    Album Description

Roscoe Mitchell, Thomas Buckner, and Gerald Oshita founded the trio SPACE in 1979 as a vehicle for the exploration of new concepts in composition and improvisation. This 2 CD set is a reissue of the 2 records by the trio originally released on 1750 Arch Records. New Music for Woodwinds and Voice presents compositions by Mitchell and Oshita which employ varying degrees of improvisation. An Interesting Breakfast Conversation is devoted entirely to group improvisation.

Fans of The Beatles, Beach Boys and John Wesley Harding should buy this disc!

5 out of 5 stars Smart, funny folk/rock from Costello to Beatles to Stones!!.......1999-06-10

Adam Leland is a veteran of the Stonesouls, an Athens band best known for participating in the locally-produced Replacements tribute album. Singing with a pleasant nasality more evocative of Dylan than Westerberg, Leland makes a terrific solo debut with The End of Public Space, a disc packed with funny, insightful tunes such as "One Hit Wonder" (with an amusing roll call of one-hit bands) and "Beatles or Beach Boys" (about a clueless girl who "spells Byrds with an i and Monkees with a y"). "(You're a) Sad Thing" is a wicked blast of Standells-like garage rawk and "You're Going Away" may make you check the credits to be sure it's not some obscure R.E.M song.

More typical is "Tonight's Lows," which creates, with nothing more than bongos and acoustic guitar, an effect more like a brilliant demo than an actual finished track. The CD does include a pair of tunes recorded with a full band, though. In fact, the pretty "So Much Time" and the sweetly Kevn Kinney-ish "Reasons Why" suggest Leland is well on his way toward creating his onw wonderous one hit. Or two, or three...
