Given his endless roster of side projects in addition to his main gig, Sebadoh, it would seem Lou Barlow just can't get enough of himself. But as the king of lo-fi, it's Lou's job to be a compulsive releaser of material. In committing so much to tape, Barlow gives us an intimate view of a songwriter in all his moods and various states of polish. Barlow appears on 9 of 13 cuts on the soundtrack of the much-discussed film Kids, mainly as part of a duo with John Davis called Folk Implosion. While there's a spare Sebadoh oldie ("Spoiled") and an angry punk exorcism from the four-man Deluxx Folk Implosion ("Daddy Never Understood"), mostly we hear Barlow in mellow dance mode with the groove-based Implosion. Over trancelike mechanical beats and synth effects that verge on ambient at times, Barlow delivers vocals in as plain and funky a style as a nerdy white boy can. It's a shame that songs like "Natural One" and "Wet Stuff" barely appear in the film; they create a perfect backdrop for Kids' confused adolescents. --Roni Sarig

STANDS OUT FAR BETTER THAN THE FILM.......2007-04-25
Ok, although I never cared to much for the movie itself, I always have dug the soundtrack to KIDS. I bought this disc sometime in junior high and it has remained a staple in my rotation ever since. It is an album best played when you have no idea what to put on (and this happens more often than you would think.)
Daniel Johnson opens this up with warped string section sound and pre-emo voiceover tune called CASPER (this song is loosely reprised later on in the disc.) Daniel Johnson was not the guy from Dinosaur Jr. like I had thought, that was Lou Barlow, and he can be found with his fingers in just about every other track on this disc except for two or three... Folk Implosion/Deluxx Folk Implosion rip into the punk rock styled DADDY NEVER UNDERSTOOD, which seems to melt into the rythmic NOTHING GONNA STOP, also by them... they also do the radio song NATURAL ONE.
Throughout this disc is a good handful of tripped out chamber-like instrumentals, some other assorted weirdness, a little bit of underground hip hop, and some dubs.. oh and a seventies soft rock like song from Sebadoah (also Barlows so I have read) called SPOILED.
All of these songs seem to mix perfectly together in their order. Some people have complained that more than half of the songs from the film were not included on this soundtrack.. but I have no problem with that at all.
As far as I'm concerned this is a quality album as a whole, rather than just a random collection of songs, very surreal, but very chilled out, and very good for setting that type of mood. KIDS the movie was overhyped and overplayed, but KIDS the soundtrack never seems to get old.
Pick it up. Yo.
Ridiculous.......2006-08-03
I dont see how this soundtrack is averagin' like 4 stars. There should at least be a hip hop soundtrack to it. Being that it took place in a ghetto environment and thats what was mostly played in the movie. If you lookin for the hip hop tracks avoid this and check out dudes review below me.
the REAL soundtrack.......2004-08-09
For anyone who's interested, here are the hip hop songs from the movie:
Pow-Beastie Boys
In 3's-Beastie Boys
Sabrosa-Beastie Boys
Whutcha Want-Nine
Da Bichez-DJ Premier & Jeru the Damaja
Word is Bond-Brand Nubian
Wrong Side Of The Tracks-Artifacts
Crooklyn (Inst.)-Crooklyn Dodgers
Oh My God-A Tribe Called Quest
Listen Up-E Rule
Time's Up-O.C.
This one's for the children........2003-11-25
This disc is pretty much dominated by Lou Barlow. Nothing like his former band "Dinosaur Jr.", but plenty from "Folk Impolsion" and a track from "Sebadoh". There's a few other tracks here, but mostly it is all lo-fi stuff. The "Casper the friendly ghost" song is cool. Most of this is good for just chillin' though. The big song here, and probably the best, is "Natural One". That's incredibly addictive. I do agree with another reviewer that "John Frusciante's" solo stuff is much like this, and mostly good. In the end, this might not be as entertaining as the movie, but it is pretty cool.
magnificient!.......2003-08-20
I love this album. I can listen to it when I work out (it's very beat driven), I can listen to it when I'm falling asleep or hanging out (it's very mellow) and I can listen to it after I watch Kids and love it love it love it. Although I can listen to the whole thing without skipping any songs, I think the stand-out tracks are "Jenny's Theme" and "Natural One" both by Folk Implosion, "Spoiled" by Sebadoh and "Good Morning Captain" by Slint. I think my parents like "Natural One" even more than I do, maybe it reminds them of seventies rock? I'm too young to know. All are deliciously guitar-y backed with wonderful drumming and Slint is a marathon long, which I always enjoy. "Daddy Never Understood" is the song featured in the previews and is punky, but not overwhelmingly so and the Daniel Johnston songs are especially wonderful... two of the few songs that have lyrics. I think the weakest parts are "Simean Groove," only because the wolf howl is a bit cheesy, and "Mad Fright Night" becuase it is the only rap track on the album. This album opened me up to a whole new world of music, as cliche as it sounds, and I'm planning on buying many Sebadoh and Slint cds now, haha. Everyone who loved Kids should immediately purchase this.

Lou Barlow returns with another amazing album - you'll probably love it!.......2006-01-10
Folk Implosion is made up of ex-Sebadoh singer/songwriter Lou Barlow and his partner John Davis. This obviously created a lot of hype. Thankfully, even with the album being arguably uneven (though that more has to do with the fact that it has 3 GREAT songs and the others are simply "good"), Folk Implosion managed to write some GREAT songs (these would be "Pole Position", "Insinuation" and "Checking In"). These songs are simply some of the best indie rock tunes that I have the pleasure of owning. These songs essentially make the album a classic as the rest are merely "good". It also seems pretty original for some reason, even though it sounds like it was influenced by many other bands. Lou Barlow is still a very good singer, and although he doesn't necessarily go for any high notes you won't care about that at all. The lyrics are surprisingly good here, and oftentimes they're pretty memorable (and catchy). The musicianship is also extremely good (and clear) here - it sounds like lo-fi indie rock. Basically, there's a lot one will like about this album. Lou Barlow and indie rock fans will love this album, and I think other people probably will too! Highly recommended!
Highlights include:
the entire album!
OK, but not the best.......2005-08-29
Like I thought of the "Take a look inside" CD.....these are really just the reference material which the later CDs have grown from. The better CD to buy is "One Part Lullaby" or even the "KIDS" soundtrack....where the beats and melodies are more compicated and interwoven....more mature sound.
I must not be too bright.......2002-11-30
Either that, or I can't tell what's cool anymore.Even at 30, I still think this is an unpolished alternative gem. Warm,lo-fi minimalist pluckings showcase introspective love bummer lyrics that chronicle the darker side of affection. Sure, it isn't radio friendly, but is that the measure of goodness? You'll get high mileage out of this CD-hard to tire of. Shoegazers take note, this is your record.
pleasent enough.......2002-08-29
This is nice indie rock for teenagers as it gets. I mean, its not the Beatles, but it has its place and it does have some really good songs like Burning Paper (the best on the Cd in my opinion), Insinuation, and Checking In.
Something about playing this album in Oct or Nov when it starts to get really chilly outside and you've just broken up with someone. That's how I first heard it. Not to say it cheered me up at all, but I listen to it now and I am instantly transported to walking home one late afternoon in November as the sun was starting to weaken out, and I had on a sweater, but I was still cold and I had just broken up with my girlfriend. And of course, I am listening to this thing in my walkman. So now, forever until the end of time, that is what I think of listening to this album. Arghhhh!!
I don't have any of their other albums, except for that early one that says on the back: 20 songs in 14 minutes, or something like that. That one sounds like my ex-girlfriend's brother's band in the garage when they didn't have a bass player and they only knew three songs and the drummer couldn't keep in time!!
Oh, gee, I've just put on the CD, and here it comes, the opening bars of Pole Position and there I am walking on that sidewalk with all those kids riding bikes and laughing, and there I was dwelling on a broken heart and this was my soundtrack.
I hope you have better listening experiences than I did. Don't listen to ANY cd if you just broke up with your girlfriend. That CD will never make you think of anyone else but her.
Better than One Part Lullaby.......2002-06-14
Yes, definitely One Part Lullaby made use of more instruments, but that doesn't mean that it has a better sound. If you were already a fan of the Folk Implosion, you would get bored of One Part Lullaby easily; it sounds as if trying to go mainstream. I highly recommend Dare to be Surprised because it has more of an original and lo-fi sound. Great album.

4 stars for Natural One.......2004-03-12
Natural one is a great song alone and good song to go with the movie kids, fits it perfectly. This single only has 2 songs on it and the second Song Cabride is just a instrumental, reminds me of new york and the movie- goes good with it. So i recomend this if you like the music from the movie kids or I recomend the whole soundtrack. Natural one 4 stars-cabride, 2 and half-3 stars.
Great single, but the b-side disappoints.......2003-11-03
"Natural One" is one of my favorite songs. I hadn't previously heard anything else by Folk Implosion, however, so I expected the b-side to be stylistically similar to "Natural One." "Cabride," the b-side, is rather discordant, with some odd instrumentation. I'm pretty sure I heard a recorder in there somewhere. I've listened to it a few times but I just can't seem to get into it.
So, overall: 3 stars. As I said, I love "Natural One" and would have given the single 5 except for the weirdness (for lack of a better term) of "Cabride."

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
The Folk Implosion duo Lou Barlow and John Davis offer a kaleidoscope of tracks on One Part Lullaby, turning through a lucid dream state of lyrical introspection. Thickly padded, moderately paced hop-hop rhythms synced with distorted guitars, rolling snares, and simple keyboard touches lend a powerfully hypnotic quality to the alt-rock wash. Its warm, steady flow bestows on the listener a sort of clairvoyance that remembers birth, foresees death, and relives all the good stuff in between. --Beth Massa
Amazon.com
It isn't like anybody has been waiting around for "the great L.A. album," but several bands (Guns N' Roses, Hole) have nevertheless tried to make it. Who would expect that it would finally be done by a hung-up East Coast Romeo who followed his love to Los Angeles and found the city strangely to his liking? Folk Implosion singer-lyricist Lou Barlow is noted for his dejected love songs, and now he sings them to a city unsympathetic and detached, made of concrete and overpasses and not one to fall in love. Barlow is lucky that John Davis, his partner in the duo, is more sympathetic to his new metropolitan muse than his roughshod cohorts in Sebadoh. Davis layers dense ribbons of guitar and rhythms to re-create both the hazy pall of pollution that hangs over the city and the complex social strata that lives beneath it. Barlow's lyrics reference both his flight from the East and his "following the setting sun" to arrive in paradise. The centerpiece of this song cycle is "Easy L.A." with it Tupac-y vocoder chorus and sophisticated electronic hum. "Here I am / Never thought I'd be / Among the drifters and directors / A place for me / It's nothing like I thought it was after all." This album is less a lullaby and more a valentine to America's enigmatic oasis. --Lois Maffeo
Customer Reviews:
I thought I was crazy..........2006-09-15
because I loved this CD so much, until I saw the comments below. Nothing to add but my vote for this desert island disc.
Most overlooked.......2005-01-27
The fact that this album wasn't huge amazes me. Not that quality can necessarily be gauged by popularity, but everyone I've known who's listened to this album has loved it. Songs from this album make it onto just about every mix CD I make and everyone asks about it. I love it. I guess you can tell. You probably will too.
incredible.......2003-03-21
one of the finest records of the 90's, for sure, it's incredible that it spawned no hits.
would be popular in a fair world.......2002-04-08
I am listening to the album right now! yep. Because it's good. This is perhaps the most fully developed work Lou Barlow has done to date, and the most consistent all the way through. It is missing some of that fun indie guitar rock that made Dare to Be Surprise and Sebadoh's Bakesale so good, but it makes up for it with some high quality layered and better produced songs (which isn't a bad thing). good songs, some might even make you dance!
Stole this CD from my brother, a twenty year old college boy.......2001-10-01
This CD is awesome. There are very few CDs (including those of my favorite bands) of which I can honestly say I love every song. This one however, is an exception. There is a wide range of music, all of which is fresh, interesting, and just REALLY GOOD! I am a fan of Liberal Arts college boy music, (a style I named myself that includes such bands as Death Cab for Cutie, Built to Spill, Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan, and some people no one has ever heard of) and this CD definetly fits in at the top of that collection. Buy it, buy it, buy it!!!

Little that's come out of the rock underground since the alternative revolution has been of a distinctly sensual nature. Indie rockers dance around romantic entanglement, but seldom cut in. That's the case with this "Red Hot" compilation, which doesn't mean much of it doesn't have it's own pitiable appeal. A case in point is the album's opener, Freedom Cruise's "Sensational Gravity Boy," a characteristically tuneful and verbose Guided by Voices number that finds the new rock darlings working in tandem with the Breeders' Kim and Kelley Deal. Shayne Carter, ex of Straitjacket Fits, teams up with New Zealand countrymen the Verlaines on "Some Fantasy." Lois Maffeo and Rebecca Gates team on "Sotto Voice," one song that is baldly sexual, though no one's going to get it mixed up with "Let's Get it On." Two interesting one-man bands, Stephen Merritt (here billed as Future Bible Heroes) and F.M. Cornog (East River Pipe) come up with album highlights-a catchy updating of techno pop and a understated elegy for Kurt Cobain, respectively. --Steven Stolder

Who knew?.......2003-01-18
This is one of of those CD's that I got out of the bargain bin - which I frequently do just to look for something new and caught the Jay Farrar/Kelly Willis duet on the back of the jacket. That alone was worth the 4 bucks in my book. Anyway - wasn't expecting too much and have been pleasantly blown away by what I found. Would highly encourage anyone who's even thinking of buying it to do so - you won't be disappointed. Highlights for me were tracks - 2, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, & 17 though not necessarily in that order. Much depends on my mood. Oh yeah - have never heard guitars like the ones on the Verlaines track - just and outstanding raucous celebration. Like standing on a pile of dead rock stars....

Quite possibly one of the best albums ever..........2006-06-21
What first seems to be just an adventure into lounge, bossa nova, etc. quickly starts to pull you in. From beginning to end, this album does not dissapoint. Even the slower songs have their place. At this point, we can only wonder how much longer we will have to go without a follow up album; and at this point, it can't come soon enough.
Follow My Riddim.......2005-04-23
Has to be one of the coolest songs I've ever heard. I've had this album for awhile now and never get tired of it. This is one that will be played over and over again. Just amazing.

it's the best cd to listen on the mexico city - acapulco highway.
the sun shines and you speed through the moutains with great easy beats and refreshing melodies.
from treat her groovy to smile a little smile. every song, although sometimes it sounds a bit repeating, has some beats or rythmes or i dunno what that makes you happy.
definitely a cd to have in the back of your car
Solid Lounge, 60's, Jazzy Sound.......2002-09-16
I first heard their track thanks to a Nueva Bossa Nova cd. Remixed on that CD was "Tic Tac", the sexy, Brazilian/French vibe song as interpreted by Nicola Conte. Out of curiousity, I figured I'd check out their full length album.
I wasn't very disappointed at all, considering I hardly knew what to expect. It's not really Bossa at all. It's really just lounge - the French sort of lounge. I think the best way I can describe this CD is to think of De-Phazz's Godsdog. It is similar, maybe like a mix between that CD and Raccoon's Universal vibes. Some of the tracks are airy and light, others are just, well, loungish and cheesy. Either way, you can put this disc in and enjoy.
The best songs, in my opinion, are Tic Tac, The Upper Lefthand Corner of the Sky nad Lailove. Be warned, if you don't like Lounge or the 60's, 70's sounding Paris/Italian cafe sort of lounge (Easy Tempo like), you probably won't like this. In fact, I'd probably recommend getting De-PHazz if you're thinking about both - and unless you're a collecter, just wait and hear what will probably be better renditions of their work on various compilations. But if you're looking for something different, but a bit similar to De-Phazz, pick this up... if it makes a difference, Alex Gopher was involved in this release.

Sebadoh might have been one of the defining bands of the indie-rock revolution, but it seems Lou Barlow's side project the Folk Implosion was built to last. The New Folk Implosion, despite its name, provides a fine example of what Barlow has always done best: soulful rock music that captures the poetic shyness and sense of inadequacy of its maker. Barlow's lo-fi edge mellowed into a loose sonic adventurousness long ago. Here, ex-Sebadoh drummer Russell Pollard's rhythms are occasionally augmented by fluid loops. There's nothing as immediately hooky as "Natural One," the group's unlikely hit from Larry Clark's controversial teen movie Kids. But those still mourning the passing of Sebadoh ought to find what they're looking for in the windswept "Releast," "Creature of Salt," and "Pearl." --Louis Pattison

its a great album listen to it with no preconceptions of what it should be
One of our best.......2003-08-16
I am so confused as to why fans of a band or artist balk at any sigh of growth, especially when they are supposed to be "indie" fans. Indie fans aren't supposed to want to pigeon hole an artist. Lou continues to show his expansion of his themes in both Sebadoh and IF and that should be a good thing not something everyone runs from.
This CD is one of the most cohesive works Loobie has done. The song writing is impeccable. The tunes get deep inside you. They are haunting, beautiful and dark.
Please expand your horizon along with Lou and stick by everything he does. He is one of our best!!!!
Classic Lou Barlow.......2003-05-23
Another classic album by Lou Barlow. I have been a Sebadoh and Folk Implosion fan for a number of years and what draws me to the music is that you do not expect a consistent sound from one album to the next. There is always a degree of experimentation and the result is always fresh.
Stand out tracks are Fuse, Releast and Easy. I found it hard at first to listen to this version of Easy after listening to the loobiecore version, but this song rates up there with Sorry and Nightmare which is worth the price of the CD alone.

terrible.......2003-03-24
lou barlow can be brilliant and often clueless. hes clueless here. with the exception of track 7 (great) and 9 (good), this is an album without direction. What happened to the wonderful melodies ala one part lullaby? This drivel should be avoided. Its like the worst of Sebadoh and most of Sebadoh was horrible.

His work in Sebadoh might have endeared him to a generation of mopey hipsters, but it took the Folk Implosion's left-field Top 40 hit "Natural One" to raise Lou Barlow's profile in Middle America. If you're looking for nothing more challenging than the pop propensity of that song (which does not appear here), this much headier disc may make for uneasy listening--but only at first. Barlow and partner John Davis have an uncanny knack for crafting ambient tunes--like the reverb-laden "Blossom"--that insinuate themselves into your skull after a few listens. The duo takes plenty of chances, building rickety sound-collages ("Sputnik's Down") and donning Mod duds (for the punchy title track), and by cramming 14 songs into just over 22 minutes, they insure that the disc contains a little something for everyone. --David Sprague

Talk about raw.......2007-02-24
If you thought sebadoh III was raw, that was nothing! this album is so raw it was recorded in a bedroom. at times its hollow. i feel like i am evansdropping on rehersal sessions at their house. which you are. anyways, lou barlow & Co rock it. Some interesting melodys and songs. this is good.
14 songs in 22 minutes.......2005-11-05
This one just rocks its way into your heart the whole short time it's playing. Each song is a condensed pop gem, quickly and roughly hewn out of Lou and John's (then) exuberant love of noise and syncopation.
These songs were not deliberated and edited to death -- au contraire, they are still steaming they are so freshly and jaggedly sliced from the squirming rock-fabric.
Fun to throw on at parties.
Not as good as later stuff.......2005-08-29
Essential CD for a Folkie collector, but not one of the better CDs. I am particularly smitten with the "One Part Lullaby" CD, as I think the material exhibits the maturity and complexity gained from previous efforts. The songs on this CD are like B-sides....too short and not developed.
perfect pop with a lo-fi heart but a hi-fi soul........1999-11-04
Good things come in small packages. At only 22 minutes long, "Take a look inside..." sounds as complete as any 75 minute long album. Often regarded as lou barlow's "other" band, the folk implosion's first album is a short, firey, lo fi dream. Ditching the negativity from his previous Sebadoh albums, Lou Barlow and John Davis (ex-Palace Music) have crafted a gem. The opening "Blossom" well, blossoms and the closing "Start again" stumbles and jolts around like a runaway rollercoaster. The focus appears to be more towards a fun recording. Lou and John sing in unison without a care in the world (see the sleazy "Slap Me" or the urgent "Sputnik's Down") while the guitars intertwine and caress the beautifully sloppy drums and smooth basslines. Only when they get a little self indulgent does the album veer towards the niggling side. "Winter's Day" is the guilty party here. However, with some startlingly fresh tracks like "Butterfly-Spiderweb" and the title track along with a sneaky cover ("Waltzin with yr ego"), "Take a look inside" is refreshing and well worth seeking.
Pure-pop.......1999-11-02
This is a great album. If you like Sebadoh I'm not sure if I would recommend this because it is very very different. These are like early Beatles pop songs. They're fun. They're great. And you can dance with your kids!

has two great tracks.......2005-06-23
'mood swing' and 'electric idiot' are two of the best tracks folk implosion has put out -- very low-fi with lots of emotion and real catchy, thin guitar sounds...
