4 out of 5 stars Surpriseingly great.......2007-05-13

I got the CD for just one song, Calling all Angels and then listened to all of it...I was really pleasantly surprised, they are really quite excellant....
LOL!!And I'm an old Rock and Roller that doesn't usually like the new stuff...

totally in love with train. this cd ROCKS!!!! gotta love the live stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Train.......2007-03-12

I saw Train at a concert in Atlanta last summer. I had never heard them before and I really loved them. Alive at Last was a gift and I like it a lot. It has my favorite songs on it, and I enjoy the live aspect.

5 out of 5 stars Trains Alive at Last CD.......2007-01-26

I love this CD ! I listen to it over and over.
I have other Train CDs that I also enjoy, but this one
has all my fav Train songs on it. "When I look to the sky" moves me in so many ways ! : )

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Done. Train at their Best........2006-07-05

Alive At Last was actually the first Train CD I owned. And quite frankly, I'd prefer them live to recorded any day. The band seems to be having a lot of fun performing and it makes you get in a good mood as well. Some people are complaining about the audience, but I think it makes the CD that much better. The vocals are dead on, for the most part, and there are some songs you can't help but dance to.

My favorites...
1. Meet Virginia
2. Save The Day (I love how it starts out)
3. Get To Me
4. Landmine
5. All American Girl (probably my absolute favorite song on the album)
6. When I Look To The Sky (IMO, the best vocal track)

4 out of 5 stars Great Recording.......2007-05-12

I have been a Dan Hicks fan for years. This album (CD) is one of his top three. I highly recommend it.
Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys meet Manhattan Transfer.......2006-10-12

Or Spike Jones meets Asleep at the Wheel? Cowboy music for city slickers? Dan's band was a revolving door with many permutations and pretty tough to classify. The one thing you can tell is that they sure did have fun making this music. 'Last Train to Hicksville' has always been my personal favorite. It's their tightest (all things being relative--these were pretty loose folks) sounding effort with an eclectic mix of songs for all ages and the best corp of Lickettes.

5 out of 5 stars Not the Last VW to Hicksville.......2006-06-06

I was soooo stoked when my ex-boyfriend Joe popped this tape in my car one day. It never, ever, never ever EVER came out of there again....until we broke up (it WAS his, I'm not cruel!) And besides, I found it on Vinyl up in Portland 2 years later! Delicious, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, how can you NOT like everything this guy does? Even my grampa likes this record, and BTW I'm 24, he's 84. :)

5 out of 5 stars The final flowering of an awesome band.......2005-12-31

The addition of drums and electric (Charlie Christian-esque) guitar pushes this to the top of the heap as regards Hicks. Yeah, the songwriting includes Naomi Ruth Eisenberg's "Success," but that is what your skip button is for. I wish he had signed with a different label than Blue Thumb...they went belly up and just couldn't promote these guys the way Warner's pushed Maria Muldaur, who (though I love her) isn't quite Maryann Price's equal. Swings sweetly, with humor.

4 out of 5 stars Part of the 5? awesome 70's lps from Dan Hicks & his H.L.s.......2005-12-04

Really, once you're a fan, you can't overlook this album. There's too much on it that delights. More of the same vein of music that the band cranked out to perfection on 'Where's the Money' and their other 70's albums. Light hearted, fun, emotionally involving. It's gotta be a combo of the song writing and the various musicians who blend together to make this magic sound. There's not the same consistency of classic songs here but it's a lovely album nonetheless. Been listening to all their albums from the 70's since the 70's and they all age very well. chrisbct@hotmail.com

3 out of 5 stars A3 goes acoustic.......2007-03-15

The jury is still out on this one. The versions are missing that gruff kick that attracted me to A3 in the first place. I like it - but it is not one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars What This Band Should Be All About.......2005-10-31

I own all four of A3's studio albums and I just purchased this album, which features mostly acoustic versions of songs from their first three albums.

The quality of A3's works have declined sharply since their first great album, "Exile On Coldharbour Lane." Their latest release, "Outlaw," is almost unlistenable.

But "Mashville" is a great album, and the best song on here is the closer, "Peace In The Valley." This band is very unique and they produced two solid albums to begin their careers, with the beautiful sound of "country acid house music." "Power In The Blood," their third album, contained the excellent "Bullet Proof." It is a hard driving and rocking song. The treatment given to that song on this volume is a complete 180 degree turn musically. It is almost funny if you hear the original version first, but stands up on its own after further listening.

The piano, harmonica playing, and acoustic guitars sound lovely, and Larry Love's vocals are emotional, gritty and sincere. This is country rock at its absolute finest, and is a form I wish A3 would stick with.

Unfortunately, they seem more bent on catering to the ravers and nightclubs. While "Outlaw" was not as bad in this respect as "Power," they just cannot seem to write any good tunes anymore. Their creative candle burned out way too soon.

Having said all of that, if you loved the first album then this album is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars A3 is a great band.......2005-06-30

I bought this CD to listen to the Soprano's theme, but loved the whole album. I have since bought every other of their CD's and they are an awesome band.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good without the techno.......2004-04-22

"Last Train to Mashville Vol.2, or "Last Train to Mashville" as it has been retitled for American audiences, proves Alabama 3 doesn't need a synthasiser or a booming base line to sound good. This is, essentially, a greatest hits album without all the electronic bells and whistles, and it sounds better than most anything played on current radio. Some of the best tracks include a pure country rendition of John Prine's "Speed of the Sound of Lonliness", accoustic versions of "Bulletproof", "Woke Up This Morning", "Too Sick to Pray", and of course "You Don't Dance to Techno Anymore". I'd also like to add that if you enjoy this album, to head over to Alabama 3's official website and order "The Last Train to Mashville Vol.1". It's sold only on their site, and it is a companion piece to this album.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A CD that leaves us feeling in high spirits and content with the overall set.......2007-03-17

Playing Time - 48:47 -- Last Train Home continues to ride the wave. While based in the Washington area, they won a dozen WAMMIEs (Washington Area Music Awards) and have built both a solid reputation and fanbase over the years. Last Train Home's latest eclectic alt-country effort (their fourth album overall) includes eleven originals, ten by guitarist/vocalist & frontman Eric Brace and one penned by guitarist Steve Wedemeyer. The band has been cranking out the tunes for about ten years, and Brace relocated to Nashville in 2003. Delivering a confident and personalized roots rock sound, Last Train Home also includes Jen Gunderman (keyboards, accordion, percussion), Jim Gray (bass), and Martin Lynds (drums, percussion). Jen and Martin contribute background vocals. Also appearing in the mix are Kevin Cordt (trumpet), Claire Small (backing vocals on "The Color Blue"), and Tom Mason (banjo on "You").

The title track opens the set with a desire to move on beyond broken hearts and promises despite the availability of one "last good kiss." The set makes a dynamic segue to the melodic electric guitar riff of "Flood," a song about being carried away on the rising tide of love. A poignant ballad with acoustic overtones, "Anywhere But Here" expresses the yearning to find new direction. In fact, many of Brace's sentiments are about his optimistic needs, wishes and dreams, through thick and thin, always trying to keep an upbeat attitude despite adversity and rejection. Gunderman's accordion gives the band a distinctive Texas border sound, and my guess is that they're building a legion of fans in the Lone Star State at roadhouses and dance halls where they perform. The 5-minute "Go Now" and 7-minute "May" express some of Brace's most pensive and reflective moments -- "be brave enough to let it all in, always give more than you take." Putting these two relaxed songs back-to-back at the midpoint of the set creates a whole different mood, one that is captivating but some may feel is enervating and causes the set to lose some of its energy. I hope that lyrics for their songs will be uploaded soon to the band's website because listeners need to contemplate and reflect upon them.

The second half of the set make some clear and convincing statements, but I felt some additional background vocals would have sweetly embellished choruses on songs like "I'm Coming Home," "Kissing Booth," and "Marking Time." The combination of percussion, trumpet and Claire Small's vocal backing make the album's unique closer, "The Color Blue" awash with an impressionistic azure character that leaves us feeling in high spirits and content with the overall set. Album Description

Johnny was born in New York and raised in Baton Rouge, but Memphis has always held a special place in his heart; in fact, `Memphis' was the title of his first hit back in 1964! And on this 1998 album, Johnny taps into that time-honored Memphis blues tradition for a great set of songs whose relaxed, shuffling groove and funky horn charts will stay with you for a good long time. Includes `Down at the House of Blues'; `Chicago Bound'; `Closer to You'; `Joker in the Wind'; `Uphill Peace of Mind'; `Last Train to Memphis'; `Don't Let the Rain Come Down'; `Treat a Dog; Rollin' Stone'; `Can't Help Myself'; `Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye'; `Gypsy Wind', and `Blue Suede Blues (Tribute to Carl Perkins)'. Don't miss this train!

THIS IS THE MOST SURPRISING CD I'VE HEARD IN TWO DECADES!!! Rivers runs the gauntlet from rocker to bluesman, to lover, to hurting friend. Do not miss his tribute to his friend of thirty years - Carl Perkins - author of Blue Suede Shoes and his tribute to Elvis.

This is a must have if you like music.

Banco de Gaia's long-out-of-print masterpiece runs wild with a hypnotic stream of world beat and ambient techno, successfully fusing elements of Eastern and Arabic music that would sound contrived in less talented hands. As a political statement, Last Train to Lhasa's subtle grace is an effective and eloquent way to express the tragic destruction of Tibetan culture in the face of Chinese occupation. But the strength of the listening experience will keep you coming back, regardless of your stance on the issue. The two-disc set jumps from choppy, Goa-style trance ("Kuos") to blue-room chill tunes ("China (clouds not mountains)") and the perfectly integrated chant samples of "Kincajou." Along with de Gaia's 1994 debut, Maya, Train crashed through stylistic barriers as if they didn't exist, helping pave the way for the now fashionable global techno and downtempo styles of artists like dZihan & Kamien and Gavin Hardkiss's Hawke alter ego. Kudos to Six Degrees Records for reissuing the work of this adventurous, reflective artist. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A classic that never grows old.......2007-05-13

I first heard this album after downloading it from usenet. I fell in love with it immediately and went looking for more from this artist when I discovered the album was out of print! This became a big deal some months later when I had a hard drive crash and lost all my music. Fortunately, I was able to purchase it online via emusic's fantastic "25 track" introductory deal.

As luck would have it, a year or so later I AGAIN lost my music (no, I don't keep backups because usually it can all be found again) but am delighted to find that now this album has been reissued so I can at last PURCHASE it and have the CD on my shelf (the ultimate backup).

If you like techno, trance, ambient, house, or even "new age" you won't go wrong with this album. It's a fantastic journey that plays well in the car, at work, or late at night - whether alone or with someone special.

3 out of 5 stars Dance Extravaganza.......2007-02-12

I think this style of music would be called House. It's the music you hear in a dance club. Thump thump thump thump thump for 7 minutes or so, then the thumping stops and a fluttering synthesizer swirls around long enough for you to catch your breathe and trip out for a while. Then the thumping starts again. Sort of like the 21st century version of disco. There are some interesting talking dubs here and there, and great rhythms, but nothing stands out as really creative or catchy. I wouldn't say it's bland necessarily, well maybe a little.

This is a good thing in my opinion. It's definitely not pop music, thank God. It's great in a club. It doesn't translate well to my home, though. Probably, this would be better for an ipod. If you are working out or running or dancing, this would be perfect. I don't know if it would be interesting enough for me while driving.

I would suggest downloading it from the internet rather than buying the CD. It looks like that is the way the industry is heading anyway. Who needs all those CD's stacked all over the place. Save the plastic for the take out containers and mesclun salad packaging. Maybe we should all just go digital.

I'd probably give it 3 1/2 stars, but that's not an option so it gets 3. Definitely not 4.

5 out of 5 stars A quick note.......2006-09-01

I heard a track of this CD while driving, wrote down the name and ordered it immediately from Amazon. The main track -- Last Train to Lhasa -- is a classic. I have listened to it dozens of times and it doesn't get old.

It is electronic music, which I usually do not bother with, but Banco de Gaio is compelling. They have carried the train theme throughout the track, a drumming beat that becomes insistent as the song goes on and drives the mood and excitement. The long track develops vocals and instrumentals around the train theme. It dies out slowly, as does a train fading into the distance, and leaves you wanting to begin the piece again.

5 out of 5 stars a landmark electronic music album.......2005-08-14

I absolutely adore this album. It's political without being brash (in fact, without very many words at all), it's got dance beats but it's not your standard formulaic techno, and it's got a nice variety of Eastern instruments and that worldbeat sound, but it's fresh and uncliched, and, like Paul Simon and Talking Heads and other great artists from the U.S. or the U.K. who borrowed from musical styles from elsewhere around the globe, this feels like true musical exploration rather than theft. Toby Marks is a musician, not a sample plunderer, and a whole lot in the electronic music world today (many of them on the Six Degrees label) quite possibly owe their musical existence to groundbreaking records like this one.

More important even than all of the sociopolitical ramifications of the record, the record is REALLY REALLY GOOD. It's much lighter and more delicate than what I've heard of "Maya," the album that immediately precedes this one. But this is not electromuzak, and I assure you even when it's not danceable (which is actually rather often), that it's not boring.

P.S. The mixes on the second disc are so unbelievably long that it's a little over the top. But who cares?! Disc 1 is great.

5 out of 5 stars driving through mountains while the sun is rising.......2004-02-27

I bought this in the summer of 1995 - just in time for a long drive with beautiful weather. That whole weekend I was mesmerized by the music. I still am. And whenever I get the opportunity to take a long drive, I savor putting in this cd at just the right time - when there ain't much traffic and the scenery is beautiful. . .

5 out of 5 stars soulful and danceable.......2005-11-20

Eric Brace and Last Train Home just keep getting better and better. "Bound Away" is by turns joyful, smokin', soulful, thought-provoking, and all of the above at the same time. It's the kind of music that you want to crank up when you're doing any kind of routine chore---only beware, because chances are that you'll end up grooving down in the kitchen instead of doing the dishes. At last, country music that's as original as it is unsentimental.

5 out of 5 stars I just like good songs.......2005-06-04

this is a very strong album. its an interesting mix of originals and covers, and (as usual with these guys) styles. Eric Brace has a wonderful, souful, and distinctive voice that truly makes this band click. jeff lange's incredible guitar (in particular on gravedigger blues and bound away) give this album less of blue grass/country feel than their others, but that doesnt mean its any less of a beautiful sound. one of LTH's strengths over their few albums has been selecting material from a few of the dc areas unsung, but terrific songwriters, and they do it again here. the band's cover of Karl Straub's dark and cryptic "they dance real close there" is just right -- (this song is really one finest pieces of songwriting you will ever find) ; and Kevin johnson's "marlene" that starts the album is a wonderful tune.

and the originals are excellent too; eric's "flipping quarters" is one of their best. the only critique is that absence of the strong harmonies that LTH's earlier albums featured.

5 out of 5 stars Real fun music.......2004-03-03

I found this item while looking up items about Peter (PDQ Bach) Schickele, whose instrument is the Bassoon. The selection of items reflect the current no so serious status of the unusual sound of this instrument.

5 out of 5 stars The Bassoon Brothers- Bassoon Ambassadors to the World!.......2003-12-16

Wanted- The Bassoon Brothers is hands down our entire family's favorite CD. (Our second favorite is Captured- The Bassoon Brothers.) After hearing this CD we are all bassoon enthusiasts and Bassoon Bros. devoted fans. My 11 year old, inspired by the Bassoon Brothers, is now a bassoonist with a youth symphony orchestra. The Bassoon Brothers' level of skill and musicianship is the highest, their selections are witty, their arrangements are wonderful, and the CD is a gem! The "Brothers" raise up their bassoons celebrating the instrument's solo and small ensemble capabilities, demonstrating its elegant, eloquent, and expressive voice. Great listening! Great entertainment!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2003-01-14

I played bassoon for 11 or so years. I wish I'd had an album such as this one back then; I might have kept up with it. The Bassoon Brothers are quite talented, as their recording shows, and the arrangements imaginitive and often amusing. They take a few liberties with some well-known pieces, so if you're a die-hard classical purist, this album may not be for you.

If you're a bassoonist yourself, and you're looking for a fresh sound for our instrument, I heartily recommend this album. I enjoyed it immensely. Who knew bassoons could be so cool?

5 out of 5 stars Not for stiffs!.......2001-10-25

The bassoon is usually thought of as only slightly less comical than the trombone and enjoyed mostly by those infinitely more anally retentive. Its unique sound has no pretenders. So, I love both it and this CD. In fact, I ended up with two copies, so I offered the other, gratis, to the bassoon professor at a local, very famous music college here in Tokyo. He required that I submit a written list of pieces on it, which he would then evaluate and make a decision as to whether it would merit his acceptance. Uh huh. A new twist on THAT retentive. Anyway, "Wanted" is funny, it often swings, it's sometimes gets a bit outside, it occasionally gets down with some stink on it, and it's thoroughly creative.

3 out of 5 stars Not my favourite, but..........2001-10-12

I like bassoon quartets and have a tendency to buy all bassoon quartet records I see. Luckily for my wallet I don't see that many. The Bassoon Brothers CD is not my favourite bassoon quartet recording, in fact it's my least favourite but despite that it's not that bad and some of the tracks are actually quite good.

So, what's bad? Some of the songs are played too "rough". I'm especially thinking of Gounod's Funeral March and Anderson's Buglers Holiday, which I've heard done wonderfully elsewhere. Bugler's Holiday is almost downight bad. I generally think they could have gained from a bit more polished playing style.

But some tracks are well played: Alexanders Ragtime Band has a nice thing going and Dubois' Scherzo as well. And I like the Dragoons from Carmen...

Conclusion: I won't recommend this to a person who's never heard a bassoon quartet. I'll play them United Sounds of Bassoon or the Caliban Quartet instead to get them hooked. But this CD can be worth its money too. So I give it three stars out of five.

5 out of 5 stars A whole lotta wonderful Americana!.......2006-10-28

A while ago, I ordered this Bobby Charles album from the Amazon website and was delighted from the first listening.

This 2-CD set includes no less than THIRTY-FOUR tracks and comes in a nice cardboard sleeve. The booklet includes, for each track, complete credits regarding recording studios, engineers, producers and individual musicians. The recording dates, however, are only indicated for the tracks on the first CD 1 ; why?

The sequencing is not chronological and the material on both CD's criss-crosses the years randomly, stretching from 1975 to 2001! This could have spelled disaster but it actually works very well. It is remarkable that the song quality, the vocal delivery, the overall production and the general level of musicianship are so consistently first rate from beginning to end. The listener never gets the impression that the tracks were recorded over such a long time span.

Bobby Charles wrote all tracks, except for the amazing remake of "Walkin to New Orleans" (co-written by Fats Domino, of course), which features a short but delightful vocal cameo by the Fat Man himself.

What this superb singer-songwriter offers here is roots Americana at its very best, a genuine cornucopia of American traditions filtered through a a personal vision of Crescent City Rhythm 'n' Blues.
All the material flows along satisfyingly enough, sung and performed with a relaxed confidence, a kind of musical bonhomie so laid back that it sometimes makes J. J. Cale sound positively restless in comparison! When I listen to this album, I pick one CD and play it in its entirety one, two or three times in a row. It is THAT good. So good indeed that I do not feel the need to list favourite tracks.

The lyrics have a suitably down home character while the musicianship is truly superb, quite often driven by the wonderful electric (slide) guitar from Sonny Landreth. But then again, there are so many fine musicians contributing that it is not possible to list them. I will mention some guest spots from, among others: Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Ben Keith, Dan Penn, Maria Muldaur, etc.

Now to a "statistical" aside: out of the 19 tracks included on CD 2, nine were previously released on the "Wish You Were Here Tonight" CD released in 1995 (the omitted tracks are: "Promises, Promises", "The Mardi-Gras Song" and "Peanut".) Another ten tracks were previously released on the "Secrets of The Heart" CD released in 1998 (the omitted tracks are: "You" and "Happy Birthday Fats Domino".)

Merci pour ce délice, Monsieur Guidry!

5 out of 5 stars A lotta more wonderful Americana than you might think!.......2006-10-28

A while ago, I ordered this Bobby Charles album from the Amazon website and was delighted from the first listening.

In the first place, I would like to point out that this is a 2-CD set. The first CD includes the fifteen tracks actually listed by Amazon.com. They are "new" (that is: previously unreleased). The "bonus" second CD includes 19 tracks previously released on two Stony Plain CDs ("Wish You Were Here Tonight" from 1995 and "Secrets of The Heart" (1998.) It would take too much place to list them all. Overall, THIRTY-FOUR tracks are included on this UK album.

The booklet includes, for each track, complete credits regarding the recording studios, engineers, producers and individual musicians. The recording dates, however, are only indicated for the tracks on the first CD (why?)

5 out of 5 stars Bobby's Back!.......2005-09-11

Bobby Charles is a long time resident of New Orleans, and as far as I know, he has not been heard from since the hurricane. But that would not be unusual for him - he's a bit of a recluse and he could be just fine, and let's all hope so. Charles recently released a CD called "Last Train to Memphis." The title track was "covered" by the Band on "Jubilation," though the Band's version was released in 1998, and had additional lyrics contributed by Levon Helm et al. But Charles' version was recorded in 1998, so only a few know who's covering whom. The lyrics here are back to basics, but the playing is not - it is super, and so it goes into the next, and next, and all of the tracks. All of them are superb with a heavy dose of Sonny Landeth's slide guitar that drives many of the songs. Other contributors include Geoff Muldar, Pat Breaux, Rufus Thibodeaux, Wardell Quezergue, Fred Carter Jr., Ben Keith, the late Kenny Buttrey, Willie Nelson, Clarence "Frogman" Henry, and lots of others. Recording dates go back to 1980, but there's a consistency that carries throughout - Bobby Charles' laid back cajun style. Among the many highlights are the fiddle of Rufus Thibodeaux on "The Legend of Jolie Blonde." He weaves in and out of the melody in an infectious way - its magical. Possibly the most rousing track is "I Spent All My Money Loving You." Fine electric slide guitar from Sonny Landreth is complemented by equally fine piano from George Bitzer.

The CD comes with a bonus disc with cuts that appear to be mostly from the two most recent past releases, but I have not had a chance to see if there is anything new on this one. Its been on the CD player once, but most of the time I'm spinning "Last Train to Memphis" and hoping its not the last release from Bobby.

Bobby Charles`s eponymous first album was one of the well-kept secrets of rock, and he is, by his own admission, a reclusive, un-starry man.
This is a more than welcome double album that has great packaging, looks and feels good to own, has guest spots from, among others, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Maria Muldaur (now there`s an underrated singer; check out her early solo albums) and - whoop! - the great Fats Domino (who of course recorded Charles`s immortal `Walking to New Orleans` way back when) - and the whole thing SOUNDS GREAT too!
Buy this, please.
