Roland Kirk was a sublime one-man musical circus, whether playing three reeds at once, overblowing a flute, blasting a whistle to end a solo, or simply playing tenor saxophone with as much passion and invention as almost any other musician in jazz. This CD combines two complete Kirk LPs, Rip, Rig and Panic from 1965 and Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith from 1967. The former is justifiably one of Kirk's most famous records, and it has possibly the most incendiary backing group he ever recorded with--secure, inventive, and prodding. Fueled by Jaki Byard's contrapuntal comping and flights into stride and atonality, Richard Davis's edge-of-the-beat bass lines, and Elvin Jones's polyrhythmic drumming, Kirk responds aggressively. His tenor improvisations on "No Tonic Pres" and "From Byas, Bechet, and Fats" are volcanic, while his manzello (a single reed in the soprano saxophone range) is piquantly lyrical on "Black Diamonds." Always an innovator, Kirk adds electronically altered sounds to "Slippery, Hippery, Flippery" and shattering glass to the brilliant title piece. The later session is relatively subdued but still distinguished, with a more conventional rhythm section in pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Ronnie Boykins, and drummer Grady Tate. "Blue Rol" has Kirk paying glorious tribute to the Ellington reed section, playing three horns at once before using circular breathing on manzello and then turning in a tenor solo worthy of an Ellingtonian like Ben Webster or Harold Ashby. "Why Don't They Know" is percolating bossa nova, while the title tune is a beautiful ballad. This is essential Kirk, and also a perfect introduction to his work. --Stuart Broomer

This CD combines two of Roland Kirk's most celebrated albums, one volcanic, the other luscious. Rip, Rig and Panic is renowned because of the astounding line-up, Jaki Byard on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and the redoubtable Elvin Jones kickin' skins. (Jones has never sounded better.) The other, Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith, sounds like lounge jazz by comparison. The lineup is strong, but simply not in the same league as Rip, Rig and Panic. Still, the album contains some of Rahsaan's most appealing work, including the title track. In this respect it provides listeners, especially, newcomers, a good overview of the diverse landscapes of Rahsaanapolis.

This said, it would require a truck equipped with extra heavy-duty suspension to deliver the box set providing a comprehensive tour of Rahsaanapolis. Kirk was a man of profound contradictions, relentless experimentation, and an unquenchable appetite for music. He has been largely overlooked by jazz historians (to say nothing of the public!) and unfairly tagged as a novelty act because of his propensity for playing multiple horns simultaneously and actually making his own reed instruments out of bits and pieces of other reed instruments. Rock producer Billy Graham once said of Kirk, "He wasn't just angry, he was Nina Simone angry." True, and yet he was capable of playing music so fragile and beautiful it might reduce a serial killer to tears - check out I Talk With The Spirits.

One of Kirk's many contradictions was that, despite his intense need to push music into uncharted territory - frequently in several directions at once - listening to him was always a Master's Class in music history. No jazz musician has ever been so aware of his roots, or anxious to share them with you. Who else could take you from Sidney Bechet, Don Byas, and Fats Waller all the way to Burt Bacharach and Hal David - and have the trip make sense? At one point in the breathtaking album Rahsaan Rahsaan, Kirk says, "Thank you, Bird" in such a casual, comfortable tone of voice it's as though Charlie Parker had just left the room. In a sense, that's exactly what did happen, because the musicians Kirk studied came alive in his music, in his respect for them and in his confidence as he interpreted them and developed their ideas.

It's tempting to point out that Kirk was blind, and perhaps, like others before him, his stunning ear was partly attributable to this. But for Kirk, a heightened ability to listen was only the starting point. Kirk played everything he touched, and he played with unparalleled intensity. His flute playing was memorable, but his tenor sax work was simply off the map. Kirk belongs in the pantheon with Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Eric Dolphy, and John Coltrane - indeed, he's already there, it's just that the mainstream hasn't noticed yet. I'm not aware of any Rahsaan Roland Kirk CD that isn't worth the price of admission, but for veterans and first time visitors to Rahsaanapolis alike, this CD is especially select.

In reviewing the music, I found that this is not the same Rip, Rig and Panic from 1982. I cannot find any recordings from then. Where is that music?

Because he played multiple instruments at the same time Roland Kirk sometimes got the rap that he was gimmicky. He was not gimmicky, he was unique. And if you want to discuss single instruments he was a master tenor saxophonist. "Rip, Rig and Panic" is one of the most unique and passionate recordings ever made. (A word of warning: it is not music for those who like their jazz playing quietly in the background.) Not only do you get Roland at his inventive best, you also get the always fascinating Jaki Byard on piano and the fiery rhythm section of Richard Davis and Elvin Jones. And the fact that you also get a second Roland Kirk recording, "Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith," on this CD makes it a doubly appealing purchase for those who want some Kirk in their collections. While not in the same league as "Rip...," "...Edith" is a fine outing for Kirk, pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Ronald Boykins, and drummer Grady Tate. I once had the pleasure of hearing Roland play in person. He ripped as he does on "Rip, Rig and Panic."

It is kind of amazing how underatted Roland Kirk still is today. Seriously some of this stuff is a catchy as many of Miles Davis and John Coltrane's most famous works. It is truly silly, you cannot find this is any store (even borders or barnes and noble) and can only find this online. And he is backed by Elvin Jones. Sheesh are they rough on Roland or what. Someday we need to stick it to the "man" and Roland needs praise,!

I have over 40 discs by Rahsaan and it's hard to give any less than 5 stars. This really has a number of good tunes and just romps and rolls. Probably one of his more tongue-in-cheek records next to 3 sided dream. Feel free to email me about Rahsaan.

While large parts of their generation were trashing blues-based rock and searching for alternatives, Georgia's Widespread Panic eagerly picked up where the Dead and a generation of other improv-driven musicians left off. But that sense was hardly reactionary; indeed, WP's musical utopianism seems to have gleaned as much from alt-rock as the Allmans, infusing this 2001 collection with a bracing sense of adventure. Their seventh album encompasses the stylistic diversity longtime fans have come to expect, with that diversity now underscored by the walloping hard-rock edge on "Give," "Imitation Leather Shoes," and "Action Man." With vocalist John Bell's expressive, character-rich voice evoking spirits as diverse as Steve Miller, James Hetfield, and Eddie Vedder, the band's tales of jaundiced romance and bleary-eyed life are ensconced in dreamy piano ballads ("This Part of Town"), neo-psych funk ("Thought Sausage"), and even rootsy Nashville-meets-Memphis novelty ("Big Wooly Mammoth"). Widespread Rules!!.......2007-06-27

I recently crushed my foot(broken in several places) and have been recooperating with the help of W.P. Although I have been heavily medicated most of the time this is still some of the greatest music I have ever heard. I've been a Widespread fan for a while, but until recently I have only owned 3 of their CD's. In the last month I've purchased every CD they have. They just get better and better. I can't wait til I break something else!

Get some live stuff first!.......2003-04-27

Okay, I know that I'm just gonna be re-hashing what other people have already written, but I am going to say it again to pound it into your brain. Hear WSP live! I have all their albums and hardly listen to them (even their best studio albums are lame compared to their shows). I think even more so than the Grateful Dead and Phish, both bands that recorded great studio songs, Panic is only truly great live. I suggest (if possible) to get into the tape trading scene and avoid this album because every live show these guys do is tremendous. Truly some of the best group playing I have ever heard.
Little Lilly and This Part of Town are my 2 fav songs, but every song is pretty good. Entertaining but forgettable.

Another couple years, another Panic album. Another exercise in integrating traditional Southern rock into the current century. And true to form this one rocks, whispers, kicks and navigates through a variety of song styles that's even more.. err, widespread than before. There's some growling southern-fried funk, some quiet country, a touch of Spanish guitar, and more that flat-out contemporary-blues rock we all know and love. JB's voice sounds as heavy on the whiskey & cigarettes as ever. Only one warning: those who want more of the six-minute Panic jams that fleshed out their first few albums may feel like several songs are cut off too soon. On the other hand, the "let-em-save-it-for-the-live-album" crowd will find a lot to like; the tracks here have the usual scattered solos but don't stretch much past five minutes. Once again we're reminded that improvising is WP's cherry, but it's the songwriting that makes up the whole sundae.

Ah, but the double-disc package has something to please the fans in both camps. As a seeming concession to the jam-happy part of the fan base, the extra live disc is a 26-minute reminder that their dynamic stage energy hasn't gone anywhere. The instrumental "Action Man" roars where the studio version simply burns. I'm still sitting on the fence as to whether this or Till the Medicine Takes is the better album for neophytes, but I'm leaning toward Don't Tell the Band because of the second CD. Want a nice energetic ray of sunshine? This'll do nicely.

not as good as earlier albums.......2002-03-13

When I first bought "Don't Tell the Band," I knew to expect something different. In an interview, lead singer John Bell said that this album was going to be an exit from what they are used to doing, as well as what their fans are used to hearing. "Big Wooly Mammoth," is a solid jam, but most of the other songs just don't stand up to their past work, which is five stars. If you're a Spread-Head, you already have had this album for months. If you don't have it, I would only buy after getting their earlier work.

Widespread releases another solid album.......2002-02-20

Widespread Panics newest release, Don't Tell the Band, is a great album. They show a wide variety of musical talent. Everything from blues to hard rock appears on Don't Tell the Band. Although they really have to be seen live in order to capture their true talent, they did a good job putting this album together.

The musicianship on the studio part of the album is perfect. All of the members of the band interact well with each other. The different instruments play their parts and support each other excellently.

The 2nd cd in the 2 cd album with the album captures Widespread in the environment they play best in. Live. If you are just getting into Widespread Panic this is a good way to hear them. You get the best of both worlds. The straight forward studio recordings and the awesome live performances.

An absolute riot, and a lot of great (if brief) music!.......2002-08-02

What a wonderful project. Pianist extraordinaire Guy Livingston has assembled 60 pieces for piano, each under one minute in length, from composers well-known and obscure, and put them all together in this delightful collection. Some of the composers you'll recognize are Englishman Dan Warburton and American William Bolcom, but all of the pieces are worth noting. Some use electronics, percussion, or prepared piano, and Livingston's pleasant speaking voice can be heard on more than one, but it's always his confident and skillful piano that's at center stage. Some are hysterical, like the piece by Ketzel Cotel, who turns out to be a cat belonging to a New York City composer, and some are quite serious and demanding. But best of all, if you don't like something, wait a minute, and some else will replace it!
A great album to have going in the background -- if you don't mind having your mind and your attention twisted around periodically -- or to listen to while you stare at nothing.

Overall good, with a couple bombs.......2004-10-06

I bought this last night and was initially impressed. When I got to "thought sausage" however, the train ran off the tracks. Seriously, it is something you'd hear at a junior high talent show. Just terrible. I guess most albums have a bomb or two. That being said, I like the album overall especially "part of town", "del grillo" and "don't tell the band". It's not as good as their zenith-Til the Medicine Takes, but hey, that's hard to top. I am a huge WSP fan. I would recommend it.

Could be worse.......2002-04-19

Not necessarily "bad," good songs on here for sure, just definitely not up to the band's previous studio efforts...especially considering how strong it's predecessor was.

Make sure you get the bonus live CD.......2001-10-10

The version of this album that I bought contained an unadvertised bonus live CD. I don't know if all versions of this album have this bonus live CD. There is another version of this album that does specifically list the extra live disc. You should get that one instead of this one to be sure you get the live CD.

The live CD is 26 minutes long and is a pretty good representation of how good the group sounds in concert. The music is fantastic, except for a horrible piano solo in the middle of track 3. When used as a rhythm instrument, the keyboards do add some depth to the songs. But, the keyboard solos can be pathetic. This one is on a par with Chopsticks.

The studio album is fairly typical, some great songs and some bad ones. Widespread Panic hasn't put out a perfect studio album since the first two.

BIG WOOLY MAMMOTH!!!!.......2001-09-27

Widespread Panic is one of those bands that really gets to the soul of music. This album reflects that in songs like Case Del Grillo and Old Joe. I was stunned by some of the differences in this album from their previous efforts. The production value of their music has increased in every release and this one doesn't let you down. The range is incredible. From slow ballads to harder rockin songs and finally Big Wooly Mammoth.
The big puzzler on this album is what, exactly JB is singing in Thought Sausage.
I highly recommend this band. They are incredible in concert and it's one of those shows you have to see because the album is nothing like the show.
Highly recommended for all you freaks out there!

Another great one...........2001-07-23

Before i got "Don't Tell the Band," I bought "Til the Medicine Takes" and "Space Wrangler." I have heard that Widespread is much better live than on studio albums. I cannot believe all of that because I've never heard this band live and I think their albums are unbelievable. This album follows just where the others left off. I listen to Widespread mainly for the diversity. There is not much you can say except it is just great music. I definatley reccomend this album to long-time Widespread fans and to people who have never heard of the band.

This is a great album. In a time when most albums have one or two good tracks, this one really stands out with none of the songs being merely "filler." DJ Silver is versatile and makes dance music that never gets boring or too repetitive. It's a great album to listen to while watching Stanley Kubrick's "2001" with the sound off.

Cream Floats.......1999-07-13

I bought Don't Panic after I saw Dj Silver's name on the back of a few really cool remixes that I have. So I took a chance and got this release. If you're into techno this is some very cool sh##. His Sweetdreams remake gets me everytime. It's very playful and loose. I also heard that all his gear got stolen half way through the production so nuff respect for even getting it done. Do yourself a favor and Don't Panic Silver's got techno by the balls.
