God save the Kinks.......2005-01-08

The Kinks were one of the most criminally underrated bands in the history of rock and roll. Part of the problem in the United States was that much of the band's music focused on traditional English themes and could be seen as conservative during their greatest period, the late 60's and early 70's. Most of the rock bands of the era were promoting revolution, while the Kinks longed for a return to the village green of yore. Also, The Kinks were banned from performing live in the United States due to a dispute with the musician's union.

This collection of ten EP's put out by the band covers their most productive period of 1964-74, before Ray Davies decided to start writing music hall operas (but that's another story.) Blasting off with the quintessential garage anthem "Louie Louie" the band sets the tone for their raucous early recordings. Their most well known work follows "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night" and the ominous "Sunny Afternoon" put The Kinks at the forefront of the British invasion on both sides of the Atlantic.

Then The Kinks became more album oriented and singles became less a part of the band's overall concept. Which isn't to say that the band couldn't spin off an amazing stand alone song. "Waterloo Sunset" which is found on this collection and also as the final track on the Something Else album has competition only from R.E.M.'s "Nightswimmng" as the most beautiful pop song ever written (ahem... Todd and Matthew.) Also from the same album is "David Watts" a blasting up-tempo send up of the beautiful people in a high school setting.

For those who have most of the records from this period, there are some obscurities that can make this collection attractive, non-album tracks like "Milk Cow Blues" and "Gotta Get the First Plane Home." This is an excellent supplement to the overview records Greatest Hits and The Kink Kronikles both of which have been released on Reprise.

Fun.......2003-01-02

This is a very young Lulu, before "To Sir with Love", so one can feel that she is having more fun with this material (and singing off key a bit in the process.)
The cd shows that Lulu was already a fine singer. Especially since "You'll never leave her" is a classic in my book and should be on any upcoming best of cd. "Chocolate Ice" and "Surprise, Surprise" also are great car songs.

Fine collection of Kinks EPs a little light on rarities.......2000-11-07

Outside of Elvis, The Stones, The Who and the Beatles the Kinks have been repackaged more often than most 60's bands. This has lead to a lot of confusion for fans as to true rarities (such as the yet to reissued Great Lost Kinks Album) vs stuff that is readily available elsewhere.

This boxset of the Kinks EPs is no exception to that confusion. Only one track (She's Got Everything) from this set was missing from the import remasters issued by Castle/Essential Music a couple of years ago. So the big question is if this is worthwhile for the average fan to pick up? Probably not despite the 5 star ranking. It's a great collection with cardbox replicas of a number of rare Kinks EPs. Since this is a limited edition pressing it will probably appeal to long time fans and collectors the most.

A 5-STAR TALENT IN A 3-STAR PRESENTATION.......2000-10-13

This 10-CD set represents all the 4-track EPs Clark issued in the U.K. between 1964-1968, replicated right down to the original artwork. While die-hard fans who must have everything may want to include this in their collections, those looking for a compilation of Clark's greatest hits can do far better elsewhere. First of all, the 40 tracks here were remastered from the original monaural tapes, whereas most of them are available in stereo on other CDs. Secondly, in keeping with presenting these EPs exactly as they were originally produced, some of the tracks are repeated. And finally, with only 4 tracks per CD, those with players with single-CD only capability need to be prepared to change the disc every 13 minutes or so. While much of the material herein showcases Clark at her finest, it can be heard - with far better sound quality - on a number of other releases considerably less expensive than this.

Perfect Troggs Collection.......2004-04-05

Although they never reached the status of many of their peers, The Troggs were (and still are) one of the UK's great 60s pop groups-'pop' being the operative word. Their repertoire might have been limited, their playing might have been a little-uh-basic at times and god knows they did wear those tacky striped suits. More than a few of their numbers were definitely on the pop-cheesy side. But 'Wild Thing'-with it's classic ocarina solo? The Troggs are redeemed. This collection contains that garage classic and many others, some in glorious mono and sounding great, all done with gusto, taken from the original French EPs: With A Girl Like You (better than Wild Thing in my book: terrific 3-chord power pop with Reg Presley's nasal ba-ba-bas adding a cool vocal signature they would use on other songs), I Can't Control Myself (more lustful teen lyrics-another Troggs trademark), Night Of The Long Grass (surprisingly tough guitar riff with even MORE lustful teen lyrics), Give It To Me, Girl in Black (a little known rocker any retro band would give their left nut to write) and more. One or two numbers even showcase the boys' working class humor, such as the hard-to-find 'Yella In Me'. Skip past the lame, emasculated, over-produced pop crap on this disc (there's a few but it won't be hard to tell which ones they are) and secretly enjoy the syrupy 'Love Is All Around' with it's classic 1967 ultra-commercial summer-of-love sound and turn up the volume on the many straight-ahead, determined pop-rockers that gave this band their longevity despite their narrow pop image.

I first got this album expecting the usual from korn, but then I listened to it. I couldn't believe it! This is quite possibly as awesome as their first album. A definite recommendation to all who even remotely like korn. If you are a true Korn Fan its a must have!!!
