Despite the bustle of shopping, parties, and eating binges, the holidays should be a time for mellowing out, as Toronto singer Holly Cole seems keen on reminding listeners. Whereas many Christmas albums become showcases for divas to holler their guts out in the name of seasonal cheer, Cole's Baby It's Cold Outside is a very sleepy-eyed and likeable contribution to the genre. (It's also her third Christmas disc, after the 1998 EP Christmas Blues and the Japan-only Santa Baby: Live in Toronto). Cole and her longtime pianist, arranger, and coproducer Aaron Davis have created a set of light, mildly jazzy renditions of holiday standards, including "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "The Christmas Song," and--with the Barenaked Ladies' Ed Robertson making a cameo as vocalist--the title track written by the great Frank Loesser.

The orchestra swells and surges for exuberant versions of "'Zat You Santa Claus" and "Christmas Is," but for the most part, the proceedings are adamantly low-key, giving Cole plenty of opportunity to show off her range without having to compete to be heard. She playfully scats her way through "Sleigh Ride" (accompanied solely by bassist David Piltch), gets low and sultry for "What About Me," and gives soft, delicate performances on "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Never, No." The last song was Mary Margaret O'Hara's contribution to Count Your Blessings, a 1994 holiday album also featuring Cole, and its reappearance here is most welcome. Baby It's Cold Outside could have used a few more selections that were equally esoteric--like the Pretenders' "2,000 Miles" from Christmas Blues--but Cole and Davis are to be commended for their smart and subtle approach to some oft-abused songs. --Jason Anderson

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Christmas CD.......2007-02-11

I love to listen to this CD over and over at Christmas time! A nice change from the traditional music.

5 out of 5 stars Typical Holly Cole - great Christmas album.......2002-10-20

Holly has developed a style all her own - one which relies heavily on covers, but interpreted differently from the original.

So it is with this Christmas album, although Holly has not changed anything really dramatically. Even so, Holly's versions of Baby it's cold outside, The Christmas song, Santa baby, I'll be home for Christmas, If we make it through December and Sleigh ride could never be mistaken for any other.

The other songs are all new to me, though I know that most of them are also covers - for example, Zat you Santa Claus? is associated with Louis Armstrong.

This is a wonderful, relaxing, Christmas album which may not suit everybody - you have to allow it to grow on you, but it's well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Baby I Do Care.........2006-08-29

I bought this CD just because of the song "Baby I don't care" which I really like. However, to my surprise other songs in this cds are equally good as well.
Price of this cd is also reasonable. A must have for those who only know Transvision Vamp because of their hit song "Baby I don't care". You'll definitely love all the songs..A recommended buy.

5 out of 5 stars Best of a Good Lot.......2006-04-28

The format may be bubblegum, but the arrangements, musicianship and even the lyrics are generally brilliant. The selection of tracks here is astute, including all the band's biggest hits. But if you liked this collection, you probably should have bought all their regular albums instead, because it's basically all this good. (Or nearly.) Best thing about this Best Of is the price... some of their original albums seem to be insanely expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Wandy Vamp.......2005-10-20

Da li se secate Transvision Vamp? Da li mozete da ih zaboravite?
Tesko! Velicanstveno.
Pravi dokument da legende ostaju legende.
Idealni poklonici PopArt koji su uspeli za samo tri godine da naprave kult i mit.
Ako ste ih ikada culi, znate vec da im je tesko odoleti.

4 out of 5 stars aesthetic nihilism.......2004-06-16

this music is so vacuous it almost breaks you heart, but it sounds so F-ing good. "baby I dont care" is one of the most nihilistic bubble gum songs of the 1980's.

4 out of 5 stars hey sister moon..........2002-11-20

transvision vamp is a band i remember, but never really heard during their peak. mostly i remember them from reading the british music teen rag smash hits'...american version. after hearing about them on a kylie minogue message board, i decided to give them a shot. i came across this best of release and i must say i was pleasantly surprised.

they are loud, sassy and made some of the trashiest pop rock i've ever heard. as a transvision vamp virgin, i can say i was satisfired. granted there are a few fillers, but overall i was highly pleased. standout tracks for me were the epic "velveteen", "baby i don't care", "tell that girl to shut up", "kiss their sons", "if looks could kill" and the irresistable "sister moon" which i must have listened to 100 times since i got this cd.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest lo-fi songwriter.......2003-01-29

The scene: A flat in Sheffield in 1985. An unemployed overweight middle-aged man
fights off boredom by writing songs. With no musical training, he does his
best to record them using a four track tape deck, a guitar, and a cheap synth
and drum machine.

A few years later, he has around 400 songs on cassette, mostly untitled,
kept in a plastic bag. Major record labels are completely uninterested.
Friends persuade him to release some of the songs on a CD, as is. A music
publishing deal pays for a run of 1000 discs, and "I Was Born A Man" is
released.

The album sells out by word of mouth. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive.
Three more albums are put out, with postcards for listeners to vote on
their favorite tracks. The limited releases sell out and become highly
valuable collectors' items. Suddenly every record company is calling.

So Baby Bird the solo artist went on to become Babybird the band and have some
UK hit singles. Sure, they were pretty good, but somehow something important
had been lost in the chaos of suddenly selling half a million singles and
playing packed gigs in London.

These are the original four track recordings. They might be musically crude in
places, but they have an honesty and soul that the slick commercial Babybird
albums lack. The songwriting is eccentric, poetic, down-to-earth, witty,
wistful, brilliant. One man pouring his soul into his music.

"Wouldn't let me see you, like an angel swimming in hell, now I know the reason
why, wish I'd pushed the doorbell."

If I could make just one album as good as Baby Bird's, I could die happy.
This boxed set has six of them. They're all good. It's a crying shame this
man hasn't achieved recognition in the USA.

The original quintet of albums has been remastered by Stephen Jones (Baby
Bird), with high end studio equipment used to extract as much as possible from
the master cassettes. The songs are noticably clearer than on the original
releases, while keeping their lo-fi charm. So yes, the box set is worth buying
even if you have all the original CDs.

The mysterious sixth "black album" contains 18 previously unreleased tracks
from the bag of tapes. Though not quite up to the standard of the previous
five, there are some great songs here. In style, it's perhaps closest to
"Dying Happy".

I am not a huge Gwen fan but thought this CD would be fun. It is terrible. The second disc replays the same song 4 times in a row, each one a different "mix." Also thought the import would be cool and offer something different but was not impressed at all.

The Review of
DISC #1 Rating: ++++ 4 stars
As you know Gwen made a really big debut in 2004-2005. That's something definitely, with the singles like What You Waiting For & Hollaback Girl is on Billboard. The album itself is alomst perfect. Along the album you'll be so entertained by catchy-classic-mid-techno rhytym and music. The first four track, definitely you've heard them on the radio and watch the video on MTV. Bubble Pop Electric, her duet with Johnny Vulture A.K.A. Andre 3000 is pretty funny, espscially the part Gwen called herself "bubble pop electric chick". Luxurious which is the next single, well I think not really good as the singles before, but it's pretty Europe-techno-tasted beat songs. The other tracks seems try to catch Gwen's funny and pop-py taste of music, whether with old-techno (The Real Thing), or with semi-Chinese-modern-dance (Serious), or with a beautiful duet of peace (Long Way To Go). This album is definitely one of album of the year (Grammy's choice is right and I hope Gwen will win it on 8th Feb 2006).
Disc #2 Rating: +++* 3 1/2 stars
Much more catchy music...That's the right thing of the bonus disc. The remixes in this have really different beats than the original version. The Jacques Lu Cont's WYWF? Dub&Mix are really cool. Mix some dancefloor-beats, Japanesse, and ticking clock is really cool. Pretty catchy and great for album opening. The live tracks is no big, just some part in the songs Gwen's voice really weird. Her voice sounds like a cat screaming on the catwalk. But the live tracks still good, if you want to hear the other versions of the songs. The Hollatronik and Photek Remix are really cool. Modern dance beat and classy really mixed up.
The Last track is Dance Hollaback. Well, for me this is the best remixes from the album and the reason why you must buy this album. The beat is really awesome. Tony Kanal remixed this song into kind of black-retro and adding Jamaican-rap into it. really awesome, really makes you dance hollaback!
//After all this is a really great repackage album. Gwen definitely can present the taste of her music along with the great producers. This is a really worth collection, you gotte have it!//

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for me........2006-05-04

I LOVE the Swingle Singers. The first time I heard them sing Bach back in the 60's I was driving a car and I was so blown away that I had to pull off the road. And I LOVE Irving Berlin's music; his message is simple and direct and tuneful. And therein lies the rub. To me, the jazz vocal styles, the contemporary harmonies and the whimsical utterances of the Swingle Singers go together with Irving Berlin's music like oil and water; they just don't mix. The words and melodies are those of Irving Berlin but the end result isn't Irving Berlin. Admittedly this is one man's opinion, and others might take great pleasure in the Swingle Singers' unfailing virtuosity and inventiveness. But if you anticipate the straighforward tunes and emotional directness in Berlin's music, you are apt to be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Fragrance Remains in My Veins.......2007-06-11

Who is Chris Thomas? Well, if you've seen Casablanca then you might remember the line, "{Chris} is a man that if i were a woman, i would be in love with Chris..." A true Romantic in the tradition of Byron, Keats & Shelley, et al. This is melodrama at its most sensuous and intelligent. Thomas emotes with precision and abandon simultaneously. Not a false note in this most passionate and heart-felt of voices. Imagine Bryan Ferry's melancholic romanticism and then double it up with soaring strings and a piano that keeps wanting to play Liszt, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. That's a start. This a recording for you and the bottle. Settle back, get ready to go to that special place you keep behind a locked door. This record will bring on the most vivid experiences of your own bitterweet, most glorious love. Sometimes you gotta go back there where the fragrance is still as fresh and vivid as ever. It's rare music that has that kind of magic.

The recording deserves 5 stars for what I consider to be several perfect pieces (some songs mean well but get bogged down in production errors). Chris is at his best when at his most intimate.

When is this genious gonna put out some more music? I've got a bottle waiting in the cellar. Here's to you, Chris. God bless ya.

5 out of 5 stars This one grows on you! Outstanding effort........2003-12-06

The Bathers music contains some of the most goregous meoldies you will ever hear. The vocal style takes a while to get used to if Tom Waits isn't in your regular music rotation. I have a few of the Bathers CD, and this is the only one that gets 5 stars. This is the perfect album for that rainy night with that special someone. Soothing and always moving, a must have for any music fan of the soft drum brushes, light guitar washed with piano. It looks like this reissue has a different track numbering than the Marina records pressing, although the tracks look the same. The album art is different as well. The Marina records album art looks much softer and nicer. But the music is what counts here.

4 out of 5 stars Secret Treasure.......2003-06-24

This was the fifth album from Glasgows secret treasure. Not enough people have heard of this band which is a damn shame because ,trust me,they are superb.I'd recommend this album to anyone, i love it to death, especially classy songs like East Of East Delier,Girl From The Polders and the magnificent title track. For me it evokes the early Van Morrison classic "Astral Weeks" or maybe Bowies slower stuff (especially the glorious Lady Grinning Soul).Don't take my word for it,buy this and be swept off your feet!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Punk Muzak? Tell your dentist all about it..........2003-09-04

Surprisingly, this isn't just a throwaway -- it's exceptionally listenable, both for graying punks (me) and brand new ones (my son). The instrumentation has a circus-like feeling to it, but verrrrry slowed down, with a lot of subtlety and humor injected, so it often takes a few listens to recognize the song (you could use the track list of course, but I found it more fun to try and stump myself and my friends). Faves are Smash It Up, Ever Fallen In Love, and No More Heroes. And Teenage Kicks.

The only one that doesn't work quite as well was Hong Kong Garden, as the original has similar instrumentation.

The graphics are pretty cool as well (same feel as their web site).

If they put out another volume, I would strongly recommend "Oh Bondage Up Yours", "Suspect Device", "Love Comes in Spurts", "Pay Your Rates", "Shot By Both Sides", "Boys Don't Cry" , nearly anything by the Slits, "Academy Fight Song" "Olivers Army", "Dead Pop Stars", Pere Ubu (especially the first few LPs), "Collapsing New People", "Armalite Rifles" (I'd love to hear that one), anything off of "Unknown Pleasures", "Little Johnny Jewel", "Pissing in the River", early Wire...

Now if someone would just do "Prog Rock Baby" ("Supper's Ready", anyone?), we'd be all set...

3 out of 5 stars What you waiting for?.......2005-01-01

Platinum blonde frontwoman Gwen Stefani is best known for the ska-pop sound in her band No Doubt. But for her solo debut, "Love Angel Music Baby," Stefani goes for a totally different sound -- bubblegummy eighties dancepop, a clubby, colorful, glitzy whirl full of Harajuku girls.

"What You Waiting For?" is the strongest single from here, where Stefani ticks off the seconds before launching into a danceable, self-addressed lecture: "Life is short/you're capable.../what you waiting for?" Stefani urges herself to "take a chance" while "you're still a super-hot female," all against her longings to get more fans in Japan.

"Harajuku Girls" is a kitschy ode to Japanese fashionistas (they get mentioned several times over the album), while the sugary "Bubble Pop Electric" with Andre 3000 is a goofy, sugary pop song. A few of the songs misfire, like interracial dating song "Long Way To Go," which becomes way too self-important. But mostly they revel in the sound of early Madonna tunes, with a new wave twist. There's also a Muzak version of "What You Waiting For," which is pretty worthless.

"Love Angel Music Baby" won't surprise anybody -- it's all in the style of the first single. It's sleek. It's sexy. It's a guilty pleasure, and it rarely pretends to be anything else. Basically it's not for anyone looking for high-quality music, but it's a fun diversion when you are dancing around your living room.

Stefani's voice isn't technically the best, but she can range from wispy to a throaty purr to a squeal. And her vocals get a pretty good workout here. The musical styles are more electronic than her previous work with No Doubt, taking on a more new wave sound. Think 21st-century Blondie, with a bit of funk thrown in.

The lyrics are simplistic in a dancefloor kind of way. They're meant to sound fun to the synth beats, not be deep -- "born to blossom/bloom to perish" are perhaps the strongest lines, as Stefani examines her own fragile popularity. Her sole effort at depth, "Long Way To Go" gets a bit too hamhanded. And it's Martin Luther King Jr., sweetie. Martin Luther was the guy who P.O.ed the Pope and formed the Lutheran church.

Gwen Stefani makes a fun guilty pleasure in "Love Angel Music Baby." It has light-as-air lyrics and poppy music, but it's worth a spin if you want something to dance to.

1 out of 5 stars When a Good Group Makes a Bad Song.......2004-06-07

This song is terrible! The lyrics are bad, the music is unpleasant and the whole result is just annoying. I usually like No Doubt alot, and imagine that the lyrics were meant to be clever, but the repetitive chorus is like a toothache. I hope they get back to more songs that are fun and meaningful.

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible 0 Stars!.......2003-09-24

This song is horrible. I'm no fan of No Doubt ( but my best friend is, though), and it goes without saying that this song is just as bad as Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back", Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby", CeCe Peniston's "Finally",etc. (One-Hit Wonder Material). If this was No Doubt's first single of their first album, they'd be one of those one-hit wonders. Now, my best friend is a huge fan of No Doubt, and he can't get enough of this song. I told him, if he wants to be my friend, never play or sing this song around me. It is that bad! Don't waste your money. This kind of song deserves to be illegally downloaded from the internet.

    5 out of 5 stars Buy this it's great.......2003-05-07

This is the same version released in Australia and this excellent CD also has the colour film clip for the Hey Baby song which is pretty good. It has excellent computer graphics for the menu of the film clip.

The other two songs are pretty good. Hey Baby Homeboy mix is actually pretty good with better background music than the original version. It's pretty much the same except for that.

Ex Girlfriend the Psycho Ex Mix isn't as good as the original version and contains a lot of computer sounds. It's still pretty good though.

5 out of 5 stars No Doubt is The Best Ever.......2003-01-21

no doubt is the best band ever. this cd is great. i would recominde this album to anyone and everyone. i have been listening to NO DOUBT literally my whole life. im only 16. but my used to listen to them. when i was 4 or 5 she brought home their self titled album. cause i had a toothache. so she let me listen to that song. of course it wasnt my mollers though. and i have been hooked on them ever since. i have been to 12 of their concerts. i truely am their #1 fan.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back No Doubt.......2002-04-16

When they first appeared on to the music scene, No Doubt were huge. Then, after their initial smash 'Don't Speak', they faded into obscurity, with only a few minor hits (including the fantastic 'Just A Girl'), which is a shame, considering how talented the group is. Now, they're back with a vengeance, and a complete change in direction. It was a bit of a gamble, but it obviously paid off, because it resulted in a massive No.2 smash. Good luck to them in the future, because judging by this new hit, they're back on form and are certain to be massive this time round.
