keep on rockin..........2005-12-29
i remember when pearl jam played state college in 93[?]with the red hot chili peppers. grunge exploded, and pearl jam was leading the way. eddy and the band rocked; it was raw and mad and wonderful.
listening to the three-disc set i realize how times change; there was no war then, and there were few reasons to be raw and mad but pearl jam was just because. and some things do not change. pearl jam is still raw and mad and wonderful.
the tale of the time is captured, along with the big sound pearl jam is known for. the porch, fortunate son, keep on rocking, yellow ledbetter sequence is worth the cost alone.
i recommend 05.03.03 highly.
Pretty darn good.......2005-11-04
I've listened to many many many Pearl Jam concerts and this one is great. Though I'm not a big fan of Eddie's voice that night (though I am a big fan almost any other night), there are many memorable rarities such as "Release" and "Leaving Here".
With so many tracks, you're at least getting your money's worth.
Just keeps going and going and going..........2005-06-02
Ok, so I'm not the world's greatest Pearl Jam fan, but their records do spend a decent amount of time in my CD player. I got this CD because I had never heard them live, and kept hearing that any live recording was more than worth it. This one got strong reviews, had an enormous set list, so seemed like a good deal.
It is a great deal, but man this concert never ends. It starts off great, the sound quality is superb, but how many endless guitar solos do I have to listen to? There's something like 30 songs on this CD, and you REALLY feel it by the end. Every time I listen to it, I just start drifting out in the middle of the second disc. The short acoustic break is kind of not much at all, and the concert fizzles a bit after that, and gets quite repetitive.
I think this is very good overall, but only hardcore PJ fans will have the stamina to give this record their full attention. For the rest of us mortals, it is a good buy, but you'll probably end up listening to it in bits and pieces over a few months. Still a good CD to rock out to, and for the record, PJ do sound amazing live.
Pearl jam in state college!.......2005-02-24
Magical Nite! I was there! .. I was alive, spell bound, and over my head with the joy!
I know they are among the very best! But for those 4 hours .. they were number one!
One evening of my life I cannot top it, ever! Buy this!
The band's last great show?.......2004-11-08
Starting with their landmark Soldier Field show in 1995, I've been collecting live recordings from Pearl Jam. From that perspective, I've heard most of their songs performed a number of times, and State College does not provide a whole lot of 'definitive' live performances.
That said, this is a study in stamina and dedication, as well as professionalism. The best live band of this generation, playing the last show of the first leg of their tour, and they just don't want to leave. Maybe it's that they've learned to 'pace themselves' properly, maybe it's a renewed love for the music- whatever it is, you get 36 songs over 3 discs, and they plow through each of them with the passion and energy that they deserve. You get some things you don't get on other bootlegs on this one, such as a memorable, supposedly improvised, intro to Rearviewmirror. If you're a casual fan, you get practically all the hits on this one too. The performance of "Black" is particularly mindblowing, with the best Mike McCready solo I've ever heard. "Betterman" is also extended, with the "Save it for Later" tag.
Out of a collection of roughly 20 Pearl Jam bootlegs, this one's easily top 5. A great value for the money.

Great singing.......2006-03-01
Roberta Alexander is stunning in these songs of Bernstein. Her voice simply shimmers. Really beautiful.
Only Roberta.......2003-12-02
Roberta Alexander is right on top of this recording. She has a beautiful and strong voice, but more importantly, she has perfect command of the music and idiom of these and Ives' songs. The emotional range of the songs is very wide, ranging from playful to thoughtful to sorrowful but she makes all of them sound very natural.
The Five Kid Songs express the imagination of a small child (Jupiter has seven moons, or is it nine? Saturn has a million billion trillion sixty-nine) and it would be very easy to perform them in a childish way, talking down as many adults do - the composer expressly stated that they should not be performed this way and in fact Alexander sings them with a perfectly natural innocence. La Bonne Cuisine is sung with a strong drive, and although it's hard to imagine what anyone should do with excerpts from a cooking book it's still compelling music. The other songs are also nice but not as memorable - as for the songs from Candide, they are beautiful but get the complete recording on Deutsche Grammophon, directed by Bernstein himself (there are two; I prefer the live version, ASIN B000001GD2).
Tan Crone does more than just provide a background; she adds her own interpretation on piano to add even more feeling to the music.
Bernstein's songs do not have the depth of Ives', but this is still a very nice collection. I will have to check out the Barber and Copland recordings on the same label as well.

For those Sarah Brightman fans who didn't spring for The Songs That Got Away when it was a pricey import, this domestic release will be a must-buy. Originally recorded in 1989 shortly after she achieved international fame in The Phantom of the Opera, the album spotlights obscure American and British musical theater songs that either were removed from shows or were "lost" when the shows themselves slipped out of the repertoire. (Of course, some of the songs aren't nearly as obscure as they were in 1989--the opening track, Stephen Schwartz's soaring "Meadowlark," has since been claimed by Liz Callaway, Patti LuPone, and Betty Buckley, while Stephen Sondheim's "I Remember"--well suited to Brightman's glasslike tones--is now recognized as one of his most gorgeous and haunting compositions.) Brightman performs well on this diverse collection of entertaining and often lovely songs, including an early draft of Frank Loesser's "Fugue for Tinhorns," here sung as a triple-tracked, lilting waltz, and the Puccini aria "Chi il bel sogno di doretta," which foreshadows her later, more ambitious crossover projects. There's also a tune from Jeeves by then-husband Andrew Lloyd Webber, who produced this album not long before he and Brightman divorced in 1990. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
For Fans of Broadway (Sondheim, Hamlisch & Bernstein e.g.):.......2007-02-24
This is an interesting and surprising production that showcases the vocal prowess of Sara Brightman. It is not however, representative of the new and highly overproduced vocal productions that constitute her newer recordings. Although this production really allows the listener to hear a very melodic and unencumbered vocal performance, as it is pleasing in it's simplicity, yet meant for the more discriminating listener. Fans of Irving Berlin, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and Richard Rodgers will feel right at home here. For those seeking another major sonic production as in Eden, La Luna, Dive, or The Harem Tour this is not it! My criticism is not of her vocal prowess or production values but the apparently endless array of previously released material offered as a new and different recording. But I suppose that this is rather due to the greedy objectives of of A&M Records just trying to go to the bank, often and laden heavy with dollars. Nothing that any label wouldn't try to do. My advice with Sara Brightman is "caveat emptor" (buyer beware) check the disc carefully for redundancy of tracks within her discography. If you're a fan of this genre of music, you will probably respond quite well to this recording.
The songs that didn't get away.......2004-02-12
This is one of my favorite albums by Sarah. She surprised me with her ability to go from light opera to jazz. Here we don't find the over-produced albums such as Harem, just a superbly trained voice. No little girl breathy tunes here, just solid performances. This is the Sarah Brightman that I like to remember and enjoy. If you see this album and you're a Sarah Brightman fan, pick it up and treasure it. I'd like to see her do more of thisgenre, where she showcases her voice. Who ever thinks that Sarah has a small voice will be convinced otherwise by this album.
Songs that showcase Sarah's theatrical gifts.......2003-12-11
Before experimental albums like Dive and Fly, as well as the ones where her classically-trained voice enchanted millions, Sarah Brightman did a collection of musical and theatrical songs originally released in 1989, but reissued when she made it big with Time To Say Goodbye. Her vocal style leans towards the theatrical Broadway side, but more mellowed. But on songs like the strings-laden mid-tempo "Meadowlark" from Stephen Schwartz's The Baker's Wife, the way she would later do splendidly interpret Lloyd Webber's songs is in the making. Here are other highlights, including those that were reissued on Sarah's Encore album (2002).
Stephen Sondheim's "I Remember" is a sad ballad told from the POV of a window mannequin remembering the sights it has experienced throughout the seasons, but the memories are now hazy and at the end, it sings, "At times I think/I would gladly die/for a day of sky."
Some songs like "Lud's Wedding" from Bernstein's failed bicentennial musical, only seem to work due to Sarah's voice. Ditto for the simple "Three-Cornered Tune." Consisting of three verses, each repeated twice. However, Irving Berlin's "Mr. Monotony", a tune understandably cut from Easter Parade, is not a particularly inspiring song.
Marvin Hamlisch's "Dreamers" is one of my favourites here, as I have affinity to it, and I'm sure Sarah is one at heart as well. "Only dreamers have wings with which to fly far away", as in their own fantasies, but unfortunately, "sometimes dreamers are forced to leave their dreams far away", i.e. the harshness of reality. However, it paints them in a positive light and states that everyone needs to have some sort of dream "to take time to find treasures and mountains we can climb."
"Silent Heart" really showcases Sarah's voices, on how some things the heart is best left silent, as in things that really thrill it. "If I Ever Fall In Love Again" is taken from The Crooked Mile and is a nice love song Sarah really wraps herself in.
"Chi Il Bel Sogno Di Doretta" from Puccini's La Rondine is a great showcase of the operatic voice that would come into full bloom on Time To Say Goodbye. This song would be reissued on Encore.
"Away From You" by Richard Rodgers, and taken from a musical biog of Henry VIII (!!!). "The clocks are frozen and time's a traveler who's lost his way" is one of the sentiments Sarah conveys effectively. Also reissued on Encore.
"If love were all, I should be lonely" sings Sarah from Noel Coward's Bittersweet, "If Love Were All" was the one song that stood out for me when I first heard this CD. The ability of a talent to amuse is seen as a solid standing for mental security. A definite standout here.
From Lloyd Webber's Jeeves, the lush strings of "Half A Moment" features the vocal stylings familiar enough to those who have Sarah's Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection. It focuses on how important the capture of a moment to bright up a future rainy day is. Also reissued on Encore.
Initially, I dismissed this as the songs that should've stayed away. Although they lack the magical punch of Time To Say Goodbye or La Luna, it's still a worthwhile collection, because Sarah's clear birdlike theatrical/musicals voice makes it all worthwhile.
Good, for Sarah Brightman.......2003-08-25
Some people just love Sarah's voice, but I don't see what's so special about it. She sings in two sorts of ways, the first one is lovely, simple, forgetable, and the other sounds like Stitch with a high voice. This CD does her justice, though. A lot of the tunes are catchy and nice (how she sings them could be better) but the one I really like is "Three cornered tune." Now that's a good song! She does not have a particularly bad voice, but nothing interesting - that's for sure. And when she tries to act in her music she sounds even worse! But that's alright. After all, everyone has a different style. A highlight of this CD includes "Mr. Monotony," which, unfortunatly, did not come with lyrics in the CD case. Too bad, because its a great song. At the end of this record, though, she writes about these songs and - wow! It is amazing how many shows that song was taken out of! At one point it said it had Judy Garland singing it, and when I try to imagine her doing it I know that must have been awesome. I really want to hear Judy Garland singing this song sometime. Maybe I'll find it here on Amazon... But anyway, back to Sarah Brightman. The only other thing I can think of to say at the moment is that from what I've heard of her records, this is as good as it gets. And also, the track titled "Dreamers" is nice. I like the tune and she doesn't sing it too bad, either. It would be a good song to be played at a graduation. Only after a while the sound of it gets a little creepy and annoying. And its sticky, too. "Silent heart" is a classic, though she shouldn't sing it twice. For you see, she sings it, and then you think, "Ah, that's a sweet song. Wonderful words, soft tune," and the music gets at a great stoping point and then comes back for an encore (as one of Sarah's other records is titled). And then we have to listen to it all over again - and its not as good the second time. So overall is it good? Yes, it is. Though perhaps not good enough.
Pleasant, but not up to standard.......2003-06-22
I love Sarah Brightman's singing and her musical style as presented on Eden and La Luna. This CD is completely different in style from those two. I find it enjoyable, but it is not my favorite. Her singing is nothing special on this CD, it doesn't display her vocal range or talent in the way that her other CDs do, especially her CD "Surrender", her vocals are absolutely stunning on that CD.

This program seems designed primarily to display soprano Sumi Jo's fabulous singing and famous stylistic eclecticism. However, it also exhibits an admirable religious inclusiveness, encompassing expressions of faith from the Latin liturgy to Negro spirituals; there is even a Richard Strauss song that is essentially a paean to love. An incongruous note is struck by a nun's song from an operetta by Benatzky that is a corny Viennese waltz and by a soundtracklike arrangement of a 16th-century Ave Maria. Ranging from Mozart to Broadway, this musical mix is held together by Sumi Jo's ravishingly beautiful, pure, warm voice and the way she can color and inflect it, and by her mastery of every style (though not every language; her German in particular is unintelligible). Her intonation is impeccable, her breath control incredible. Jo's top notes soar triumphantly, and she can sustain them indefinitely, with enough power left to make a crescendo at the end. Highlights include Ravel's "Kaddisch," which sends shivers down the spine; arias from operas by Rossini and Donizetti; and arias from sacred works by Gounod and Fauré. Of two spirituals, the second one is simpler and more convincing. The accompanying forces are excellent; James Conlon doubles as pianist when not conducting. Susan Graham also makes an appearance in the moving invocation "Take Care of This House" from Bernstein's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Nice Voice.......2007-05-06
Sumi Jo has a beautiful voice but her renditions of Motherless Child and Amazing Grace were not impressive at all. The vibrato was too uncontrollable. The Ave Maria was so,so. I did not hear the richeness others have declared in their assesments. Don't get me wrong, the instrument is quite beautiful but only in some selected selections.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-17
"Music and poetry emerge from man's desire to give thanks, to praise and to pray to his gods. One of the magical powers of the human voice is that it can fly, on the wings of songs (a la Mendelssohn) to heaven and appear to be in direct communication with God." Therefore, it is no surprise that prayer is omnipresent throughout the history of music. Sumi Jo has chosen an excellent representation of songs including most styles and periods which include : Baroque (Caccini)-Classical (Mozart)-Contemporary (Preisner)-Romantic Opera (Rossini,Donizetti)-German 'Singspiel'(Schubert)-Lieder (Richard Strauss)-French church music (Gounod ,Faure)-traditional music (spiritual)-Jewish melodies (Ravel)-Viennese operetta (Johann Strauss) and the American musical (Bernstein).
Sumi Jo, born in Korea,is a much sought after coloratura soprano, having triumphed on stage, and in recitals all over the world. Not being fond of coloraturas, I make an exception for her voice, because of its depth along with the very high register. She shows a great deal of sensitivity to all of her varied selections on this disc, and each delivery is a 'gem' unto itself.
I must personally comment on those works that I particularly enjoy. Hearing her sing Mozart's 'Laudate Dominum' was a real treat; it doesn't matter how often one hears that lovely piece, just like all of his music, it 'wears' well. The 'Pie Jesu' was absolutely stunning as Sumi Jo sang it, and it is a pleasure for me to hear the selection from "GIGI" by Lerner & Loewe; not being a great broadway fan, I have always liked that specific musical. I think because it was well-done when I saw it years and years ago.
This disc is abolutely totally enjoyable. There is something for all musical tastes, and the conductor/pianist James Conlon does a great job pulling it together!!!!!
Sumi Jo- coloratura supreme.......2006-04-09
One word: Lacrimosa. It haunts you and will stay with you long after you hear it. I actually forced several if my coworkers to listen to it many of which are not opera fans and even they could not argue the beauty of it. One of my coworkers was actual on the verge of tears by the end of the song.
The rest of the album is enchanting as well as breath taking. I am a harsh critic when it comes to singers so I do not give those compliments very often, nor am I easily moved by singers but Sumi Jo has certainly done that with this album.
My only complaint is that I would have liked to hear her take of "Ave Maria" by Schubert which, while recorded many times over, would complimented her voice perfectly due to it's simplicity. "Sing low sweet chariot" would have been another great one to hear but as far as spirtuals are concerned I was very happy with her acepella version of "Amazing Grace." I was never a huge fan of "Amazing Grace" since it's been done a thousand times over but she brought such seetness and emotion to it. Of course I am kind of biased becuase I offically hate the "belting" version of this song and that's how it's usually done. It's nice to hear a simple, straight forward version.
My last comment is that it's nice to hear Sumi Jo sing less operatic pieces considering most opera singers are rarely bold enough to sing anything other than classical pieces, excluding Renee Fleming of recent.
Prayerful and beautiful.......2005-11-14
It is a refreshing change to have a collection of arias on a CD with a title that actually bears some relevance to the contents. This is indeed a prayerful collection. That means, of course, that you have to be in the appropriately contemplative mood in order to appreciate it.
Another nice change is that the orchestral accompaniment enhances the singing rather than just tagging along as an afterthought, which often seems to be the case. It is fitting that James Conlon gets equal billing here. This is splendid singing to splendid music.
Sumi Jo is comfortable in any language and in a broad range of styles. I was uncertain how she would tackle songs like Amazing Grace and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. I need not have worried. In the latter she reveals a soulfulness that fits the lyrics perfectly.
The only track not worthy of this collection is Bernstein's Take Care of This House. I suppose, as it is a prayer, it was an obvious song to include, and Jo sings it very well, but it is just a very poor song. That still leaves 14 excellent tracks that, if you are a lover of good singing, you will want in your collection.
A spectalce of voice and vocalization.......2004-12-29
I bought this used from an Amazon.com dealer and it came with a cutout on the left side of the CD box. Can this specacular CD possibly have gone out of print by Christmas 2004? If so we have lost one of the benchmark recordings of this splendid artist.
Never is there a weak moment in this incredibly beautiful collection of classical bleeding chunks and spirituals. I don't think you'll confuse Sumi for your favorite spiritual singer in "Amazing Grace" and "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child" but she is magnificent singing the complete and incomplete tunes elsewhere on the CD by famous classical composers including Mozart, Richard Strauss, Rossini, Schubert and Donizetti, to name some of them.
She is in wonderful voice and fresh-faced for the Loewe-Lerner "Say a prayer for me tonight" and does an equally nice job with Susan Graham accompanying Leonard Bernstein's "Take care of this house" from "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue". I'm not much for this kind of music -- I bought this exclusively for her rendition of Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" -- but it adds a dimension to the concert that brings it into the realm of popular Broadway tunes.
This is a wonderful concert of familiar and not so familiar songs from a singer whose voice is eloquent, beautiful and rich, with significant range and span from PPP to FFF. Sumi Jo controls her voice well throughout the concert, giving everyone something to think about regardelss of musical preference. This might have been improved if she'd included a Beatles tune -- maybe "Elenor Rigby" or "Yesterday" -- accompanied by the orchestra and James Conlon's direction. But it stands with any similar collection by any singer as it is.

There is a resurgence of interest in Leonard Bernstein the composer these days. This disc helps to readdress the hegemony of West Side Story, a piece that has tended to eclipse his remaining output. Bernstein prepared A White House Cantata as a concert version of the musical that was written in collaboration with Alan Jay Lerner, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The cantata presents scenes that are centered on the White House, and simultaneously explores racial issues, in an engaging and often witty (sometimes hilarious) way. DG has assembled an all-star cast: Thomas Hampson is the perfect choice for the President, his voice deep and authoritative. The production is blessed also with the excellent chorus London Voices; the LSO under Kent Nagano is in top form. Special mention should go also to 15-year-old Victor Acquah, who is quite superb in "If I Was a Dove." Bernstein's musical voice is archetypically American, and his country of origin is immediately apparent in the nostalgic prelude. His send-up of perceived Englishness is deliciously witty, but it is when Bernstein is in inspirational mode that he is most successful. --Colin Clarke

The best musical theatre score of the 1970's.......2005-07-04
Do yourself a favor and listen to one of the most complex theatre scores ever written. With lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Leonard Bernstein, this cd will haunt you for the rest of your life. I was an actor living in New York when this show opened; however, I was on the road in "Jesus Christ Superstar" and didn't get to see any of its few performances. From the things I have read about the production, "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" suffered from lack of cohesiveness and too much control for Bernstein and Lerner. It went through two directors who didn't have a great track record then or now. If only Jerome Robbins hadn't deserted Broadway for the ballet world, who knows what this rich score would have harvested? All we have now is this cd and alas it is not complete.
In this lamentable conservative era, some brave Broadway producer should hire Joe Mantello to direct and Kristen Chenoweth, Brian Stoke Mitchell, Billy Porter and Audra MacDonald to star. Broadway would have the artistic shot in the arm it so desparately needs.
Haunting, forgotten score........2001-05-23
"A White House Cantata" is a vitally important piece of work. It is the only document we have of one of Broadway's most legendary flops (rivalled only by Irving Berlin's "Mr. President"), "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue." Bernstein and Lerner spent four years ('72-'76) working on the score and book, then obtained nearly a million dollars from Coca Cola to stage the show. The result? An unmitigated disaster for all involved. The reason? Lerner's characteristically convoluted, muddled book. The score and lyrics were almost universally praised.
Bernstein forbid a cast recording after "1600" closed following only seven performances on Broadway. Until now, only "Take Care of This House" obtained a life of its own; the rest of the score, though parts were later recycled by Bernstein in other pieces, languished unheard. Finally, someone has been interested enough to take approximately half of Bernstein's massive score and make an absolutely superb recording of it. "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" is, at last, available (albeit in a drastically abridged form) for those who might have been wondering what exactly the show was about.
The score is a masterpiece and this recording is first-rate. Though many reviewers have complained about the "operatic" performances on the disc, Bernstein set Lerner's lyrics in an operatic fashion. Lerner, a superb interpreter of his own songs, said numerous times that the songs in "1600" were the only ones he wasn't able to sing. The performances are magnificent, exactly as Bernstein intended for them to be sung. This wasn't written to be standard Broadway fare. Patricia Routledge, who played the First Ladies during the brief Broadway run, said she felt one of the show's flaws was that Lerner was trying to write another musical while Bernstein was writing a grand opera. She had a point.
The orchestrations (by Bernstein and two others) are superb, coloring the music to perfection. The conducting and vocals are fantastic, and if there is any doubt that "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," despite its confusing plot, was a major achievement (musically and lyrically), this recording should dispel that idea. Lerner's lyrics are witty, literate, by turns hilarious and poignant: a tremendous display of lyrical virtuosity. Bernstein's score contains some of the most vital, diverse and accomplished music of his career. No wonder the musical's failure was such a crushing blow to him; he had to have known how good the score was, and to have it lost after only seven performances was a shame.
"A White House Cantata" is a unique experience, and worth every penny of its price.
A flop, maybe, but still better onstage.......2001-03-17
One of my fondest memories of going to the theatre as a kid was the opening number of "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" entitled "Rehearse." Even though the show was done eons ago and I only saw it once, that Bernstein melody (rhythmic, syncopated, exciting) has always stayed with me. How disappointing then to not find that song on this album. The show was about a theatrical ensemble presenting to the audience the history of the White House, and the songs were divided between those of the ensemble "rehearsing" and the actual enactments themselves. Nagano and his producers have made the decision to exclude all but the latter from their cantata, and for simplicity's sake this would seem to make sense. However, the historical numbers on their own prove not to be very good. In fairness, the other half of the show may not have been all that brilliant either. ("1600..." was, after all, a notorious flop.) But my dim, adolescent recollection was that it all worked much better in performance. Bernstein's melodies are, for the most part, uninspired (except for the haunting "Take Care of This House" and the jazzy "Lud's Wedding") and Lerner's lyrics are arch, forced, and unnecessarily complicated. (Could I do better? Hell, no; this is simply my most humble opinion.) Thomas Hampson is in splendid voice (as always), but June Anderson is unfortunately humourless, particularly in the tour de force number in which she plays competing First Ladies. (I'll never forget Patricia Routledge's near genius interpretation of this on stage.) Let's hope someone will come along and do a full recording of all the material from the show, one that lacks the pretentiousness that so often sabotages this recording.
A Week of Flops Revisited.......2001-02-21
It was Thursday, May 6, 1976 and I was in New York for a business trip and what was to become my weekend of Broadway flops. Since, I was a last minute replacement on the trip; I hadn't made any plans for my free time, which meant I had to take my chances on the TKTS line. Thursday evening I got tickets to REX at the Lunt-Fontanne with Nichol Williamson and Glenn Close. Friday, I headed uptown to the Harkness to see Robert Morse in So, Long 174th Street. And Saturday evening, it was Pacific Overtures at the Winter Garden. REX was regrettable, Robert Morse was fun, and Pacific Overtures became one of my all-time favorites.
But it was the Saturday matinee of Bernstein's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue at the Mark Hellinger that I had to tell everyone about when I got back to Saint Louis. At the time I didn't realize that the show closed that day and that I was be one of the few people to actually get to see it. To be honest, except for Bernstein's music and some of the performances the show itself was totally forgettable. Sitting in the theater, I remember thinking that the show would really be better on the cast album.
So why couldn't I wait to tell everyone about it? Well, it was just one of those once in a lifetime theatrical experiences. The audience that day was sparse. It seemed like there were more performers on stage. Although I had a great seat...center orchestra with no one around me in all directions - I had a feeling that the producers had been giving tickets away on the street in an attempt to pad the house. In the left section there was a large Italian family group - grandma to babes in arms. In the middle of the first act mama opened a basket she had brought and began passing out plates of food to the family. The resulting melee attracted more attention than the performance on stage. Even the actors had to see what was happening. So, how could you forget the experience like that?
Unfortunately my hopes of the cast album went unfulfilled, though all the other flops and near flops I saw that week were eventually preserved on original cast recordings in LP, cassette and CD formats. Over the years, I've heard rumors that in his lifetime Bernstein had stopped attempts to record or revive the show because he had borrowed so much of the score for other projects.
Now we have The White House Cantata. It is a brave attempt, but in terms of recreating 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue it is more of a failure than the original show. I love Thomas Hampson and June Anderson on the opera stage, but 1600, like West Side Story, Candide and the other Bernstein shows, was not written as an opera. It was intended to be a bold and brassy Broadway show, and I would give anything to hear it done again by the likes of Ken Howard, Patricia Routledge, Gilbert Price and Emily Yancy.
A mixed but decided blessing........2001-02-03
I'll counter-intuitively start with the bottom line: this album is a delightful listen, and is necessary for serious fans of musical theatre as well as Bernstein admirers.
What precedes the bottom line, though, is less pleasant. This isn't a terribly theatrical recording -- DG chose to eschew singing actors (such as those who were so vibrant in the original production of this failed show) in favor of legitimate singers. Moreover, there is little dialogue preserved (though I admit that I would not like to see any songs omitted to make room for it). As a result, the score comes across much more strongly as music than as a representation of a theatrical event, and some of the lyrics aren't given their full due.
But it's still hard to dislike the album. June Anderson has been roundly criticized for her First Lady, but she's very good on all of the songs that don't require her to excel at comedy. The showstopper "Duet For One" does have such a requirement, but as it has already been brilliantly recorded by Judy Kaye, Anderson's botch job is less of a tragedy.
The other lead, Thomas Hampson, is a fine singer with real presence on his major numbers. Everyone else in the cast does well enough, and the technical elements of the recording are fine.
Back to the bottom line: the score sparkles, and it has been given exciting life by this cast. It isn't the recording we might have hoped to hear, but what we now have is priceless.

Second of Two Great Nights in Philly.......2001-11-03
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. Towards the end of the second leg of the massive 2000 world tour, Pearl Jam really got on a roll, delivering four incredible shows in a row. This includes two nights in Philly, followed by Washington, DC and a riotous show in Pittsburgh before taking a few weeks off. My personal favorite in the entire bootleg series is the show prior to this one, the first night in Philly. For tonight's follow-up performance, the band is almost as good, putting on another solid and energetic show. This one has a less creative set list than the previous night, with no real surprises, except some relative tour rarities in "Faithful," "Gods' Dice" and "Rival," all of which are especially impressive tonight. "State of Love and Trust" makes an unusually early appearance (to good effect), while "Last Exit" and "Porch" really ignite the encore. The show ends with a flawless rendition of The Who's powerhouse "Baba O'Riley" which is sung almost word-for-word by the ravenous crowd. The funniest moment of this show is in "Soon Forget," which Eddie Vedder screws up pretty badly due to some very specific distractions in the audience. I'll leave it to you to figure out what the problem was.
UNDER-RATED SHOW!!!!.......2001-05-21
Yes, this show is so very under-rated. I was a fairly decent fan of Pearl Jam going into this show at the then"E-Center in Camden, NJ"now the Tweeter center. Thats why Eddie asked the crowd is this Philly or NJ during the show. The tour listed the two nights as Philly, but they were actually right over the river in NJ. Also the performance of SOON FORGET in philly is clasic!
PJ in NJ 2.......2001-03-23
Pearl Jam's second night in Camden, NJ is not quite as good as the first show, but still is great. "Hail, Hail" is by far the best song from No Code and in concert the band takes the song to another level, The Merkenball song "I Got Id" appears in a superb version and they close the show out with a reverential version of The who's "Baba O'Reilly". On the first night they played "Breath" from the Singles soundtrack and in this show they replace it with their other contribution to the soundtrack, "State Of Love & Trust" which like the former song from the night before is the standout song from the set.
ooops from bettermaninphilly.......2001-03-04
i am correcting my own review where it reads:
he appears alone on stage after an encore
i wrote: after an encore
correction, it should read: after a break
sorry...and thanx for putting up my review.
Another Great Night on the Delaware River.......2001-02-28
Ok, you may have read that I narrowly gave the previous night the edge as the better of the two Philadelphia/Camden nights. But let me highlight why this show is also a must-buy bootleg: 1) A rockin' version of State of Love and Trust...enough said. 2) A hilarious and touching Vedder moment as he appears alone on stage after an encore to acoustically attempt Soon Forget. Sure, he messes up (twice!)...but that's what makes these live CDs so unique: they're so unpredictable! Buy this one along with the night before and enjoy two consecutive shows of varied setlists.

Music of the Past: Honoring Traditions.......2003-06-13
This archival recording of "csardas" music from Slovakia, as played in the Pennsylvania coal-mining regions, in the late 1920s and early 1930s, is valuable and tremendously enjoyable. Authentic music that is 100 years old is difficult or impossible to find, yet this CD most likely meets *exactly* this criteria. The music was recorded 75 - 80 years ago, therefore it was learned from musicians who would have lived in the late 1890s to early 1900s. There are few instruments, but they blend beautifully to create the fast-slow contrasting rhythms that characterize the "csardas". It is the alternating rhythms which captured one's imagination about peasant life and made the dance a sensation, even among the aristocracy in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Twirling couples, with passion and intensity, released the cares of the work week, meeting in dance halls to forget the harsh circumstances and daily risks of the coal-miner's life. There is a first violinist, who plays the tune and melody with haromonies that we are accustomed to hearing ... the second violinist, however, deliberatly tunes his instrument to a different key, for a contrasting sound, which is a bit dissonant to modern ears, yet sounds very appealing the longer one listens. The only music similar to this is from the Mezoseg and Kalotaszeg regions of Transylvania (now called Romania). It too has the contrasting sounds which are a bit "off-key", having been handed down from generation to generation, with few changes in the past 100 - 150 years. [Refer to CDs by Sandor Fodor Neti & Okros, Meta, Tukros, Hegedos, and the Teka bands.] This is "Old Country" music: raw, intense, and earthy, just as life was lived then, compared to the orchestral smoothness and refinement of today's instrument, the violin. Besides the most important instrument, the violin, one hears the cimbalom, clarinet, and bowed bass. Some bands also included, the coronet, and used a piano accompaniment instead of the cimbalom. At times, even the accordion was included. Although, the CD is primarily 'csardas' music, there are six polka tunes from Poland and a kolomyjka from the Lemko-Ukrainian region. This CD is highly recommended for anyone searching for truly authentic traditional music, which their grandparents and great-grandparents might have listened to. Without a doubt, the music on this CD will connect you to the roots of your ancestors.

Esoteric Treasure.......2002-09-07
I was delighted to come across such a disk. Some of my family roots include anthracite miners from PA of Slovak/Russian/Polish
ethnicity (no, "Whiteash" is not Native American). To clean up and go to a weekend dance or listen to an impromptu "jam" in the mining towns must have been a cathartic delight. I can clearly feel the energy of the musicians in their playing - rightly referred to in the liner notes as rambunctious. I hear a similar quality in the Stanley Brothers' early recordings - commonly referred to as "hillbilly."
Fair warning to the uninitiated: The first 5 cuts (Michael Tokarick's band) have two violinists. I'm guessing that one is highly skilled and the other is less skilled, suffering mic-fright, surviving a hangover - whichever - and it can be hard to take. I'm also guessing that the bands, for the most part, got one shot at making a suitable recording due to cost of studio time. But these are only guesses. I, for one, enjoy and treasure this disk nonetheless.
You feel as if you are in a Slovak Club in Pennsylvania.......1998-11-10
Very Good, contains alot of archival material that would be very hard to collect. Is based on the 78 rpm records. If Eastern European Music is your passion this CD is very good!! Would like to see more of this type of music!!

Product Description
Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

Fantastic!!!!!!.......2006-03-15
This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

Full Of Energy.......2007-05-02
This is definitely one of the shows with the most energy from the bands 2000 tour. It was the last show of that particular part of the tour. You would think the band would sound tired and worn out, but they dont. They put on a show full of great songs that are played very well. The show opens up with a killer version of Even Flow. It may be the best version of the song Ive ever heard and I own at least 70-80 PJ cds! The show hardly stops rocking after that. Theres also incredible versions of harder songs like Hail Hail, Animal, Go, and Once. The band only makes a few flub ups and they are very forgivable. There are only 3 in total actually. One being an awful version of Light Years were Ed messes up the lyrics in the first verse and stops himself; he then fixes his mistake. Theres one little guitar screw up in Breakerfall. One of the guitars start to fade in and out, pretty much like cutting out right at the beginning of the song. The other lyrical mistakes take place in Crazy Mary. I believe that was due to Eddie being more concerned about the woman with the umbrella coming onstage. So, he kinda messes up. When that woman gets onstage and requests a song she really picked a good one. Wash. The only time it was played during the whole tour. Its a pretty good version as well. Not exactly like the studio take, but still is played with great energy. This was one of my first PJ bootlegs to buy. Im glad it was. Its truly a great performance and is much better than the Philadelphia shows and the Seattle ones as well. If anyone is still after these shows for some reason, try your hardest to get this. I can promise you wont be disappointed.
One Final Blast on the First Leg.......2005-08-05
This final show on the first leg of the 2000 American Tour is now out of print, and fairly pricey if you happen to stumble across it. It's a shame, because it is a great performance, only a very small notch below the Washington D.C. show from the same leg of the tour. The previous show in Phildelphia was reportedly somewhat shakey, and Pearl Jam seems on a mission to redeem itself here with a great set list (opening with "Even Flow"!) and a blazing performance. If you can find this show, pay the premium. It's worth every penny.
WITHOUT A DOUBT, #1 OF ALL 72...B SIDE IS UNBELIEVABLE.......2002-08-18
I'll keep it short because these get boring-- i own all 72 shows, this is the best of all of'em.... no huge sound problems (which happens on most shows, unfortunately).... the version of I Got Id is improved, a nice change (the only version of the song i'll listen to), and unbelievably strong. Stone's Mankind is great, and the version of Insignificance is probably the best they've done live. Porch has a longer than usual instrumental bridge, with Eddie getting the crowd involved, and a strong Ledbetter close. Yeah, every review says each show is the best, and i did not see this show, only the Philly shows, but this is the only show of the 72 that never leaves my CD changer. Agree?
if ur getting one bootleg get this........2002-05-29
I own them all and this is the best. Pure energy, great rockin setlist and even has wash! Buy it!
One of my favorites........2002-04-18
Of the US series.. this ranks near the top of the list. This underated show deserves the ape/man logo marking it as a special show. There is an energy to this show that is hard to explain. Animal for instance friggin rocks harder than just about any version I have heard (I currently own 10 europe/us shows). Betterman may not have the entire 'Save it for Later' refrain, but it is performed with more enthusiasm than the versions that do contain the entire version. The version of daughter is my favorite of the US shows. Evenflow is lightning and Elderly Woman will give you goosebumps with a nice mix of the audience singing along. Wash seals this as a must have CD! I can't put my finger on exactly why... but this the US show I reach for the most when I need a live fix.
