4 out of 5 stars Consistent.......2002-02-02

I considered this album overall enjoyable, just like I enjoyed most albums by Culture. On the other hand, I doubt whether this is the best album by Culture, but it does not stay really behind on their other albums. Many songs have that lively style with uplifting chanting which I can appreciate, but are somewhat - how can I put it - simpler, less elaborated, than on other albums. The chanting style, and Joseph Hill's sort of free style singing and talking adds that extra quality. The music is the lively, rootsy reggae style, also found on other Culture albums, but some songs ('War in Sierra Leone', 'Cape coast to Ja') have a somewhat distinct drum-based music, which doesn't sound bad.
A weak point is that some parts of the album are, here and there, somewhat monotonous.

The songs of my Dis tape is on repeat in my head right now. Offcourse it is good music. JOSEPH!

5 out of 5 stars This is a must-buy!.......2004-04-07

Working Week is a timeless. They have mastered melody, rhythm and arrangement like no other jazz ensemble that I have ever heard. Each track is unique and worthy of being it's own single. They nudge one's emotions through dynamic range and catchy solos like I have never heard before.

I first heard Working week in 1987 on the soundtrack to the movie 'Absolute Beginners' (featuring an obscure track - Rodrigo Bay). On the merit of that steller song, I bought Payday in a used CD bin in 1989. Since then I have search far and wide to get their other releases, including: Black and Gold, Fire on the Mountain and two others. I have yet to find a better band in ANY genre of music. This is a must-buy!

5 out of 5 stars Jazz for Non Jazz Enthusiasts..........2002-06-04

Working Week combines the strong elements of contemporary jazz with Latin influences. They also add a touch of gospel for good measure. The only missing track that would have been the crowning jewel for this collection was Rodrigo Bay. This track can only be found on the 1986 motion picture soundtrack Absolute Beginners (movie, video-like musical about British or U.K. teens in the early 60's with musical and screen appearances by David Bowie and Sade). Rodrigo Bay would have shown just how seamlessly and vibrantly Working Week could mix Latin, jazz, and cha-cha rhythms for a tropical partying frenzy. Still, this collection offers the 10 minute Latin and jazz musical opus of Venceremos which includes vocal and musician contributions by Tracey Thorn (Everything But the Girl) and Stuart Matthewman (Sade). This compilation is guaranteed to stay fresh in anyone's eclectic music collection as well as in their multiple disc changer;it's just that good if not great !

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful and Accomplished Band.......2002-03-26

Britain's Working Week emerged in the mid 1980's playing catchy soulful pop-jazz with a Latin groove. The first song I heard by them was "I Thought I'd Never See You Again" and it was brilliant. The song is pure Summer intoxication...Glistening melodies and shimmering strings with a wondeful hot latin trumpet solo. 15 years later, not a summer goes by when I don't put it on the turntable several times. It is still an incredible an sophisticated song well worth the price of the cd alone. In my opinion the standout of the collection and one of my favourite songs period. This compilation draws on their first three albums or so with singer Juliet Roberts. I am aware of at least one album ("Fire from the Mountain")released after Juliet left the band. It was a wonderful album, but isn't represented here. Finding anything by this band in the states is a major chore and I am happy to find "Payday" on offer. If you have a taste for sophisticated pop with jazz subtlety and latin soul, give Working Week a try.

5 out of 5 stars Working week...delicious!.......2002-01-25

A must-hear british jazz band with a rich textured sound ranging from romantic ballads like "Sweet Nothing" and "Come to Me" to danceable latin tracks like "Work Work Work". If you like the idea of jazz but can't bear to jump in for fear of seemingly random trumpets and discordant rhythms THIS IS THE BAND FOR YOU!!! Tuneful, tasteful, brilliant!

3 out of 5 stars Nice to own this one in case there is no other available.......2000-05-23

The record company should re-release the first two albums instead of holding on to this sampler which does exclude some real beauties. Still, WW even today is a strange brew and it is hard to find a band like them

4 out of 5 stars Flip & Z-Ro come correct for Texas.......2005-12-27

Lil Flip who blew up over the past few years, went and got a lesser known but solid and experienced fellow H-Town rapper Z-Ro and put out a solid 13 song album for the south. Althought the album title may be a little to much (that title is Scarface, or UGK"s) they do bring a solid album. The 2 different styles and flows blend well together as another reviewer said. Of the 13 songs, each rapper is on 11 and has 2 solo's although you get a little bit more of Flip. 4 songs are ok, 2 are almost classics, the rest are good. Other guests are on 6 songs. Production is nice as well. Price does 7 songs, Flip & Z-Ro each do 2 songs, Oomp Camp & Mike Dean each do 1 song. A nice album for their fans or fans of Texas rap to have.

5 out of 5 stars Clutch CD.......2005-08-20

I hadn't been a big fan of z-ro until i heard this cd, he definately comes out hard. However I'll have to disagree with the previous suggestion that flip was unimpressive, or average on this cd. He came out with his laid back southern syrup sippin rap style and did it well. The contrast between these rappers styles really adds to the value of the cd. If you like southern rap I definately suggest grabbin this disc.

Best songs, f dat nigga and never take me alive.

5 out of 5 stars Flip, Z-Ro back in this bitch.......2005-07-12

"Kings of the South" needs to be distributed world wide, They should have hyped the ablum more because it is the best underground rap album of the year. Check out the Z-Ro song "From the South" on "Let the Truth Be Told" feat. Flip. Two of the best rappers out right now. Flip's freestyles are tight. I'm out

5 out of 5 stars HOT HOT HOT.......2005-06-02

Beef is over, however this cd shows who the kings of the south really are. The screwed up click Z-RO and the clover G"s put it down, no joke. Best release yet this year.

4 out of 5 stars Houston's Finest .......2005-04-19

Riding the recent phenominal success of Texas brand rap, Z-Ro and Lil Flip release their collaborative mixtape which sounds more like an EP for each of their upcoming releases. From the very beginning strong production is made evident with hard mid to up-tempo beats and hard laid back bass. "Burbans and Lacs arguably the standout track on the CD takes a syrupy approach to Master P's 1997 street hit of the same title over a laid back beat provided by Price. Z-Ro handles his own production on the aggresive "Uncut" where he also handles all the lyrics himself. Throughout the CD Lil Flip sounds uncomfortable keeping up with Price's Georgia influenced soundscape. Whereas Flip continuously spits less than impressive punch lines Z-Ro sticks to the script of the streets delivering some of his best lyrical work to date. "Grown Man", "Art of War", and "What Up Now" are all delightfully satisfying tracks destined to be in heavy street rotation by the summer. Z-Ro and Yukmouth provide highlight reel delivery on the Oomp Camp produced "Get It Crunk", which utilizes a sample of Southern heavyweight 8Ball's voice as the hook. The last track is a pledge of allegiance to the machine which propelled many of Texas' current stars to national recognition; "Screwed Up Click" ressurects the careers of lost and forgotten Botany Boys C-Note and Will-Lean over an aggresive declarative seat pumping beat. Overall this CD is undoubtedly a must have for any screw head. Z-Ro shines throughout a majoriy of the collection creating a deeper buzz for the release of his upcoming "Let The Truth Be Told". flip on the other hand shows glimpses of returing to his street side, but failed attempts to lyrically silence T.I. make many of his deliveries on the CD seem all too average.

5 out of 5 stars A must - have CD!.......1999-11-25

I am the assistant general manager of a college radio station where Wendie Colter recently was kind enough to do a free show and on-air interview. When I first heard the album "Payday" it absolutely blew me away. It seems so often today that albums consist of one or two singles and the rest of it is there mostly to fill space. Wendie's song writing abilities are tremendous and she is amazing live. Every song on Payday had me singing along, something that's not very easy to do to me considering my singing abilities (similar to Axl Rose with something stuck in his throat). After the show was confirmed by her manager we could not stop giving "7th Wave" and "Idling" spins on the air, the album is just so good. Whether you know the name Wendie colter or not, Payday is an album that you cannot afford to pass up. People... trust someone kind of connected to the industry, please! acquire Wendie Colter's debut album "Payday." If you like Melissa Etheridge, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, or anyone who has the ability to put together great melodies with provoking lyrics then Wendie Colter is for you.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this record!!!.......1999-10-31

Wendie Colter is better than Jewel. I even like her better than Aimee Mann -- and THAT's not faint praise. She's a better singer than AM, just as good a songwriter and the band on this CD is excellent and they ROCK. I think the same guy plays piano and guitar and he's amazing on both, even the drums really stand out. Her voice gives me chills on the slow songs and even when she's rockin' out. Some of the songs bring me close to tears but they're not too downer sad, they're just so wise it makes you feel better. "Lean Into The Light" manages to be completely unsentimental about life and joyfully positive as well -- I'm getting a little verklempt... Beautiful beautiful record. How can I get more? (PS Matt from Seattle meant he despised radio right? "Idling" is one of the songs that hits every dramatic moment possible -- and it rocks!)

5 out of 5 stars If you appreciate great songwriting, this is the ticket!.......1999-10-27

Wendie Colter has proven herself a brilliant songwriter already with her first CD release (with Box The Walls), but this record really puts her into the league with all my favorites, including Neil Finn and Jane Siberry. Plus, what an amazing voice she has, and what excellent lyrics!

5 out of 5 stars Make way for some pop salvation.......1999-10-22

Colter's writing and singing on this disc prove she's better than the majority of female pop troubadors out there. Listening to "Idling" was enough to convince me not only to make the purchase, but to question why I haven't heard the track all over the radio, and often enough to make me despise it in the final analysis. And the piano playing! Heavenly disc.

    Product Description

1, 2, 3, 4… Infused with an almost early vintage rock sound, Honeywagen adds a certain nostalgic rock style to their power pop album “Payday”. From their catchy hooks to ear-luring guitar riffs, Honeywagen adds upbeat rock melodies to their songs with enough appeal to keep you hooked throughout the album. The first track, “Blown Away”, is an upbeat rock melody that has enough pull to draw you in and make you wonder what the next song will bring. Songs like “Forgetting You”, “Hang Around”, “Forever”, and “In The City”, have a distinct sound, similar to something you’d find on a Big Star album. Adding the sounds of a slide guitar, “Down The River” has a bluesy, almost country, sound to it -- again, almost something you’d hear performed on Austin City Limits. The ninth track, “So Sad”, maintains a slower pace than some of the songs found on the album. This song has a pretty catchy tune, and if you listen to it several times, you're likely to find yourself singing along. The last track, “Bleeding”, completes the album with yet another catchy upbeat rock melody. From vocals to playing style, “Payday” has enough magnetism to keep you listening to the whole album. This album has enough variety to keep you satisfied, without falling into an annoying repetitive song cycle where all the melodies sound alike. It’s all about preference but I’m sure “Payday” would hit well with most all power pop fans.
