Album Description
This fourth full-length solo release by Fred Gillen Jr. was written, performed(all instruments played by,) produced, arranged, and engineered by Mr. Gillen in his "Sweatbox" 8-track studio in Peekskill, New York. For this release Gillen set out to not only showcase the quality songs and stunningly soulfull voice his fans have come to expect, but also to make a work which had the permanence of the records he grew up loving by artists like The Beatles, The Stones, or Led Zeppelin. He set out to make something which would be listened to over and over again; a CD so infectious its listeners would have to carry it with them when they left home, just in case they "needed" to hear it. He succeeded! This CD is addictive not only because of its amazing songs, but also because of its little details and quirks. This CD has a complex and endearing personality which draws the listener in and keeps him or her in. With 16 songs, it is Gillen's longest release to date, and includes such live show staples as "Plane Shot Down In A War" and "F*** You Goodbye." Buy it and listen to it enough so the cover gets torn and frayed and your mind anticipates the next song. It is that kind of CD.
Customer Reviews:
This Guy Rocks.......2007-06-06
I don't know the album but I know the guy; he absolutely rocks, and I'm not just saying that because I was afraid of him in high school.
Is it true The Front are getting back together?
radioactive water has its merits.......2001-05-18
Talk about angst, having been born and raised just a pig hair's length away from Westchester's most notorious Ground Zero Party Space, Fred Gillen knows how to express himself! I once overheard Fred, at a party in the kitchen at Gallaghers, say..."yeah, the cool quarry water mixed with the warm flow of the cooling waters from the power plant to create a fine swimming environment...." That's when I knew Fred was for real...
A Tri-Village Area Treat.......2001-03-28
Fred Gillen is clearly the most significant artist to come out of Verplanck and perhaps the entire Tri-Village area. If you are looking for a change of pace from the overhype of the "Montrose" scene, then you are in for a rare treat!
I Guess I Just Love the Sound of Nervous Laughter :).......2000-10-25
There's not a lot of new music available these days that has the sense of urgency that marks most of the songs on this intense CD. I suppose the best way to describe this is simply as music that not only makes me feel good, but also makes me feel good about getting up and going out and doing something for somebody else. I know that sounds like a pretty tall order for a collection of folk songs, but these really do go that deep. In one song, Gillen sings "And the night lost its danger and the stars showed their faces, the cars on the avenue became lights on a Christmas tree..." and the phrase aptly describes how I feel each time I listen to this amazing disc. With each spin the world seems a little bit new again, as raw as the bristling youth of tunes like "4 Cold Nails" and "Plane Shot Down in a War" and the brave, knowing hope of the gorgeous, multi-layered "Parking Lot Jesus" and "One Good Eye." From every direction, in words and in music, "Nervous Laughter" sounds like something big knocking at the door, and the dangers of not answering are far greater than the challenge of opening up. It's writing and playing on a whole different level from what we've become accustomed to hearing, and worth every exhilarating second.
Gillen Gets Personal.......2000-04-27
Perhaps, after listening to his critically acclaimed third cd, "Tales of the Misplaced," you thought you knew what it was that made Fred Gillen Jr. tick. Think again. Fred is back with his long awaited fourth release, "Nervous Laughter," and this time, it's personal. Stick it in. Press play..."I don't know if I wanna be true/I don't know if I dare untrue/I don't know anything anymore/But I do know there must be much much more than this waitin' and dyin' inside..." Hold on tight. It's gonna be a bumpy ride. Unlike his previous records which are wonderful examinations of the world and its complicated relationships, in "Nervous Laugher," Gillen turns the magnifying glass on himself. What he's found is brilliant. Pensive, detailed, and sometimes harsh self discoveries layered with rock hard grooves show us a whole new side to Fred. A side even Neil Young would be proud of. And for those of you purests, don't fret, you'll still get your fill of his soulful social comentary. Songs like "Parking Lot Jesus," and "Larger Then Life" will satisfy that crave, but for those of you who need a little rock with your roll there's "Four Cold Nails," and "F*** You." Explicit lyrics? Yes. And as Dan Bern would say, "...maybe than way [you'll] wake up for a second."
