Bloc Party may have arrived in an outbreak of like-minded British bands set upon shooting holes in the Union Jack while knocking out a sharp post-punk soundtrack, but it didn't take long for the foursome to set itself apart from the pack. Fronted by Nigerian-born singer Kele Okereke, the group's 2005 debut, Silent Alarm, soared as much on crystal ambition as it did on ridiculously danceable pop melodies. This follow-up is darker, more cluttered, and harder to digest. That doesn't make it less striking. Exploring themes of racism, terrorism, sexuality, addiction, and death--the usual fodder for a cosmopolitan three-day bender--Weekend in the City is an album that plays to Bloc Party's strengths: tempo-shifting rhythms, inventive art-rock arrangements, and lyrics that twist and turn on a whim. "The Prayer" and "Uniform" are particular standouts, capturing moments when Okereke lets self-importance fade and majestic beats take charge. --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
The follow-up to their smash debut, "Silent Alarm", is every bit as bright, powerful, and catchy, with the addition of more muscle, attitude, depth, and a bit of polish courtesy of their producer, Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol). Inspired by lead singer Kele Okereke's interest in what he calls "the living noise of a metropolis", this record captures every detail of daily life in a modern city from the ebullient to the mundane. From the quiet desolation of commuting to casual sex, from going out on a Friday night to the long ride home early in the morning, these are songs desperate to understand the meaning that pulses under the moments of our every day.

don't believe the naysayers, this album is an amazing feat........2007-06-29
if you take music your music seriously, you'll feel the strong steady pulse that beats below this killer sophomore album.
seriously. fingers out. put it on the cd sleeve. keep still and wait a few seconds...
okay. maybe if you have an imagination in hyperdrive but still, my point is that while "Weekend in the City" may lack the dancier and poppier aspects "Silent Alarm" posessed, the fact they've gone DEEPER into the instrumentals and textures and ambient noises make it so much more fulfilling! anyone can dish out some drum machine beats and a catchy guitar hook, and while this album definitely has that (hello? "Sunday" anyone?), I love how they took the direction of my personal favorite from "Silent Alarm" ("So here we Are") and just built so much on that.
Is "Weekend in the City" an album full of club-banger hits for the indie kids who still call themselves "hipsters" without irony? Probably not. Is it an album good for introspection while wandering around at 2am downtown in the city (not smart, but appealing!)? Most definitely. buy this album. you won't regret it.
A Solid, but Less Upbeat, Sophomore Album.......2007-06-29
There was a time, about a year and a half ago, when I considered Bloc Party to be one of my favorite bands. I listened to their debut, Silent Alarm, almost obsessively and still consider it one of my favorite albums - whether I needed something energetic or pensieve, I could, and still can, find it on that album.
Naturally I was excited about A Weekend In The City before I ever heard it, and upon hearing it I wasn't sure what to think. The first six of the album's eleven songs grew on me immensely, while the second half of the album blurred together without any of the songs making an impression on me. Upon revisiting them, I realized that the immediately listenable songs didn't necessarily have longterm playability; conversely, the five final songs reflect just as much, if not more care than the other tracks -unfortunately, when listened to consecutively, they do tend to sound similar. Listen to them separately, and they really do shine: particularly, 'I Still Remember' and 'Sunday' didn't really grab me when I first heard them, but now rank among my favorites by the band.
All in all, AWITC is a slower album to enjoy than its predecessor, with more of a focus on setting soundscapes than writing hooks for catchy choruses. If you enjoyed the more contemplative parts of Silent Alarm, you'll love A Weekend in the City. Otherwise, expect to spend more time becoming acquainted with the work here.
Is It So Wrong to Crave Recognition?.......2007-06-16
I saw this band on Late Night with Conan O'Brian and I was very impressed with their live performance of "The Prayer." The singer was Black, but his style was somewhere between, Robert Smith, of The Cure, and Feli Kuti, the Nigerian singer and Afrobeat band leader. Turns out the band was fronted by Nigerian-born singer Kele Okereke. The rest of the band looked like a lot of post-punk limey slackers, and by gum, they were exactly that.
From London and South East United Kingdom, this latest deconstruction and reassembly of the modern sound is astounding, indeed. "The Prayer" sounds like some kind of Gregorian chant, or possibly the throat singing of Tibetian monks. The ominous hum builds and is joined by the coolest guitar riff since Satisfaction, a crisp Telecaster riff, at once primative and modern. When Kele Orereke begins to sing, a similar mixture of modern and primative ensues, as electric guitars, bass, and drums, fraternize with an African chant. Lots of shifting tempos, noise and melody, melody OF noise, dance tempos, irresistable beats.
I found their page on MySpace and watched the video for "The Prayer" and some other songs. "The Prayer" video is very good, and it just shows some modern urban kids out for a night on the town, trying to find a cool club in which to dance. Kele is a face in the crowd, lost in the shuffle, but he knows if they would only give him a chance, they would see that he is really a unique phenomenon, worthy of their attention and patience. The lyrics are really very powerful.
Another video shows the band playing on a train, and is like one long pan from car to car of a moving train. Some kind of special effects technique was involved, because it seems like the eye of the camera dollys through the entire train, from engine to caboose, and the band and Kele keep popping up on every car.
Other videos show band members as animated cartoon characters. Shades of Scoobey Doo, or at least The Gorillaz.
I have just discovered this band, but from what I have seen so far, I am very impressed, and will pursue hearing more of their excellent music. A good place to start is on their MySpace page, and if you are intrigued like I was, you can get this album, A Weekend in the City, or else try their first album, Silent Alarm.
Just so so (In my opinion).......2007-06-07
The album starts off very softly but then the opening song progresses into something you can really get up and move to. It's exhilerating an spectacular.
"Hunting for Witches", while still an extremely good songs, reminds me a little too much like "Helicopters" from the band's original album "Silent Alarm". The fact that it's also the 2nd track (same position as Helicopters) is slightly jarring. If you own both albums take a listen, you'll be shocked and slightly annoyed. To me, while "Hunting for Witches" does stand as a marked improvement from "Helicopters" the fact that the two songs are soooo similar, is slightly annoying, but I digress.
"The Prayer" is quite possibly one of the best songs on the album. You can practically feel the artist pleading for the power to be a star and then feel the emotion as he imagines his own future greatness. Really inspiring stuff.
"Uniform" stands well but tends to go off on awkward tangents at time that one fines a little unnecesary.
All the other tracks save for the last one, seem mediocre at best. Just not all that great, but still not necessarily bad either.
The very last album, which describes a real drug for antidepression is one of those song that can really get to you. One of the band's former detractors, who name escapes me at the moment, said that this is the song that made him cry into a cushion for about 15 minutes.
THAT TOUGH SECOND ALBUM.......2007-05-28
That tough second album. We've all heard it before, a band has a great debut only to stumble and fall flat on its face when they release the follow up. Bloc Party was one band I thought was quite immune to the notion of stumbling. After all, 2005's Silent Alarm was one of my favorites that year. Alas, 2007 has brought us Weekend In the City, that tough second album that really is, that tough second album.
It starts out extremely promising with Song For Clay, a song that, after an erie opening, quickly shotgun blasts into the familar guitars found on Silent Alarm, it's punchy, direct and a whole lot of fun to boot. The next few numbers, including Waiting For The 7.18 and Uniform, aren't as memorable. When we hit the record's fourth track, The Prayer, we can finally hear some new direction. The Prayer, which was the lead UK single, sounds off and devoid of a melody. This is mainly for the experimental road Kele and co. have taken rhythmically. He has said in many interviews that the drum track for The Prayer came from listening to an old Busta Rhymes song, the one with the elephants in the video, I'm sure you know it. I applaud them for trying something new, but the song's pacing is annoying, even after a few listens you can only start to hear a melody. The chorus, when it finally kicks in, is actually very good and it almost saves the tune... almost. Which brings us to the last half of the record and the main problem with the entire offering. It seems in the struggle to expand one's sound, Bloc Party have lost the one thing they did well, hook friendly melodies. Even the single, I Still Remember, would be one of the skippable tracks if it appeared on Silent Alarm. Other songs don't fare even that well. Again, the melodies and hooks are non-exsistant, making a song like Sunday, just passable, but just barely, much like this record as a whole. Its good, but in the end, it should've been better and a little bit more fun to listen to.

CD1
While Ultra Weekend isn't quite distinguishable from the Ultra Dance volumes, it does deliver some of the biggest remixers and artists. The real issue with this volume is that many of the biggest, hardest tracks to get on CD don't have very long durations on the commercial disc:
1. hurt...christina Aguilera (5:45) (this is the club mix heard most of all the mixes out there. Great mix--wish it had been longer than 5:45)
2. Promiscuous...Nelly Furtado (3:47) (more of a funky/disco groove than the Ralphi Rosario mix. Again--not long enough!)
3. With Love...hilary Duff (4:35) The thumping electro house mix. Not even 5 minutes!)
4. Unfaithful...Rihanna (7:34) (the brilliant Tony Moran mix, and closing in on 8 minutes long, it is one of the few high points for collectors)
5. U & Ur Hand...Pink (5:40) (nice length run of the slammin' bimbo jones mix of this hot Pink track)
6. Here in your Arms...Hellogoodbye (2:49) (WHY bother putting it on here for less than 3 minutes? And as always, none of the remixes can live up to the synthpop perfection of the original mix)
7. sumthin serious...audio club (5:14) (awesome electro house mix of this ridiculously catchy track)
8. Ride a white horse...goldfrapp (5:24) (a bit more progressive electro we expect from goldfrapp. This one's a great trip)
9. Cry for you...September (4:39) (follow-up to "satellites" is another commercial dance winner with an electro house edge)
10. Showstopper...Danity Kane (6:48) (if for nothing else, THIS is the reason to buy this CD--nearly 7 minutes of the commercially unreleased Dave Aude electro mix of P. Diddy's latest ensemble)
11. in the dark...tiesto (4:44) (nice, atmospheric male vocal track by tiesto. Love this track--reminds me of The Killers)
12. truly madly deeply (4:06) (just what it sounds like. Cascada covering Savage Garden)
CD2
Disc 2 begins with the `groovy' house track by Bob Sinclar, which is not my thing, but it then progresses into a predominantly darker, deeper, harder mix of electro house that keeps you pumped throughout, with a few big tracks like "proper education", "sex n money", and "feel alive." The tracks are predominantly longer on this disc:
1. world hold on...bob sinclar (7:23)
2. SOS...Stonebridge (7:00)
3. Destination calabria...alex gaudino (5:10)
4. Perfect...mason vs. princess superstar (5:37)
5. The creeps...Camille jones (5:52)
6. Lollipop...dada (5:26)
7. Proper education...eric prydz vs. floyd (4:57)
8. Changes...chris lake (6:54)
9. Sex n Money...oakenfold (5:46)
10. World is mine...david guetta (6:06)
11. Feel alive...benassi (4:38)
12. Sorry...kaskade (6:21)

To loosely paraphrase the traditional Passover question: What makes this Dave Matthews live album different from the last one he recorded at Denver's Red Rocks amphitheater a decade previously? There's a savory cover of The Zombies' chestnut "Time of the Season" strategically frontloaded, but this edition revolves largely around the Stand Up album he was ostensibly promoting on this '05 tour stand at his beloved Rocks, as witnessed by focused renditions of the title track, "American Baby" and "Dream Girl" here. But as the set's workout of "Louisiana Bayou" forcefully argues, their sense of energetic economy (and occasional, timely politicking) infuses much of the rest of Matthews jamfest ethos with renewed muscular wallop as well. The presence of a horn section and guest keyboardist Butch Taylor on some tracks ups the ante considerably, though even core band renditions of staples like disc one's expansive closer "Bartender" seem charged with renewed passion. The running order here occasionally betrays the collection was edited from four nights and a considerably wider range of performances, but the included bonus DVD gratifyingly expands upon the audio rather than simply replicating it with complimentary performances of "Crash Into Me," "Recently" and "Jimi Thing." --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Must Have for DMB guys.......2007-06-06
I'm a huge DMB fan and I only have one other concert DVD. The Central Park Concert has been a great thing for me to pop in when I want to get to see them play most of my favorite songs, but it started getting old for me so I decided to get this as my second DVD to freshen things up, and it was a very good choice. Good song selection that is a little bit different from the mainstream stuff you see and I like the camera angles. The band goes crazy on Louisiana Bayou and it's very fun to see Randolph there as a guest. Everybody Wake Up is very cool, So Much To Say and Too Much are also awesome as well, and Dreamgirl is a nice mellow one. On the CD I would say that Don't Burn the Pig is a great song and I also enjoyed Stolen Away, Smooth Rider, and Hunger For the Great Light. If you want the main DMB songs, buy Central Park. If you want a variety of new songs, buy this next.
Weekend on the Rocks Live.......2007-05-15
Love Dave Matthews anyway awesome DVD and cd /they only show part of the 4 day show that they put on i would love to have seen all 4 days of it i play the cd in the truck all the time it's great
Awsome.......2007-01-04
Dave Matthews have released so many live CD and this one is another collection of their great live CD!
It's amazing how much they could play the same songs they have been playing for couple years! People still loves to hear what they offer. It's amazing.
Dave Matthews Band is kinda band you could listen to their songs 41 times and still feel fresh.
Dave almost at his best.......2006-11-20
I liked the cd for the most part. Dave Matthews Band has their own music genre. Nothing like them. This, however, wasn't my favorite Dave CD. Since it was live, Dave got a little caught up in the moment, and I don't like how he strains his voice a lot in this cd. Still pretty freaking awesome though.
Incredible - wish there was more!.......2006-10-22
I'm a DMB obsessive, and this album was a huge addition to my collection. I've been stuck on all the old stuff and haven't really gotten into the new stuff until i bought this one. On the cd's, the highlights for me are Don't Burn the Pig, #41 (one of DMB's all time best!) and Smooth Rider. The entire DVD is brilliant, but the ones that stand out: Dreamgirl, Louisiana Bayou, Recently and Jimi Thing. If a non-DMB fan watches Recently on the DVD and is not a fan afterwards, they have serious issues. The only issue I have is that I wish there was more on the both the CD's and DVD!
Buy it - you won't regret it for a second!

Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age is the sequel to Itzhak Perlman's popular album of movie themes performed with soundtrack composer John Williams. Unlike its predecessor, this disc focuses on classic cinema themes and features the Boston Pops Orchestra, not the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Laura theme, as well as Max Steiner's Now Voyager and Miklós Rózsa's Lost Weekend themes, sound lush and romantic in Perlman's lyrical hands. The traditional Irish jig "The Quiet Man" is the disc's most upbeat moment, while the unforgettable Gone with the Wind theme is its most memorable. These are timeless, dreamy compositions, though not necessarily the most uplifting. If you're looking for something cinematic to get your heart racing, check out Ricardo Chailly's recording of Shostakovich's film scores or even Leopold Stokowski's classic work on Fantasia. --Jason Verlinde

I cannot review the product which I know is great , as I was billed for it, but never received it.
Perlman, Williams reunite in wonderful Serenade sequel.......2003-12-04
With the success of Cinema Serenade, conductor John Williams and violinist Itzhak Perlman reunited to record another collection of classic movie themes. Performed this time by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the music of Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age harkens back to the days of stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Ray Milland and Clark Gable.
The 12 selections include themes by Hollywood legends Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (whose son George would later produce several of composer/conductor Williams' scores for Varese Sarabande Records). Cinema Serenade 2 presents beautiful arrangements of Steiner's themes for Now, Voyager and Gone With The Wind, Korngold's love theme from The Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie Chaplin's lovely Modern Times and "St Patrick's Day," a traditional Irish song from the John Wayne classic The Quiet Man.
Since I consider myself to be a charter member of The Rick Blaine Society of Rank Sentimentalists, I'd have to say my favorite tracks on this album are Herman Hupfeld's timeless "As Time Goes By" from 1942's Casablanca and Victor Young's "My Foolish Heart" (from the 1949 film of the same title). It was while I was listening to the radio (on the late WTMI 93.1 FM classical station) that the DJ played "As Time Goes By" and I discovered this recording of mostly lyrical themes; I listened to Perlman's haunting violin solos and the Boston Pops' bravura performance and nearly wept. I, of course, bought this CD the next day and it's now one of my favorites.
For fans of Itzhak Perlman, John Williams or film music in general, both of the Cinema Serenade CDs are a treasure trove of beautiful and memory-stirring themes.
Some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear.......2001-06-15
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever heard. The selections are musically much richer than Cinema Serenade I. In particular, Sir William Walton's music from Henry V, Korngold's music from Robin Hood, and Newman's music from Wuthering Heights are standouts. The Korngold is my favorite, with several themes from the picture packed into a short love scene lifted straight from the movie. The arrangements on this album are stunningly lush, especially those by Williams. His opening chords from The Uninvited are terrific harmonically.
Don't compare it to Cinema Serenade 1.......2000-01-24
Itzhak Perlman is still considered by me the best violinist alive today. His techiniques are so impressable and heartouching and nobody can contest that. The idea of this CD was wonderful, although the selections of the musics aren't so good than in Cinema Serenade 1. But anyway, if you want to listen musics that worldwide the people emotioned with, buy this CD, but don't fall in the temptation to compare it to the first one.
I can't stop listening to this CD...........1999-10-03
All of those lush movie themes are greatly compiled on this CD. I especially liked Laura and Stella by Starlight. After listening to this, you will want to go out and buy/rent these great old movies!

The unique collaboration between Groove Armada's Andy Cato and left-field jazz/dance singer Rachel Foster that first premiered in the summer of 2001 gets an extended airing on the Pursuit of Happiness. The album is a decidedly laid-back affair, which never breaks above the "at rest" pulse of "Into the Sun." It's clear to see why so many have compared the Foster/Catto collaboration with Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn, as most of the tracks are strongly reminiscent of Everything But the Girl. "Best Days of Our Lives" and "Angel" also follow the pleasurable "spaced" style developed on Sade's Lovers Rock. Echoes of Groove Armada's infamous "At the River" feature heavily on "Jericho" and on the windswept album closer "Higher Ground." While all the stereotypical chill-out clichés can be used to describe the album ("lazy summer afternoon music," "4am post-clubbing soundtrack"), Pursuit of Happiness is perhaps three years too late, and although pleasant enough, serves as a quaint reminder of the summer of `99. --John Galilee

I love this CD.......2007-05-07
This is now one of my favorite cds that I play often. I think Rachel Foster sounded like a cross between Enya and Sade. I love her voice! Jericho is my favorit song. So far, everyone that has listened to this cd to has loved it.
Enjoy
Weekend Players.......2007-04-04
I bought the album because I heard the song "Jericho" on my local smooth jazz station and liked the song. The rest of the album is quite interesting, but the best part is the song "Jericho". It is quite haunting.
Set to repeat and sit back and relax.......2007-02-09
One of the best CD's I have ever bought. I wish they would come out with another album soon.
Still never far from my player.......2007-01-20
This is one of my favorite cds that I play often - and considering I have over 2500 cds...
When I first heard this, I thought Rachel Foster sounded like a cross between Enya and Annie Lenox. Her vocals are superb. The arrangements are perfection. Jericho is so sensual. Francois K (one of my favorite djs) did a remix of 21st Century that kicks...)
Everyone that I have given this cd to has loved it.
Brilliant!.......2006-12-06
I first heard of this album when my streaming radio rotated it into my playlist. I immediately bought it and have loved it ever since. It's no surprise that one of the Groove Armada guys is behind this (with a new female vocalist), because I love their stuff, and it's a similar style.
Great chill-out/lounge music for hanging out on the couch, with candles & a good glass of wine.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

An Excellent Live CD!!!!.......2005-12-26
I have been a fan of George Benson for almost 3 decades. This is an excellent CD which does more to showcase his superb voice more than his great guitar playing. Among my favorites on this CD are....Lady Blue, The Greatest Love Of All, and It's All In The Game. Some of the arrangements are with a disco-beat. Hey, this was the 70's after all and Disco-Jazz was at it's peak. Overall, this is an excellent live CD!!!!
Benson Live.......2001-11-30
Weekend In L.A. is a smooth live recording by George Benson. His version of "On Broadway" is a great combination of jazz, r&b with a dash of funk thrown in. Mr. Benson's voice has never sounded finer and the song became a top ten single. There are other great performances on the album including the smoky "Lady Blue", the breezy title cut, the heavy jazz of "Ode To A Kudu" and a touching tribute to his mentor Wes Montgomery, "We Remember Wes". There is also Mr. Benson's original version of "The Greatest Love Of All" which is from the Muhammad Ali biopic, The Greatest. The song is nothing like the overplayed, schmaltzy version that Whitney Houston had a hit with. It is an understated, pretty song that Mr. Benson doesn't go over the top with.
The best compromise of George Benson Singer and Guitarist.......2001-08-12
This particular recording exhibits a perfect compromise between George Benson pop singer and George Benson masterful guitarist. "Ode to Kudu" is absolutely spectacular in it's beauty. George plays the hell out of it. "Weekend In La" has George flexing his jazz muscles on the is pleasant tune, you even hear a quick "I Got Rhythm" quote".
"Lady Blue" is soulful, stronger for the emotion than the lyrics which are a bit trite.
"On Broadway" was a bit overplayed on the radio but is still on of the most original renditions of this song ever recorded. This song smacks of Phil Upchurch's inventive musical conceptualizations. Phil has this very unique approach on how to combine a rhythm to a piece never sacrificing the song in order to get groove. Other's could learn alot from Phil.
Overall this album has that balance that George has never been able to duplicate subsequently. A vast improvement over "Breezin'" and "In Flight"
A Must.......2000-03-05
this set really hits Home.George Benson rocks the stage here. His Voice&Playing is in top form. Before he went Between Jazz&Pop he was on top of his game.the band is Kicking through out.
smooth as silk.......2000-02-18
This live cd is smooth and silky. George has an all-star band with him too.

Weekend in Monaco.......2007-01-18
This is one of my favorite CD's from my favorite smooth jazz band. Great music, phenomenal talent...
Ah the memories..........2006-11-10
I was a wierd little kid. On one hand, I listened to Nirvana and Soundgarden and loved them. But when i was home, in my nerdly kingdom of a room, I popped this CD in. Then, and only then was i truly happy. Painting my Games Workshop miniatures. You see, there's gotta be something about the Rippington's music to appeal to a kid with no jazz knowledge to speak of. Years later, free from potential ridicule, i can relax and listen to the Rippingtons and truly understand that music like this can provide an atmosphere, or motivate a mood.
Speaking to those of you who like mainstream music. If you want something more out of music, something more substantial and classy than the crap out there now, Weekend in Monaco is your portal. Just don't let your friends catch you listening to it.
Their last real good CD!!!.......2006-01-31
After several years in a row of great CD's...who would have thought that The Rippington's would have started on a downward spiral that would cause many loyal fans to distance themselves from them. This is their last real good CD!!! I don't care what anyone say's after this it was a bunch of ups and downs. Perhaps, it was all the personnel changes that affected their music the most. This set starts out with the excellent title track...followed by one of my favorite songs of all time by them called St. Tropez. The guitar solo at the end is one of Russ's best and uses some of his catchiest phrasings ever. Also listen to the great bass lines by Kim Stone. He's a superb player!!! This is in my opinion the best song on the CD!!! After this the track Vienna is the typical acoustic/classical guitar-led song that the Ripps are also known for. Indian Summer is an up tempo techno-jazz/rock type song. It's okay, but not really the kind of music that I like from them or anyone else. A Place For Lovers is a slow bossa-nova style-song that is very nice and relaxing to listen to. Carnival is a Latin-style song that I enjoy, but eventually would become their dominant style on later CD's. Moka Java has a new world music type feel...the percussion playing by Steve Reid is great on this one. Highroller is another high energy techno-jazz style song. It's a pretty good song overall. Where The Road Will Lead Us is a dreamy song...the kind of song that you would like to listen to before you go to bed. A fitting ending to a CD well-worth buying. I made a conscience decision to buy this one long ago and listened to it while I wrote this review so that I could better educate the potential buyer.
Starts great - Ends great.......2005-10-04
Weekend in Monaco is an outstanding effort by the Ripps. A great addition to any jazz lover's collection.

Great Music.......2007-04-04
I really like this CD as well as most of the Ultra Records CD's I especially like heady female vocal trance and dance music with lots of drive. However I have exausted the Ultra Records CD series. If there are any CD's that highlight (heady hard driving) trance and or dance music with beautiful female vocals email me with any suggestions at: Carol-Ann26@webtv.net
Pop/House Mix.......2006-10-01
Well...CD1 starts of with 6 Pop/Rock songs remixed into dance songs...they're ok...then the tempo rises with Stunt...and same old same old Cascada's "Everytime We Touch"...CD1 is ok..pretty mainstream i would say...
CD2 is better...with hot House/Disco anthems...highlights would be Olav Basoski's "Waterman"...Morrison "Love of My Life"...my favorite S.O.S. by Filterfunk (what a great song!) ooohh Chanel's "My Life" that is verly growing in me...it's a good song...Editors "Munich" is smooth...with a nice bouncy rythm...the CD ends in Electro style with Ferry Corsten's criticized "Fire" which doesn't bother me at all...and Goldfrapps top hit Ooh La la...but Benassi's mix of it is kinda annyonig...
overall pretty good Compilation!
ultra weekend.......2006-08-04
this is a 2 disk cd. the first cd, if full of songs that you may have heard on the radio. kelly clarkson, is one of the singers on the cd. that is the main reason why i purchased the cd. love that remix. the other songs are ok, but the 1 cd is the best of the 2.
Mainstream Remixes.......2006-08-04
CD-1, I could barely tolerate. I personnally haven't heard too many Top 40 Pop songs remixed as trance versions that I have actually liked, anywhere.
CD-2 Much improved. Pretty good track selection if you are into house. I'm more of a trance fan.
Overall, disappointed.
Cotton Candy Weekend.......2006-06-28
After buying and enjoying most of Ultra Weekend I, I had high hopes that Ultra II would follow along in the same style. At first glance the artists looked promising, but after listening I was rather disappointed.
Although there are a couple of tracks on Disc 1 that are good, for the most part it reminds me of cotton candy - too pop-sweet for me to enjoy for very long. And the beats are hardly original.
Disc 2 is the better of the two because the mixes are more original, the tracks flow better, and the beats are more varied.
