Thomas Dolby Does Pop Culture.......2007-07-06
It will probably come as no surprise that 'Aliens Ate My Buick' is essencially Thomas Dolby's funk album. Dolby had after all just come off some mid 80's sessions with George Clinton on his Some of My Best Jokes Are Friends album and for this Dolby baught in his band (including a small horn section) and worked his great songcraft around some powerful late 80's style grooves-all infused with Dolby's unique sense of style and humor. Some are wacky funk such as the "Hot Sauce" and the slamming "May The Cube Be With You",both featuring Clinton.But....it's not finished there. Dolby bring throws down his own funky groove with the deep "Pulp Culture",which jests about just what it says.He begins this album with a style that counterpoints the funk tunes on this;oddball swing jazz with the bouncy shuffle of "The Key To Her Ferrari" and the brooding, quircky "The Ability To Swing".There are really no ballads on this album-the closest thing being the slower crawling reggae style of "My Brain Is Like A Sieve".One highpoint on this album a lot of people will talk about is the amazing "Budepest By Blimp",which wraps slow noir jazz, light Manhattan Transfer-like funk-pop along with some of the lyrics from a Hungarian aria. All of the songs on this album are intersperced with with electronic sound samples including bits of dialog and jokes that luckily sync up perfectly with the music. This is actually Thomas Dolby's third full lengh album release. And next to his debut The Golden Age of Wireless 'Aliens Ate My Buick' is artistically one of his very best pieces of music.Unlike the too deliberatly uncommercial The Flat Earth this album's songs flow together well and are very clearly defined. And unlike a lot of Brit Funk Dolby manages to merge his wonderful sense of songcrafting into these grooves without fail,as well as flaunt some of his musical ambitions along the way without alienating the listener. So 'Aliens Ate My Buick' comes highly recommended to those interested in the music of the 1980's and great music in general.
Clever lyrics let down by tunelessness.......2007-05-13
The album opens with Key To Her Ferrari, a jazzy, orchestral piece with spoken vocal parts. Airhead is a mid-tempo ballad with some pop appeal and Hot Sauce falls within the same style, somewhat tepid although the arrangement is complex and interesting. Pulp Culture is an exemplar of the the lack of melodicism that makes this album lukewarm in comparison to his better work. The slowly lilting love song My Brain Is Like A Sieve is mildly appealing, as is the atmospheric The Ability To Swing. Budapest By Blimp is another slow ballad with atmospheric vocals and evocative instrumentation. Overall the album is disappointing, lacking the catchy hooks and quirky charms of Dolby's best tracks like Hyperactive and She Blinded Me With Science. I recommend The Best of Thomas Dolby: Retrospectacle for the most enduring work of this talented musician.
Budapest by Blimp.......2007-05-12
I bought the album on cassette when it first appeared in the late 80s. To start with, "Budapest by Blimp" is the real keeper on this CD, however, the whole album is very strong. My only complaint would be that it sounds a wee bit dated (obviously an 80s album), but just take it with a grain of salt and enjoy this enormously talented artist. The CD opens with the rocking "The Key to her Ferrari" and just gets better from there.
One of my favorites.......2007-04-18
The whole reason I bought this album at all is I saw him in concert for the AAMB tour. He and his band gave a great, energetic performance, and the lyrics to the music are witty and poignant, and the music itself is varied and fun. The production value is very good, but he and his band were excellent musicians, so I suspect it was pretty easy to make them sound great.
To address the complaint about there being no emotion - I have to mention that I watched an interview with Dolby shortly after this album came out. Airhead is derived from his experience dating a particular woman who was very smart but who had succumbed to the peer pressure on women to dumb themselves down. Dolby's songs aren't heartwrenchingly emotional - a lot of them are a bit more subtle, and some of them are just fun. Not everything needs to be deep and meaningful. "She Blinded Me With Science" isn't exactly a paragon of poetic artistry.
This remains one of my favorite albums in my collection. Give it a try and don't expect to hear New Wave music.
Really really good........2007-02-13
I've really enjoyed this album ever since it came out. On my first LP version of this album, "the Cube" was not included. In all frankness, I feel that it was a better album without it. Still, the inclusion of that candy-coated dud still does not diminish the quality of the other songs.
It has swing, its got groove. It has its good moments, its great moments, and everything in between. Just another album of good music to enjoy. What more are you expecting?
Now I'm really looking forward to his new material!
