I first heard Robert Michaels "Allegro" and the song "Riders on the Storm" on the radio station The Breeze FM 103. I'm a fan of the Doors - and find most remakes of original artists songs not all that good. But when I heard his version I must say both my self and my husband were impressed. We went into HMV, listened to the CD and we were so impressed we bought it. I'm sure we will eventually buy another one and Christmas is just around the corner.

I now have all five of Robert Michaels Albums ( CD's ), the artist is without a doubt one of the best, and I am a devout fan of New Flamenco and just recently acquired these CD's, a great talent and musician. Waiting for more of his music.

I have had this CD since it was released. I have since searched on Robert Michaels looking for follow-ups. This is a moving collection of an awsome flaminco style that just moves me more and more each time I listen to it. Very highly recommended if you like the Spanish/Cuban flavor in guitar that will just keep you wanting more! GIVE US MORE ROBERT MICHAELS!!!

This CD is a great rendition of Robert Michael songs with his great sound. He is a tribute to the new latin and european jazz influences. My hope is that he will be releaseing a new CD with similar sounds in the near future.

          Album Description

          Coloratura soprano Patrice Michaels, best-known for her interpretations of Mozart, baroque, and contemporary music makes her solo recording debut with 25 Romantic songs by 25 composers on this CD. But why is Miss Michaels emphasizing music that's outside her "specialty"? "It's something I think all singers should be able to do," she says. "A couple generations ago, it wouldn't have seemed odd. The best singers were expected to perform Rachmaninov as well as Handel" The disc showcases Miss Michaels' bel canto vocalism through a comprehensive collection of songs spanning 85 years and 8 languages.           Album Description

          The disc includes the world premiere recording of Argento's Songs about Spring for voice and piano, based on poems by e.e. cummings. "This first recording . . . should serve as a model for all future performances," the composer says. Argento composed this song cycle (his first) while still an undergraduate at Baltimore's Peabody Institute of Music. Here, too, is the only available CD recording of Letters from Composers for voice and guitar. Based on letters and fragments of letters written by Chopin, Mozart, Schubert, Bach, Debussy, Puccini, and Schumann, they illustrate a wide range of personal problems having almost no relevance to their compositional careers. The musical settings show Argento's understanding of each composer's expressive style. To Be Sung Upon the Water (Wordsworth settings scored for high voice, clarinet, and piano) is available in only one other version -- a reissue from the 1970s. The cycle is noteworthy for the subtle and sensitive use of clarinet and bass clarinet (performed here by Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal clarinetist Larry Combs). The clarinet reappears in Vaughan Williams' Three Vocalises for Soprano and Clarinet, one of the composer's last works. Vaughan Williams' love of early English folk music is evident in the song selections from Along the Field, his settings of A.E. Housman poems for the unusual combination of voice and violin. These are the only available CD versions of these songs and vocalises. Miss Michaels studied composition with Argento at the University of Minnesota. They share a fondness for intimate vocal forms and a distinct literary sensibility. "Argento's works impress on the listeners a strong musical personality, a result of his being drawn perpetually to the human voice" (New Grove Dictionary of American Music). For her part, Miss Michaels told Fanfare magazine (September / October 1996) in an interview: "I've always been attracted to the literary impulse behind the music." Besides producing musical sounds, she wants to tell stories.

          Well, I'm sure you recognize me as the serial Patrice reviewer (I promise-I'll branch out a little bit sooner or later!). Oh, but Argento! How fun his works are! I've seen recitalists perform these pieces. The obvious highlight for me is the Mozart letter, especially when sung this well, and with such humor. It is rare to hear such warmth so consistently in interpretation of such contemporary (yet distinctly historical in style) vocal works. Brava to Patrice for continuing to champion the talented underdogs (herself included, I suppose) of the music world.

            Album Description

            The Rembrandt Chamber Players perform 20th-century works for Baroque ensemble and harpsichord on their debut recording with Cedille Records. They perform four exemplary works from different genres of the modern harpsichord repertoire, including two by living American composers. Minnesota-based Dominick Argento's "Six Elizabethan Songs" are sophisticated and varied setting of 17th-century English texts (reprinted in the program notes). "In the pantheon of American composers Argento occupies a distinct individual category, outside any certifiable modernistic trend or technical idiom," writes Nicolas Slonimsky in Baker's Biographical Dictionary (1992). "He writes melodious music in a harmonious treatment . . . Audiences, and an increasing number of sophisticated critics, profess their admiration for his unusual songfulness." Elliott Carter's adventurous Sonata for Flute, Oboe, Cello, and Harpsichord, with its delicate dissonances, explores new harpsichord tone colors. As noted in The New Oxford Companion to Music (1983), "the [harpsichord's] expressive peculiarities fit the views of some of those who desire to avoid artificial inflection and who seek the level surface, so to speak, of its limited dynamic range." Czech pianist and composer Ilja Hurnik's music is "marked with impressionistic flavor, while retaining a classical format" (Baker's, 1992). His Sonata da camera recalls the period that spawned the instrumentation assembled for this recording. Manuel de Falla's Concerto for Harpsichord, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, and Cello, a seminal work commissioned by Polish harpsichord virtuoso Wanda Landowska, is one of the most important contributions to the harpsichord's revival. Spanish-music authority Gilbert Chase considers it Falla's masterpiece and the most complete embodiment of the "eternal essence" of Spain. "The keyboard style ... reveals in the classical lucidity of its writing a certain kinship with Domenico Scarlatti" (Baker's, 1992). The Rembrandt ensemble has performed all the works in concert except the Falla: they fell that the concerto's dense textures obscure the harpsichord in live performance, whereas a more even balance is achievable in the recording studio.
