I had never heard of Hazel O'Connor until this year. I am a huge fan of Punk, yet I don't remember her or "Breaking Glass".
I bought the soundtrack after it was recommended to me. I liked it when I heard it, and gave it a rest for a few months. I popped it back into the CD player about 2-weeks ago and Hazel has temporarily bumped Ray Davies (who had previously precluded my ability to listen to anything other than the Kinks). The songs are instantly 'catchy', but upon further and extended listening they become infectious. I don't know how it all fits into the film as I did not see it, but the music stands on its own quite well.
From what I know about Ms. O'Connor, she is pretty much a little-known pioneer. I don't know any of her other music, but this CD makes me curious all the more. I highly recommend "Breaking Glass" to anyone who enjoys post-Punk or New Wave music from the 80s.

As soon as I saw the movie Breaking Glass I was sold! The songs are so addictive! Hazel O'Connor's vocals are stunning, haunting and powerful. My very favourites include Blackman, Big BRother, Writing on teh Wall and If Only... excelent album- buy it now! and see the movie!

Reminiscent of Lene Lovich's powerful work, Hazel O'Connor absolutely blew me away the first time I heard this. I only knew this music from the soundtrack, a gift from a Dutch friend when it was first released. Then, to see the music attached to dangerous, disturbed images in the movie was almost too much for one sitting. Through it all, however, is O'Connor's voice, raging against the straighjacket placed around us by society, industry and our blind obedience to technology at any cost.

The amazing thing is this jarring, strident album has real lyrics, real melody, harmony. It is music - in a genre when those values are often ignored or rejected.

I have to agree with the reviewer from Spokane. Finding this soundtrak on CD has been a journey 10 years + in the making. I too saw the movie on Nightflight as a preteen and have had these songs stuck in my head ever since. I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of punk music (with the exception of Sonic Youth, RATM and early Nirvana) but this definitely sticks to the ribs and of course, it's always a treat to hear a female vocalist more concerned with screaming out lyrics than which crochet tank top to wear in her latest video. This is a gem and after all these years of searching for the disk, I can honestly say my life is complete.

    Having just seen the lovely Hazel on her intimate Torch to Flame tour last night in Bracknell, this album is a great reminder of a stunning concert.

    Whilst Beyond the Breaking Glass is a very different work from the visceral energy of Cover Plus or Breaking Glass, the laid-back Celtic influence adds a whole new dimension to her powerful songs and has promoted this album on very first listen to my all-time favourite chill-out CD (sorry Beth!).

    The classic punk anthems Big Brother and Blackman work surprisingly well, with Hazel's astonishingly vibrant voice conveying more emotion now than the naked aggression of her early material. The Celtic road she is now travelling is most apparent in the impassioned Blackwater Side and the achingly beautiful Scamaill. The tribute to Hazel's late friend Rebecca is tenderly empathetic without ever being over sentimental. Still Breathing (that's the big audience participation one if you ever see her live!) is a gloriously uplifting anthem to life - carpe diem could be its subtitle. Driftwood is another highlight - an instantly memorable song with heavy autobiographical overtones. Her most famous song, Will You , is surely one of the most sensual songs about lovemaking ever written. But does it work without the classic sax solo? Of course it does! The haunting sound of Éamonn Galldubh on low whistle gives a beautiful ethereal quality to the fade-out and, believe me, Hazel's vocals have never sounded more sensual (live, Hazel does the instrumental bit on mouth-organ, giving the song a more gutsy, bluesy feel). Finally, the title track, an inspiring song about life's journey, will send you to bed with its memorable chorus stuck in you head.

    Thanks for the music Haze (and for taking the time to chat with me!). Carry on like this and you won't go far wrong!

      Over twenty years after its initial release, Hazel O'Connor's debut, Breaking Glass, remains the most widely-known, and, arguably, best-loved album of her career so far. A true original, O'Connor took the new wave sound to whole new worlds. "Writing on the Wall," "Give Me an Inch," and "Monsters in Disguise" are raucous and energetic. The ballads, the determined "If Only," and O'Connor's signature song, the melancholy "Will You," are the centerpieces of the album. "Eighth Day" possesses some truly ridiculous lyrics, but is irresistible nonetheless. In fact, the only serious criticisms I have are the lyrics, which are sometimes marred by unsophistication and a general lack of cleverness, and, at times, the arrangements, particularly on the album's nadir, the plodding, repetitive "Who Needs It." Tony Visconti's production is sonically impressive throughout. O'Connor's songwriting skills would later improve drastically; Cover Plus, released the following year, would boast far better songs than those that appear on this album. I would recommend Cover Plus over Breaking Glass for casual listeners who want to hear some of O'Connor's early-'80s output, yet Breaking Glass is also an excellent album, and a good souvenier of the film from which the music is taken.

        I enjoyed watching the movie during my high school years in England (now live in the U.S.A.). I purchased the original sound track but have it only on a vinyl record. Listening to this one brings back old memories. Hazel O' Connor is a good singer. It appears she had little success after this movie soundtrack. I would count this soundtrack as her master piece. I never heard about her after leaving England. This soundtrack is very differcult to find.
