By all indications, Ricky Martin's Unplugged opus should be an easy, effortless sell. The charismatic singer is in fine vocal form, backed by a tight band. He makes some interesting set list selections ("Gracias Por Pensar En Mi," "Asignatura Pendiente"). But Martin is also coming off 2005's commercially disappointing Life, which didn't even reach gold status (sales of 500,000 copies). That's a long way down from his Loca peak. It gives Unplugged, then, the whiff of an artist grasping for old glories. Martin was wise to include standouts "Perdido Sin Ti" and "Vuelve," which still shimmer with a lush pop sheen. Both are from 1998's Vuelve disc, still Martin's strongest effort to date. But new tracks "Con Tu Nombre," "Tu Recuerdo," and "Pegate" come off like unremarkable rehashes of past hits. Instead of looking back, this talented singer should be searching for real ways to reinvent his sound and to make his music exciting again. --Joey Guerra

Completely ANGELIC.......2007-06-17
If you thought you loved Ricky Martin you have NOT lived until you have heard this album. I love his music and I find it takes me back to Puerto Rico when I listen to him but this album not only takes me back there it TRANSPORTS me to the heart of Viejo San Juan. This album is "el mar que de podentro".
To hear a track like "Maria" knocked down about 25 notches from that crazy energetic totally loveable regular release and hear Ricky enjoying every sylable of the song is a JOY to my ears. I can hear in his voice that he is performing for the love of performing not for the want of fame or fortune. He is there because he wants to sing, hands down he loves what he does and well, he's one of the BEST at what he does! I also fell in love with "Perdido Sin Ti" on the "La Historia" album and it has a personal significance in my life but this live version is nothing short of an Angel sining to my heart.
He is performing on stage with Tommy Torres who has to be one of the quintesential Puerto Rican artists alive today and they are jamming. Anyone who understands what "Jam" means you will WANT to hear this album.
If you were hesitant to buy, hesitate NO more, RUN and buy this album I can guarantee that you will not be disapointed. If you are, well you aren't a true RMMII fan....
Fabulous artistry.......2007-06-06
Ricky reveals incredible depth, sincerity, and artistry in this production. An unplugged should speak to the audience in an intimate manner and Ricky has definitely achieved a unique level of expressiveness that sips through every verse and every commentary from the artist. I am happy and proud to see Ricky shine brighter than ever both as an acclaimed artist, entertainer, and philanthropist.
Fabuloso!.......2007-03-20
¡Esta canción es asombrosa! Gran trabajo Ricky.
I really love this song, and being in love with latin music, i thought this album was amazing. Ricky martin has done it again. Wow!
amazing!.......2007-03-12
What an incredible CD from the ultimate performer. If you're a true Ricky fan, you should also purchase the accompanying DVD to this CD. He returns back to what he knows best....ENTERTAINING! I would definately recommend this CD to anyone that loves Latin pop!
GOZALO!!!!!!!
Excellent!.......2007-03-09
This is a phenomenal cd that I truly enjoy listenig to. The acoustic format lends such a different dimension to his music and proves that good music does not need heavy and zealous production to be brilliant -- it shines on its own merit. He is in fine voice and I believe this cd emphasizes that Ricky is not a flash-in-the-pan product of music industry sharks out to capitalize on his good looks and charisma. With nothing to hide behind, an acoustic venue such as this shows an artist's true talent, for good or bad. Ricky's talent speaks for itself here and proves him to be the true musician and artist he has never received proper credit for.

This soundtrack (along with Ry Cooder's for Paris, Texas and Ennio Morricone's for Once Upon a Time in America, to name two other examples) is the kind of music that CDs were made for. Some of it is so delicate, so quiet, that it could disappear underneath the rumble and noise of a vinyl LP. You'd never know this was the score to a comedy--even a gentle wisp of a comedy like Bill Forsyth's picture. Some of it could pass for Scottish- flavored ambient music by Brian Eno. "The Rocks and the Water" seems to rise up like the tide with electronic calls that suggest the music of whales or dolphins. The sound of the sea whispers behind several atmospheric tracks, but Knopfler's guitar is also featured up-front some of the more overtly melodic tunes. The overall impression is luminous and evanescent as the Northern Lights. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
not all of the music from the film is on this CD.......2007-04-14
Great movie.
However, if you liked the music as it was played by the little band featured in the movie, you will not find that music on this CD.
And that is what a soundtrack should be.
All of the music, esp. if it's good, from the movie on a CD.
This soundtrack is more a Mark Knopfler CD and not the complete soundtrack from the movie "Local Hero".
A good example of a great soundtrack CD is the Tom Petty music from the movie "She's the One".
That CD has all of the music from that movie without exception.
The other reviewers here talking about the great "scottish folk music" on this CD are just wrong.
In the movie "Local Hero" there are fine examples of it, but on this soundtrack, there are only little snippets of it.
I have paid for the product, but not received it.......2007-01-21

Local Hero .......2006-08-23
This track captures the spirit and essence of Ireland and its Celtic atmosphere. The sound of seas crashing on rocks and shore and roar of distant thunder. Although there is a variety of different themes with each track the haunting traditional Irish themes are just so powerful and moving. I loved this CD. The music is fabulous. I am a great fan of Mark Knopfler. He is so talented.
only good if you like the film.......2006-08-19
I have always loved this movie. The theme...would you give up your materialistic and safe world for passion, simplicity, honesty, etc? Have we created a perfect world that once we leave it and view from it the outside, may not be that perfect? Would you leave it all behind to live on a coastal Scottish town? Is killing yourself for the imposed luxuries really worth it?
Knopfler's theme to the movie re-creates the utopian vibe of the movie. The theme is done in a variety of styles and tempos.
I would imagine that anyone that owns this is in a somewhat cult of enthusiasts for this beautiful yet quirky film.
One of the best soundtracks... EVER.......2006-03-14
In 1983, at the height of the Dire Straights' reign of pop music ("Money for Nothing"), Dire Straights lead song writer Mark Knopfler scored the soundtrack of a delightful "little movie that could" called Local Hero.
"Local Hero" (14 tracks, 43 min.) creates the atmosphere of the Scottish scene in which the movie is set, in which a US expat is sent to convince a small seaside town to sell their interest in a beach so that a "big bad" US oil company can explore ir for oil. The mostly instrumental soundtrack is superb from start to finish, creating a wonderful mood. The opener "The Rocks and the Water" sets the stage, just superbly brought of what the Scottish seaside is like. Knopfler's guitar virtuoso gets a workout in a couple of tracks, but it never deteriorates from the overall mood. Other outstanding tracks include "The Mist Covered Mountains", gently bringing in a local band playing a sorrowful yet hopefull tune, and "Stargazer", in which you can just see and smell the open Scottish sky. There isn't a single weak track on the album, frankly. This album remains a soundtrack by which others should be measured by.
The best known track remains the very last one "Going Home (Theme of Local Hero)", which is as close as you'll get to the Dire Straights' sound, and it inevitably appears on Dire Straight live and compilation CDs. But it is the anamoly on this gorgeous soundtrack. This album was originally released in 1983, when I bought it on vinyl, and I bought it when the CD came out in 1990. Isn't it about time for a re-release on remastered sound?

Awesome.......2007-03-07
If you like alternative music, then you'll love this band. If you like Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Deftones, or the likes, then give them a try... Despite being seen as an one hit wonder band, every song is as enjoyable as any other. I never skip any song while listening to them.
Nirvanabees with a catchy single.......2006-04-19
"Bound for the floor" got steady radio play on the late, lamented WDRE in 1996, and why shouldn't it have? The fragmented guitar chords are very catchy and distinctive. Musically, these guys seem to fit somewhere between Slverchair and Failure in the school of Nirvana soundalikes. This isn't a bad album by any stretch, it's just a very nondescript...generic if you'd like...document of where indie rock was at post-Cobain, yet before godawful stuff like Limp Bizkit and MTV buried it as far as the mainstream is concerned. No one would ever accuse me of being anywhere on the radar, what with Metal Machine Music and the Conet Project being staples in my household. Maybe that's why Local H doesn't really do it for me...it's not weird enough, they were aiming at the radio and those fifteen year old girls with the peace frogs. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but will anyone be listening to this album in 30 years? 20?
And you just dont get it........ You know your so pathetic.......2005-12-04
Those lyrics were stuck in my head for about a month after listening to BOUND FOR THE FLOOR. I bought this album because of that song and I literally and i mean LITERALLY have heard the song over 100 times and I never get tired of it. BOUND FOR THE FLOOR is definatly one of my favorite rock song of all time, but it isn't my favorite rocks song of all times it just one of my favorites, but serously it really is a catchy song. You havent heard the song yet listen to it. ps; the other tracks arent all that good.
A Great Introduction to Local H.......2005-11-30
Local H is one of the first bands that I got acquainted with strictly through my own curiosity: I saw "As Good As Dead" at the store, and I bought it. I didn't know any of the songs, and was able to appreciate the album immediately for what it is: a great collection of wonderful music. Each track on this album could be a hit.
What is most amazing is the great versatility of this band. A well-written, tender "Eddie Vedder" is juxtaposed with the hard, screaming vocals of "Back in the Day." What's most amazing is that I enjoy each of these songs equally.
This album is everything I love about Local H in one album. While I may not play it as much as "Hamfisted" or "Pack up the Cats," this album still contains their catchiest, most well-written songs, and is a great introduction to this band if you are yet to experience their tremendous talent.
Back In The Day: Local H's Big Break.......2005-08-16
Back in the 90's there was a little band known as Local H. Two talented musicians who strived to be original and separate from the rest of the hard rock herd. "As Good As Dead", the band's 1st major label release is a straight-up and honest rock songs aimed to please the Jerry Lewis and Kurt Cobain in everyone. Songs such as "High Fivin' MF" and the ominous "Bound For The Floor" poke fun at out-of-fashion hipsters and just make fun of themselves basically. While other songs such as "Back In The Day" and "Fritz's Corner" display the absolutely rocking and heavy side of Local H. But there is also another side of Local H that the listener discovers once "As Good As Dead" reaches tracks like "Ok" and "No Problem". These songs unveil the alterna-rock and almost sensitive side to Local H. All around "As Good As Dead" is a solid introduction to Local H and what they stand for, humor and sarcastic rock n' roll. I definitely recommend Local H to anyone who enjoys Nirvana and Queens Of The Stone Age.

Umph's=Greatness.......2006-12-02
Tyler, clearly you don't much about good musicianship. This band, especially the guitarists are the some of the best musicians around today. Umphrey's is not trying to be anybody, that is the most inaccurate statement i've heard in awile. In fact it's the opposite, they blend soo many different styles and genres, from blues to jazz to reggae to rock, that you cannot put a finger on their music. They can play anything and they are the tightest band around right now. Go see them live and you will be amazed and don't listen to "tyler"
Unimpressive.......2006-03-11
I saw Umphrey's McGee at the Chicago theatre and have to say I was a little disappointed. I hadn't heard their music before but had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, I can't say I was overly impressed. Here are my impressions - their music is just O.K. and the vocals (what little they have) are horrendous - off key and painful to listen to. During the show I couldn't help but get the impression that Umphrey's was trying to follow in the footsteps of the dead and phish - the music and attitude is undeniably "phishesque". Perhaps Umphrey's is trying to cash in on the void left by their absence, but truth is Umphrey's just isn't at the same level. The extraordinary musical talent found in Phish and the Dead is noticeably missing in Umphrey's. All that is left is a somewhat impressive light show and a theatre saturated with patchouli oil and herb. This is probably why the vast majority of their crowd consisted of high schoolers. Eager to be there for the "experience" and atmosphere, they simply didn't care that the music was sub-par or just didn't know any better.
better once youve heard it live.......2006-01-06
but there are so many tracks that are so much better live. dont get me wrong, i love this cd, but it dosent compare to live versions of most of the songs. all of the songs are great, but when played live, even when they arent jammed on are just better than whats on the cd. for instance, uncle wally on this cds okay but not as good as it is live and when its played electric.
all in all a great album. nothing too fancy and white mans moccosins are still some of my favorite um songs even with all their new stuff out
Keepin in Real.......2005-12-17
Sexy album. I have seen Umphreys a number of times, and have quite a bit of their music, and this is my go to when I want some Umphreys. I like it better than Anchor Drops (which is also great), because it feels a little more open and free, AD can get dense and heavy at times (which is good, because it doesn't just sound like more of the same).
I like the use of acoustics as lead guitars in Uncle Wally and Water. Andy's Last Beer is a song anyone will like. Ringo, Roulette and Hurt Bird Bath are very very sexy, but my favorite song (which I have yet to hear live) is 2nd Self, mainly because of the last minute of so, which is a nice little guitar jam...BUT IT, LISTEN TO IT!
(and read the liner notes, they're fun)
Not your average white band.......2005-07-29
"Local Band Does O.K." is far superior than "Anchor Drops" in my view. If you liked AD, you'll want LBDOK.
Some have compared UM to Phish, but I don't hear it. These guys ain't about one guy as much as Phish.

For their 10th album, the veteran Irish ensemble has gathered 13 traditional and newly composed tunes. These are transformed via singer/fiddler Mairéad ní Mhaonaigh¹s Gaelic-speaking Donegal birthright and gussied up by the group¹s modern yet reassuringly earthy acoustic arrangements. The set list includes several of the jaunty dance tunes that are the soul of Irish music; Is the Big Man Within/Tilly Finn¹s Reel is an especially fine example. But Ní Mhaonaigh¹s fragile, girlish soprano creates many of the album¹s most memorable moments, Adieu My Lovely Nancy and a lullaby, Dun Do Shuil linger in the heart and ear. She and her husband, accordionist Dermot Byrne, own a pub in a small village called Teelin and it must be a great place for musicians to swap songs and tell tales. Indeed, the entire album has home-town warmth to it, a sense of achieved heritage that is at once soothing and invigorating. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Altan album after a series of slumps (the best since Island Angel).......2006-08-02
In my opinion, Altan hasn't released a single good album since Island Angel until now. After the death of Frankie Kennedy, they got worse and worse, culminating in the horrible Blue Idol with irrelevant guest artists and poorly conceived tracks. However, that appears just to be a slump.
Local Ground picks up right where Island Angel left off, showing a mature band in top form. "Eirigh 's Cuir Ort Do Chuid Eadaigh" is one of my favorite songs and hearing Altan perform it is such a delight. Mairéad ní Mhaonaigh's voice is perfect for this song and it reminds me of Altan's recording of Dulaman several years earlier. The sets on this album are impeccably performed and the guests on this album are both relevant and sensitive to the power of Altan's playing.
Overall, an excellent CD that rivals the playing on their first albums. I highly recommend it!
Simply masterful.......2006-05-15
It's simple really. Just put together great tunes and fine musicians; stir in a judicious mixture of traditional and recently-penned music - making sure you include a couple of memorable songs - and you have an Altan album. It's a formula that has kept the Donegal group near the top of Irish traditional folk for 20 years. After all that time you could forgive them if their 10th album showed signs of staleness or repetition. Instead, absolutely to the contrary, "Local Ground" exudes a freshness and pared-back honesty that must be the envy of those who have yet to master Altan's "simple" formula.
The beautifully simple Gaoth Dobhair song "Arise Now and Dress Yourself" - which we heard Clannad do decades ago - opens the album sounding as crisp and new as if it had just been minted. Other trad. songs, including "Adieu, My Lovely Nancy", "Amhran Pheadair Bhreathnaigh" and "The Wind and the Rain", are also delivered with straightforward grace and strength by Mairead ni Mhaonaigh. The jigs, reels and other tunes are mostly "trad: arr.", and beautifully played, with twin fiddles, accordion and fretted instruments taking turns to feature. Alongside these older tunes stand a wonderful pair of more recent efforts, one by band member Daithi Sproule ("The Roseville") and the other by rising legend Peadar O Riada ("Sport"). Each stakes a claim to be the album's most memorably jaunty tune. If pushed I'd have to say that the beautifully crisp mandolin work of Ciaran Curran, which defies the feet to remain still, inclines my vote towards "Sport".
As the album title implies, Altan have gone back to their roots for this effort, with Donegal music a strong feature. As a result "Local Ground" exudes a powerful and fresh energy for their tradition, and re-launches the band into a part of the stratosphere inhabited by precious few others on the folk scene.
Smooth and Sweet.......2006-05-06
Altan has been doing this a while, and they've got a knack for it. I could write paragraphs about them and lose you halfway through, but I won't try that.
If you're new to Altan, this is a good CD to get. I think it will encourage you to try others. If you're a longtime fan, you'll appreciate the craftsmanship and you won't be disappointed. This is one I recommend to anyone who wants to add to their traditional collection.
Great Instrumentals, Fair Vocals.......2005-11-18
Altan is a wonderful group and they occasionally issue some really good songs but, in my opinion, their strength is in their instrumental selections. LOCAL GROUND is an album that demonstrates this well.
I don't understand the songs because I don't speak the language. Still the voice is pleasant and the tune more so. They do a fine job. The instrumentals, however, need no translation. They are finely crafted, exquisitely mixed and a joy to hear.
If you like traditional or modern Celtic music, Alta should certainly be among your favorites. This album is not too shabby either.
Altan -- timeless celtic soul music .......2005-05-03
Not having heard Altan before, I took a chance on LOCAL GROUND, convinced by those who said this was one of their best, and I'm certainly glad I did -- the format is songs with lovely vocals by Maread Ni Mhaonaigh, who also plays fantastic fiddle, alternating with instrumentals, lively toe-tapping jigs and medleys of reels. I listen to all sorts of music, I'm not immersed in this style, and so I lack the knowledge to compare this album to other traditional Irish music. I do know Altan has the reputation of being the finest of its kind in the world, and based on LOCAL GROUND I can see why. Absolutely timeless, this is music that humans might have made from the beginning of time and might be making until the end of time, with joy, sorrow, love, regret, nostalgia, longing, and sheer celebration of being alive another day!

This Is What It's All About!.......2006-06-13
Several artists have covered the Beatles' songs "Fool On The Hill" and "Eleanor Rigby" (Sarah Vaughan, Sergio Mendes, Petula Clark & Joan Baez, to name but a few), and very well, but none have done so as beautifully as Bobbie Gentry. These are just a couple of highlights from this new CD release of Gentry's DELTA SWEETE and LOCAL GENTRY albums, both on this one disc. Years ago, I wrote to Capitol/EMI and Collectibles, suggesting this same combination, knowing that these two companies specialize in "twofers." I never expected it to happen, so it's a dream come true, thanks to Australia's Raven label.
Commercial failures at the time of their release, both albums featured here are GREAT, from start to finish. Here we have an original, creative artist at the top of her game, who, somehow, slipped through the cracks in the general public's collective imagination. "Ode To Billie Joe" and "Fancy" are but the tip of Gentry's iceberg, and it was smart of Raven to NOT use these songs as bonus tracks in order to attract buyers. Masterpieces though these songs are, they're on every Bobbie Gentry compilation currently available, and don't need to be here in order to bolster the release of these albums, presented here in their entire, original sequences. Instead, two of the bonus tracks are reprised from Capitol's expensive import compilation, THE CAPITOL YEARS: ODE TO BOBBIE GENTRY. The first, "Stormy," is a stunning, acoustic rendition of The Classics IV hit, and as far as I'm concerned, it blows the original right out of the water. Understated and just plain gorgeous! (only Santana's version comes close, but its style is completely different). The second bonus track is a surprising take on Donovan's "Skip Along Sam." The third is a lovely performance of "Away In A Manger" (this one's kind of rare), but I'm glad it's last, as I won't listen to it out of season. I would have preferred to have "Show Off" instead, from the same compilation, or "Steal Away," which would fit here perfectly, but mine is a very small quibble.
What we have here are two solid albums of wonderful, swampy country-pop music that are wholly unique, sung in a rich, smoky contralto voice that could not be mistaken for that of anyone else (Gentry does have a few things in common with Dusty Springfield: both singers might be classified as "blue-eyed soul," they each used a rather breathy technique; and both were entranced by the lure and lore of the American South).
The string arrangements used on THE DELTA SWEETE and LOCAL GENTRY have a distinctive flavor that I've rarely heard anywhere else; sweeping, grand gestures that seem to capture the very South itself, with all of its drama, contradictions, humor and very deep sadness. It's not quite "country" music, nor is it Cajun or folk, although one can discern mixtures of all three here and there. "Come Away Melinda" is a devastating post-apocalyptic scenario depicting the unearthing of an old picture album by a little girl who has survived, never having known the world as it once was. Spine-tingling. "Casket Vignette" is a bit of black humor set in an undertaker's office. "Refractions" is a spellbinding description of a beautiful nightmare, and "Parchman Farm Blues" is a prickly cover of a Mose Allison tune, about a man rotting away in prison ("...all he ever done was shoo' his wife..."). Bobbie makes a sassy "Big Boss Man" her own, while her original, "Ace Insurance Man," is a hilarious soap opera about sex and small town gossip, with a slapstick ending, set to a contagious Louisiana beat. "Courtyard" is a sparkling, sun-dappled ballad that is heartbreaking in its beauty.
The oft-covered "Tobacco Road" sums up the quality of both of these albums: mysterious, majestic, melancholy and joyous all at the same time. For me, it's a definitive reading.
Gentry's career may have been brief, but she rarely faltered, and these are her two best albums, in my opinion, without a single lemon in the bunch. Buy this CD while you still can!!! (Now, can we please have a CD release of PATCHWORK)?

Local H first struck during the post-grunge tide of the mid-'90s, and critics often boxed the band's early albums in with the sea of other Nirvana-worshipping artists. With Here Comes the Zoo, though, the Illinois duo sounds less like some wannabe Northwest outfit and more akin to Southern California stoner rock, with a classic rock kick. The psychedelic, sludgy riffs, thudding bass lines, and pressing heaviness to songs like "(Baby) Wants to Tame Me," "Half-Life," "What Would You Have Me Do?" and "Rock 'n' Roll Professionals" (featuring Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age), make Local H sound like a poppier version of bands like QOTSA, Fu Manchu, and Nebula. The harder metal edge and spacy instrumental passages work well on the album, but the band still seem to be struggling between taking the leap of faith to join their more experimental stoner-rock contemporaries and playing less interesting, radio-ready hard-rock songs (like "Hands on the Bible" and "Keep Your Girlfriend"). Hopefully Local H will side with the former, as the album's tripped-out, feedback-heavy ending shows these boys do have some Pink Floyd influences after all, and it'd be a shame to let them go to waste. --Jennifer Maerz

good album.......2006-05-17
I really enjoy this album. Local H is better than most post grunge bands. My favorite song is "Hands On The Bible".
My least favorite H album, still got tons of listens outa' me though........2006-05-02
Here Comes the Zoo is likely my least favorite Local H album - But I still suggest you buy it, as despite this, it's a great album. By no means would I say in any way sort or form this is a bad album, as I stated above, although it's my least favorite my favorite band I still love it, and it has some of my favorite songs from there. It starts out with a some-what known H song - Hands on the Bible, which isn't one of my favorites but I must say the lyrics are powerful. Half-Life though, is. A catchy hard-rock song - the kind we love from H. The only couple songs I somewhat dislike on here are (Baby Wants to) Tame Me - Which isn't bad, but I think is weak lyrically and I don't care for the "Waaaa" Scott Lucas sings in parts of the song, not bad, but not great either. Creature Comforted would have to be the only other I'm kinda "meh" about, although the verses are good, and lyrically strong - the chorus is bleh, still not a bad song. Other than those two, this is a damned good album. Overall my favorite ( and quite possibly my favoite H song next to maybe Lovey Dovey ) is Bryn Mawr Stomp. Freakin' brilliant. Buy this album - it's not H's best by any means, but buy it anyways, as it's still awesome.
Buy this CD!!!.......2004-04-14
This CD rocks!!!! Local H is back in a BIG way and I'm so glad. I saw them open for STP years ago and I feel like they're back and sounding better than ever. I'll be listening to this CD for years to come!
Amazing.......2003-11-28
Wow, now this is an amazing piece of work. Best album I heard in a long time!
An awesome (and little known) album.......2003-05-04
Scott has crafted an all time rock masterpiece with this album. After the release of pack up the cats, I laughed at the thought of Local H putting out good music ever again(hey, that album was pretty bad....somehow I think Joe's departure was related closely). When I heard this album, I was shocked. Every track is solid. There isn't a bad song on it. This album may actually be better than As Good As Dead(although that remains as my favorite....it was the soundtrack to my teenage years). I feel bad about the loss of popularity of Local H. They once had videos on MTV that I saw during daylight hours even! Now, they hardly draw a crowd at their concerts. I almost feel bad for Scott, being that talented and getting no recognition. But on the other hand, his brash display of bitter, angry drunkeness when I saw them in concert took away my sympathy. Regardless, buy this cd....and As Good As dead, if you don't already have it.

The H is the Best.......2007-01-05
Personally, I think this is one of the best live edited albums I own and have heard. If you've never heard Local H, this is the CD you must get to realize that you're missing out great rock music. Their classic Fritz's Corner is worth the purchase. When I play this at parties or in the car my friends always ask: are you sure there are only 2 guys on stage? This is the best 2 men band you'll hear, it's not just about being heavy, but of sending a message through music. If you're sick of commercial music, pay attention: The H is the BEST!!!!
A must have for Local H fans which should be everyone.......2005-11-27
I have seen Local H twice in concert and had a great time. Since Scott and Brian play about 300 songs you never know what you are going to get so it is great to hear some of the stuff live like Creature Comforted and manipulator which is rarely played.
I SAW THEM LIVE HA HA HA.......2005-10-10
Keep in mind while you're listening to this album that unless otherwise noted there are only two guys on stage.
It's interesting that this album and the last three Local H albums have all been released on different record companies. It's great that after all this time, not at all being multiplatinum bestsellers, that these guys still do what they do. LIVE 05 has to be their best album. You'd rarely say that about a live album, but with this band it's no surprise. This is the only way to truly capture the energy of this band, and this album shows you why they are one of the last few real rock bands in the world right now, and why they're the only band that deserves the success they've never had.
alive in rockin '05.......2005-09-14
what can you say? Scott Lucas and Brian St. Clair now show the true brunt of their power with this fantastic life punch. Anyone who has seen the H in concert knows that these guys don't hold back, say what they want, play without mercy, and always deliver a show of a lifetime. you will not be disappointed

The title of the fourth song on Local H's third album sums up the spirit of the release: "Hit the Skids, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Rock." Ever since its emergence on the hard rock scene four years ago, the band has been lambasted for blatantly mimicking Nirvana. At first Local H resented such criticism, but now they've stopped worrying and learned to simply rock. Pack Up the Cats is the band's finest offering by far, matching the energy and volume of past releases but incorporating stronger melodies and hooks than in the past. The first single, "All the Kids Are Right," starts like a drawling Everclear ballad, then launches into a soaring chorus straight from the Oasis songbook. Other tracks, such as "Cha! Said the Kitty" and "What Can I Tell You," are less original but equally appealing. These cats have finally come of age. --Jon Wiederhorn
Customer Reviews:
A Well-Produced Album.......2005-11-30
Local H extended their versatility with this album. With "Hamfisted" they proved they could rock hard; with "As Good As Dead" they demonstrated their ability to write some very catchy tunes. With this album, "Pack up the Cats," they exceeded all expectations. Due to this masterpiece of their career, I tend to dislike any of Local H's later works. This album is simply unable to be outdone.
Each song on this album is perfectly placed in a sequence that evokes dynamic emotions that greatly enhance the effect of each song on the listener. Sound effects such as cats meowing are utilized, but not overused, to tie the songs together; many times the tracks have changed without the listener knowing it. The focus is put on the album as a whole, and not on any specific 'singles' as is so prevalent with the popular artists of today.
And yet this album rocks hard as well. The listeners who appreciated "Hamfisted" will enjoy the opening track with the lyrics "All right, Oh yeah" repeated to the constant thump of the beat. For the listeners who prefer the poppy singles of "As Good As Dead," meshed in amongst the wonders of the album are gems such as "All the Kids are Right," and "Fine and Good."
Every song on this album is wonderful in its own right; the amazing feat of this album is not that it is a pleasure to listen to the songs, but that it is possible to listen to it over and over again, without any desire to remove it from your player.
The best album by the most unabashed ROCK band ever........2005-09-10
"The soundtrack of youthful aggression." That's rock music right there, and if a story of meteoric rise to fame followed by a harrowing plummet into obscurity and disintegration doesn't strike you as rock 'n' roll, you probably still listen to Michael Bolton.
Grimly prophetic -- "Pack Up the Cats" could have been Local H's breakout record, but hopes were dashed by corporate tomfoolery, and a lack of promotion sent these cats packing back to Illinois to regroup -- this is the H's best record to date, no contest.
Stack it next to "Dark Side of the Moon" -- "Pack Up the Cats" is among the greatest concept albums ever made. It's that simple. The songs bleed into one another via unexpected bursts of guitar squelch, recorded phone conversation, and other bits of found sound that add to the cohesively unusual feel of this album. It's something familiar and far out at the same time.
Tracks like "She Hates My Job" are enhanced by simple yet expertly placed blues slide guitar, and there are a couple riffs, such as the opening electric guitar hit of "Fine and Good," that rank among the best moments in rock guitar for sheer head-nodding power.
Even transition pieces, like the slow burning "Stoney," which takes on a cool, sinister vibe before seguing into the Sex Pistols-by-way-of-"Back in the USSR" clang of "Laminate Man," are, for once, an indispensible component of this album. Rather than mere throwaway "breaks," they're an integral part of what ends up being one long and excellent song. Once the brazen whollop of "All Right (Oh Yeah)" hits your ears, you'll be hard-pressed to want to turn this record off.
Ahhhh.....Local H's finest........2005-07-29
In my opinion, this is probably the best Local H album. I'm a little torn between this one and As Good as Dead, but I think I'm gonna have to go with this one. This cd is probably the best produced and has the most mature sound out of all the albums. The songs are real catchy and they aren't serious which is great. So many bands get too deep, but not Local H. As others have mentioned, it's more of a party album, or just one to put in when your in a good mood.
The first time I listened to this, I didn't like the way a few of the songs started so I would pass through them. But after letting it play the songs actually get very good. One of them that I thought I hated wound up being one of my favorite songs after listening to it the whole way through. The very first song gets a little bit repetative towards the middle so I usually only listen to the first half of it. 'What can I tell you' is probably my favorite song on here although I have a lot of favorites.
I would recommend this cd to anyone who likes rock music, that is 'real' rock. Not commercial rock. Out of all the Local H's cd's, I would probably recommend this one first. Either this or As Good as Dead.
Concept rock at its best.......2004-11-08
We've all heard the 'it sucks being a rockstar' album. Hell, even Pearl Jam did it, and they're the world's greatest band ever. This album is so ambivalent on the concept, all you can tell is that the band is fascinated by the rock and roll life (obviously brought on by the ubiquitous 'Bound for the Floor' off their previous album). It's got its ups (Hit the Skids) and its downs (Fine and Good), but in the end, the only conclusion to come to is, to hell with it, let's rock. And they do. Consistently and thoroughly. While As Good As Dead might be more lasting because of the emotional element, PUTC is more powerful as a work of art- 47 minutes of literally nonstop rock, a blistering masterpiece that, somehow, did not translate into widespread national acclaim. Their hour-long set at Q101's Jamboree '99 remains one of the best sets I've ever seen in person, and the two H shows I've been to this year are not far behind. This record provided many of their staples, as well as their most complex and challenging work to date.
More from the excellent Local H.......2004-10-19
For the record, I'd just like to say that, to me, "As Good As Dead" is the better album. With that in mind, "Pack Up the Cats" has better songs, for the most part. The problem is, some of the songs on here aren't quite as strong, making me reach for the "skip" button, but it's rare enough, and when the songs get good, they get GREAT, so the disc gets the full five stars. Over the years, Local H is one of the few bands from the 90's alternative rock scene to A)survive and B)still be really really good. Here's a quick assessment of "Pack Up the Cats":
The Bad: Most of the "filler" songs, like "500,000 Scovilles," and "Lead Pipe Cinch." Also, "She Hates My Job" is a bit too straight forward for this immensely talented band.
The Good: Everything else, except...
The Great: "All-Right (Oh, Yeah)," "'Cha!' Said the Kitty," "Fine and Good," "Cool Magnet," and "All the Kids are Right."
If you bought "As Good As Dead" all those years ago, but forgot about Local H, now's as good a time as any to follow it up right...with "Pack Up the Cats."
