Fantastic Skynyrd CD.......2007-03-08
I love this CD! It gives me happy feet, what can I say. I play it often as I never tire of hearing Skynyrd classic hits.
Pronounced Leonard Skinnard.......2006-12-27
I'm not a fan, but if you are, this is a good collection. I like the Allman Brothers better (and yes, I know they are a blues band). I bought this to learn "You've Got That Right" for my band. If the Eagles or The James Gang are considered Southern Rock, and that is your odyssey, check them out first. Sacrilege, I know.
The Definitive Collection.......2006-12-18
This CD is all you really need from Lynyrd Skynrd. It contains 14 of their greatest songs and each one is a classic. There are no fillers on this album. It's filled with hit after hit of some of the best southern rock ever recorded. All of the songs are classics as I said but one song that I'm happy that they included in this collection is "All I Can Do Is Write About It" (acoustic version). This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The words are simple and yet deeply moving and powerful. Listen to this song carefully and it will touch your heart like it did mine. The CD opens with what is probably one of the most famous songs in the classic rock pantheon "Sweet Home Alabama". This one is considered to be a rock n'roll anthem and I completely agree. Overall this is an album that every fan of classic rock should not be without. This is Lynyrd Skynyrd at their very best and beyond.
great cd.......2006-11-10
able to listen to the whole cd without having to skip any songs, great cd!!
Still Rockin' After All These Years.......2006-11-03
Music is like art.....I don't know much about it, but I know what I like, and I like "All Time Greatest Hits"...a lot!! It's classic sing-along standards to which we all know the words. Just like on the old Dick Clark American Bandstand shows..."It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it". Of course you can mop floors to it, and drive to it, and have the other drivers wonder why you look so spastic, but best of all you can just enjoy the songs. To a southern girl.....uh, old broad.....this is true southern rock and roll. I was rockin' with Lynyrd Skynyrd back in the '70's and I'm still rocking with them 30 years later.

Where the Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker had a more restrained, accomplished rock sound, Florida's Lynyrd Skynyrd took another approach, evoking images of whiskey, Confederate flags, hard luck, and greasy dive bars in their music. The like-minded Molly Hatchet and .38 Special couldn't come close to matching the lyrical talent and natural-born rock-and-boogie abilities of Skynyrd. And, of course, no other band can lay claim to the most-requested song in the history of rock music, the anthemic "Free Bird," the focal point of this, their 1973 debut. Aside from spawning countless tomes of bad poetry by pockmarked 15-year-olds everywhere with "Free Bird," they demonstrated a mastery of the rock ballad with the time-tested "Tuesday's Gone," another highlight of this notable first offering. --Lorry Fleming

SKYNYRD'S FIRST AND... BEST ! .......2007-07-13
Make no mistake about it, when it comes to rating Lynyrd Skynyrd's studio albums, their debut, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd (1973) cannot be topped by any of the others. The album features the legendary Free Bird, which, of course, is the greatest song in the history of rock (if you ask this southern reviewer), the anthems Simple Man and Tuesday's Gone, and the honky tonk rocking classic Gimme Three Steps. Every one of these songs are the best that classic rock has to offer, and they're right up there in the top category. I Ain't The One and Poison Whiskey are street tough rockers with triple attack guitar excellance and Ronnie Van Zandt's indomitable vocals. Mississippi Kid presents a short break from the southern rock with some acoustic folk-blues. They get personal and political with the bluesy Things Goin' On.
Have you ever been down in the ghetto?
Have you ever felt the cold wind blow?
If you don't know what I mean,
Won't you stand up and scream,
Because there are things goin' on that you don't know!
Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd is a great classic southern rock album that includes some great classic southern rock songs. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a smart, street tough, and talented band that has an extraordinary ability to emotionally connect with their fans in a profound way, and those fans would stand and fight for them, if it came down to it. That's a rare commodity in the music world that not many others can claim.

Skynyrd's First Album.......2007-05-08
If you are into classic rock, southern rock, or country, you have to like this album. This particular CD comes with several bonus tracks that are some of (in my opinion) Lynyrd Skynyrd's best work. You need this album if you don't already have it. If you have a version of this album without the bonus tracks, this is still worth every penny.

With staples such as "Sweet Home Alabama," "Workin' for MCA," and the J.J. Cale-penned "Call Me the Breeze," Skynyrd's second captures the Jacksonville, Florida, band at the height of its powers, coming off the success of "Free Bird" and "Gimme Three Steps" from their 1973 debut. Backed by a tight rhythm section and the mighty three-guitar attack of Allen Collins, Ed King, and Gary Rossington, singer Ronnie Van Zant (credited in the album notes for "Vocals, J&B") turns in a legendary performance on the urgent blues ballad "I Need You," the cautionary "The Needle and the Spoon," and "The Ballad of Curtis Loew," the story of a young white boy sitting at the feet of an old black Dobro master. Along with Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd and One More from the Road, Second Helping remains Skynyrd's finest hour. --James Rotondi

Dismissed by some as the redneck Led Zeppelin, yet beloved by a faithful and grassroots following for just that reason, Lynyrd Skynyrd sailed above it all--even the dark tragedy that befell them less than a year after this landmark live set was recorded in Atlanta. A triple-platinum perennial in its classic-rock heyday, this 25th anniversary edition has been digitally restored and authentically remixed on vintage '70s equipment to great effect. The band's performances have also been resequenced to their original running order to accurately recreate the Skynyrd '70s live experience.
Even Allen Collins's later-overdubbed intro to their ubiquitous epic "Free Bird" has been restored with the original. Cameron Crowe's original notes are also here, long before Almost Famous, and he insightfully puts the album in its proper historical perspective. But the real premium here is the almost full disc of bonus cuts, including previously unreleased versions of "Simple Man," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "Workin' for MCA," "I Ain't the One," "Searching," and other alternate versions recorded during the Atlanta stand ("Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Crossroads," "Free Bird"), but until now scattered elsewhere in the Skynyrd catalog. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Allmans apples, Skynyrd oranges.......2007-06-07
This is Skynyrd at their peak, I will argue this was the best rock band on the planet at the moment this album was recorded.
I could partake in the Allman v. Skynyrd argument for eternity. I'm a Sourthern musician myself, and I think there's room for both bands and both albums (as well as many of their other works) in any collection.
I find it intriguing that the aforementioned Skynyrd ripper listed later Black Crowes and Widespread Panic albums as better than Skynyrd live; the "Allman wannabe" label is a much better fit for those latter-day jam bands. All the guitar players I've ever known (including Al Kooper, who I don't know but who I respect the hell out of, considering his pedigree) thought the Skynyrd axe men were very progressive for their day.
The Allman-Skynyrd comparison is apt only from 10,000 feet. Yes, they came from the same area, and many of the influences were similar. But Skynyrd followed the more modern English blues-rock paradigm (see: Cream, Free), and they were more of a pop-song-type band (in the gunslinging, Allmans tradition, of course).
I would even venture to say that Skynyrd followed in the Allmans' footsteps. Indeed, Brother Duane is up there with Hendrix, methinks, and I find the Allmans' work during his lifetime unimpeachable and some of the best modern music ever made.
It gets iffy for both bands after their key members passed. Skynyrd was poised to become even bigger and better with the addition of Steve Gaines -- listen to the guitar work on "Street Survivors." And Ronnie Van Zant knew what the hell he was doing. Meanwhile, everyone knows what happened to Greg and Co. after Duane's untimely death. (I think I sense a pattern here.)
I saw both bands in the space of a year in '75-'76 (including all 3 nights at Fox for Skynyrd), and there was no comparison at that point. Allman biographer Scott Freeman considers that '75 Allman tour to be the band's nadir, and the Skynyrd boys were going for the gold about 9 months later.
I don't think any other Southern band has come close since then. . .
Great Live Album!.......2007-03-19
This is one of the best all-time live albums in rock history and it depicts Lynyrd Skynyrd at their peak. These songs never get old and are just as great if you are at a party or listening alone!
Capturing the essence.......2007-03-08
Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From the Road" captures the bands innovative sound live during the group's ascendancy. Their following during this time became more than a "cult" following and after having played on the road for years, their sound became tight and smooth. They could replicate the studio sound quite easily with some improvisation to boot.
Buy This CD!.......2007-02-02
Having seen Skynyrd blow the Who right off the stage in 1973 this album audibly shows what they could do. You can feel it. Southern Shmuthern! It's Rock and Roll at it's best. If you didn't know where they were from you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. People get hung up on this southern rock thing. BFD!! These guys worked to get where they got and are anything but mediocre. I've read the same thing about the Beatles.. that they were mediocre at best! Yeah right!!
This album throws you back in the seat from the moment you drop the needle in the groove. I've worn out vinyl copies, thrown many 8 track copies out the window of my car, more vinyl and cassette and have the original release of this on CD (that sucks) and now this. If you are going to buy only one Skynyrd album, make it this one. They never put on a bad show!! Not even the lineup that is playing today!! They can still smoke any band right off the stage!!
One more from the road Lynyrd Skynyrd.......2006-11-06
Great live album. I bought this on vinyl many years ago and still enjoy it today. Most live recordings are not very clear and leave a lot to be desired. This is one of the exceptions. I would strongly recommend this to any Skynyrd fan.

Lynyrd Skynyrd had already fulfilled a good deal of its promise on definitive Southern-rock albums such as Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd and the live One More From the Road when they stepped up their ambition a few more notches for this October 1977 release. Fueled by new member Steve Gaines, the Florida band produced its best album. Gaines, Gary Rossington, and Allen Collins interlocked on guitars as if they'd learned it all in the womb together, while singer Ronnie Van Zant came up with his most evocative lyrics yet. The shadow of death he detected on "That Smell" was closer than perhaps even he thought, however: three days after the record's appearance in stores, he was killed along with five others in a Mississippi crash of the group's tour plane. Street Survivors remains as a classic of American guitar rock. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
THE CLASSIC LYNYRD SKYNYRD'S FINAL ACT........2007-04-29
Lynyrd Skynyrd's Street Survivors was released on October 17, 1977. Three days later, on October 20, three members of the band (Ronnie Van Zandt, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines) were killed in a plane crash in Mississippi while touring. Street Survivors is different, in a number of ways, from Skynyrd's earlier albums. Steve Gaines had taken up residence as third guitarist in the band's three guitar lineup. Also a vocalist and songwriter, Steve's contributions would be more than just instrumental. Another difference was the band's collective state of mind. Playing music in the rowdy beer joints of Jacksonville, Florida for just enough money to survive, was just a memory now. Lynyrd Skynyrd were southern rock legends by 1977, playing their special brand of that music on the world stage. The album's first two songs, What's Your Name and That Smell, reveal the band's mental state at the time. What's Your Name is a Lynyrd Skynyrd classic. A song about their rowdy life on the road, it has a familiar guitar riff and lead guitar solo that Skynyrd is famous for, and tells a story of drinking, fighting, and motel room sex (just another day at the office). That Smell kicks things up another notch. It's both a regret and a warning of how drug and alcohol abuse can destroy lives. With Van Zandt singing like he means it, The Honkettes providing impassioned backing vocals, and a fantastic triple attack lead guitar assault, this is one of Skynyrd's best songs ever. I Know A Little is another one of their best songs. It's high energy rock and roll boogie woogie with lightning fast guitar, a slide guitar, and a great Billy Powell piano solo. If this song doesn't get you moving, check for a pulse. You Got That Right is another Skynyrd classic about life on on the road with Lynyrd Skynyrd. This song features something new from the band, dual lead singers. Van Zandt and Gaines trade lines on the verses, and join in to sing harmony on the chourus.
I like to drink and dance all night,
If it comes to a fix I ain't afraid to fight,
You Got That Right, You Got That Right,
You Got That Right, You sure got that right!
That can't be anybody but Lynyrd Skynyrd! One More Time and I Never Dreamed are slower songs, more like ballads, and both have trademark Skynyrd guitar in them. Their cover of Merle Haggard's Honky Tonk Nite Time Man is high energy country complete with dobro and references to Merle, "Here's one for Bakersfield!" and "Sounds like Roy!"(Roy Nichols, Haggard's long time lead guitarist). The album closes with Steve Gaines singing the bluesy Ain't No Good Life. Great vocals, great guitar, and great Lynyrd Skynyrd. The first two bonus cuts, Georgia Peaches and Sweet Little Missy are good, but the last three, which are lesser versions of songs on the original album, are just curiosities. Street Survivors is a very good, energetic Lynyrd Skynyrd album, with great guitar work all over it. While not streetfighter raw and ready as their earlier albums, it's a rowdy testimonial to the life of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1977. Sadly, soon after it was released, three of their best would leave our world forever.
An Excellent, Though Tragic, Final Album.......2007-02-11
But now it's common knowledge. A mere three days after the triumphant release of one of their greatest albums, STREET SURVIVORS, Lynyrd Skynyrd would be struck down at their peak by the hands of fate. That we would never again hear from Ronnie Van Zant is a true tragedy, but we can take some comfort in knowing that he went down doing what he loved, traveling and singing his song, and that the band left us with this excellent final masterpiece.
Much praise has been heaped on this album since long before I started reviewing, with undoubtedly more to come, but I have listened to this time and again over the years, and am willing to stand by all the accolades. STREET SURVIVORS is a great album, and in many ways could be called Skynyrd's masterpiece.
From the get-go, STREET SURVIVORS establishes itself as something of a 'fresh start' for Skynyrd. Gone is the road-weariness and exhaustion of GIMME BACK MY BULLETS; in its place is a renewed sense of vitality and creative energy. "What's Your Name" and "You Got That Right" are the most energetic southern boogies Skynyrd has cut since SECOND HELPING, while "That Smell" grabs the dark edginess of "Saturday Night Special." On the flip side, "I Never Dreamed" is one of Ronnie's most poignant and accomplished ballades, as is "One More Time," a revival of a forgotten early gem.
Of course, while Ronnie's songwriting is the anchor of Skynyrd's sound, it wouldn't come to life without the excellent musicians Van Zant surrounded himself with. At the forefront is Steve Gaines, the rookie whose slick guitar picking goes a long way in giving this album its strength and energy. Gaines also proves to be a solid songwriter, collaborating with Ronnie on some of the albums highlights, and even contributing a few of his own songs, not least of which is the excellent honkey-tonk-meets-blues number "Ain't No Good Life." Meanwhile, Rossington and Collins are clearly inspired by the new guy, as their solos here are as fresh and captivating as they've ever been. And, of course Billy Powell submits some outstanding saloon style piano, especially on "Honkey Tonk Night Time Man," while Artimus and Leon manage the task of keeping the beat.
Really, praise of this album at this point is superfluous. But in this case, I feel compelled to contribute my two cents anyway. This is an excellent album, no doubt one of Skynyrd's best. And if the original band had to go out, at least they managed to go out on top. Highly recommended.
From ascendant rise to fiery crash.......2007-01-12
It was tragic that just as Lynyrd Skynyrd was taking off as a group their propeller driven plane crashed in a southern swamp. Who knows how far the band would've gone or how popular they would've become? "Street Survivors" gives us a hint of how good they were and how good they could be.
Lynyrd Skynyrd + Steve Gaines = Aah, what could have been..........2007-01-12
This album is a bittersweet reminder of how much more the band had to offer with the contributions of new member Steve Gaines. "I Know A Little" and "You Got That Right" were a couple of the songs wrote/cowrote for Street Survivors by Gaines. He was the only member besides Ronnie to sing lead on a Skynyrd record ("Ain't No Good Life.")
The rerelease of this CD includes interesting alternate versions of "You Got That Right" and "I Never Dreamed."
Not as good as it's said to be.......2006-11-12
Before I get a lot of negative votes for not bowing to this album, let me say some days I like it but others I put it down. I believe it's slightly overrated because it was released days before the band's chartered plane fell into a Mississippi swamp. Morbidness should not blind people's opinions but I guess it does.
The new package is nice, especially to get original cover back, that was changed right after the plane crash. Also the liner notes are very interesting.
This is definitely a new Skynyrd, partly due to the label's pressures so the group would write short pop songs and also thanks to big Steve Gaines' influence. He is involved in much of the playing and songwriting (Read the credits and listen to the guitar solos and you'll know what I'm talking about). As great player as it was, his songwriting style was more country-flavoured than Skynyrd should have ever been - I know A Little comes to mind. There's some great solos in it and the intro is amazing but the song doesn't sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Now with the rest of the songs:
-What's your name? As catchy as it is, I admit it's a guilty pleasure for me. Sadly that the line 'I'll come back here next year. I wanna see you again' became an epitaph, in view of what happened on 20th October 1977. A thing that's always caught my attention is how the horns that can be heard in the song aren't credited at all. Perhaps somebody should explain this.
-That smell. The best tune on the cd. Written by Collins and Van Zant, the lyrics deal with booze and substance abuse, something the band knew too much about. THe chorus are repeated way too many times yet the lyrics and guitar solos more than make up for it.
-One more time. Strange that they decided to rescue this track from the Muscle Shoals album recorded in 1971. The song itself ain't bad. You can tell by listening to Ronnie's voice that the song is not from 1977. Not that his voice was damaged or anything.
-I know a little. Written by Steve Gaines. Commented above, let me add I'll always like a song with Billy Powell performing on it.
-You got that right. One of the new style songs I most dig. Gotta love that false end after the final chorus.
-I never dreamed. A fine ballad though the lyrics are a bit male chauvinist. Not that I am a feminist either but get what I say.
-Honky tonk night-time man. A country blues song by Merle Haggard, greatly covered by Skynyrd.
-Ain't no good life. The other song only composed by Steve Gaines, a bluesy effort that is actually nice. I love the blues.
There are five bonus tracks on this reissue, none of which are particularly outstanding:
-Georgia Peaches will be known by those that like me, got the Legend album way back then. Feels a bit unfinished because it fades away as soon Billy's piano solo begins.
-Sweet Little Missy. To me, the best out-take. Also included on the Legend album, it's a nice song with great solos by Steve and Billy.
-You got that right. Easy to see why this wasn't included on the original album. It's somewhat lackluster compared to the album version.
-I never dreamed. Same as the other version but without drums.
-Jacksonville kid. Over the Honky tonk night time man arrangement, Ronnie sings an alternative (and autobiographical) lyric about his hometown, his troubles and the new musical trends, like disco, that he disliked. I have to agree with him.
Overall, not a throwaway but not the timeless classic is said to be either. If you're new to this great band (and I do mean the band that died in 1977, not the pathetic travesty that tours under the Skynyrd moniker today) get any of the earlier albums, especially Pronounced... and Second Helping.
3/5.

The members of Lynyrd Skynyrd played by their own set of rules. Fiercely defensive of their Southern heritage, Ronnie Van Zant and company reflexively lashed out when they thought they'd been slurred. Hence "Sweet Home Alabama," their retort to Neil Young's shame-on-Dixie "Alabama." (Young loved Skynyrd's screed, even though it lambasted him by name.) On the other hand, "Saturday Night Special" took on handguns; it's hard to imagine a contemporary band with a redneck-rock following taking a similar pro-gun-control stand. This two-disc overview presents a band with a broader agenda than one might imagine. Yes, this is state-of-the-'70s electric boogie, but it's three-guitar-strong rock with genuine subject matter. Fans will already have the likes of "Free Bird" (here presented in studio and concert settings) and "I Know a Little," but baubles such as the previously unreleased "Comin' Home" and the rare B-side "Mr. Banker" add to this collection's appeal, as does the lengthy liner essay. --Steven Stolder

Loved it, Loved it, Loved it !!!!.......2007-01-09
I didn't think I was a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan but after listening to the CD I'm hooked. Free Bird (studio and the live version) was just awesome.
With all the hits it has on it, it is a great CD to have.
One of the BEST!!!.......2006-08-28
This is one of the best Skynyrd cd's out there. If you like Metallica then that explains you ignorance! Then again I'm sure you can't be older than 18. FYI...a true music lover loves ALL music, you're just a little boy who likes music.
A must for those just starting out on Lynyrd Skynyrd.......2006-08-16
This 2-disc compilation of Lynyrd Skynyrd's library of songs is a very good collection of tracks for those just starting out on this most American of rock bands. Though Lynyrd Skynyrd may not have had the virtuoso guitar playing that The Allman Brothers band had (and which band does) or the heavy, southern blues-rock sound of Creedence Clearwater Revival, what they did have was the songwriting of its great frontman Ronnie Van Zant.
Lynyrd Skynyrd took the dueling lead guitar style pioneered by Thin Lizzy and perfected by The Allman Brothers Band's Duane Allman and Dicky Betts, and did them one better by having three lead guitarists in Allen Collins, Ed King and Gary Rossington. This gave Lynyrd Skynyrd a distinct overdriven blues-rock sound that when mixed with true Southern rock style made the band the definitive Southern rock band. This compilation includes their classic track "Sweet Home Alabama" and one of the most played power ballads (Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" being first and foremost) in "Free Bird" (both the album and even longer live concert version). Other tracks I'd like to point out are "The ballad of Curtis Loew", "Comin' Home", and "Simple Man".
This collection really doesn't have a bad track to it. It's a very good starting off point for anyone just starting to listen to this great Southern Rock band. Those needing to listen to the bands other songs would then be free to check out their full albums.

Excellent career-spanning Lynyrd Skynyrd package.......2007-02-22
THE BAND: The early era (prior to the '77 plane crash) includes Ronnie Van Zant (vocals)*, Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar)*, Steve Gaines (guitar)*, Ed King (guitar), Billy Powell (piano), Leon Wilkeson (bass), Larry Junstrum (bass), Bob Burns (drums), and Artimus Pyle (drums). The later era band (1980's - present) includes Johnny Van Zant (vocals), Rickey Medlocke (guitar), Hughie Thomasson (guitar), Randall Hall (guitar), Ean Evans (bass), Owen Hale (drums), etc. * deceased
THE DISC(S): (2003) Thirty tracks on two discs clocking in at approximately 152 total minutes (77+ minutes on disc-1, and 74+ on disc-2). Included with the discs is a 22-page booklet containing song titles/credits, a 12-page intro to the band covering good times and bad, numerous band photos, and what songs came from which albums and the year released. Songs range from 1973-2003, though the 2 unreleased songs are from 1970 (prior to Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut). Digitally remastered sound. Label - UTV Records / MCA.
ALBUM REPRESENTATION: Pronounced (4 songs), Second Helping (4), Nuthin' Fancy (1), Street Survivors (4), First And Last (2), One More From The Road (2), Southern By The Grace Of God (3), Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 (1), The Last Rebel (1), Endangered Species (1), Twenty (1), Lyve From Steel Town (1), Edge Of Forever (1), Vicious Cycle (1), Box Set (1), Unreleased (2).
COMMENTS: There are numerous Skynyrd compilations out there... "All Time Greatest Hits", "Gold & Platinum", "Essential", "Skynyrd's Innyrds", "Gold", "20th Century Masters", "Ultimate Collection", "Best Of The Rest", "Box Set", this "30th Anniversary" collection, and a few others. For me, this "30th Anniversary" set is the best career-spanning collection to date on the market. THE GOOD: Lots of music. All the staples are here - "Sweet Home Alabama", "Tuesday's Gone", "Gimme Three Steps", "Free Bird", "Saturday Night Special", "Call Me The Breeze", "Workin' For MCA", "Simple Man", "What's Your Name", "That Smell", "You Got That Right", etc. All the songs on disc-1 are early era tracks featuring Ronnie Van Zant on vocals. Disc-2 is a mix of early and late era songs. Extensive liner notes containing some good inside info and great vintage photos... only thing wrong - no song lyrics. 6 live tracks featuring old and new band members... two songs from pre '77, and four songs live from the 80's and 90's. Digitally remastered sound is crisp. THE NOT SO GOOD: Most compilations are not without flaws, and "Thyrty" is no exception. The faults here are minor but still worth mentioning. I strongly feel chronological order was needed here - a 30 year career proves deserving and it would show the band's sound evolution over the past four decades. Only a few songs missing that should have been included - "The Needle And The Spoon", "On The Hunt", "Ain't No Good Life" and "Don't Ask Me No Questions". Only one track from "Nuthin' Fancy"? The two unreleased tracks are decent, but by no means classic - they should have been placed at the end of disc-2... not in the beginning of disc-1 (and creating a poor start to a long listen). In fact, I'd have no issue had the 10+ minute "Blues Medley" been omitted and a few of the other missing songs (mentioned above) been added. Lastly, "One More From The Road" was a stunning live album... I put it right up there with other double-album vinyl classics of the day (i.e. - Frampton, UFO, Deep Purple, Kiss, Rush, etc). In my opinion, only 2 tracks from "One More From The Road" is a sin... if anything else Skynyrd's live version of "Free Bird" needs to be here. Skynyrd was always great in concert. OVERALL: An excellent mix. "Thyrty" is the best career-spanning Lynyrd Skynyrd package to date. Lots of music - great to have so many songs all in one place. Polished remastered sound. Nice package (4.5 stars).
Bring back the memories.......2007-01-11
I bought this for my husband and after listening to it realized I need to get it for myself. It is fantastic. It has so many great songs. If you're a Skynard fan, you can not be without this collection!
You know more of their songs than you think you do.......2006-09-24
Two things about this collection surprised me. One was the number of songs I'd heard countless times on the radio without ever realizing they were Lynyrd Skynyrd songs. The other was that the selections by the often maligned late 1980s incarnation of the band were mostly pretty good. I think both are pretty good reasons why this is a good option for the band's more casual fans.
If you want everything, or if you only want the original band's work, then you don't really want a greatest-hits album anyhow. But if you just want to hear "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," "Gimme Three Steps," "Tuesday's Gone" and such without waiting for their next turn on the classic rock station (inevitable though it is that they'll be played!), chances are you'll find all your favorites here along with a few you only knew slightly and will enjoy as well. Odds are most casual fans won't be familiar with most of the second disc, but the more recent tracks will probably appeal to most fans of the classics too. Judging from what I've heard, you probably don't want to dig much deeper into the "new" Skynyrd than what you get here anyhow. What is found here is a pretty good balance between the stuff everyone knows and the best of the rest.
A guitar player's dream band! .......2006-02-22
Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the best bands of all time, and anyone who disagree's is a complete moron! The songs are the cream of the crop from 'Tuesdays Gone' to 'What's your name' to the (it makes you want to cry it's that good of a song) 'Free bird'!
Lynyrd Skynyrd is the guitar band of the south and that will never change! Rock on 'Skynyrd rock on.
Disc 1
1. Sweet Home Alabama (A great song! Pure classic. It has everything you could expect from a southern band).
2. Need All My Friends (A wonderful guitar song. Purely Brillent! Hats off to the infamus guitar trio that is Lynyrd Skynyrd.
3. Blues Medley (This song I really had to get to like it. At first I couldn't stand it because it's so slow and LONG, but I finally can listen to it cause I get to look forward to nice long guitar riff at the end.)
4. Down South Junkin' ( Another Skynyrd classic, absolutly timeless. Love the lyrics, music, style, poise everything about this song rocks!
5. Was I Right Or Wrong? (A tell a tale song, is about lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt (May God bless his soul) making it in the business only to come back home and find out that his parents have died.)
6. I Ain't The One (Ummm I'm not sure what to write about this one so I'm saying it's good!)
7. Tuesdays Gone ( A wonderful song, I absoluty love it. Tuesdays Gone is a beautiful song with violins backing the acoustic guitar and piano, I am in love with the bass and electric guitar and the drums. The music is Brillent.)
8. Gimme Three Steps ( A funny song singing about Van Zandt dancing with some girl and her boyfriend comes in and threatens to kill him with his gun. Great stuff.)
9. Workin' For MCA ( Not my favorite song on this probley my least favorite. Catchy song, nice music though.)
10. The Balled Of Curtis Loew ( Another nice song, meaningful lyrics, unlike the *carp* (winks) they play today. A very nice bass backing. (Did I mention that I play the guitar?)
11. Call Me The Breeze (I love this song! It's a cool catchy song with horns in it! The piano is to die for! (BTW as a guitarist I talk about music alot).
12. Saturday Night Special ( This begining is one of the best intros of all time! All I can say for this is that of course it rocks, and second I'm glad my mom tunes out all music.)
13. All I Can Do Is Right About It (acoustic) ( This is such a pretty song, the struming of the guitar is fantastic! You know that Kid Rock song "I am" it sounds like that.)
14. Free Bird ( How do I begin to discribe Free Bird? One of the Best Rock Songs ever to grace our unworthy presence! Some people think art is a painting, I think art is Free Bird! Come on think about it, what's better going to a stuffy art gallery where you have to be quiet, or blowing your speakers on the true art form of Lynyrd Skynyrd! Makes me be glad to be an American! I love the music, guitars, bass, drums, keys, organ and all.)
Disc 2
I don't really care for the second cd as much as the first so I'm going to rate the songs instead of review them.
1. Whiskey Rock-A-Roller (live) 5 stars*
2. Simple Man (live) 5*
3. What's Your Name? 5*
4. That Smell 5*
5. I Know A Little 4*
6. You Know That 4*
7. Comin' Home (live) 4 1/2*
8. Swamp Music (live) 5*
9. Gimme Back My Bullets (live) 4*
10. Smokestack Lightnin' 4 1/2*
11. The Last Rebel 5*
12. Things Goin' On (acoustic) 4*
13. Talked Myself Right Into It 4*
14. We Ain't Much Different (live) 4 1/2*
15. Workin' 4*
16. Mad Hatter 4*
Long Live Lynyrd Skynyrd!
An OK Compilation.......2005-05-17
If you're a new Skynyrd fan and are thinking of buying a compilation to start with, I probably wouldn't reccomend this one. Start with "The Essential Skynyrd". But overall, this IS an OK compilation, seeing as how it includes stuff by the old band and the new band. Word of warning, though: the cuts that are marked "Live" on disc 2 are from the tribute tour, not the original band, just so you know. Another warning, if you're thinking of buying this 2-disc set just for the unreleased "Blues Medley", it's not worth it. Just download it for 99 cents instead. It's not one of the best unreleased tracks. The main thing that's wrong with this album is just what another reviewer said: the order of the songs. What I would have done differently is have the first disc be a compilation of songs by just the original band (with the outtakes at the end), and have the second be a compilation of songs by the new band. The main problem with disc 2 is that there aren't enough songs by the new band included; there are some from their albums and the rest are live cuts from the Tribute Tour, so the second disc is basically just one of those "Then & Now" albums.
So, again, this is an OK compilation, but don't put it at the top of your list of Skynyrd albums to buy.

While not as comprehensive as their self-titled box set, this greatest-hits collection is an excellent introduction to the definitive Southern-rock band. If you've always wondered why people holler "Free Bird!" at bar bands, this album will show you, along with serving up several of Lynyrd Skynyrd's best songs: "Saturday Night Special," "What's Your Name," "Tuesday's Gone," and of course "Sweet Home Alabama." Some lesser-known but equally great songs are here as well: "Gimme Three Steps," "Whiskey Rock-a-Roller," and "That Smell." While some good material (notably "Needle and the Spoon" and "Working for MCA") is missing, this remains an excellent collection, highlighting the quality of the band's material, which is too often overshadowed by their good ol' boy image. --Genevieve Williams

A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE BAND FROM THE SOUTHEAST........2007-02-05
Readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "GOLD & PLATINUM" by one of Rock's greatest bands and one of Southern Rock's greatest legendary bands to ever hail from the southeast. I give you one of Jacksonville, Florida's favorite sons, LYNYRD SKYNYRD. "GOLD & PLATINUM" was originally released in 1979 on vinyl/LP and cassette on the MCA Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being one of the true pioneers of Southern Rock music. When lead singer and frontman Ronnie Van Zant joined forces with lead and rhythm guitarist Gary Rossington, lead and rhythm guitarist Allen Collins, lead and rhythm guitarist Ed King, keyboard player Billy Powell, drummer Robert Burns and bassist Leon Wilkeson, LYNYRD SKYNYRD was born. The core of LYNYRD SKYNYRD formation can be traced back to a High School in Jacksonville, Florida initially as the group MY BACKYARD. The name is later changed to LYNYRD SKYNYRD to immortalize school gym teacher Leonard Skinner, a legendary antagonist of long haired students. The band would go on to record some of Rock's greatest classics and would later record one of Rock's most sacred anthems. LYNYRD SKYNYRD'S "GOLD & PLATINUM" would be the result of of their greatest hits and accomplishments in Rock n' Roll. "GOLD & PLATINUM" is the story of LYNYRD SKYNYRD.
I will list and review certain song tracks that are of importance and relevance to this review. In my opinion, every single song track in this compilation album is good, but to shorten this review, I must only choose certain song tracks. It was really hard to choose one over the other but here it is. The song tracks are in their original exact running order as follows: DISC ONE (1.) "Down South Jukin'," (This song defines what Southern Rock n' Roll is all about. This song kicks a*s. The guitar sound makes the music sound raw and rugged. Ronnie sings this song like he dares to get in your face.) (2.) "Saturday Night Special," (This is a well recorded SKYNRRD Southern Rocker. This is another song that kicks a*s. The guitar riffs as well as the guitar solo are breathtaking and superb. This song gives a whole definition to hard rock. This song gives you the idea of what you would be doing with a Saturday Night Special and driving fast alone along the highway at night.) (3.) "Gimme Three Steps," (This is a well performed live song track of the original. In my opinion, they should have included the original song along with the live song track. The guitar playing sounds like the south has risen to invade the country with the Southern Rock invasion.) (4.) "What's Your Name," (This song sounds like a national anthem to meeting women. This song also kicks a*s. This song has a good beat to it and also defines Southern Rock at its absolute best.) (6.) "Gimme Back My Bullets," (This is a tough rugged Southern Rocker. This song truly kicks a*s. I love the guitar playing in this Rocker. This song takes Southern Rock to another level.) (7.) "Sweet Home Alabama" (This song is Alabama's proud National Anthem. This song is one of Southern Rock's greatest achievements. This song was recorded as a result of a comeback or response to Neil Young's song "Southern Man." This song has a very positive up beat to it and gives you a good feeling when you are at a bar drinking.) and (8.) "Freebird." (This song track was performed live. This song will always kick a*s no matter what. This is another song that the album should have also included the original song with this live song track. In my opinion, this song is Southern Rock's greatest achievement. This song should be voted as one of the Top Three greatest anthems of all-time ever recorded. This song is so beautiful that you can't help but feel entranced by the power of the music. I love the way Ronnie makes his whistling sound like a freebird. Ronnie also sings this song with such raw power and emotion that he could actually bring any woman to tears. The piano actually sounds like tears. The ending of this song is the real Rock stuff that is made of legend. In my opinion, "Freebird" is the "Stairway To Heaven" of Southern Rock.) DISC TWO (1.) "That Smell," (This is another good example of Southern Rock performed to perfection. This song kicks a*s. I also love the tough rugged guitar playing in this Rocker. Ronnie sings this song with such power and emotion that you can't help but feel the song along with him.) (3.) "I ain't The One," (This song was performed live. This is another good Southern Rock song that should have included the original on this album along with this live song track. This song has a very good beat to it and also sounds tough and rugged. The guitar playing sounds superb and takes Southern Rock to another level.) (5.) "Simple Man" (This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and performed by anyone. This song is any mothers advice to her son. Ronnie sings this song with such power and emotion that he actually convinces you that it is the best way to follow. I love the power of the guitars in this slow Rocker. The guitars dare you to prove the lyrics and the music wrong.) and (7.) "Tuesday's Gone." (I love this classic slow Rocker. The guitars actually sound like Tuesday's gone with the wind. This song is another one of Southern Rock's greatest and most beloved songs.) Forgive me for leaving out your favorite songs in this album. Like I said, All of the song tracks contained on this legendary compilation album are extremely good. Overall, this is a well comprised compilation album worth seeking out.
I highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation for everyone to own as a valuable part of their own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, LYNYRD SKYNYRD has continued to entertain us with their own special blend of Southern Rock music to this very day. However, the date of 20 October 1977 will always be a day to be remembered and will never be forgotten. It would be on this tragic day that the fatal airplane crash would claim the lives of frontman Ronnie Van Zant, Steven Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines and Road Manager Dean Kilpatrick. Ronnie's son Johnny has taken over the helm and chores as lead vocalist and frontman of LYNYRD SKYNYRD perfectly. As of today, Super Bowl Sunday, LYNYRD SKYNYRD is planning to perform a concert on TV after the game. According to the LYNYRD SKYNYRD official website, LYNYRD SKYNYRD will perform on a special Super Bowl edition of Late show Craig Ferguson. LYNYRD SKYNYRD RULES. I think that it is safe to say that LYNYRD SKYNYRD is here to stay. So here's to you late great Ronnie, Johnny, Gary, Allen, late great Steven, Ed, Leon and Bob. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. R.I.P. Ronnie Van Zant, Steven Gaines, Cassie Gaines and Dean Kilpatrick. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Not Skynyrd's best..........2006-08-06
I'm not sure why this album is a double-disc (probably because of the 14-minute version of Free Bird), but it only has eight tracks on each disc. Given the basic premise (a collection of their most successful releases), the album is solid. However, several of their better, less-known songs like "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" are excluded. The highlight of the album is "Simple Man," which I consider to be their best song.
If you're looking for the best Lynyrd Skynyrd greatest hits album (from among the dozens that have been released over the years), keep looking. But if you just want a solid collection of some of their most famous work, this album does the job.
Best of the Best.......2005-10-29
All they wanted to be was the Allman Brothers Band. Oh my did they ever overachieve. If you have any doubt about the greatness of this band just play this CD.
They were underappreciated and probably still are. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are you listening? Ronnie is one of the all time best and we won't see his like anytime soon.
There is not a bad track and I will go out on a limb and say that Sweet Home Alabama is the weakest song on the CD.
Pretty Good.......2005-06-03
These songs are pretty good, but just remember that a song doesnt have to go gold or platinum for it to be a classic.
yes, this set has all the best.......2005-04-28
I have looked at other collections, and this one truly has all their best stuff. I know most people probably won't buy this set, but I urge you to check it out if you happen to decide to. Skynyrd has some great songs, and they brought a different perspective to rock music that was quite absent before their arrival (the perspective of patriots). I think its all awesome stuff, with killer 3 piece guitar and the whole works. This collection is boosted by the several live tracks, including "free bird" live, and though the studio version of this song rules, the live version is extremely good too. Anyways, give this collection a listen and see what the fuss is about.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin' Fancy.......2007-03-28
Love this group. I like that it had a history of the band up to this point in their career on the inside sleeve. I like the bonus tracks as well.
A Very Underrated Album.......2006-12-15
After Skynyrd had released their debut album and "Second Helping", they were under much pressure from their record company to put out their next album. They were in quite a rush and didn't have nearly as much time to make this album as they did for their first two. Hence the title, "Nuthin' Fancy". That's one of the things I love about this band; not only is there so much meaning in most of the songs, but even the album titles have a meaning.
We start off with "Saturday Night Special", a song that they had written for some Burt Reynolds movie (I don't remember the name). Ronnie Van Zant wrote this song basically to protest against certain hand guns. He wasn't against having a gun in the house in case of burglars, but he was writing about hand guns that were only good for close-range shooting, so he's saying that those guns were just made to kill people, not for protection. Just listen to the words: "Hand guns are made for killin' ain't no good for nothin' else; ain't no good for nothin', but puting men six feet in a hole".
Next we have "Cheatin' Woman", one of the weaker tracks on the album. It's basically the story of a depressed man who's girlfriend is cheating on him; pretty basic.
After that, we hear "Railroad Song", a tune about a hobo who basically rides on a train from town to town trying to get his music out there, but nobody in town wants him around. So it's basically a never-ending story, getting the same reaction in every town, but he refuses to give up, so he just jumps on another train and writes more songs.
Next is "I'm A Country Boy". Funny, it's not really a country song. In this song, Ronnie talks about how he is happy where he is, living in the country, and that he has no interest in living in a big city, but also tries to show that he's not saying city people and city life are bad, just that it's not for him. "What's right for me, may not be right for you. You live your way, and I'll live mine".
Next we hear "On The Hunt". This song seems to basically be about a guy who is searching for a woman, who meets a woman who is always searching for a man. A pretty good song (I still give it 4/5), but the lyrics don't speak to me as much as the other songs.
Next is the real treat, and probably my favorite song on the album, "Am I Losin'". The lyrics of this song just stick with me so much, I could listen to this track over and over again. It was written about Skynyrd's original drummer, Bob Burns, who had left the band before they made this album. It's just such a sad song where Ronnie is basically asking God why he is losing someone who was one of his best friends. "Why these things happen Lord? I don't understand. But Lord, it can sure hurt a man." This song almost brings tears to my eyes sometimes. It should've been a classic. Definitely one of my top ten favorite Skynyrd songs.
Next is the only song on this album that I can honestly say that I just don't like: "Made In The Shade". It's basically a song about a woman who has left her man, and he doesn't totally understand why; he was good to her, he tried to make her happy, but he just wasn't good enough for her, and he's just saying that she had it easy with him, so leaving was her mistake. To me, this song just doesn't fit on this album, or any other Skynyrd album. It just doesn't really sound like a Skynyrd song to me.
The album ends with "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", a song Ronnie wrote about being on the road and that playing music and touring is all he knows; it's what makes him happy. It's basically what "Travelin' Band" was to Creedence. While this is also a very good song (another one of my favorite Skynyrd tunes), the studio version on this album pales in comparisson to the live version on Skynyrd's "One More From The Road Album".
If you don't own this album, you don't know what you're missing. No, it's not Skynyrd's best album, but it's not their worst either; that wouldn't be possible, because all of their albums are good ones.
I remember reading that Ronnie wasn't too crazy about this album, but I don't think he ever gave himself enough credit. Most songwriters just come up with words because songs need them, but Ronnie wrote lyrics that people could really understand; lyrics that were about something and told us a story. I just wish more musicians put as much thought and meaning into their songs as Ronnie did.
Fly on Free Bird.
Big time Skynnyrd fan!.......2006-08-18
"On The Hunt" is a classic song. This whole CD rules! It is a travasty that Ronnie died so young.Nobody could sing like him. R.I.P. Other than that, great musicians Lynyrd Skynyrd were.
Sweet Southern Sounds .......2006-05-22
This is one of Skynyrds finest moments!
The album gets a heavy start with - Saturday Night Special, and to my opinion theres not bad song on the album.
Its a mix of heavy bluesy songs and not heavy but bluesy songs. The album feels very honest, true and well written
Its their album after their mega success witb Sweet Home Albamala........
So dont hesitate - Go and get the sweet sounds of the south.
TWO FEETS THEY COME A CREEPIN .......2006-03-10
Skynyrd did something very early on in their career that very few bands do. They released an AMAZING first album, and then followed it with a just as equally AMAZING second album (Pronounced, and Second Helping respectively.) With these two records the southern Skynyrd boys could have called it quits and still went down as legends, but fortunately MCA demanded more records.
Skynyrds third album NUTHIN FANCY, is not the absolute triumph that the first two albums were (perhaps the band recognized this when giving it the title?) but it ain't no waste of resource either.
It was 1975, and rock music was generally getting to be louder and louder all around. Hard rock bands were taking ques from the metal pioneers and cranking up the sound. This can easily be noticed on the opening track SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL and the albums first single ON THE HUNT. These songs lose a little of the heart felt personalities of the first records but are both completely pisser, and kept the band well seated at the front of the seventies Hard Rock board.
The rest of the album takes on a more down home southern style, than even the first two. Closer to an Allman Brothers feel than a Skynyrd feel, but again, this is not a bad thing. The bluesy ballad CHEATIN WOMAN is memorable, as is the moving, tonky, WHISKEY- ROCK-A-ROLLER. Other goods on this plate as well.
Some may say that this is nothing but an album of filler SKYNYRD stuff, but I can't agree with that. This is great stuff, just not as legendary as what preceeded it. Its classic rock music, from a classic rock band, its just that it prides itself in bein' NUTHIN FANCY.
I gave this one four and three fourth stars... but we can just say I gave it five.

A key ingredient in Skynyrd discography.......2007-03-03
This CD, and Nuthin' Fancy, show that good 'ol Shorty Medlocke influence with the diverse, but very southern music songwriting. Bullets is a must have if you are a Ronnie Van Zant fan first, the Skynyrd band second. This is "gone fishin" and sitting on the porch music at it's finest.
If you are a new Skynyrd fan,get One More From The Road,Pronounced and then Street Survivors. Also consider Gold and Platinum and the boxed set,if you want a major portion of the whole pie.
Enjoy .
Put 'Em Back Were They Belong.......2007-01-29
Give Me Back My Bullets is the only reason I purchased this CD for that song alone it is worth the price of the CD. The rest is fine, but not my favorite from Skynyrd.
Underrated Skynyrd.......2006-10-07
Of the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd albums, this one is the most underrated, and that is unfortunate. This album stands up there beside the classics "Pronounced" and "Second Helping" as one of Lynyrd Skynyrd's finest.
Highlights here include both studio and live versions of the excellent title track, and studio and live versions of the hidden gem "Cry For The Bad Man." The latter song is one of Skynyrd's finest tracks, but unfortunately is not included on most of the compilations in any form. Then there's the rocker "Double Trouble," the beautiful "All I Can Do Is Write About It," and the studio version of the concert staple "Searching."
If you don't already own "Pronounced" and "Second Helping," by all means go over right now and buy both, but be sure to pick this one up while you're at it. If you do own both of those, "Gimme Back My Bullets" won't disappoint. And if you're one of those unfortunate people who only know the "new" Lynyrd Skynyrd, be forewarned that those CDs are likely to begin collecting dust as soon as you hear your first few bars of Skynyrd with the late Ronnie Van Zant.
Rest In Peace Ronnie. We miss you, brother. One listen to this album, or any other Lynyrd Skynyrd album up to and including "Street Survivors," will show the listener why he's so sorely missed.
don't you dare cry for the bad man.......2006-03-23
This album has a country sound to a lot of their songs which I really enjoyed. Some of the more rockin' songs are Gimme back my bullets and double trouble. I got the same old blues is a slower song with a nice groove to it and a harmonica solo. Some of the songs have female vocals, like on double trouble, which are enjoyable. If you want to hear a more country sound from lynyrd skynyrd then you should defenitly check out this cd.
back in the saddle?.......2006-02-13
this review of "gimme back my bullets" comes from a observer of the music skynyrd produced not as a obbessed fan whom buys everyhing i've got "one more from the road" one of the best double cd albums ever made..yet i've only ever ventured into the greatest hits packaged that are shoved down my thoat at every corner it seems every few months a new greatest hits album is released..so really i bought a double disc and was overly happy
i thought to myself i'd see what their proper albums were like
and this album to my opipion is abit too country for me not sayin' it's bad..just either he needed to be more acoustic rock with less of the country tinge[i hate country]
or balls out hard rock that i know skynyrd could do..
it's a shame really because there's a great album in there
it's just swamped..but over accesses and not too many highs
sorry
