Debt & Departure

The second side effort from Grifters frontman Dave Shouse is a leap from a one-man recording project to a full-blown band. Those Bastard Souls are a true indie-rock supergroup, featuring bassist Matt Field (Red Red Meat), drummer Kevin March, violinist Joan Wasserman (Dambuilders), and guitarist Michael Tighe (Jeff Buckley's band). While some of the songs are in the vein of Shouse's other band, a few unexpected sounds pop up. "Has Anybody Seen Her?" is eerily Mellencamp-like, driving fiddle, athematic chorus, and all. On the title cut, Shouse dips into a bag of soulful croons and invokes the spirit of Neil Diamond at his heartbreakin' best. That may not sound like indie rock, but neither does the album. Doug Easley's production keeps the sound crystal clear and leans on their decibels, even during the more sullen moments. Still, the rock songs fare best, especially the joyously propulsive "Train from Terminal Boredom." All in all, a solid album, perfect for summer stomping and late-night hootenannies. --Jason Josephes

Excellent, unbiased, factual. Puts a face on the 'why'. .......2006-03-30
Where did these overgrown vegetables come from?
Grapes? American Apples? What are they doing in the Jamaican marketplace? Why would a lush country as Jamaica import potatos, onions, carrots from the USA?
I saw the effects of the WTO on Jamaica from pre-teen to now my young adult years, but I never really understood all the why's. All Jamaicans and peoples affected or unnafected by the World Trade Organisation should watch. I watched it with a friend from India and he was amazed - as this agri-colonialism is what India is currently fighting in the WTO. I especially liked the commentary from the Rastafarian/Biblical points of view. And of course, the soundtrack is great - Buju B goes accapella!
Good, solid reminder of the film's message.......2002-06-27
I saw "Life & Debt" (documentary about effects of globilization specific to Jamaican life and culture) and thought the music was excellent. It was not merely there as background comfort, but really lent itself to the message of the film. The tracks hold lots of meaning for me having seen the film already, yet seeing the film is not necessary to dig the music. The "Life and Debt" by Matubaruka is a personal fave., as is Buju
Banton's "Circumstances". For those interested in the issues of globalization, World Bank, etc., the proceeds from the soundtrack go to URGE (non-profit org. founded by Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers. Solid reggae recording with an excellent purpose; also I think it is useful for spreading the message about globalization issues without preaching. I've had friends ask "what does he [Mutabaruka] mean by 'American farmers get the upper hand'?" and I go "well, it's like this...."

I recommend this album to anyone who thinks it may be exciting to fall into an antique chest of some sort and discover a miniature band playing in the corner on instruments fashioned out of items from a sewing box. It is magically hodgepodge, sometimes delicate, and overall, it is great.

Fayette County's finest.......2003-12-16
An original that never fails to please both on the album and on the stage, this CD contains some of the Clarks best known classics. No true collection is complete without this album!! Coming from Fayette County, I can assure you all that Cigarette TOTALLY describes the Fayette County fair!! (and for everyone else out there, the Clarks hail from Connellsville, not Pittsburgh ...WOOT for Fayette County)
a 'burgh classic.......2000-01-23
This album is definitely a must have for any Pittsburgh rock fan. It has a nice blend of fast and slow from the Clarks and of course the hit Cigarette which is my favorite. The Clarks are a taste of 'Burgh rock that you should not miss.

Delay-pedal flairý.......2003-06-06
U2 may have put emphasis on the stylish technique first, but Disco Inferno crafts the sound more fluid-like and less predictable. It's a music marvel, really. It's like watching Mercury dance-liquid, reflective, and glossy, the type of reverie that left you captivated for months as a child. There's a few conditions though: buy it, listen closely, and give thanks to yourself or the humble genius that recommended it to you.
Another Pop Tragedy.......1998-05-08
If you like Joy Division, early New Order, or My Bloody Valentine, you will adore In Debt. Dark and aesthetic, with a wonderful liquid quality, you will play the CD again and again, probably listening to nothing else for weeks. Unfortunatly this amazing British group has already split up, leaving us with only a hanful of music to cling to.

The obscure, defiantly avant-rock Texas band the Red Krayola has been held together entirely through the persistence of Mayo Thompson. For a taste of Thompson at his most accessible, however, consider Corky's Debt to His Father, an album made in 1970, put on record in 1986, and finally released eight years later. The album features a softer Thompson sounding like a Texan Syd Barrett, with songs that are spare and mystical but ultimately friendly. While the band sticks mostly to the familiar sounds of folk guitars, pianos, deep horns, and heavy bass, the instrumental arrangements are designed to clink along and never quite reach harmony. What is created in the end is an uptight and warped version of the stripped-back country & western of late '60s Dylan. If Thompson could sing, Corky's Debt's jazz touches and linear quality might have made the record something of an American Astral Weeks. Instead, we'll settle for coherence and a considerable amount of charm. --Roni Sarig
Customer Reviews:
One of those great, lost late-sixties artefacts.......2005-08-05
This LP has its origins in the most unlikely of sources, namely the Texan psychedelic underground, overseen by Kenny Rogers's brother Lelan (or Leland) and his International Artists imprint. This is the font from which sprung, among other things, the 13th Floor Elevators of "You're Gonna Miss Me" infamy, and the Red Crayola, of whom you've probably heard if you're on this page. Corky's Debt to His Father was even _more_ obscure (from a commercial perspective at least) than those first two wacky punk-skronk-folk Crayola LPs; in fact, it saw release only on a vanity label called Texas Revolution and pretty much sat unnoticed until Drag City reissued it in the nineties thanks to Thompson's association (I suspect) with Pere Ubu.
Which is all well and good, because this is by far his finest work, and indeed, one of the first and finest albums in the general singer-songwriter genre. Thompson's voice oddly resembles a pitch-challenged Brian Wilson, and so does his material (note the resemblance of the last section of "Oyster Thins" to some of the more upbeat material on the Beach Boys' 1968 LP, Friends) and posture (sweetly awkward, intermittently melancholy, otherworldly rock and roll adolescent). The backing is here from Texas session pros rather than any of Thompson's slightly more renowed associates, except for on "Black Legs", a striking solo blues cowritten by the novelist Frederick Barthelme.
Highlights include "Horses", an oddly romantic tune reminiscent of something on the first side of Love's Da Capo; "Oyster Thins", an epic, surprisingly touching domestic ballad reminiscent in spots of - of all things! - "Let It Be"; "Dear Betty Baby", a swaying seafaring ballad with mournful, Taps-like horns; "Around the Home", like something from an early Eno record, with a "Snow In San Anselmo"-like chorus; "Fortune", which presages the pensive country-rock of Gram Parsons's two solo LPs; "Worried Worried", like a crabwise sketch for the much later hits of Fastball; and two hysterically erotic blues that evoke bits of Blonde on Blonde.
And is the first song on the second side called "Side Two To You" or just "To You"? Only Mayo knows. Extra points, though, for those lyrics.
Nearly forgotten classic.......2001-01-18
Whilst those first two Red Krayola LPs remain absolute classics in the "out-rock"/psych genre (as well as the two subsequently released efforts from the same period put out by Drag City), often forgotten or simply passed by is this once-only solo effort from 'Krayola leader, Mayo Thompson. By this time (1970), the band had fallen apart and the incredible psych/freak music scene Texas had in the '60s (with fellow gods, the 13th Floor Elevators) had pretty much ceased to exist, so Mayo went into the studio with some hot Texan session musos (which may be an oxymoron...) to lay his heart on the line. This is the result. Playing it fairly straight as a country/folk disc - musically I'd say it reminds one mostly of Dylan, with a bit of Texan song-writer a la Townes Van Zandt/Guy Clarke in the mix - what really sets it apart are the truly demented lyrics and occasional unexpected swing in the rhythm. Avant-folk? Possibly, since it seems the likes of Jim O'Rourke and David Grubbs have pretty much staked their respective careers on this disc's achievements (I'm exaggerating, of course, but trying to make a point, so please remain in your seats...). Often compared to Skip Spence's "Oar" LP of the same period, there's certainly some similarities there, but mostly "Corky..." exists in its own universe. Mayo sounds like a man out of his time, greeting the horrible '70s with just the right level of cynicism and hope. It'd take him another 20-odd years to really get his due in the "biz" as one of the true innovators, so wait no longer to discover all the different shades and styles of this rather unique individual. Is that "Saddlesore" 7" he did from the same period still in print? If so, investigate...
amazing.......1999-10-26
while the music is decidedly more toned down than red crayola efforts, it is a great deal more realized than any earlier works by thompson's band. Stand out tracks include Venus in the Morning, and Good Brisk Blues. Why did Thompson not crack big with this album. Lou Reed vocals, Syd Barret sensibilities, and much better than Dylan blues, couple that with great lyrics. One of the best underground albums of all time(whatever that means).
Where did Corky stick that cigar?.......1999-08-21
Quite simply, one of the horniest albums of all time. One wouldn't have expected the edgy sexuality given the incurable art-nerd MT was in the 60s' Krayola. He'd just gotten married, that I know -- Rick Barthelme makes some rather odd comments about it in his first novel. Anyway, it's unlike anything else Thompson's ever done -- weirdly folky, unironically sweet in more than one orifice, and litero-Texan to a T. The old Glass Records vinyl reissue of this got me through college (on a tape with poor Skippy Spence's "Oar" on the other side). Thanks Drag City for reissuing it. Nice tie, dude.
This is one of the great overlooked classics of our age.......1999-07-14
After Red Krayola's first two records Thompson decided to strike out on his own and attempt something a bit more commercial than the esoteric (but I would submit brilliant) Red Krayola records. What happened was Corky's Debt to His Father and thanks to Drag City music fans now have access to it once again. Melodies that travel with you for days, bass and drum riffs that are infectous and lyrics that paint a humorously black portrait of Thompson's world, this is a record that should be hailed as a classic

Really great, even if you didn't see the movie.......2006-09-06
My wife and I love this music from the movie. The orchestral arrangements are great. This soundtrack consists mostly of the same three themes and variations thereupon, but with such wide arrays of treatment that it is really fun to listen to. It also helps that the movie was so vibrant that each individual scene can be called to mind simply by hearing the related track. Mostly consists of 1920s-style Jazz, but the dream sequence is very new-age. Colin Firth and Rupert Everett are simply hilarious, lending their voices to a song based on lyrics by Oscar Wilde.
Classic music from a classic movie!.......2002-10-23
The soundtrack to "The Importance of Being Earnest" is one that no music lover should be without. Right after seeing the movie I purchased the soundtrack. Even though I knew that the music was catchy in the movie, there was so much going on that it was really secondary. However, when you have nothing BUT the music playing, it is amazing! The music is a mix of toe-tapping movements and scene-recalling sounds. The song that Colin Firth and Rupert Everett sing is even included, and even funnier than when they sing it in the movie. I would highly recommend this soundtrack to add to your collection! FIVE STARS!! *****
Colin Firth Sings!.......2002-07-24
Imagine that. A rich ragtime jazzy compliation of songs which vividly bring you back to scenes from the movie. Rupert and Colin are hysterically funny but sweet in their versions of Lady Come Down.
"the spirit of Wilde lives on through Oliver Parker & Mole".......2002-05-14
This third remake of mistaken identities is quite witty with a biting tone that is captured by the director Oliver Parker, and a cast of players that pull this off with style. The roles are suited for Rupert Everett (Algernon Moncrieff), Colin Firth (Jack Worthing), Judi Dench (Lady Bracknell), Frances O'Connor (Gwendolyn Fairfax) and Reese Witherspoon (Cecily Cardew) is delightfully funny with a "Once upon a Time" hint, that completely confuses all the characters as to who is "Earnest". Well I won't spoil it for you, you'll just have to listen to the
score.
Our composer, Charlie Mole comes up with one of the happiest and delightful scores, reminiscent of the Henry Mancini days. Not since the Mancini years, have we had such a wonderful selection of tunes, each listener travels farther and farther into the story line. Mole's music takes you into the realm of aristocratic thick of things, with a adventurous touch that brings Oscar Wilde's story up to date with all the musical entrapments. Two wealthy noblemen hoping to win the love of their "hearts desire", each cue becomes more than just music, but a character within the film.
Hats off to Eliza Thompson (music supervisor), Simon Chamberlain (orchestrator), Geoff Alexander (conductor/orchestrator) and wonderfully recorded and mixed by my favorite engineer Mike Ross-Trevor. All in all, this score is a "film-score-buffs" fantasy come true, each cue has several genres. Throughout the album we have sprinkles of Jazz, Swing, shades of Scott Joplin and Parlor Tunes, even Rupert and Colin take a run at "LADY COME DOWN", a light and refreshing vocal duo that adds a personal touch. My highlight pick is "PERFECTLY HEARTLESS", collects each theme and wraps them into one neat package, gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:
wait for it to click people...4.5 stars!!!.......2006-10-01
Just found this effort a couple months back. after one or two listens I thought it had potential, but not very much. A few songs and hooks stood out but the songs didn't seem memorable. Then after about the fourth play ( over two weeks) it suddenly clicked. Melodies that seemingly weren't there appeared and they were good.....really good. Then the guitar started to click and the chops that were hidden in the mix before, starting sinking in....and it was good. Overall the album hits hard with lots of power-pop-type melodies, Hutch has a killer guitar tone, very sweet, and the rythm section is very musical, very tight. The melodies take a while to sink in, but then again the most lasting albums usually take a while to click. This is pop in it's purest and best form. The best cuts are the title track, "so spaced out" (with its funky wah and killer drums), the robust "Leaving Hollywood", "I don't belong" "something about you" (with a wonderful melody) and the slow burn of "Stay with Me". These are bonified killer melodies, and there is virtuallyu no filler to be had. I cannot say enough of how good this unheralded effort is. Production is bright and sparse...just guitar bass and drums. I'll wager this trio burns up the stage in live performances. I'll recommend this to anyone, even though I've just discovered it this Spring it's been this year's best pickup for my collection. Some may think this is formula, and it is..... it's Hutch's formula, the guy knocks it out of the park with this effort.
Got the formula down, but nothing hooks you.......2006-02-26
I buy a lot of power pop music. I am willing to sift through clunker songs and middle of the road production to find that one song that makes buying the album worth it. I thought surely I would find one such song on this album but I did not. As I listened, my thoughts were "Good, clear, production . . .definitely have the chops . . . have this pop formula down with good strummy guitars and crisp drum beats . . . . . " So from this detached, clinical, dissection I thought this album should be working. But I never heard a guitar hook or chorus that grabbed me or made me want to sing along - and the whole album is like that.
The thing is that I think if I heard these songs live in a club, I might be bowled over, but no energy or urgency translates off the record. To be fair, I am going to keep listening to it to see if it grows on me, but if you don't have the time to do this and your Amazon power pop dollars are limited, try something safer like The Churchills, The Tories, or classics like Big Star or The Records.
Generic Rock.......2006-01-28
I bought this based on a great review and was very disappointed. The music is pleasant enough, and no songs stand out as bad or annoying, yet nothing really grabs you. Ten minutes after you have played it you would be hard pressed to remember any of it.
HUTCH equals MUCH !.......2002-06-18
This has got to be the best rock/pop CD to come along in quite some time. Not only does this band have the chops, but they have THE SONGS. The hooks are potent, the riffs are catchy, and the songwriting is consistent all the way through.
How many albums have you bought recently that you can actually play from beginning to end without getting bored? By the time you get to the last notes of "All The Money In The World" you'll want to press the repeat button to take it back to the top. I might even go as far as saying that songwriter-singer-guitarist Joe Hutchinson is the new Ray Davies or Pete Townsend.
"THE BEAST WITHIN", "ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD", "TURN IT AROUND", "SO SPACED OUT" and "LEAVING HOLLYWOOD" will find their way into your top ten list and park themselves there for a LONG, LONG TIME.
Some influences I can hear are Material Issue, The Who, Oasis, Rolling Stones, and other British Pop and 60's stylings. Hutch are the real deal... "TURN IT AROUND" is easily the BEST ALBUM OF 2002.

This CD compilation is a musical proposal to cancel the debt with which many so-called third world countries are saddled. According to the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, 38% of the budget of African countries is devoted to debt servicing of loans from the World Bank and IMF; this is more than the amount these countries allocate for education, health, and other social services. Put together by Lusafrica label head François Mauger, the 16-track collection features mostly unreleased music from Cesaria Evora, Lenine, Massilia Sound System, Oliver Mtukudzi and others. Highlights include the Chico Cesar & Les Faboulous Trobadors' hyper-modern café amalgamation "Il Faut Payer" and Sally Nyolo and Shingo's hand drum-driven "Tilma." An artful argument against a crippling economic ailment, it's hard not to agree with the message when it is so eloquently put forward by musicians who actually come from the countries in question. No "We Are The World" crap from the sidelines here. --Tad Hendrickson

A Bouquet from the Third World.......2003-08-29
This fantastic singing, dancing album is composed of 16 songs from musical artists from around the world, all raising their voices against the grinding poverty that is the result of their nation's efforts to repay interest on development loans dating back to the 1960s. The CD, which was featured on NPR in an interview with producer Francois Mauger, offers gorgeous melodies, great polyrhythms, and incredibly poetic lyrics, many focusing on hopes for their children's future. Many of these musicians are little known in the U.S., but big stars at home. They include Zedess from Burkina Faso, Cape Verde's Cesaria Evora, Brazil's Chico Cesar, Lenine, and Fernanda Abreu, Zimbabwe's Oliver Mtukudzi, Cameroon's Sally Nyolo, Colombia's Totó La Momposina, and the incredible El Hadj N'Diaye of Senegal. His "Boor-yi" is my choice for the CD's most haunting, evocative song. All have donated their talents to spread their beauty, harmony, and "Drop the Debt" message around the world.
"Drop the Debt," a bouquet of songs from the Third World.......2003-08-22
"Drop the Debt" is a superb anthology of 16 heartfelt songs by some of the greatest popular artists of Africa and South America. I bought it right after hearing a track from it on NPR and it more than fulfills its promise. With beautiful melodies, great polyrhythms and instrumentation, and touching lyrics, all the songs address the most unpoetic subject imaginable -- the crisis of Third World Debt. And yet they do so poetically; all the lyrics are amazing. My favorites include "Cadeau Empoisonne" (Poisoned Gift), "Dolores dollares" (Dolorous Dollars), and "This land belongs to our children, It's in their name that we demand the debt be cancelled." Parisian Francois Mauger commissioned the songs which are sung in French, Portuguese, Spanish, and several African languages. All the musicians have donated their talent and proceeds from sales benefit an international Debt & Development Organization. Support the cause and enjoy the music!

Excellent, long and lonely record.......2001-04-19
I ran into TBS after the tragic death of Jeff Buckley, interested in what the other musicians were doing. After a rather bland first impression, I popped the disc in on a long trip by myself and found myself with a perfect companion for 50 lonely minutes of Connecticut highway. TBS guru and leader David Shouse is a consummate songwriter and lyricist; I thought more about the moodier side of the Replacements on albums like _Don't Tell A Soul_, but TBS is somewhat edgier, and doesn't often flaunt that rowdy back barroom charisma. "The Last Thing I Ever Wanted Was To Show Up And Blow Your Mind" is a gradual build to a nice choral climax - which is a musical shout-out in rememberance of Buckley, I am sure of it. Straight-out rockers like "Curious State" sure as hell don't hurt the cause either, balanced with stately, country-tinged relaxers like "Telegram". Joan Wasserman's violin provides an unusual, artsier, yet minimally-used musical dimension to some of the more typical rock posturing. The moody closer "Spaced Out" is more in tune with the general tone of the album than anything else, a bare-bones arrangement of piano, violin, lonely guitar and Shouse's wobbly, yet tragic and gripping vocals. Definitely one of the more overlooked bands of the last year or so, and perfect for those people who like their music thought-provoking and intimate.
Criminally overlooked..........2000-11-22
...by nearly everyone except certain rock critics, this album sold poorly, because very few people heard it. Not nearly "aggro" enough for commercial rock radio programmers, and too dark for any other format, this album nonetheless stood out as one of 1999's very best. Impassioned performances and top-notch writing are here in abundance, for fans of intelligent, literate rock.
Got the album in 8/99, & haven't bought a better album since.......2000-11-20
This album is brilliant. It is very original and by far the best that I've heard in a long time. Great engineering job too; sonically, the album is as good as the songs. I've been without my copy for several months now because I loaned it out to a friend. However, I like it so much, I'm thinking about buying it again!
Amazing!.......2000-04-23
By far the best CD I have heard in years. I can't quit listening to it. I listen to it over and over and over........... get the point. Buy it, love it, worth it!
it's still dave shouse.......1999-07-14
unfortunately this cd suffers from a lack of originality. not musically but in the choice of songs. there is a grifters song here, a bunch of songs that appeared on the first souls record and a dambuilders song or two. nonetheless there are some very beautiful moments and the lyrics are still shouse's. so who's to complain?
