Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Fabulous A-Side, awful b-sides.......2006-01-29

It really pains me to give such a fantastic band three stars. The song "Blue Orchid" is just great. It's guitars and fascinating lyrics are captivating. But the b-sides could have been done better.

"Who's A Big Baby" is appaling. When I bought the single (before the album came out), I was kinda afraid that the album might not be that good. Thankfully, the album was great, but this song is really terrible.

"Though I Hear You Calling" is only OK. It's a hell of a lot better than Who's A Big Baby. It has an interesting riff, and was a relief after Who's A Big Baby.

The live version of "You've Got Her In Your Pocket" is great.

Overall, this is not worth your money. Spend your money on the singles that came afterwards, "My Doorbell" and "The Denial Twist". Those singles are excellent, but not Blue Orchid.

5 out of 5 stars Wierd Stuff but Really Cool Stuff.......2006-01-17

This Single kicks @ss buy it and shut up "Who's a Big Baby" rules and Meg sounds so cute singing it.

4 out of 5 stars Another great addition.......2005-12-19

It just keeps getting better. Even when repackaging their hits the Stripes continue to surprise and impress. The two new songs ("Baby" and "Calling") won't be everyone's favorite but they continue to showcase the Stripes confidence, talent, and ability to translate all kinds of musical types into something new and appealing.

5 out of 5 stars The White Stripes Rock!!.......2005-12-13

I have two favorites on this CD: and thats Blue Orchid and Who's a Big Baby? Blue Orchid rocked and gave it a new meaning, and Who's a Big Baby is a great cheer-up song if you ever need one. the other two im not so sure about but those two definitely rocked

4 out of 5 stars Interesting if not always great.......2005-11-23

Well, this is certainly one that's quite an interesting listen. Not really essential or anything, but it's worth hearing at least once. This more than signals them defying themselves from the "garage-rock" pigeonhole. Instead, they do things that can't even be described. Except that the two amazing songs here are the ones that have forms done somewhere else. The live "You've Got Her in Your Pocket" is excellent and just as tender as it was before. "Blue Orchid", the title track, is a great track which shows Jack in an interesting falsetto and almost robotic-like instrumentation. But Meg's drumming reminds you that it's the White Stripes.

The other two tracks exist, and I prefer one to the other. "Though I Hear You Calling..." is a great song as far as the lyrical department goes and was understandably left off, but if you have an open mind, it's worth checking out. However, it's "Who's a Big Baby" that's just a plain head-scratcher. It doesn't sound anything like the White Stripes, heck that doesn't even sound like Meg! It is a single which shows the growth of the band in its B-sides even better than "Get Behind Me Satan" itself. However, that is a more consistently good batch of songs. This single is worth checking out for the casual fan, though.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Collection to Date!.......2005-12-11

This CD is the most complete collection to date, for it includes the best tracks from ALL Yma Sumac albums, INCLUDING her terribly rare pre- America album, recorded in Argentina in 1943. It is fascinating to hear her vocal improvements as she grew into a mature woman. In the liner notes are rare photos (only ever seen on her official site, www.yma-sumac.com (don't forget the hyphen!). This is a TWO CD set, with beautifully remastered sound. For the die-hard fans, this is a must. For the new fans, this is a glorious and thorough introduction into the magical world of Yma Sumac.

    2 out of 5 stars Be Weary!.......2005-06-11

First, if you're in the States, seek out the domestic version of the single it has the two tracks from this disc plus another Jack number. Here's my thoughts on the songs included on this version (from a review I sent to a friend of mine):

"Who's A Big Baby?" - I was geeked b/c I figured, I'd now have a proper Meg track to makeup for the creepy, brief "Passive Manipulation" (from the new album). This was not to be. The track is a B-side to the new album in every sense, read this as: Weird, unexpected and featuring a marimba. Meg's "vocals" are digitized and creepy. They "lyrics" seem to chiefly consist of "Who's a big baby?", "Waaahhh!!!", and "I want my Mommy!" Utter bollocks. I'm shuddering as I listen to it.

"You've Got Her In Your Pocket (Live)" Northern Ireland August 25th, 2004 - The live version of Pocket is wonderful and a very welcome breath of fresh air after all that Satan experimentation! Jack does a great job playing this one live.

Great CD. If you haven't heard Dave Camp's CDs yet, you should. He is a terrific musician and composer. His style is smooth jazz and I personally think his music is some of the best in this genre.

4 out of 5 stars Glad I Found This One.......2004-01-30

I had heard the title cut and "Your Eyes" from this cd a few years ago and I really liked them. Being hard to come by I was forced to buy the cd used and am I glad I did. Dave plays tenor and soprano sax as well as the flute and is joined on most songs by Peter White. On "Your Eyes" Dave plays the flute with Peter White on guitar. This one is excellent. The second track "Nightfall" features tenor sax, flute, guitar and keyboards and is equally as good. The next great track is track 6 "Losing You" and features tenor sax. Finally the last one that I really enjoy alot is track 10 "Party of Two" , which features the flute. While this one is only available used today, these songs make this cd a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars The Three Sounds, Black Orchid.......2005-03-15

There weren't that many "groups" that recorded for Blue Note. Most of the dates were just some of the best musicians in New York doing standards and originals on the spot, for one night only, until the next session.

However, The Three Sounds were one group that frequently went into Rudy Van Gelder's studio to record great music. This particular date, "Black Orchid," is probaly their most famous date.

This album captures them in some of their most inspiring settings. From the opening note, you are sure this is going to be a neat little session.

Tunes such as the Black Orchid, are so fresh and unique. The bossa nova influence is so perfect for the song. From the up-beat songs Tadd's Delight, and Nature Boy, the album is a bright masterpiece.

The Three Sounds are such a unique trio. Though highly underrated, the group recorded so many albums for Blue Note, though many are hard to find. Gene Harris, Anthony Simpkins & Bill Dowdy are all the perfect match, for this great little swinging combo, called The Three Sounds.

5 out of 5 stars The Three Sounds!!!.......2005-01-23
