Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
Less Is More.......2005-04-14
Rod Stewart is no mean songwriter and wrote or, more usually, co-wrote some of his and the Faces' biggest hits including Stay With Me, You Wear It Well and Gasoline Alley, as well as album tracks such as Mandolin Wind. Often his songs told stories about everyday people, as with Cindy Incidentally, Pool Hall Richard and most famously Maggie May, a song he modestly buried originally on the flipside of Reason To Believe, but which went on to establish him as a major star.
However, he has always had an acutely commercial ear and the greater part of his hit singles, particularly as a solo artist, have been interpretations of earlier successes by other artists, perhaps stemming from his days in soul revues such as Steampacket and Shotgun Express, perhaps due to being insufficiently prolific. Some might argue that some of high chart placings were due more to the astute choice of songs with memorable melody lines than to his vocal performances.
Having just listened to the Rod Stewart/Faces 2CD collection Changing Faces, I can testify that his tendency to holler impassionedly on every upbeat track got to be quite exhausting, and rather surprising, given that the lesson so clearly learned from these superb originals is that less is so often more.
Singers like Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin and Curtis Mayfield sing with such effortless-sounding class and mastery, the album becomes an object lesson in quality and taste, and ranges from deep soul, country, rock and roll, Motown, British and American folk-rock, R&B, blues and balladry to the simply unclassifiable, as in Tom Waits. Though the quality is consistently high, some are more obscure than others. Those who imagined that Some Guys Have All The Luck was originally by Robert Palmer, whose version was a couple of years older than Rod's, will be impressed by the original Persuaders recording found here, and many will not know Jerry Lee Lewis's drinking song, which stalled at no. 94 in the US charts in 1968. It is good to hear Danny Whitten on the original but little known version by Crazy Horse, and Bobby Bland is sadly no longer such a household name as once it was, so It's Not The Spotlight makes a welcome close to the album.
Where available stereo mixes have been used, and this is especially welcome in the cases of Maxine Brown and Howlin' Wolf, though Motown have let the side down by once again providing mono mixes of all four the tracks they have licensed here. You don't need to be a Rod Stewart fan to enjoy this album, and arguably, it might help if you are not.
What An Odd Collection.......2002-12-30
I'm not sure why someone thought this set needed to exist. First, Rod Stewart seems an unlikely choice for such a reverent tribute - not that his career has been anything short of sensational, it's just that he's not the first artist I think of when I think of someone who is critically influential and important in shaping the direction of pop and rock music, and whose thought process I'd want to better understand. Second, other than the unifying theme of the package, these songs don't necessarily sit well together. They're a strange jumble of R&B tunes throughout the years, but have no consistent musical thread to bind them.
Another problem with the collection is that the liner notes provide zero insight from Rod Stewart himself as to *why* he chose to cover these songs. There is a short biographical sketch on Stewart, and small anecdotes about the songs and the original artists who performed them, but shouldn't a package of this sort have a dialogue with Stewart to share with the listener his inspirations? After all, that's the point of the CD, no?
The main value of the set is that it may contain a track or two that could fill out a song collection. One excellent nugget is The Persuaders version of "Some Guys Have All The Luck", which is very difficult to find elsewhere. Perhaps others will make similar discoveries.
Good old Days.......2002-12-09
I like this cd because not only do I get several of my favorite songs on it,but it takes me back to the days when I really liked living in this world of ours.I like listening to it and reliving those days over and over again.I play it for my friends and we talk about where we were, and what we wre doing at that time. It's a lot of fun.
