Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14
I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.
Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.
The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)
The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.
"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.
"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.
"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.
When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.
To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it
The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05
I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!
Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19
You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.
What Great Music.......2003-05-11
I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.
super.......2003-04-17
What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

Like his good friend Esquivel, Henry Mancini mixed some mean orchestral Christmas cocktails. But where Esquivel was possessed by wackiness and whimsy, Mancini played things fairly straight and still managed to create a sound that defined his career and an era. Sadly, the selections here are pedestrian, even by the well-trodden holiday boulevard standards. "White Christmas," "The Little Drummer Boy," and "The Christmas Song" all benefit nonetheless from Mancini's genius for timing and dynamics. Even the mundane "Frosty the Snowman" gets some new life breathed into him thanks to Mancini's arrangement, and "Carols for Another Christmas" is a good example of Mancini's hip restraint. Merry Mancini Christmas, while not the maestro at his best, still imparts some of that madcap, martini-era holiday spirit as only Mancini knew. --Steve Gdula

Not worth the effort.......2007-01-27
I just love Christmas music and I love Mancini's Pink Panther and others. I thought this might be a good addition to my collection and it turned out to be a dud. Nothing special at all.
Fabulous.......2006-02-23
This is the Christmas album you are always saying "who is this" when listening on the radio. Perfect for all ages.
Classic Christmas as you remember it.......2005-10-04
This album is for all those baby boomers out there who grew up listening to the great Mancini. Someone said this album was pedestrian. They couldn't have been farther from the truth! This will rekindle childhood memories of Christmas like it used to be. Pull up a chair by the fire, grab that warm apple cider, turn the Christmas lights on and enjoy!
Mancini is Magical.......2004-12-15
I come from a very large family and since the mid-sixties when my parents bought it we'd play this album during the holidays. We played it until you could hardly hear some of the songs without the crackling and skipping the LP's were notorious for. By the time it was totally inaudible the LP wasn't being made any longer. We were all crushed because our Christmas mainstay album was gone. (Particularly because we lost both parents some years ago within 2 months of each other and we always listened as a family to this album.) When the CD came out we were overjoyed to say the least. I ALWAYS cry as do all of us in my family when "Carol for Another Christmas" plays because it holds such dear memories of my parents listening to us massacre that song on our instruments EVERY SINGLE CHRISTMAS!!! But they always swore we played beautifully.
A Classic.......2002-07-13
Tasteful, traditional orchestral Christmas music. More importantly, "Carol for Another Christmas" may be the most beautiful Christmas composition of the 20th Century.

Customer Reviews:
For Fans of the Film, or Sakamoto, a Worthwhile Purchase.......2006-11-13
As with most soundtrack albums, you'll buy it because you really liked the film and want an aural souvenir of it. "The Sheltering Sky" certainly works in that regard. It even has the Lionel Hampton number used over the opening credits. Unfortunately, the tracks are not sequential, which lessens the souvenir value a bit, but it's still a good buy for lovers of the film or for fans of Ryuichi Sakamoto's music.
Absolutely Beautiful.......2005-11-14
This is a timeless, haunting soundtrack. One of Sakamoto's best, and thanks to a supporting cast of great music - this is truly a soundscape best heard in totality. Any fans of Sakamoto's work or even those who love movie soundtracks - you absolutely have to get this. Penetrating and atmospheric.
Stunning Sky.......2004-10-25
The Sheltering Sky is one of my favorite scores. The film itself is flawed but fascinating, and its score is one of its highlights. The Sheltering Sky Theme is so moving and haunting that it ranks up there with "Once Upon A Time In America" and "The Mission" as a brilliant theme music.
This soundtrack is hard to find but worth seeking if you love score music.
The one and only!.......2000-01-05
this Bertolucci movie was really beautiful and so is the soundtrack. It is simply brilliant & in my opinion Sakamoto's very best! A mixture of ancient sounds, slow strings, islamic chants and heartbreaking melodies, just BEAUTIFUL !
Buy it, it's a must! Rik

Customer Reviews:
Charm of Nostalgia.......2005-09-10
This LP used to be my favcorite, until one day it didn't seem cool and I pushed it to the back of my recvord cabinet with some other records I was ashamed of. They were trying too hard to be like the Stones is what I figured, and they weren't cutting it. Oh boy, how I wrong I was. But as it turned out, most of the records I was ashamed of loving then, have come back from the valley of shame and are now my favorites! Isn't it funny?
Before the renmastered reissue with the extra tracks, the final song on side B USED TO BE the instrumental "Melody for an Unknown Girl," heavy with saxes, a tune I thought the ultimate in romance, sort of like "Caroline No" was for the Beach Boys PET SOUNDS. I'd play it on my little mono player again and again. The needle would click, click, click after the last groove while I was lost in a silence that grew more tenuous and romantic with every minute that passed, while I thought of the way that eventually I would become a teenager and be out there falling in love every day and a half and breaking hearts and getting my heart broken too I suppose. It was the idea of the "unknown girl," tantalizingly mysterious in the mist of anticipation, parallel to the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" which my dad took me to see, which also broke my heart.
I liked KICKS then too, from a child's perspective the song was filled with an older boy's looking back to a time long past when "Kicks" weren't quite as hard to find as nowadays; I had regret that I was too young to live in that time--the hedonist's utopia, some archetypal time before the expulsion from Eden. If that sounds far fetched, the lyrics to verse 2 are all about the way the girl in the song is looking (through drugs I used to think) "for another piece of paradise." We're all looking for that time before our own births in which sin and death had not yet corrupted our innocence. Maybe that's why those old albums and the pop tracks they contained now have the place of pride on my iPod.
Rockin' Paul Revere.......2004-04-07
1966 was possibly the greatest year in rock & roll history. The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds", Bob Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde", "Revolver" by the Beatles, and "Face to Face" by the Kinks were all released in 1966. I add to that list"Midnight Ride" by Paul Revere & the Raiders. It was their third album for Columbia (fifth overall), and the first not to rely heavily on cover versions of other people's songs. "Kicks" and "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" were supplied by the songwriting teams of Mann-Weil and Boyce-Hart. Paul Revere and Mark Lindsay wrote six of the songs on the album, and one of the CD bonus tracks, "Shake it Up". Guitarist Drake Levin contributed "Ballad of a Useless Man" and collaborated with drummer Mike Smith ("There's Always Tomorrow") and bassist Phil Volk ("Get it On"). Most of the songs have the basic sound of the band playing together. Revere's Vox organ is prominent in the mix, and Levin's rhythmic guitar is unmistakeable. Also of note is the strong bass lines from Volk. 60's recordings usually buried bass guitar in the mix, unless it was a Motown record. Maybe the Raiders learned a few tricks from them. The clarity on this CD is eye opening. I've never heard "Kicks" sound as good as it does on this CD. "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" will have you forgetting all about the Monkees version - Mark growls out the lyrics like nobody's business! "Louie Go Home" is a killer Revere - Lindsay collaboration that should have been a single. It would have been a smash. "Take a Look at Yourself" is another killer rocker with strong lyrics. On the lighter side, there's Mark singing to the "Little Girl in the 4th Row" - some of the band members hated it, but Lindsay's teen fans loved it; "Melody for an Unknown Girl", an instrumental featuring Mark's sensitive sax; and "There She Goes", an up pop number with producer Terry Melcher on background vocals. The Raiders were to go on to make more sophisticated pop albums (with practically unlimited studio time as they desired), but it doesn't get any better than this: one of America's greatest bands rockin' it out with a great batch of songs.
Asombroso y olvidado rock norteamericano.......2004-02-23
A decent collection of what is basically Sixties dance music.......2003-06-16
If there was one hit group from the Sixties that I just did not get, it would be Paul Revere & The Raiders. I know they were the best selling American group in terms of fighting back against the British Invasion, a time when only the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were selling more albums, but I still think of them as the definitive B-level group form the period and off the top of my head I can never name any of their hits (always think of Mark Lindsay's "Arizona" and "Indian Reservation" from his solo career in the Seventies). All I really remember is seeing them dressed up in faux colonial uniforms and their reputation in the annals of rock history pretty much support the idea that I did not miss much. However, they were not a bad group, they were just not a great group and did not really have a great moment, that one super hit song on which to hang their reputations.
"Midnight Ride" is one of their better albums (good thing because this was the title the group was born to use sooner or later), helped by the fact that the group wrote most of the music and that all of the band members got in on the action. Lead singer Mark Lindsay turned in a decent ballad with "Little Girl in the Fourth Row" (there are two versions on this reissue album) but the two best songs here are "Kicks" by Mann & Will and "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" by Boyce & Hart (the version by the Monkees is better). Ultimately, if I had to define Paul Revere & The Raiders I would say they made dance music. These are not songs to sing along with; you just get out on the dance floor and move your feet to the music. The bonus tracks add a bit more rock 'n' roll to the album, but those are clearly not what defined the group's sound at this point (it would change noticeably in 1967 when Drake Levin split the band. Levin and another former band member Phil Volk put together the notes for this reissue album and offer up some fan-friendly nostalgic perspectives on the glory days of their youth. The bonus tracks and the notes make me skew my rating higher than I would have gone otherwise.
another favorite !.......2001-11-26
I know...I have a lot of favorite Raider CDs...but this one has to be a top 5 favorite.
From '66, it was their 3rd LP for Columbia, and a big transition, as 9 of the 11 tunes were written by them...the exceptions: The terrific Mann/Weill "Kicks", which was a big hit for them, and the Boyce/Hart "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone", which The Monkeys did a cover of and had a hit with...but this is the original version, and it's a knockout.
Drake contributed "Ballad of a Useless Man", which is a compassionate look at the homeless (and in the '60s this wasn't a common point of view), along with 2 other songs, and the other 5 are by Mark and Paul. Perhaps the most interesting musically on the entire CD is "All I Really Need is You", with its many time/rhythm changes...it ends with the lovely instrumental, "Melody for an Unknown Girl", with Mark doing a smooth sax solo and the spoken parts.
The bonus tracks: "Shake it Up", another Mark/Paul piece that's a rousing instrumental, and the Italian version of "Little Girl in the 4th Row". I feel the inclusion of "SS 396" and "Corvair Baby", which were recorded earlier ('65) and are in a "Beach Boys style", though neat songs, just don't fit in with the mood of the rest of this CD, and are kind of a jarring finish to an otherwise unique and excellent recording...(...)
