Customer Reviews:
Deserves the credit it is given.......2006-05-09
Rage Against the Machine is all about singles, EP's, bootlegs and, really, a live band. Even though there studio releases are great, nothing beats a live Rage Against the Machine show. Well, since they have been disbanded for 6 years now, so the closest you can get now is Audioslave (no thanks). Anyway, whenever Rage Against the Machine releases a single, the import versions contain a bunch of live tracks, b-sides, live covers and even a music video here or there. These singles are available on Amazon, eBay, or maybe you can get lucky with a small, more underground record store. Never try chain stores, because the chance of them having an imported single from 7-15 years ago is slim to none. As for "Sleep Now In The Fire, Pt. 1", I have to say that these live songs and the original are, of course, great. But, that is a given when it comes to Rage Against the Machine.
The single, which is the second one off of their monster "The Battle Of Los Angeles", which was released in 1999 as Rage's third studio album. This is the infamous "Sleep Now In The Fire". The track starts off with the main riff, which is one of the coolest riffs Tom has ever made up. The thing about this song is it is so catchy from the start that you have to continue to listen to it. It's just that good. The verse is really Zack just doing a slow rap, or just talking, and the lyrics are very political, of course. The music in the verses is nothing special, but the chorus saves the whole song. This single was propelled to new heights on mainstream radio rock charts, and so was "The Battle Of Los Angeles". This song is a fan favorite, and just one of the many great songs released off of their last album with original songs. (Renegades was next, but it was a cover album). It is also one of my favorite Rage songs, and a live favorite as well.
Now for the extra's. Track 2 is "Guerrilla Radio", probably their biggest mainstream gem (and a great song) performed live. Of curse, the live performance is great as well. Guerrilla Radio owns live, and I am glad that they put it on here. Another live fan favorite, "Bulls On Parade" from their 1996 sophomore album "Evil Empire" is also one of my favorite songs. It sounds great live with that scratchy riff and Zack de la Rocha's sheer anger at the world. Another great song performed live. Of course, "Freedom" is live. Every Rage thing has a live performance of "Freedom", which is from their first album released in 1992. A personal favorite of mine because it brings back so many memories, and I can't help to love that sheer anger and aggression at the end (even though the vocals live are a little annoying). There is a live version of "Sleep Now In The Fire", stuck in there, and this is the best I have heard them perform on any live CD's or bootlegs. Another very good live track.
Yeah. So, even if you own the legendary "Battle Of Los Angeles", you have to pick up this single. This is essential if you are a Rage Against the Machine fan, and even if you are a fan of rap-metal, nu-metal or 90's alternative rock, this band and song are for you. Nothing beats a live Rage concert, but these live songs are above-average. Also, look for their bootlegs. This album should not cost you much used, and it is easier to come by. If you could find "Sleep Now In The Fire, Pt.2", then you get more live tracks and a music video. I am also going to clear up this issue with this single. There are many versions, but this is clearly the best one. The live songs sound great, it is easier to get and there is more of a track selection, even though these songs are on "The Battle Of Mexico City" DVD. These singles are out of print, so pick them up while you still have a chance, because it is worth it even for the higher prices that they charge for rare, discontinued singles, especially imports.
Unreleased Live Material Worth Having.......2004-12-29
All four live tracks on this release are from the DVD "The Battle of Mexico City." They are previously unreleased on CD and not from "Live & Rare" or "Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium." I give this a five star because it's worth collecting the unreleased live material.
What an awesome song........2000-07-26
Sleep Now in the Fire is such a great song. You will love it.

Customer Reviews:
Great Album, Great Band with a long history.......2006-09-03
It's not very often that a 40-something metalhead like me gets to discover a great new band that has a back catalogue which spans two decades. Somehow, miraculously, Rage avoided my radar until recently, and I'm glad it did. It's been quite a pleasant surprise these past several months as I've acquired five Rage albums (Trapped!, Missing Link, VIII, Unity and Soundchaser) and the 20th Anniversary DVD.
What a kick in the arse it is, hearing such an old-school thrash/power/proggish blend that tickles my eardrums to orgasm like this. Add in a cool symphonic/orchestral period in the late 90s and Rage is singing what I want to hear; heavy metal diversity and creativity, carried throughout the long haul of their career.
Overall, Rage is probably best described as a blend of thrash and power metal, with progressive tendencies. These guys aren't afraid of experimenting (including being one of the first metal bands to cohesively play with an orchestra for a whole album in 1998) without straying too far off the beaten path of what defines Rage. The band is rather speedy for the most part, but not in a repetitive way. The powerhouse tempos and beats of the drummer are constantly changing within the upper mid-tempo to middle speed-metal range. The music is very well written, super heavy, yet melodic and saturated in catchy riffs, guitar solos and vocal melodies.
The singing is most people's complaint about Rage (the few that have complaints), as founder Peavy Wagner tends to be too rough around the edges for fans of the higher-pitched "clean" singing, and not rough enough for fans of extreme vocals. But the vox fit the music perfectly because Rage's style could be described the same way; it's halfway between melodic and extreme.
Vocal camparisons make me think of Rolf, the singer for Running Wild, and to a lesser extent Udo of Accept. But I prefer Peavy's vox because he has a very pleasant "mellow" voice for the more melodic and acoustical side of Rage. Although Peavy sounds nothing like Jon Oliva of Savatage, his vocals compliment the music in the same way.
Soundchaser (2003) was the album that introduced me to Rage, and it has already earned a gold pedastal in my Hallowed Hall of Fame. These songs stick in my head for days, and for that I'm very thankful. You should be too.
If you're an old school metal/thrash/power metal fan, don't miss this album. Soundchaser is a true work of art, a masterpiece of music.
Recommended for fans of: Savatage, Running Wild, Accept, Iced Earth, Sabaton, Cage
* * * G E T I T * * *.......2004-12-31
This is what good musicians do. They love the music they play and they show it. It also helps when they can play their respective instruments like these guys can and when they can do it all as one. These guys are artists in the real meaning of the word. This is metal that you simply can not ignore. So don't. Get this CD and if you are a real metal head I can assure you that this will be a food source for your metal hunger for days.
One of the top ten of 2003.......2004-05-04
Rage's "Peavy" Wagner is the most underrated songwriter in metal today. This one man has gone through so many different styles of metal over the years that it's become very difficult to define exactly what kind of band Rage is. However, you can be certain that whenever you pick up a Rage album, it will be GOOD! Soundchaser, Peavy's latest offering, continues where "Unity" and "Welcome to the Other Side" left off, combining Mike Terrana and Victor Smolski's Progressive Metal styles of playing with Peavy's mixture of Thrash, Power, and True Metal. The newest result is the best of this era of Rage, "Soundchaser" is a rock opera with serious attitude and technical power. The title character has been the band's mascot ever since their famous third album "Perfect Man", now, we finally get to hear his story told through intense riffing, incredible drums, and lyrics that not only impress the ear but are quite fun to sing along with. Soundchaser is a must buy for any Metal fan.
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-03-03
Now this is good music. There is not a single song hear that is even close to being poor. It's fast, powerful, melodic, catchy as hell and in my opinion is the best album of 2003.
Victor Smolski is completely amazing on guitar, Peavey Wagner is a genius songwriter with a very melodic, unique voice and Mike Terrana is a powerful drummer.
I can't speak highly enough of this album. For what it is, it's almost perfect, and what is it? I guess you'd call it a cross between power metal and thrash. It's a bit thrashier than their privious album, Unity, and about on par with it as far as quality is concerned and that's a good thing because Unity was awesome.
Just buy it.
you can't go wrong.......2004-02-20
This album rocks pure and simple. Its as good if not better than The Missing Link. I wish the new Iced Earth was as good as this record. This is power metal at its best. Peavy has a very unique voice and he is in top form here. The guitar sound is awesome and the drums kick butt. There is not one bad song on this thing it rocks start to finish no filler all killer. If you never heard Rage before buy this. Its way better than anything Iron Maiden has done in a long time.

This cd is in my opinion the best Rage cd yet. Every song on this cd work together well and make it one of the greatest cds of the 90s. The extra song is No Shelter, which is a great song, but I don't know if it's worth 10 more bucks.

...Note that the 'bonus tracks' arent Australia only. 'Maggies Farm' and 'How I Could Just Kill a Man' are also on the U.S. version(they just arent listed as tracks). Since this one is alot more dough than the U.S. version, and they are basically the same, you would want that version instead.

MOLOTOV wipes the floor with r.a.t.m........2005-01-28
MOLOTOV is the only Real Rap/Metal Band out there that really matters, they are from Mexico but belive me they are a million times better and more raw than that electronica based mainstream "Rage against the machine".
Want proof? listen to their album "Donde jugaran las ninas" and judge for yourself.
Pretty Good.......2004-09-01
This CD, along with the others in this series offers a wealth of information on specific bands/artists, in this case, Rage Against the Machine. Although there is little music, and that music is not by Rage, the auditory biograhpy is extremely in depth and very informative. This CD is a must-have for ALL Rage fans, and fans of the genre. Also, the quotes from band members and commentary also offer much apreciated interpretations of De La Rocha's encryptive lyrics. The CD could be improved only by using tha band's music, or music inspired by the band, in the background.
A Good Basic Biography Of Rage.......2002-11-20
This is a fairly well put together basic biography of Rage Against the Machine intended for fans who wish to learn more about them. Although it doesn't contain many new facts that will interest hardcore fans, its good for new to moderate ones who just want a general overview. Some especially interesting tracks are Chicano Child, a breif overview of Zack's fascinating childhood, and Saturday Night Censor, which is about Rage's brief appearance on Saturday Night Live. I recommend this biography to new to moderate Rage fans, although no hardcore fan's Rage collection is complete without it.
poster.......2000-08-22
Can someone please tell me if there is a picture or poster included with this cd. If so, can u describe it.
just a biography.......2000-02-20
I ordered this cd not knowing exactly what it was. There is no music on this cd, it is strictly an unauthorized biography that is not endorsed by the band. It's all stuff most rage fans know anyway. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money. Use it to buy another rage import that has the track listing posted. If you want a little insight into the political side of the band, purchase the Rage Against the Machine video (authorized and endorsed by the band) if you haven't already.

Good follow-up to "The Missing Link".......2005-01-28
This anniversary album is not a best-of compilation. It's indeed a compilation, but of rarities, unreleased demos, newly recorded and arranged songs, some of them forgotten in the vaults. All these songs were put togother in order to make another regular rage album, with the special value that it's the ten-year-anniversary album. It all sounds like a new album, with the typical rage songs, but experimenting a little bit. After the great "The missing link" I'm sure the band had a really hard job in releasing another album that matched the quality of compositions of the before-mentioned. "Ten Years..." is not as good as "The Missing Link" but it's a proper follow-up, with some moments of superb songwriting, like the opener "Vertigo" or the changing "She killed and smiled", which I considered instantly Rage classics. You'll find in this record plenty of different rhythms and tempos. Fast brutal and melodic songs, mid tempo, slow songs. The tenth song, "The blow in a row", is a '94 medley in which you'll find songs from all Rage albums. Among them, you'll surely recognize classics such as "Suicide", "Down by law", Don't fear the winter" and many more. This album was originally recorded in '94, when the band had that rusty and archaic song, typical of the bands of those years, especially the drumming. But, anyways, it's a great album.
The new 2002 edition features some bonus material as well. "Brainsucker" is an ultra fast song, done as a joke, like it's explained in the booklet, originally available only in the japanese edition. The rest of the bonus songs are live tracks. Three of them taken from the "Power of Metal" live compilation. One of them only available previously in the japanese edition of this album. The last live track is unreleased.
"Ten Years in Rage" won't eclipse "The Missling Link", but it's a great album, that all Rage fans should have. If you can, buy the 2002 edition.
PS:This album contains 10 songs, not 9. The song missing is "The Unknown, the seventh one.
