The Postal Service is hands down one of my favorite bands out there...kind of sucks since Ben Gibbard (lead singer) is now part of Death Cab For Cutie, last time I knew. Being my second favorite of the 3 out there, the single includes the original, "Be Still My Heart", and a remix of "Nothing Better", and a remix of "We Will Become Silhouettes". I do not particularly care for the remix of "Nothing Better" as it was a little awkward to hear, not just the first time but everytime I go to listen to it. The remix of "WWBS" however, is pretty cool. It almost disects the song so that you get a feel of what actually went into the original and what I found was things I had missed musically in the original; it was very nicely done in my opinion. Certainly worth the money to get this one, and the others for anyone who is a Postal Service fan!

My preference of the 3 singles are (in order): "Such Great Heights", "We Will Become Silhouettes", and lastly "District Sleeps Alone Tonight" Hope you find what you're looking for though! (I have given reviews of the others, so go check them if you like Postal Service's music!!!)

This collection of singles retains all of the charm and lyric sophistication of the other Postal Service work. We Will Become Silhouettes appears on two tracks. The original is ethereal and upbeat. Matthew Dear's Not Scared Mix takes it to the next level, making the happy song even catchier. Be Still My Heart will be a favorite of Such Great Heights fans. With story lyrics and happy back beat, the song is something to listen to when you need a pick-me-up. Nothing Better (Styrofoam Remix) launches straight into electronica.

I didn't think I was missing much until I got this single, its as or more addictive than the album. Worth every penny just for "Be Still My Heart" and the remixes give the other tracks an incredibly fresh sound and feel. If you love Postal Service you will LOVE this single! Cheers.

chances are, if youre looking into this, then youve already heard the postal service and have heard the full album, including "we will become."

"be still my heart" is interesting; its a new track that happily bounces and jostles along. its good, but one cant help but think that its not quite as solid as other tracks on "give up". catchy? yes. anything to get excited over? not really.

the styrofoam "nothing better" remix is the highlight of this single. the style doesnt stray very far from the traditional production style of ol' jimmy tamb., but it just sounds so good that its welcome. though its not as bouncy as the original, the chillness factor warrants it at least a few listens. and for some reason it reminds me of "idioteque".

the "we will become..." matthews not scared remix is the obligatory remix that leaves you scratching your head. the production is minimal -- fuzzy ambient noises and a guitar strum that is repeated over and over. interesting, but it left me wondering when the loops would vary or when another element would be introduced.

then the song ended.

so there it is. a song youve heard a million times, a bouncy new song, a good remix thatll allow you to "revisit" a great song, and an abstract remix that might be good to have just to prove that youre different than any other kid who heard the postal service a year after everyone else did (most likely by downloading the album).

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

    Philips' 100-volume Great Pianists of the 20th Century series is one of the most ambitious projects ever put together by a record company. For all the debate that will surely ensue over who was chosen and who was passed over, it's obvious that careful, loving attention has gone into the selection of content for the happy 72 to be admitted to this special pantheon (certain especially significant pianists are allotted two or even three volumes, such as Vladimir Horowitz). Each of the handsomely designed, sepia-tinted volumes--adorned with a black and white photo--contains two CDs and a thoughtful essay on the artist in question. Prospective buyers should be aware that this sampler volume offers only short vignettes (averaging between two and three minutes), along with a thumbnail sketch, for each pianist. Still, it's a smorgasbord of morsels that allow you to taste some of the major trends in philosophy and approach to the instrument throughout the century (and reaching well back into the 19th), and the overlap of repertory permits some fascinating quick comparisons as style and technique have evolved. Delve into some of the artists in the series--say Alfred Brendel or Martha Argerich--and trace in greater depth the piano's identity crisis. Is it, for example, a resonantly string-like instrument ideal for pastel shadings or a steely, percussive machine meant to express the hardness of the 20th century?     This is an introductory 2-CD set to introduce a very grand series of CD's featuring the 20th Century's greatest pianists.
    As a sampler, there are some incredible jewels here, for example Nikita Magaloff's sparkling Chopin Tarantelle and Paganini Etude No.3: 'La Campanella' played excitingly by John Ogdon. There is even an early recording of Paderewski playing (predictably) Paderewski.

    This sampler seems a bit of a Euro-centric, but the editors wisely chose to include Earl Wild doing Gershwin and Roslyn Tureck doing Bach. I ended up purchasing the Andre Watts volume from this series, and wondered what it would be like to own the whole shootin' match. I saw the entire CD series on display in a top notch music store in Germany--it was overwhelming to see the line of brown covers stretching impressively across an entire wall. The sampler is a good way to have a taste of this ambitious series of the giants of piano in the 20th Century. I listen to it often with great enjoyment.

    RE: Those of you who complained/rejoiced about Gould's abscence: he is not on the sampler, true, I believe for... purposes or something along those lines. Rudolf Serkin is also not included, but both are among the "greatest pianists of the 20th Century" set.

    I was pleased after reading the list of performers to see that Gould's machine-gun jiffy-pop piano "playing" is not included. I would like to hear more of Skanavi tho.

    Although I understand that it must have been very diffiult to decide which pianists got put in the collection, let alone a two-disc sampler, I still feel that any anthology of the piano (other than one highlighting the romantic era)should contain at least one piece by Gould, yet this one doesn't. Gould has been almost unanimously hailed as one of the most influential artist of the twentieth century, yet he is not included on this disc. Other than that, a great buy.

    If you only purchase one classical piano cd in your entire life, this one should be it. All the masters, at their very best on it.

    If you have piano cd's, this should be part of that collection. I purchased one, almost not believing what I read on the jacket. I'm telling my friends about this one, as I'm aware of no other CD having all those piano masters - - at any price?)...

        You have to be a LLS fan to know of his work. This is a good 80's style relaxing blend of pop and "smooth" jazz. You will not hear this on the local radios which is a shame. Since the individual albums are out of print this is a reasonable deal.

        Combining two of Smith's harder to find records, you get a double dose of his sweeping keyboard runs anfd fusion-defining work. When Smith opts to try and convert 70s club tracks into 70s fusion tracks, the effect is a little underwhelming, but his ballads and mid-tempo tunes are unmatched in their original time period. Grooving is balanced with a healthy dose of heart and passionate playing. Good chill-out stuff, and the origins of (good) smooth jazz.

        A pretty good place to start with Lonnie, and at the price they're selling it, you really can't go wrong.

        Vierne was a wonderful composer in the line of Franck, Lekeu, Widor, Magnard, Faure, D'Indy, etc. (i.e., the Franco-Belgian school of late-Romantic [Wagnerian] chamber music). Vierne's stunning Organ Symphonies for the Cavaille-Coll organs of France form a unique body of work. And besides these, he wrote a number of excellent chamber works, solo piano works, and lieder (melodies).

        This collection of Vierne's piano pieces is a fantastic find, and I urge anyone to get it immediately before it is discontinued. This is rich, deep art, similar in ethos to Franck's and Faure's. Performances and sound are great.
