Cheesy 80s music with a few classics..........2007-03-17
I don't own any other albums by Starship (or Jefferson Airplane or Jefferson Starship or any other iteration of this schizophrenic group) and don't consider myself a fan. I bought this album strictly because it was dirt-cheap, and I was familiar with a few of the songs.
Ultimately, the album does deliver their few biggest hits from the 80s, including "We Built This City," "Sara," and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." And those songs are lots of fun, even if primarily for their nostalgic sound.
There are also a few other interesting songs that were new to me, such as "Find Your Way Back." However, most of the other tracks were largely forgettable.
Ultimately, this album is nothing beyond mediocre. Based on other reviews, it appears that true fans will want to look elsewhere. And casual listeners like myself won't find much of value here beyond their few big hits. This disc is tolerable but nothing special.
A Fine Collection of the Later Years.......2006-08-01
For me this is the Starship of my generation,(I do love to 'Somebody To Love')featuring the Fantastic voices of Mickey Thomas & Grace Slick, the more Rock & Pop songs of this period has been unfairly reviewed by some, I would rather have 'We Built This City' as one of the defining songs of the 80's than the most of mess that are examples of the 90's & now! 'Sara' is one the best songs of the 80's, and the huge hit 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now'. These are great songs that still sound good and bring back great memories!
Great songs!.......2005-03-24
Worth it just for 'We Built this City', which was one of the best songs of the 80's.
More of A Bridge Than A Greatest Hits Album........2005-02-13
Jefferson Airplane was considered a really good rock outfit. They were a key part of the sex, drugs and rock n' roll of the 70's. Swiftly they began to change. From battles over the name of the band to member changes to style changes, the group seemed more like three or four bands than one. The musical styling changes prove that. Those changes can be heard throughout this album.
The earlier songs found here, especially "Jane," hearken back to the days when this band was built to rock. Songs like "No Way Out" revealed the changes to come as the band metamorphosed one more time into a pop/arena rock outfit. Of course, this change lead to their big hits of the 80's, such as "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "Sara," which are included here. The album also includes a couple of new tracks which are pretty good, "Good Heart" and "Don't Lose Any Sleep," which show a band embracing their new pop sound to perfection.
Of course, there are always songs that bring about controversy, and "We Built This City" is that song on this compilation. Much like Styx's "Mr. Roboto," this song is either loved or detested by all that hear it. I'm one of those schmucks who loves the song. It's been rated one of the cheesiest songs ever on a multitude of television shows and in magazines. It's also been called one of the best pop tunes ever. No matter which side of the fence you're on, it's here for you to sample.
In closing, all you can really say about this album is that it gives you a taste of what once was Jefferson Airplane, what became Jefferson Starship, and what eventually went down in flames groupwise as Starship. All of the songs on this album are keepers, but there's nothing especially groundbreaking here. Just keep in mind that Starship is the pop version of Jefferson Airplane, and you won't be let down.
This is a good, over-the-top '80s rock album!.......2004-05-31
I liked this Starship album compiling their hits between the name changes of Jefferson Starship and Starship. I loved Jane when it came out in 1979 and the other songs from '84 to '90 are full-blown over-the-top rockers! They were like a milder Van Halen under the newer name with the excess and bombast. The pre-'84-85 songs don't grab me as much as the others. Some of the songs actually sound good in Atlanta--the skyline of that city matches very well to the songs and landscapes. We Built This City still rocks, I still like the calm to blasting vibes of No Way Out, Sara still has that mysterious feel to it, It's Not Over still is charging, and I still like the Mike Shipley sound of It's Not Enough. Paul Kantner and Mickey Thomas were good as the lead singers, but no one mentioned Marty Balin? To me, he was also another strong lead singer in that band when he was in it. Through a lot of conflicts over the group name, this album justifies their success in the '80s. Surprising that most of the songs average in the 4 1/2 minute range.

A fine import collection of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship.......2006-04-21
This is without a doubt the best career-spanning collection of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship. It's got all of the hits and some rarities that you may not find on another disc. The sound is great and this is a must-have for fans.
They built this city in green sun, on blue earth........2003-01-18
My intrigue for (what was originally) the Jefferson Airplane goes back to the late 60s. "Somebody To Love" was the song and "Surrealistic Pillow" was the album that galvanized me. The Airplane and its subsequent incarnations, which flew under the Jefferson Starship (even, temporarily, "Starship Jefferson") and Starship banners, and which experienced a somewhat constant change in personnel to go with their ever growing and maturing, creative direction, always had something--or someone--magical to offer its devotees. The tirelessly intricate, even ornately mindblowing, bleeding intensity from the lead guitar finessing of Jorma Kaukonen and later Craig Chaquico was a hallmark of their sound. (Both were savagely underrated and therefore often absent from pundits' lists of greatest ever guitarists.) Jack Casady was a masterful, but never pretentious, bass player--along the line of a Chris Hillman. He was later replaced by ex-Quicksilver Messenger Service great, David Freiberg. The scintillating vocals of founder Marty Balin and Grace Slick, especially on ballads was, to say the very least, achingly romantic and profoundly sensuous. The former was also a stellar songwriter, in the same league as Gene Clark, Justin Hayward and Michael Brown. The latter, a former fashion ingenue, was dextrous with many instruments and proficient at composing, too. Yes, when the "San Franciscan Valkyrie" and the boys melded, even though the harmonies were arranged, at times, deliberately apart, it was crooning or roaring reaching a new dimension in rock. Later on, Mickey Thomas, who possessed marvelous, anthem-rock like pipes, would be the one to pour out, so profusely, his boyish hurts over the mic. Then there was the late Papa John Creach's demonic and soulful fiddling, tantalizing us like a rock Paganini. Certainly no one forgets Canadian born Skip Spence, the iconoclastic and ephemeral first drummer and later founder of the seminal group, Moby Grape. His replacement, Spencer Dryden, would later find notoriety with former Byrds bassist Skip Battin in Jerry Garcia & company's New Riders Of The Purple Sage. However, it was John Barbata, earlier with the Turtles and later with CSN, who I admired most banging on the skins, with his flamboyant twirling. Not to forget well travelled drummer Aynsley Dunbar, who did stints with fellow 'Friscans Journey, as well as Frank Zappa, with and without the Mothers of Invention. One of the doyens, Paul Kantner (who not long ago attempted to revive, again, the Jefferson Airplane), and many other luminaries flying with the Airship (an omnibus term I will call all developments of the group) had unique talents.
Their oeuvre encapsulated elements that were diverse, if not, as far as mind-expansion was concerned, divine, though nothing was ever too sacred--whether theological or political--to assail or desecrate. This was because they took it upon themselves to expose the debased and fallen "Empire"--anything they found hypocritical in the establishment or society at large--by announcing this through the "Revolution," of their music. Sound effects often reflected their themes, to complement dazzling light shows at their concerts. They were, after all, psychedelic and conquered the audiences at the Fillmore, Monterey, Woodstock, Altamont and elsewhere with their sound. Space travel, mixed with doses of Orientalia, jazzed up with hallucinogenic blues, through synthesizers--whatever--maintained an ever evolving and pleasing concoction. Strangely enough, the Airship, like their legendary California cousins, the Byrds, started out as folk-rockers.
But what of this "Greatest Hits" collection? Like so many other artists from the 60s, 70s and 80s, the work of the Airship has been obsessively repackaged by avaricious record company executives. So, what compilation does the discerning ear sagaciously select? Well, I bought most of their original, early albums and some of the latter-day releases, as well as curios by offshoots of the Mother Ship, from the late 60s to the mid 70s and decided on the compilation route in the late 80s. However, none of the single or double vinyl albums, single CDs or CD box sets covered all periods of the group extensively. With a prodigious band like the Airship it just was not feasible to include everyone's favourite number. Please keep in mind that many of the latter day Airship albums, after the world smash "Red Octopus," were not so consistent. (The same fate befell the Moodies after "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour.") And I always thought that the cynosure, Grace Slick, played a lesser role in the twilight years of the Ship. Any anthology dedicated to the Airship should therefore pay heed to these factors. In any event, the works in this "Greatest Hits" package were either hits, sides from singles or choice album cuts, chronologically culled from their three (appropriately leaning less heavily on the second, and less still on the third--as they progressively got more commercial) eras. The first seventeen tracks are by the Jefferson Airplane, 1966-1972; the next twelve tracks by the Jefferson Starship, 1975-1984; and the last six tracks are by the Starship, 1985-1989. The pieces I personally relished the most from all of the aforementioned line-ups are, respectively: "Comin' Back To Me," "Good Shepherd," "Caroline," "Miracles," "We Built This City" and "Sara." This CD is worth its price for these songs alone because they all possess memorable hooks. The sometimes arcane, but provocative doggerel is there too. What masterpieces by the Airship are missing from this CD? There are just too many to enumerate, but I would say the song I revere more than any other by them, is the most chillingly exquisite stentorian Gracie has ever vocalized: David Crosby's "Triad" (which the Byrds refused to release at the time, believing it to be too racy, remember?)
All in all, this is a must have for not just the uninitiated, but the grateful aficionados, as well. The Jefferson Airplane/Starship is the quintessential band to soar out of San Francisco (my apologies to Chocolate Watch Band fans and Deadheads). Get this treasure trove, "Greatest Hits," now because they built this city "in green sun, on blue earth."

An enjoyable import which sees the return of Starship.......2005-10-26
This version of Starship's greatest hits was released as an import, in 2003, through Brilliant Records. As you may tell by taking a closer look at the cd (front and back), or by reading other reviews, this is not the original Starship. You'll also find that these are not the original versions of these hit songs. What you have is the current lineup of Starship (as of 2002) rerecording these songs live in the studio. This new lineup is sans Grace Slick, who is no longer involved with the band. However, that is not such a bad thing.
The truth is that Starship was not given their due by rock critics or certain rock fans (mostly those who put Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship high up on a pedestal). To a degree, they had a point. Starship's 1980's material sounds very dated now. What this recording does is give these songs a little bit of an update and makes them sound very fresh. There are less keyboards and heavier guitars. This lineup of Starship may have complete unknowns (other than Thomas), but they do these songs justice. In fact, many of them are improved upon, compared to the original versions from the 1980's. The new take on "We Built This City" is far better than the original. I dare you to listen to it. The song is given a longer solo and outro. The traffic report in the middle of the song, which was the cause of so much criticism, is long gone. Mickey Thomas (who sung many of these tunes originally) handles all of the lead vocals here. Hearing Mickey sing, "We Built This City" all by his lonesome (without Grace Slick) is different, for sure. Different is a good thing, though.
The tunes here include not just the Starship tunes but some Jefferson Starship cuts, as well. A devoted fan, who can distinguish those two eras, will know which songs are which. "Wild Again" (Starship) originally came from the 'Cocktail' movie soundtrack. A lot of these other cuts come from various studio albums, which I won't bother to label. Other notable remakes include, "Fooled around and fell in love" along with "Nothing's gonna stop us now."
For the most part, everything on here was a hit, although a couple of these songs, you may never have heard of. Seeing that this version of 'Greatest Hits' is an import, it may take some searching to try to find it offline in a music store. If you enjoy this release, you'll be very interested in another Starship import titled, 'Greatest and Latest.' That release not only contains these same versions of Starship's hit songs, but also a separate dvd.
I recommend buying this if you enjoyed the 80's Starship music. Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship fans could probably skip this one, but I am sure they already made up their minds about this cd before reading any reviews. With that said, there are plenty of Jefferson Starship/Starship greatest hits collections out there. A few of these are from major labels and are recommended for those of you who would rather have the 1980's (original) versions of songs like, "We built this city." This album here ('Greatest Hits', 2003, Brilliant) is easy to distinguish from the others due to the cover art (no Grace Slick in the picture) and also the fact that this 'Greatest Hits' states that these are rerecordings. These versions have been licensed off, repackaged and appear on some other (inferior) Starship greatest hits collections, so watch out.
Brilliant? HA!.......2005-06-02
I've never heard something so rediculous in my entire life! What are they trying to pull? The whole album is a re-recording of old songs, and not by the original band members. I can't believe they even dare to sell this tripe. I'm soooooooo angry. I'm buying the Cocktail Soundtrack. At least that has the REAL version of Wild Again. I'd be more angry if I didn't have another greatest hits album. I really only bought it for Wild Again. I am sooooooo angry about this. Real Starship fans will stay away. Try the Camden Records Greatest Hits album.

JEFF STAR TAKE A NOISE DIVE.......2006-05-02
I love JA, JS and any other combo of the core members of this band. This however, is shameful. A complete and utter mess. Even for the Jefferson completist. You must pass on this album. The quality is pathetic. JS needs to record a new studio album and redeem themselves. Do not waste your money!!
I know why this cd was not edited!.......2006-04-28
Have you ever tried to cut off the bruised and chalky parts of a peach, only to find that you have nothing left but the slimy pit?
Had there been any sane editors to inject their opinions on this "project," not only would the stupid banter between songs have been excised, but there would be NO songs left to include!
One previous (2-star) reviewer understates how bad the sound quality was. Not one song was clean. I love live cds, but, please, pick a night when the band was in good form, not banging around and singing in whatever key and whenever they want!
Even studio favorites like "White Rabbit" were butchered here. The word "rabbit" will no longer conjure up thoughts of Easter, but will bring to mind the word "crucified."
I bought the cd with no idea that a cover of "Wooden Ships" could be rendered so undiscernable as to make me shut the dang thing off!
Only song 14, "Ride The Tiger," was worth enduring for the free-form guitar portion.
To make my $1.50 cd worth the $2.49 postage, let me have some fun suggesting a title for this cd:
"Kanter's Banters," "Eat A Rotten Peach," "Coming Out Of The Garage Closet," "No-Nuke Puke," "Get Me Some Digital Scissors," or "They Just Ate Some Kind Of Mushroom!" Most fitting for any of us foolish buyers would be "Just Shoot Me."
Jefferson Starship-'Greatest Hits:Live At The Fillmore(CMC).......2004-12-19
I'll give it a 3 1/2 star rating.'Greatest...' may not be the best live CD ever, but it's decent.I saw the band awhile after the release of this disc, and TECHNICALLY,it was Jefferson Airplane. They just HAD to go with the 'Starship',for legal reasons.I met up with guitarist Paul Kantner, himself and he was telling me all about it.Also mentioned that he,himself was very dissapointed in the way this CD turned out.I couldn't tell you what he's talking about because the CD is a keeper. You know, one of the CD's in your collection that you plan to hang onto UNLESS you just HAD to part with it after being layed-off,fired or even bailing a friend or ex-girl friend out of jail.Anyway,'Greatest Hits:Live...' is a bit similar to the live concert I saw. Many Airplane gems are here for your listening pleasure.Tunes like "Plastic Fantasic Lover","Somebody To Love","Crown Of Creation","White Rabbit","Volunteers" and the Crosby,Still&Kantner tune "Wooden Ships".Wanted to also mention that it certainly wouldn't be Airplane without vocalist/frontman Marty Balin.Grace Slick's replacement does a very good job of carrying the Airplane into the 21st century.Old hippie music that's been fully revived, and well it should be.A should-have.
The sound quality sinks this one.......2004-03-18
This release was recorded by JS in November, 1998, on the tour supporting the "Windows of Heaven" album. If one was going strictly on performance, the album rates as OK. The performances aren't particularly stellar or innovative, but they are solid, with the sound basically the same as on the 1995 live release "Deep Space/Virgin Sky". Indeed, over half the selections included here can also be found there.
The repetoire spans the history of the Marty Balin/Paul Kantner led Airplane/Starship lineups. The male vocals are a bit rough as these two guys push 60, but they are certainly still spirited.
And while purists may balk at someone else singing Grace Slick's songs, her (third) replacement Diana Mangano has a beautiful, powerful voice. Her vocals on the classics "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" certainly do justice to the songs.
However, all of this is seriously marred by the abysmal sound quality. It's a disaster - the audio sounds very muffled, with the highs and lows virtually missing and poor stereo separation.
There may be a reason for this. The video of the concert was released on cable on New Year's Day, 1999, and the sound may have been mixed for TV broadcast. Which means that it may have sounded fine when coming out of a mono TV speaker, but it's totally unacceptable as a CD. No producer is credited, and it shows. Since this is not an archive release, but a new 1990's recording, there is simply no excuse for this shoddiness. The recording should have been totally remixed prior to this release.
For this reason, this can really only be recommended for JA/JS completists. Anyone who wants an introduction to live Jefferson Starship would be better off seeking the new expanded "DS/VS" album, (featuring Mangano's predecessor, the wonderful Darby Gould, and Slick guesting), which now contains the complete show.
You'll get similarily strong performances as this CD, but you'll actually be able to HEAR them!
What a shame!.......2001-08-31
I can't believe Paul Kantner would put his name on this.

Rerecorded and chopped up songs.......2004-06-29
This cd is culled from the import-only Starship release titled, 'Greatest and Latest.' Vocalist Mickey Thomas released 'Greatest and Latest' in 2003 (never in the US) with a different lineup of Starship. The songs were all rerecorded versions of Starship, Jefferson Starship and Mickey Thomas tracks, under the Starship banner with the current lineup. The new studio recordings happened in 2002. That 'Greatest and Latest' cd contained fourteen songs and came packaged with a dvd, I have the songs from that album.
On the plus side, the rerecorded songs sound great. "We built this city" and "Nothing's gonna stop us now", given all the times I heard them, sound quite different with a stripped down production, louder guitars and minus Grace Slick's voice. Without Grace being there, Mickey Thomas handles all lead vocals. It's interesting to hear him sing verses in songs that were originally handled by Grace Slick.
So the new versions of the songs sound good, which is why I give the album two stars. The songs from 'Greatest and Latest' were licensed for several Starship budget compilations in the US, such as 'Forever Gold', 'Greatest Hits-Delta' (this compilation right here) and 'Greatest Hits-Brilliant.'
The Delta company that put out this cd, for some reason, decided to cut short three of the tracks on this cd. The rerecorded version of "We built this city" runs over six minutes long on 'Greatest and Latest' as well as the other US budget compilations. On this cd it is under five, as the label chops out the great closing instrumental to the song. The new recording of "Fooled around and fell in love" was originally five and a half minutes long on other cd's it appeared on, but here it is again under five minutes. Additionally, the rerecorded track "Stranger" is also five and a half minutes long, or so, and that is also chopped up to under five minutes.
I don't understand the decision since it is only ten tracks and the cd clocks in at roughly fifty minutes. They could have fit the extra 40 or so seconds cut out of those 3 tracks. It all sounds like a hatchet job or bad radio edit. Additionally, the 'Greatest and Latest' import has the full set of 14 rerecorded songs and this one only uses ten of those new recordings.
The point is, the rerecorded tracks sound great. This collection of them, though, sucks. If you want to hear the new versions, get the import 'Greatest and Latest' off Ebay, which has all 14 rerecorded songs. Otherwise, pick up 'Forever Gold' or 'Greatest Hits-Brilliant' (both under the Starship name).
Pretty ordinary or worse - even the big hits.......2004-03-10
Having seen Starship ranked by Blender as the fifth worst artist in music history, it is embarrasing to recall and admit that I once bought a "Greatest Hits" compilation by them.
However, as a child I must admit to adoring their hits "We Built This City", "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" as a child, so that my interest in them when I was wanting to collect the commercial music of that decade is understandable.
It was clear to me even back in 1996, though, that whatever the catchiness and apparent (not real) charisma of Grace Slick on "We Built This City" and especially "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", the rest of the material included on Starship compilations (they're all naturally much the same) was horrible by any standards. Basically, it had the loud pomposity and thickly produced electric guitars that even then I could recognise as having almost no substance or feeling in them. Thus, even before I began exploring new styles of music, it appeared to me that Starship had nothing to offer me.
There was nothing memorable about any of their earlier songs with Paul Kantner - not one remotely memorable hook - and his vocals and those of Mickey Thomas sounded mumbled with thinner (but no less airy) production. Indeed, as they are produced, most of the material on this album sounded and sounds literally featureless and really boring. Even the two ballads "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" have lost the tenderness and beauty they once gave me.
Whilst Starship might not deserve to be so high on Blender's list of the worst bands ever, their music was still of little if any value.

Spanning the Entire Flight.......2005-12-10
I've long been a fan of all things Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship, but I've also been aware of a definite two-camp war among their fans: Marty Balin vs. Mickey Thomas. I don't feel the need to choose sides. I think all eras of JA/JS/S produced great music, and the unique vocal style of Grace Slick ties the whole collection together. Added to which, this is (or, I guess I should say, was) a dirt cheap price for a two-disc, 35-song collection spanning more than 20 years, from the Woodstock days of "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" to the middle years of "Ride the Tiger" and "Miracles" to the hit-laden period of "Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now."
Yes, "We Built This City" has aged very poorly, but if you set aside your Balin/Thomas differences and check this out, I'm willing to bet you'll make some pleasant discoveries on both sides of the fence. After all, isn't that what the authors of "Volunteers" would want? Peace.
