Alban Berg's musical language is difficult to understand (at least in first listening), but when listening more times, we notice that, actually in his music, there is a very mystic or impressive and lyric atmosphere. So, I think that he is a "Romantic" modern. Just, he expressed these lyric atmospheres with realist and striking language. Still, he was used 12-tone system, but he was not forget tonality and used the both styles (even so he used jazz passages, especially in Lulu). In other words: Berg is one of the most famous and important composers and he impressed the composers came after him (ex. Shostakovich, Britten, Henze)

This is an essential collection and highly recommended.

EMI have a enormous archive to pick their recordings from, and that of course makes it easy to find first rate interpretations of all the arias included in this collection, and I do think that almost all of the arias are wonderfully sung here. It may be possible to find better performances of single numbers here and there, but I've not yet heard a more complete, wellmatched, and so thrillingly sung collection.

Well then, is there nothing wrong with this compilation? You might find it a little odd that there are so many soloarias and so few duets, terzettos a.s.o, especially since the drama in operas oftenly is greater in numbers with more than one singer. You might also wish that some of the recordings had been a little more modern (most of these recordings were made during the 50's, 60's & 70's) giving place to younger performers that still are singing on the stages, but those are minor objections when the over all quality is so high.

The maybe strongest objection to this collection is that there is not one single part from any of Wagner's operas, and not any number sung in german, nor is there any parts from modern or russian operas. That may be a miss if you're interested in Wagner, russian and modern opera - on the other hand I think you should watch Wagners, russian and modern operas before listening to recordings of them - and if you've seen them and liked them you will probably buy the whole opera anyway. Therefor I still think that this is a extremely strong and complete compilation - the best I've run into so far. Easy to listen to, yet never banal.

Album Description

The Paris Sisters' honey-coated harmonies formed a bridge between the sweet sounds of such pre-rock groups as the McGuire Sisters ("Sincerely") and the saucy rhythms of true "girl groups" like the Angels ("My Boyfriend's Back"). Comprised of three real-life sisters - Priscilla, Albeth, and Sherrell - the group began recording for Decca in the mid-50's and reached their commercial zenith with a handful of singles for the Gregmark label, all produced by a young Phil Spector - before he built his famous "Wall Of Sound."

After Gregmark, the Paris Sisters recorded for variety of labels before settling at Reprise in 1965. Working with Jack Nitzsche (another Phil Spector alumnus) and legendary mover-and-shaker Jimmy Bowen, they waxed a series of singles culminating in 1967 with Sing Everything Under The Sun, the definitive album of their career. Among the tracks were four Priscilla Paris originals plus gems from Gerry Goffin& Carole King, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill, and the estimable Burt Bacharach. Anchored by Priscilla's seductive purr, the Paris Sisters stamp these songs with their smooth-but-sexy trademark.

Initially a commercial flop, Everything Under The Sun has grown in stature over the years, becoming a highly sought-after rarity. Now it's available again, mastered in brilliant stereo from the original master tapes. This CD reissue includes a 16-page booklet with color photos, new liner notes, and a special memorial tribute written by Albeth and Sherrell Paris to their recently departed sister, Priscilla.
