Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.
hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

At a time when popular music has been micro-marketed to the far side of ad nauseam, Declan MacManus, a.k.a. Elvis Costello, has traded on his reputation as the brightest songwriter to emerge from the new wave era to foster any number of delightful, cross-genre/generation musical surprises, including soundtracks and collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, Paul McCartney, jazz artist Roy Nathanson, and songwriting legend Burt Bacharach. The latest fruit of that generous, insatiably curious artistic spirit is this elegant partnership with Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne-Sofie von Otter. Though an admitted pop novice, Otter couldn't have picked a better confederate than Costello, an artist whose taste in songs has seldom been tainted by trend.
Together, they weave material from disparate sources--including a slate of compelling Costello material, a pair of Brian Wilson's evocative "Pet Sounds" confessionals, a Tom Waits song from Francis Ford Coppola's One from the Heart (oddly, though effectively, coupled in medley with McCartney's "Junk"), an Abba song, and the Beatles' "For No One"--into a musical tapestry of stately power and grace. Costello sparingly uses his voice as seasoning throughout, though his masterful touch is everywhere. Otter's novice pop singing reveals an easy knack for jazz phrasing that should tempt further explorations and a warmth that belies the rigidity that's so often a byproduct of classical training. Most gratifying of all, this album ultimately achieves what's become one of the loftiest plateaus in Pop music: common ground. --Jerry McCulley

Loved this CD .......2006-06-13
Who would pair Costello and an opera singer?? Elvis, and somehow it works. I really love the tone and moodiness of it and lyrics that talk about love and life, failure and success. It's soulful, in a contemplative way, music for those tucked away, rainy days .
I LOVE this CD!.......2005-09-01
Finally, an opera singer who knows how to channel her Classical training into a sound that is, as one critic aptly described it, "what pop singers would sound like if they could actually sing"! Although Elvis Costello does not join Ms. von Otter very often in the vocals, when he does they harmonize beautifully. With great melodies (some beautiful, some catchy) and sensitive (but not sappy) lyrics, this album makes a fine addition to any CD collection.
Costello Partners with Hubris and Yields Variable Results.......2005-05-08
Having just heard Elvis Costello's masterful collaboration with Burt Bacharach, "Painted from Memory", for the first time this past month, I had high hopes for this equally unusual partnership with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter released in 2001. This time, however, Costello acts as arranger and producer, and it is von Otter who is front and center on vocals. She is among the most revered of singers on the opera and recital stages, and she has impressed me in the past, in particular, with her Dejanira in the 2002 Marc Minkowski-led performance of Handel's "Hercules", among many other roles she has embodied. Here she is called upon to be a pop chanteuse, and while the beauty of her voice is inarguable in any setting, her ability to interpret the diverse lyrics in these songs is far more debatable. This is where a Marianne Faithfull, a Blossom Dearie or even a Joni Mitchell could capture more of the underlying feeling with a fraction of the vocal power von Otter can provide but with twice the nuance. There is a rather sterile sameness to the performances here, somewhat jazz-inflected in a cocktail lounge manner at times and at other times, rather morose and dirge-like.
Take, for example, her rendition of Brian Wilson's "Don't Ask (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" from the legendary "Pet Sounds" album. It moves so glacially that it actually extricates the romantic subtext almost surgically. The same can be said for Jessie Mae Robinson's "The Other Woman", which has at least Magnus Persson's vibraphone to provide relief from the tedium. She's better on the other "Pet Sounds" classic, "You Still Believe in Me", where she cannily soars with the chorus, though Costello damages it by adding some odd, muffled rapping in the background. Ironically, it is on the Costello compositions where the recording most noticeably flails. The opener "No Wonder" starts as a "Greensleeves"-like madrigal and then turns into Beatlesque pop; "Baby Plays Around" seems to suffer from exhaustion by all parties; the two Fleshquartet collaborations, "Rope" and "Just a Curio", sound somewhat like extraterrestrial hymns done in a series of minor keys; and the closing title track, "For the Stars" includes peppy, Beach Boys-sounding harmonies which escape her grasp. In fact, "Just a Curio" would have been a more appropriate title for this entire recording.
On the other hand, the Gallic flavor of Benny Andersson's accordion effectively informs her rendition of Tom Waits' "Broken Bicycles", which melds perfectly with Costello's vocal on Paul McCartney's "Junk". Speaking of Andersson, a fellow Scandinavian, von Otter admirably covers a piano-led ABBA ballad, "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room". She also displays a meticulously casual bounce on Lennon-McCartney's "For No One", though it stops rather abruptly. Von Otter acquits herself surprisingly well on the jazzy "Shamed into Love", written by another unlikely duo, Costello and Rubén Blades, and performed as almost a smokier variation of Bacharach's "Alfie". And speaking of Bacharach, she does a nice turn on the lovely "This House Is Empty Now" from the 1998 Bacharach-Costello disc. Costello and von Otter are masters of their craft, but I think some of the collaborations reflect simply irreconcilable differences. While Costello seems to have an insatiable desire to expand musically, his hubris here appears to constrain the often preternatural vocal skill von Otter displays on the opera and recital stage. Consequently, what we have here is a nice album, a generous one with eighteen tracks, that doesn't seem to capitalize on either contributor's talent fully.
what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?.......2004-04-22
Nothing's funny about this boring duo. I picked this up FREE at my library and it didn't take me too many tracks to see why it was donated. The musical arrangements are hapless and dull, and her voice is Dion without the Vegas power finale. Come to think of it, the lyrics remind me of Dion; they are as saccharine as anything Dion has ever sung. I wasted a blank CD on this limp, sleepy pairing of two otherwise good artists.
No life in her (pop) art.......2004-03-15
I am a big fan of both artists and wanted very much for this combination to work. It avoids the traditional trap of "oversinging" the pop material. But a few years after its release, in these American Idol era, is that really such a terror for pop music any more? So-called oversinging seems pretty popular these days!
The big problem is that von Otter has not found a way to communicate any emotion in this scaled-down form of singing. All her classical techniques are stripped away, and there's nothing to replace them. Sure, her voice is gorgeous, but it sounds exactly the same no matter what the lyrical content. The songs could have been made up of nonsense syllables for all the emotional life she communicates.
Deeply disappointing - but someone, somewhere, will figure out how to bring classically trained singers to the wonderful pop song repertoire that has been composed over the past 50 years. Elvis may very well be the person to do it, but not on this album.

Great sounding accompaniment piece to Pet Sounds.......2005-07-17
This album is great to listen to if you, like me, have listened to Pet Sounds millions of times and want a new variation on it. The Angry String Quartet does a great job recreating this amazing work of art, and brings to light the orchestral genius of Brian Wilson's musical and vocal arrangements. The Quartet extend most of the songs, and it is a bit awkward getting used to at first ( having listened to the original songs so many times), but in the end, it is a pleasant change.
"The String Quartet Tribute to the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds" is an interesting, and ultimately, satisfying listen. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to hear Pet Sounds in a different light or would like to understand why so many people have found Brian Wilson's music to be utter genius...and just about anyone else.

One of opera's legendary figures sings lieder........2001-08-17
The Norwegian Kirsten Flagstad was the pre-eminent Wagnerian soprano of the 20th century, but she also gave hundreds of lieder and song recitals, the pick of which bejewel this ravishing double CD. the first offers three complete song-cycles, Grieg's rippling 'Haugtussa', all pastoral maidens and brooks, Flagstad singing as light as a breeze; Wagner's 'Wesendonck-Lieder', that ghost of his masterpiece 'Tristan and Isolde', my favourite lieder cycle - this is the best interpretation I have ever heard, passionate, yearning and, in 'Im Treibhaus' and 'Traume', genuinely spine-tingling. Sibelius' enchanting songs complete the CD, with 'The Maiden's Tryst' unexpectedly lush and romantic.
The second disc of Anglo-American songs may be less demanding, but are no less delightful. Highlights include Landan Ronald's operettish 'O Lovely Night', Frank Bridge's rollicking 'Love Went A-Riding', Bax's hushed 'The White Peace', Elgar's hymn-like tribute to his vocation 'Speak Music', Delius' rapturous 'Love's Philosophy', as well as a tantalisingly muffled 1937 recording of Stephen Foster's 'Old Folks at Home'. There are also no less than four lullabies, which attests to the Victorian hangover on bourgeois tastes in the middle of the last century.
Most of these recordings date from the 1950s, so the sound is relatively clear, and if Flagstad is past her operatic prime, her ability to express intense passion with an imperiously cool technique would put most modern singers to shame. her regular accompanist, Edwin McArthur, is a model of self-effacement, quietly playful and inventive in the background. My only complaint is that, at this price, surely a lyric sheet could have been provided. There is, however, a fascinating biographical piece, detailing, amongst other things, the soprano's dubious wartime conduct.

SH*T, basically!!!.......2005-11-25
WHAT THE F*CK IS THIS??!!! please, i beg any all of you, DO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM!!! It is so bad i can't think of a word to describe it!! this album is like something your grandma's and grandad's would listen to! IT'S JUST VIOLINS!!!!!! there are no lyrics, just sh*tty violins! it would help if songs even sounded in any way like a sum 41 song!! lol! honestly! just listen to the preview of 'fat lip' and you will know what i'm talking about!! i'd give it 0 stars if i could!! overall, this CD is a big bag of SH*T!!!
what?.......2005-07-23
this should have gotten 0 stars. anything by the string quartet tribute is s***. why do these people make tributes to any good rock group? this is just patheticly made. NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!!!!! (i listened to the samplers.) it makes me wanna puke. you should not maked good hard rock music sound like s***!! Disgrace to sum 41 and any other cd like this made.
odd.......2005-07-15
this cd is odd, i must say. I wouldnt have expected anyone to do a tribute to a new band like this. Nothing against sum 41, but lets face it, their songs arent that unique or moving in any way. they arent pioneers of their genre or of anything really. they werent deserving of a string quartet tribute.
thats just my opinoin.
otherwise this is an all right cd.
they did a nice job.
by the way...
that other reviewer is right.
the samples are a bit screwed up.
as far as i know, the "still waiting" sample sounds a lot like "summer" to me.
just read.......2005-06-09
i didnt actually buy the cd but i listened to the samplers on the amazon site. i dont know if it was just me but the songs werent matched up to the right names. for example still waiting, that isnt how it goes. i should know i listen to them every day and have all their cd's. it might just be me?
I thought this would suck...........2004-10-05
Was I freakin' wrong or what? This CD is totally sick! You can play it for your friends and see if they can figure out what songs that are playing. My best friend said it is actually cooler than Does This Look Infected .... I don't know... it is prety damn good, but I think I probably like the real thing just a little bit better. But this CD really rocks and I was surprised by how good it is. It definately doesn't suck.

Customer Reviews:
Inspirational!.......2002-12-22
A magnificent recording, from the performance to the engineering. The choir sings like angels and the percussion player is alive! Who is that flutist?-- he's great!!!
Magical and Magnificent!.......2001-12-18
A CD which gets one into the Christmas spirit ... magically, and, amazingly, keeps on being magical no matter how many times it is played! This CD is an inspiration, not only for the casual listener, but for music directors, choir members, et al. As with the other CDs in this Trinity Church Boston series, there is a big, full, precise sound; choir is in-tune, enthusiastic, yet controlled: a cohesive sound! The organ is thrilling, complementing the other instruments well. CD contains a broad spectrum of carols--both old and new, heard and seldom-heard, but never jarring, nor totally unfamiliar. All are "traditional" in that they satisfy, esp. for the Christmas holidays. From a compositional point of view, these carols are "complex," and yet Brian Jones (and the choir) make them "sing" and sound "easy." Special attention should be paid to the arrangement by Alan Murchie of "Go, Tell It on the Mountain": fresh, vibrant, new, and charming! Beautifully packaged CD; well recorded; 66+ minutes of music. A great gift; valuable addition to one's musical library; a perfect accompaniment to writing cards/wrapping gifts. Surely worth the wait, if out of stock.
What sweet music.......2001-10-23
This CD is full of accessible Christmas music, beautifully sung by the superb Trinity Choir. The sound is blended, clear, and nuanced, with the dynamics and phrasing for which the choir is justly known. Those who have attended the Candlelight Carols services at Trinity over the last years will recognize some of the selections, as will anyone who has ever sung in a church choir at Christmas. The pieces range from the light and fun "I Saw Three Ships" to the traditional to the unexpected "God is With Us".
"O Little Town of Bethlehem" is a staple of any Christmas recording, especially for Trinity, since the author was once rector there. One delight on this recording is the morphing from the traditional tune to one that is less familiar -- it makes the words fresh and alive. Nicely done!
Any recording with "Tomorrow Shall be my Dancing Day" and "What Sweeter Music" deserves a permanent spot on the CD player during the Christmas season. You will find gems here to brighten your holiday season.
Celestial Experience in Choral Music.......2001-09-29
A splendid collection of seasonal treasures for choir, this CD is a must for anyone who appreciates choral music. The recording is balanced in terms of sound reverberation and beautiful blend of accomplished voices lead by knowledgeable and sensitive director, Brian Jones. Compositions and arrangements by a variety of composers from Holst to Rutter make this anthology playable not just during Advent and Christmas, but thoughout the year.
There is a warmth from this recording that envelopes the listener in a sound (as in "What Sweeter Music") that rivals anything from choirs of England or Vienna, but there is a brightness too as in "Sing We to This Merry Company" by John Rutter. Let the remarkable quality of this stunning recording wash over your senses and enjoy the wonderful artistry of this unforgettable choir.

Album Description
2004 album from Swedish artist favorably compared to vintage Radiohead, Coldplay, Jeff Buckley, & Josh Rouse. Festival/Mushroom.
Album Details
Vintage Radiohead, Coldplay, Jeff Buckley, Josh Rouse Are Just Some of the Reference Points Used by European Media When Describing the Music of Tiger Lou. Tiger Lou (Aka Rasmus Kellerman) is 24 Years Old, Swedish, Married and Likes Dogs and Movies. From the Songwriting to the Playing to the Vocals, his Debut Album `is My Head Still On?' is Scarily Good - Truly a Knockout. Rasmus Has Written Both the Music and Lyrics for the Songs on the Album, Plays all of the Instruments Except Bass and Recorded it Himself with Help from Producer Rolf Klinth at Klinthstone Studios, Stockholm, During the Winter of 2003. The Lead Single `sell Out' is Exquisite Guitar Pop that Begs for Repeated Listening.
Customer Reviews:
Watch Out Chris Martin!.......2005-12-30
Bloody Swedes! Not only are they responsible for Ace Of Base and Volvos, but you might as well blame them for Stockholm Syndrome as well. Now Sweden unleashes Tiger Lou on the world, but thankfully this boy is well worth listening to. 24 year old Swede Rasmus Kellerman (no relation to either Finland's The Rasmus or Swedish DJ Rasmus) has managed to create an album which feels like a natural progression on from A Rush Of Blood To The Head. While every second band in this current music climate is being weighted with expectations of being the next Coldplay, Tiger Lou genuinely appears to have the aptitude and musical nous to fulfil such lofty prospects. Early Tiger Lou single Sell Out is a clever pre-fame epistle that quashes any chance of young Rasmus being a cocky upstart, while the nice and sprightly sounds of Oh Horatio are similarly engaging. Warmth finds Tiger Lou loitering like Muse at the bottom end of the piano before Lowdown finishes the succinct debut with a Jeff Buckley moment. With tours alongside Josh Rouse and Heather Nova already in the bag, Rasmus will be pulling his own crowds before too long if Is My Head Still On? is any indication. Watch this space.
