? Obviously, this song lacks any kind of immaginable tune and harmony. For me, this is a 5`32m of pure noise. This song is probably the worst one in the entire album.
Rating: 0,5.
5. "Icurok"
Hehh. Cool. Nomi simulating a synthesized voice.. that goes over and over again. Looks familiar? Over 4 minutes with the same tune, switching from high to low voice periodically..ughh.
Rating: 1,5.
6. "Rubberband lazer"
A funny "spacy" tune in a rocky style - "I`ll blast you with my rubberband lazer.." Paw paw! Rating: 4,0.
7. "Wayward sisters"
Woww! That`s the way we`d like to hear him. A true Nomi style! His falsetto reaches incredible heights in this Purcell Aria, with "chest attacks" and astonishing strength - awesome, and somewhat creepy. Rating: 5,0.
8. "Ding dong - the witch is dead"
Ahhhhcool!! Another funny song that`s too cool and entertaining to be called "average". This song has some nice instrumental tunes, an background applaus and Nomis` everswitching voice from high to low, that makes you doubt wether this is the one and same person singing. The ending is also funny when he simulates a witch screaming on a firebowl, with an applauding public happy over that the evil witch is finally dead. Rating: 5,0.
9. "Three wishes"
Ah, those three wishes.. The fairy gave Nomi three wishes. What would he wish? Though this song is pretended to be serious, it`s
still funny, especially when Nomi sings in his cracked German accent, and trying to simulate a capricious soprano.
Rating: 4,5.
10. "Simple man"
Probably one of the best tunes on this album. "I`am a simple man, and I do the most simple things a simple man can do". Nowell. Finally Nomi is trying to be a simple man, and do simple things,
instead of being a space cowboy ardently blasting enemies with his "Rubberband lazer". Rating: 5,0.
11. "Death"
Death.. It`s must be said that Nomi was expecting his near end as
a result of AIDS. I think that this Aria by Purcell haven`t been chosen just like that - it was with obvious reason. Not funny at all, pretty much serious and sometimes disturbing - this Aria is defenately not the one he`d like to sing.. Anyway, Nomi goes very high in this Aria, up to G" in fact, with his "Remember me, remember me!!". However, getting somewhat noisy at times, with not a very pleasant tune, this recording gets a lower rating. Rating: 4,0.
12. "Return"
Still in shock after his "Death", Nomi ends this album with this
special gregorian-chant like song. Sung totally in falsetto with no accompainment at all, but in an acoustic space, like a huge
hall, that gives the voice a mysterious, distant, sustained and prolonged echo - this is the only song of this kind in Nomis repertoire. Rating: 5,0.
Well, that was it.
Alex.
Spectacular Synth-Popera.......2003-01-10
There's plenty of variety on Nomi's second album, providing ample exposure for his impressive vocal range. Just as on his debut, the material is an interesting mix of catchy pop, like Just One Look and Falling In Love Again (sung partly in German) and classical pieces like Death, Return and From Beyond, the somber opening number. My favorite tracks include Rubberband Lazer, an addictive pop song with weird country infusions and brilliant bursts of synth, and the theatrical Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead with its singalong chorus. Klaus Nomi was part of the late 70s/early 80s synth explosion, but his embrace of classical music was unique (although OMD came close on Architecture and Morality), as were the operatic vocal styles he explored. This music remains highly original and inspiring.
A UNIQUE STAR'S INDESCRIBABLE 2ND ALBUM.......1999-07-25
Not everyone can hear past the campy-seeming alien persona NOMI was notorious for... to our ears, his work holds up better than most '80s offerings! We saw Klaus's 'debut' at Irving Plaza in Manhattan circa 1979, and knew a star was being born, as he transfixed the packed auditorium with his rendition of a beautiful rare operatic aria for soprano, NAILED by this ghostly Martian! & then he was signed to RCA (Europe), released 2 striking albums, but suddenly croaked from AIDS... There is a Tiny Tim/Eden Ahbez/Liberace facet to the Nomi oeuvre...but also a surprising soulfulness, artistic inventiveness, & range of material you could call daring! Thank God for the Nomi's of the Music World! RIP, Klaus! I hear a domestic compilation is at last in the works...
the cheesiest of cheesy 80's music.......1999-07-13
Painful to listen to. I recommend it only for seriously masochistic individuals or farm animals. Probably used by the East German secret police in their heyday as a means of torturing political prisoners.
Mature.......1999-01-15
Another must-get CD. The seeds in Klaus Nomi's debut album are grown in this second album "Simple Man". The most typical Nomi style "After The Fall", a combination of rock and opera, is a production after "Total Eclipse" in his debut album. "Just One Look", another "Lightning Strikes". "Falling In Love Again", a more playful version. "Death", this aria should be called "When I am laid in Earth", Nomi reached the notes heroically! After all, it's a mature of Klaus Nomi, it's more new wave than his first album. It's really a pity that Nomi can't poplarize his style before his death of AIDS in 1983.

Customer Reviews:
No-Wave PoPera?.......2006-01-01
Klaus was truly an artist on his own planet. An operatic collision of Gary Numan and Tiny Tim? This album combines elements of New Wave, Prog Rock, Disco and authentic Opera into something transcendentally strange and addictive.
Great, Nightmarish, and Yet Dreamy!.......2004-08-25
#1---Klaus Nomi was probably the most mindbending, mindnumbing, and mindblowing entertainer of his day. While many artist wannabees jumped all the way in to performance art, Klaus Nomi came VERY close to stepping out of the "entertainment" boundary without diving exclusively into "the art crowd" world. It's our treat he teetered so close to the line , but let the masses hear and see his bizarre talent!
#2---Klaus Nomi is not for everybody. If you are one of the curious souls who went to see David Lynch's "Eraserhead" and left in disgust before the finish, Klaus Nomi might not be your cup of tea. If it was the storyline of Eraserhead that revolted you, give Klaus a chance, because his songs make more sense. If it was the nightmarish essence of the film that turned you off, you might skip this CD.
#3---This Klaus Nomi album makes for some seriously macabre party music come Halloween! Better yet, confuse your guests by playing "The Monster Mash" (This is a party Dude!) followed by Nomi's "Total Eclipse" (Or is this a gothic ceremony?) followed by "The Munsters' Theme" (Or maybe this is a party after all?)
#4---Klaus Nomi's covers of "Lightning Strikes Again" and "The Twist" are brilliant, very twisted, and gave me the chills at times--- I never thought these particular songs could sound like codeine induced hallucinations!
#5---"Total Eclipse of the Sun" is Klaus Nomi's greatest recording, HOWEVER--- if you ever come across his live performance on "Urrghh! A Music War!" it is vastly superior to this studio recording!
Has Klaus Nomi really been gone for over twenty years? He is sorely missed, and was way ahead of his time! This is some really unique and creative music. Like I said before, not everybody's cup of tea; and that is not a knock on folks who don't dig this music. BUT---perhaps it is an acquired taste? If you are uncertain whether Nomi might appeal to you or not, I say give this CD a chance. If you like it, excellent! If he doesn't win you over after a few listens, the music and cover photo will make for a great conversation piece amongst your friends!
Rock, Pop and Opera.......2003-01-02
The album opens with Keys of Life, a lovely mix of twittering electronics and Nomi's soprano chant. His vocal range is beautifully demonstrated on Lightning Strikes where it switches to falsetto on the refrain, and on The Twist, a soulful, atmospheric number ending in squalls of manic laughter. Nomi Song has a catchy hook, lovely synth lines and snatches of rousing choral vocals, while The Cold Song is an impressive operatic piece and Total Eclipse is a magical blend of rock and classical music. The highlight of the album is the Saint Saens composition Samson and Delilah, sensitively interpreted by Nomi over the most inspired instrumentation, a listening experience that leaves you breathless before it ends with an explosion of electronic noise. This unique album is a successful marriage of rock, pop and various classical styles.
Rush Limbaugh Was Right!.......2002-08-09
I passed by and heard him play some of Klaus' music. He probably shocks people as the guy genuinely seems to enjoy the bouncy, over-the-top style of the late artist. All of you who think you know Rush should know he links to this CD all the time and encourages his listeners to buy it. I'm sure if Klaus were still with us, he'd say "You don't owe me, but thanks."
Nomi style.......1999-01-15
There are some artists who try to combine classical music with pop, and Klaus Nomi is obviously the most succuessful one. Not only because of his theatric make-up and performance, but also his high-range soprano voice! In this self-titled debut album, you can find 40's rock (Lightning Strikes), hard metal (You Don't Own Me) or even "popized" aria (Samson and Delilah), and you just can't find a word to name this strange combination, or you may call it Nomi style! It's a must-get CD, and more you listen to it, more you get into it!

Operatic Synth-Pop.......2003-01-27
This collection contains tracks from Nomi's debut and the follow-up, Simple Man. As such, the material is an interesting blend of catchy synth-pop, like Just One Look and Falling In Love Again (sung partly in German) and serious choral pieces like Death and From Beyond. Rubberband Lazer, an addictive pop song with weird country infusions and brilliant bursts of synth, and the theatrical Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead with its singalong chorus are my favourites here. It's a pity one of his most magnificent numbers, Saint Saens' famous aria Samson And Delilah, has not been included. Apart from that glaring omission, his most famous tracks like Cold Song - an impressive operatic number and Total Eclipse, a magical marriage of rock and classical from the first album, plus the abovementioned highlights from the second album are all here. Klaus Nomi was part of the late 70s/early 80s synth explosion, but his operatic angle was unique. His music remains highly original and inspiring.
A Fine Legacy from a Wonderful Countertenor.......2001-03-11
Someone not familiar with the work of Klaus Nomi might think that two different people are responsible for this collection; how could one person be responsible for both the fun, campy arrangements of popular tunes and the exquisitely sung art song herein? Nevertheless, it's the truth--and the same man, with the same gorgeous voice, did them both. I can understand pointing out the major overlap between this and other CDs, but I have to say that the beautiful "Der Nussbaum" is, to me, worth it. What a shame that he is no longer with us.
NOMI- New Wave Champaign.......1999-07-13
My first piece of advice: If you already own "Klaus Nomi" and "Simple Man" and perhaps "Encore" (although I've never seen it on CD), then you won't need "Collection"; the only songs not on his first two more available CD's are "Der Nussbaum" and "Can't Help Falling In Love". However, if you've never listened to the strains of Henry Purcell sung by the best falsetto since Farinelli, you need this one bad. Like many of the 80's New Wave acts, Klaus Nomi is an aquired taste. While most bands of the day were still trying to learn to play their synthesizers, Klaus was singing arias from "Dido & Aneas". My point being that here was finally an individual who really understood music, and he combined masterfully two of its most potent forces: Rock 'n Roll and Opera. Unfortunately for us all, he succumbed to AIDS on the very verge of fame. I remember listening to his version of "Death", from Purcell's "O Belinda..." shortly after I heard of his passing and wondering if he somehow had seen his own life drawing to a close. Of course some of Klaus's work is much more "up" and some of it, "Ding Dong" for example (yes, from the 'Wizard of Oz'), is downright camp. And, considering that his venue was the early 80's New York club scene, allot of his songs reflect that danceable beat. Whatever style he sings, though, there is the artistry of a well trained voice, which is more than I can say for most current acts. He was much more than his image. He is still missed -- and mourned -- by many, but we shall always have his voice, and that is an exquisite legacy.

Operatic Rock-n-Roll from soprano falsetto.......1998-08-04
I bought the Klaus Nomi LP over ten years ago just for the cover art - Klaus dressed in black and white garb ala Felix the Cat meets Mickey Mouse outfit. It's framed and hanging on my wall above the computer. I had seen Klaus's performance piece "Total Eclipse" in the film "Urgh! A Music War" featuring a lot of punk groups of the early 80's including The Police with Sting. Klaus's music is theatrical and fun to listen to. My wife and I taped his best songs (After the Fall, Rubberband Laser, Nomi Song, Ding Dong, Icurok, Simple Man) for a car trip from Detroit to Toronto and played it over and over all the way there. Our five year old daughter loved Klaus's voice, its trills, his Germanic accent and the popish instrumentation. This artist was a hoot. He rocked and sung with operatic pretensions; there's simply no one like him. If you enjoy passionate, strange, outlandish and completely original artists - check out Klaus - he was unique. And while you're at it.! ..visit his web page. Believe me, his music is just as mesmerizing as his image. (added 8/12/01) A documentary film about Klaus is in the works, now in production by the director of East Side Story.

Why was his English better than his native German?.......2003-12-06
I'm selling a copy of Klaus Nomi's "Encore" I think I got as a novelty gift, probably just like talk show host Rush Limbaugh did. A problem I have with Nomi is that his natural rage of voice (which could reach into the countertenor rage) was way far better than the awful falsetto he uses in a number of his songs. He ends up just mulitating an otherwise beautiful German song as, "Der Nissanbaum", and almost sounds like a screeching chicken. Also how was it that he could sing better in English than in his native German? I can see why so much of his music became more popular in America than in Germany and Europe because we Americans of German heritage were raised with German that is practically as poor as what he presented on his records. On the other hand, British singers as David Bowie and Peter Gabriel are able to sing German with superior pronunciation and flow.
Timeless and Extraordinarily Original.......2002-02-05
Klaus Nomi was literally in a league of his own creatively in the music world of the 80s. It's not likely we'll ever see his unique style and presentation either on the stage or in the recording studio. Sadly, he passed years ago, thus, we have this wonderful collection of his "greatest" hits to enjoy for many years into the future.
I first saw him on Saturday Night Live with David Bowie, and his look totally intrigued me. I first owned ENCORE on vinyl when I was all of 16 years old. This actually is my second CD copy, the first was stolen!
His voice is haunting, elegiac, and romantic depending on how you listen to the songs and what mood you're in at the time. There's even humor in some pieces, like Total Eclipse, The Twist and You Don't Own Me (made famous by Leslie Gore in the 60s.) Sometimes a song like his aria from Samson and Delilah will make you profoundly sad, and other times you will marvel at the power and artistry he was capable of in so many styles of music, from rock n' roll to opera.
Every track is a keeper but especially these gems: Total Eclipse (you can see a live performance clip in the movie URGH!), Cold Song, A Simple Man, Wasting My Time, You Don't Own Me, and of course, the magnificent aria from Samson and Delilah (which I believe is from the Massenet version, likely available in its entirety, with other soloists, on several CD recordings.)
If you own only one NOMI collection, this is THE ONE.
music for space travel.......2000-08-02
Throw all your genres out the window and break out the black lipstick, and be sure and either rent or buy a balcony to stand on and lipsynch... Klaus's distinct ability to transport people to places they've never even dreamed about is in the air on this album, and double plus good, it's a cosmic smattering of all things nomi...
Klassic Klaus Nomi!.......1998-06-16
My wife and I were Dj's in Iowa in the early-80's and believe it or not, Klaus was very popular. Great music to dance to and very 80's. Some faves, Lighting Strikes" and our Number One reguest "You Don't Know Me". I remember these songs as being very popular in France, too! It is too bad that Klaus died of AIDS in the prime of his career.
Klaus Nomi's ENCORE.......1997-12-03
This is the third and last of Nomi's albums made while he was still alive.
It is mostly a Best Of, but it also contains new tracks such as "Der Nussbaum" (Schuman), a live track of "Total Eclipse", and "I Can't Help Falling in Love" in a little strange version.
That CD also includes older songs: "Lightning Strikes", "The Twist", "Samson and Delilah", "The Witch is Dead"...
Even if there is no really new song, "ENCORE" is still worthy.
Try it and you will love it. END

Breathtaking Poperatic Music.......2006-06-07
There's plenty of variety on Nomi's second album, providing ample exposure for his impressive vocal range. Just as on his debut, the material is an interesting mix of catchy pop, like Just One Look and Falling In Love Again (sung partly in German) and classical pieces like Death, Return and From Beyond, the somber opening number.
My favorite tracks include Rubberband Lazer, an addictive pop song with weird country infusions and brilliant bursts of synth, and the theatrical Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead with its catchy singalong chorus. His music has however, improved with age and sounds even better now.
Klaus Nomi was part of the late 70s/early 80s synth wave, but his embrace of classical music was unique (although OMD came close on Architecture and Morality), as were the operatic vocal styles he explored. This album remains highly original and inspiring.
More 24-bit Remastered Genius!.......2006-05-28
Just look at the album cover - how could you doubt this man's genius? "Simple Man" was Klaus's second and final original album, and it's stuffed with pop, new wave and opera gems. Even though he never really managed to become mainstream (and given his totally queer persona and breadth of musical genres it's debatable he could have broken through) he left enough of an impression to intrigue (and scare) decades later. This is my favourite of his albums, mainly because it builds on the debut and is a little more generous with the number of tracks. The Japan-only remaster sounds very crisp and clear, and the bass on tracks like "After The Fall" has real heft. The mini lp sleeve, inner paper sleeve and fold-out lyric sheet are also beautifully reproduced. If you're a little adventurous in your pop tastes I couldn't recommend this more highly.

Customer Reviews:
Klaus Nomi - self-titled (BMG Japan).......2006-12-07
Originally released in 1982,this was the super-strange-o artist's first of just two albums. He passed on in 1983.What prompted me to look this artist up,was that I saw a performance clip from him on the 'Urgh-A Music War' video. Had seen his "Total Eclipse" song on late night cable TV before, but I could never figure out who he was. Tunes here that had me thinking,WHAT the...? were "Keys Of Life", Nomi's weird remake of the Chubby Checker hit "The Twist", the previously mentioned "Total Eclipse" and the only track on this CD I actually sort of like,"Samson And Delilah". I'm giving this title a two-star rating instead of a one-star because I honestly believe there might've been a point to this record. Just haven't figured it out yet. Really bizzare 'new wave'!
KLAUS NOMI.......2006-11-10
GREAT PACKAGE, LOOKS LIKE THE RECORD ALBUM. FAIR+ REMASTERING, I LITTLE OVERCOOKED, BUT THE FEEL IS THERE PLUS IT HAS BETTER DETAIL THAN THE LP. KLAUS WAS SOMEONE SPECIAL AND FROM ANOTHER PLANET. WE WEREN'T READY FOR HIM. AND LIKE MANY BRIGHT STARS, BURN UP MUCH TO QUICKLY. AFTER ALL THIS TIME ITS STILL SAD. BUT THE MUSIC IS SUCH FUN THAT YOU FORGET ALL THAT. NOMI SONG IS STILL GREAT
Unique musical vision.......2006-06-07
The album opens with Keys of Life, a lovely mix of twittering electronics and Nomi's soprano chant. His vocal range is beautifully demonstrated on Lightning Strikes where it switches to falsetto on the refrain, and on The Twist, a soulful, atmospheric number ending in squalls of manic laughter.
Nomi Song has a catchy hook, lovely synth lines and snatches of rousing choral vocals, while The Cold Song is an impressive operatic piece. Total Eclipse is an imaginative blend of rock and classical music, one of the highlights of a remarkable album.
The masterpiece of the album is the Saint Saens composition Samson and Delilah, sensitively interpreted by Nomi over the most inspired instrumentation, a listening experience that leaves you breathless before it ends in an explosion of electronic noise. This unique album is a successful marriage of rock, pop and various classical styles.
24-bit Remastered Genius!.......2006-05-28
Klaus Nomi is remembered today - if at all - as a potential pop genius struck down at the dawn of his career by Aids. This first album (and his second and final, "Simple Man") laid the template for a promisingly bizarre career of new wave pop and richly imaginative arrangements of opera and pop standards. His extremely stylised appearance and dark undertow of vague menace, along with a shrill countertenor voice, made him instantly unforgettable. "Klaus Nomi" is a great pop album able to transcend its 1981 New Wave origins through its sheer variety, and this Japan-only remaster renders Klaus's voice and the often-brilliant arrangements clearer than ever before; It's also nicely reproduced as a cardboard mini lp sleeve with an inner paper sleeve and a fold-out English/Japanese lyric poster. If you're a fan I'd recommend both this issue and the complementary "Simple Man" release (my fave of the two). And don't forget to check out the recent documentary "The Nomi Song", where you can see Klaus in action and realise what all the fuss was about (and mourn the loss).

You must be kidding!.......2004-05-26
Rush Limbaugh foisted Nomi on the world with his gay community update. I remember seeing this dude as a background singer with Bowie on Saturday Night Live many years ago. The first time I heard "You Don't Own Me", I thought I was going to drive off the road from laughing so hard. His version of Lou Christie's "Lightning Strikes" is so funny I thought I was going to bust a gut. Thank you El Rushbo for introducing this guy to the world! By the way, who cut the late Klaus Nomi's hair? It looks like a kewpie doll!
Almost perfect.......2001-09-13
I'm afraid I have to deduct a star for the failure to include either "Wayward Sisters" or his aria from "Samson and Delilah," but this is an excellent introduction to perhaps the most bizarre talent ever to grace the world of rock.
you don't nomi............2000-08-26
but nothing I can say will do justice to his brilliance. What a tragedy that Nomi died from an aids-related illness before he had time to stun the world of ordinary music fans with his unparalled voice and appearance. I saw him only once on TV, on The Old Grey Whistle Test and he was SO different! Listen and be educated.
Klaus Nomi was a brilliant singer.......1999-10-02
This retro of Klaus, the operatic sonic wonder from Germany elicits high drama as well as self humor. His germanic tenor radiates and casts it's spell. I knew Klaus in the east village in the early 80's. I found him visually amazing, and had the fortune of being serenaded in his apt. He sang the great Dietrich song, "Falling in LOve", and his anthem "Total Eclipse". He was an original, silenced too early...a brilliant non-comformist!!Thanks to Hrry Young for the notes on his interesting life in NY.
First-ever US Klaus Nomi album is AWESOME!!!.......1999-08-26
Having musically debuted in 1982 and then tragically die of AIDS the following year, Klaus Nomi wasn't with us long, but his influence has been enduring and his musical accomplishments continually lauded. Collecting the spirit of disco, new wave, classical theatre and opera to create something very new and much greater then the sum of its parts. As part of the early 80's art scene that included everyone from David Bowie to Keith Haring, Nomi took musical inspiration from the throb that was New York. Though only releasing to studio albums, his singles and live work (his performances were just as innovative and have been chronicled as well) carried his gospel to the masses. His interpretations of songs like Lou Christie's "Lightnin' Strikes", Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me" and the Wizard of Oz's "Ding Dong (the Witch is Dead)" are guaranteed to be favorites of anyone who hears them.
Nomi's unfortunate demise at the beginning of what should have been a long and fruitful career was tragic. Because of this, few outside the underground music scene have even heard this amazing new wave innovator, let alone ever witnessed the spectacle and hear the music abstractly defined an era. Without the benefit of MTV, Klaus never achieved the name recognition of Culture Club, Adam Ant, and countless other new wave acts. But, his fans have kept his spirit and vision alive, and his legacy as one of the 80's new wave wonders of the world will be chronicled for years to come.
