...agile rhythm section, an acid guitar, and a Hammond organ that alternates between sounds full of sharpness and liquid atmospheres...

Product Description
"Beat. It" is raw 60's drenched fuel to feed a world dominated by an otherwise anemic and bland soundscape. How Hammond organ funk is meant to be heard.

"Beat. It" is also the sound for the 2004 motion picture "Wilson Chance" (Bunzendahl Brothers Productions), which provided 5 songs to sit side-by-side with a fresh score by 007 guitar legend Vic Flick. And if that wasn't enough, the meeting of the Link Quartet, Hammondbeat, and Wilson Chance has resulted in a special soundtrack album ("The Sound of Danger", March 2, 2004) featuring over 70 minutes of new music, also available at Amazon!

Next up...listen for the next Link Quartet album "Italian Playboys International" (May 2004).

5 out of 5 stars Jackpot.......2007-05-08

This, along with The Specials (The Specials) is one of the two of the defining masterpieces of the 2nd Wave of ska. However, unlike the Specials, they give credit where credit is due -- crediting Prince Buster with "Rough Rider," whereas the Specials did *not* credit Toots & the Maytals with "Monkey Man," basically ripped off "Al Capone" by Prince Buster, threw some nonsense lyrics together, and voila "Gangsters". They kept the "Don't Call me Scarface," and in lieu of "Al Capone's Guns don't argue" at the beginning, "Bernie Rhodes (their manager) knows don't argue"...
Ok, enough of that. Both are masterpieces in their own right, but "I Just Can't Stop It" takes the cake, IMHO. And I've been listening to ska for quite a few decades now...and just came from seeing the Beat (as they're known in England; unfortunately an American band named the Beat had them precursor their name with thier country of origin...) for the 2nd time in 6 months. They played over 2.5 hours straight through, and are at the top of the list of energetic bands I've ever seen. And live, they are much different than they are on record -- both are brilliant, in their own special way. My favorite song off the CD, "Twist & Crawl," which is more new wave/mod meets ska, became an insane dub-fueled monster live.
If you are a fan of music, especially one of the 3rd wave of ska (e.g. Sublime, No Doubt, to name the most famous...and who blended punk rock with ska) and want to know some of the origins of the music, even though Sublime covers Toot's "54-46 Was My Number" and never covers any of the 2nd generation (even looking through my prodigious Sublime bootleg collection), this album is for you. And for those wondering what ska is, this is for you...it is a masterpiece. It's better than any ska anthology you'll find IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars Landmark Ska.......2007-02-23

The Beat took up their task with relish and purpose, producing one of the most definitive ska albums of the 80's. Today, I Just Can't Stop It remains a timeless work a quarter century later...

Quibbles about the British edition aside (only the early American version of the cd has Tears of a Clown and Ranking Full Stop), this record is as socially conscious as it is fun. Ranking and Wakeling were not overly opinionated lads, but they made their points eloquently and with arresting honesty. It is quite often the case, however, that you find yourself singing along to a beautiful harmony, only realizing later on what the lyrics actually say. I only noticed the political overtones of 'Stand Down Margaret' after grooving to it for some two or three years. :)

It's a shame that a group of this caliber splintered after only three albums, but I suppose we should count ourselves lucky to have heard them at all.

5 out of 5 stars Non Stop Fun!.......2006-06-18

First released in 1980, The English Beat's (known in the UK simply as The Beat they added the name English to their moniker to avoid confusion with a California based also band called The Beat) "I Just Can't Stop" it is not only possibly the single greatest album of the later 70's/early 80's ska revival, it is one of the greatest album of the late 70's/early 80's punk/new wave scene.

Already full of nonstop, infectious boppin' tunes the band's US label added two songs to the original album -- "Rankin' Full Stop," and a cover of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "Tears of a Clown" that had been stand alone singles in the UK. By omitting those songs from this CD reissue the album has been restored to its original running order and, as a previous reviewer noted, becomes the album the way the band intended for it to be heard.

But all of that is really pretty moot because this is still a great, great record with songs like "Best Friend," "Mirror in the Bathroom, "Hands Off She's Mine," and "Wine and Grind/Stand Down Margaret" (ah, the days of the anti-Thatcher/Reagan anthems) that compel you to hit the repeat button on your CD remote over and over.

Ignore the reviewers who don't know the history of this album and get this -- the complete and original version of one of the all time great albums.

5 out of 5 stars This IS the orginal complete album.......2006-05-25

As has already been noted by one other reviewer, the original release of "I Just Can't Stop It" did not include "Tears of a Clown" or "Ranking Full Stop". These were added to the original U.S. release of the record due to the fact that these UK singles were otherwise unavailable in the U.S. Seeing as how they are compiled on multiple North American releases and were never supposed to be on the record, releasing the original UK version of the album on CD is perfectly justified.

5 out of 5 stars Ska done right - this album is so addictive!!!.......2006-01-22

I'll be honest here - I used to HATE ska. I would go to my local concert hall to see some local musicians and there would ALWAYS be horrible ska bands playing (which is why I hated ska). I had just about given up on the genre when, to my surprise, I hear a sample of The English Beat's "Mirror In The Bathroom" on Coldcut's "Journeys By DJ: 70 Minutes of Madness" (also an excellent album) and was immediately intrigued. Lo' and behold, after I got this album, it was amazing! I never knew ska could be so fun and interesting! Every song here is great and all of them are pretty memorable - everything about them is fantastic. The vocals are very well done here as Dave Wakeling has a very appealing voice. The lyrics are also pretty interesting to listen to as well as catchy - "Mirror In The Bathroom" is but one of many songs that'll get stuck in your head. Musically it sounds like most other ska bands but with a little new wave and college rock thrown in. It's also very well-produced for an album that came out in 1980. Overall this is an album that most people will LOVE, not jsut ska fans. Absolutely recommended!

a good sound from the southside johnny band, can't wait to see them @ the end of the week!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Value for the money.......2006-08-07

If you're searching for Southside Johnny albums, you're going to definitely want the first 3, which are not really easily found these days in the US. The best-of is good, but you really owe it to yourself to hear the first 3 records, complete. Since the 3-fer box is out of print, you should pick this cd up (it's a UK import) and then go score a copy of Hearts of Stone (total s/b around $30 all-in) and you'll add three essential Jersey albums to your collection. They're must-hears for fans of Bruce, a testimony to Miami Steve's genius, songwriting & production chops and good taste, and SSJ and the Jukes ain't too shabby live either (if you get a chance to see them).....

5 out of 5 stars A Jukes two-fer that deserves space on your CD rack!.......2005-04-09

Let's just say Bruce Springsteen was the other guy who helped contribute to the "Asbury sound". It always amazes me how many Springsteen fans know so little about Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. That is truly a shame. These first two albums reissued on a single CD is a fine place to start for anybody yearning for some great rock & roll with one of the finest singers & a crack horn section to boot. Oh, the guest appearances are great too, Lee Dorsey & Ronnie Spector duet with Johnny on a couple of numbers. Springsteen & Van Zandt contribute heavily to the writing & arranging of these 1st two albums. Steven Van Zandt was then still a member of The Asbury Jukes before becoming a full-time E Streeter behind Bruce. The fact that Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes have not yet been considered for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is an injustice. For more info on Jukes CDs not available here-go to southside johnny.com. Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes are America's best kept secret.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2004-09-10

Superb songwriting, soulful singing, and the band ROCKS! These are the first two albums of that great Jukes Triumvirate. I bought "This Time It's For Real" at the time of its release, and I still listen to it at least once a week. This music is like fine wine - it only gets better with age. If these don't move you to your soul, nothing will. . .

5 out of 5 stars Music speaks for itself.......2004-05-14

If you are reading this, then you know the music itself is 5 stars. I beleive the liner notes are rather extensive than the originals, and possibly re-mastered. But c'mon, Amazon, the Asbury DUKES? It's the Asbury Jukes...this ain't Hazzard County.

Album Description

Based on action-packed, critically-acclaimed earlier volumes in this series, it's official that there was one seriously healthy recording scene stretching across the garage band nation circa '66. Sundazed is here to once again honor the most savage electrical surges from those shaggy heroes and less longhaired neighborhood idols, alike; from Detroit pre-punk legends the Unrelated Segments and fuzz fracas of the Liberty Bell to no-hit wonders the Lykes of Us and the Wild Things.

I recently acquired all 7 of these Garage Beat '66s. The sound quality is right up there with the 1998 Nuggets re-release, in other words, as good as it gets. Upon first listen, their allure may prove elusive. However, just like with nuggets, the second listen and every subsequent listen rewards the listener, exponentially. These gems grow on you like a Green Fuzz. You'll be walking around hearing voices, green and purple. I'm so much more comfortable with the snotty sixties than that peace and love bunk. Album Description

Remastered. If any one album deserves credit for ushering in the Western swing revival, it's this previously buried treasure from 1970. Haggard taught himself to play fiddle before recording this album and augmented his band with members of Wills's pioneering Texas Playboys, including guitarist Eldon Shamblin and fiddler Johnny Gimble. Merle would become a more fluid fiddler in the future, and the Strangers would swing more cohesively, but that doesn't take away from the chemistry or adventurousness in this, his first effort in the genre. BGO. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars A Tribute to a Tribute Album.......2007-02-07

Not to worry this is a CD that takes two of Merle Haggard's Capital Record albums from the 1970's and puts them on one CD. In a way its amazing that Record buyers from the 60's and 70's bought albums with 30 minutes of music, but today we can reap the benefits of two albums plus some well worth bonus tracks on one CD. As to the Music its a pure delight. Merle Haggard plays tribute to his musical idol Bob Wills on the 1st half of this CD. Its great and many of the original Texas Playboys play too. This has been out of circulation for awhile. The other half of the CD is pure Haggard at his best.

5 out of 5 stars The Isley Two-On-Ones Continue (Thank God).......2007-05-24

BGO RECORDS should be commended for reissuing those classic 70s and 80s Isley Brothers albums as two-on-one cds. The liner notes are great and the remastered sound is excellent. I'm looking forward to the next Isley two-on-one (1981's INSIDE YOU paired with 1982's THE REAL DEAL).

LIVE IT UP (1974) and THE HEAT IS ON (1975) are the Isleys at the peak of their 70s creative and commercial power. By now the Isleys have settled into a formula of funky clavinet riffs, stinging guitar solos, and smooth "sweet lady" ballads. But this formula still sounds fresh over thirty years later. Four classic top ten r&b hits ("Live It Up", "Midnight Sky", "Fight The Power" and "For The Love Of You") are here along with such quiet storm classics as "Hello It's Me" and "Make Me Say It Again Girl".

LIVE IT UP became the Isleys' first of 10 #1 r&b albums, while THE HEAT IS ON surprisingly went to #1 on the r&b AND pop charts. Hey BGO, how about pairing 1977's GO FOR YOUR GUNS with 1980's GO ALL THE WAY? Or 3+3 with HARVEST FOR THE WORLD? (Just a thought)

5 out of 5 stars Bassey at her very best!.......2007-01-30

This excellent 2CD release from BGO features two Shirley Bassey albums originally released in 1974 and 1976. Both released for the first time on CD!. The first "Nobody Does It Like Me" was recorded in the USA following the popularity of Shirley's previous album and single "Never Never Never". This album was designed to place Shirley in the lucrative US adult contemporary market and results in a different sound to her UK recordings around the same period. Shirley'e voice is at its very best, and the overall production is pulled back somewhat compared with her previous UA albums. Now 30 years later, this album sounds better than ever, and listeners can't help but wonder why it wasn't a bigger success. Standout tracks include "Davy" a duet with the songs composer; Bernard Ighner and Paul Anka's "I'm Not Anyone". The album closes with Shirley's beautiful version of Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life". Next is the album "Love, Life and Feelings" from 1976 which placed Shirley firmly back in the UK charts. This album peaked at number 13 and enjoyed a 5 week run in the charts. There is not a single track on this album that does not deserve 5 stars, but for the record you will find many songs associated with Dame Shirley that (strangely) don't appear on many compilations including, "What I Did For Love", "Born To Lose", "Natali" and "If I Never Sing Another Song". Both albums have been expertly re-mastered by the experts at BGO and have never sounded better!

5 out of 5 stars oh boo-hoo, bad press.......2006-11-18

This is music of 'ndrangheta, in Calabria, not the mafia. Stereotype? Take a walk through some of the towns in Calabria. You'll see music is unnecessary to promote this 'stereotype'.

How about the Communist/Jewish mafia of den Haag with its tentacles in Rome and everywhere else?

5 out of 5 stars Songs of the Bad Life: Part 2.......2006-01-11

This CD is Vol. two of: La Musica della Mafia: Il Canto di Malavita, any collector of Mafia related items will find this a welcome addition to their collection. This paticular CD I believe stands on it's own, along side the first volume and is as good as that volume. As noted in my review of the previous CD, this music is best enjoyed with a fine wine, a traditional dinner, and candlelight. It is beautiful music and sets a wonderful mood.

4 out of 5 stars Earthy and Raw.......2004-04-07

When I first played this CD through, I did not like it near as much as Vol 1 Il Canto di Malavita. The song selection seemed weaker and the singers less polished than on the first compilation. So often does a follow-up to a surprise hit fail to live up to the listener's expectations, that I nearly resigned myself to putting this on the shelf and letting it collect dust.
Instead, I took a different tack and decided to listen with new ears as though I'd never heard the first volume. Once I'd done that, I found a lot about Omerta, Onuri e Sangu to enjoy.
To begin with, the music here is earthy and raw. It reminds me a lot of the folk music of many lands. I can hear strains of Greek, Spanish, Arab, and even Argentine musical influences as it plays through. My favorites are Ninna Nanna Malandrineddu, a mother's song urging her son to vengeance; Tira La Pinna, the mournful gypsy-influenced song of a condemned man; A Casanza, a rollicking guitar-driven tarantella that relates the story of a prison power struggle; La Me Galera, the story of a wrongfully imprisoned man that has an Argentine feel to the music; and Si Gira e Si Revolta, the melancholy story of a man rotting in his cell and yearning for freedom.
About the only negative here is that there are too many short pieces and "parlati" which clutter up the CD and give one the impression it is longer than it is.
If you liked Il Canto di Malavita, then come to this with an open mind and give it a chance, too. If you have heard neither "Il Canto..." nor this CD, then buy them both and try to listen without comparing them. You will be glad you did.

3 out of 5 stars Very good music...but very bad image and stereotype!.......2004-01-08

Beeing a sicilian and an ethnomusicologist I can say that the music recorded on this cd is of a QUALITATIVE LEVEL and REPERTORY which ARE EXCEPTIONAL,I decisevly though don't like the terrible stereotype of the image of Sicily only connected with the criminal world, there is a lot of more interesting and beautifull things to focus on in this land than the mafia.
For example what about the mafia in China,Japan,Russia,Albania,or even...the USA!
I really don't agree with the TITLE of this cd,the connection of these wonderfull sounds with such a terrible criminal stereotype is highly harming,in fact, the sicilian culture as well...
Lisen to the music...and please forget that Sicily is ONLY mafia,it'not true...and it's not any badder than many other"civilised"places in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Two Albums That Define The Country Rock Genre!!!!.........and it's best band....THE "OZARK MOUNTAIN DAREDEVILS".......2005-07-20

This collection of the Daredevils first 2 albums is truely a masterpiece. Very few bands can be classified in this great genre of music known only as "Country Rock"; and without a doubt these two albums are essential to any country rocker. If you enjoy the Burrito Brothers or any other country rock band you'll love the Daredevils. The 2-disc collection comes in a paper sheath with the shown cover and has a detailed booklet with pictures of the 6 main Daredevils and what they play. Also, the booklet contains a brief description of the Country Rock genre and how it all started and brought about the greatest Country Rock band ever: the "Ozark Mountain Daredevils".

Stand Out Tracks: "E.E. Lawson", "Black Sky", "You Made It Right", and "Lowlands".

Most Popular Track: "Jackie Blue", "If You Wanna Get To Heaven", "Spaceship Orion".

Get this collection if your just getting into the band; it's their start and contains their best work.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Like A Great Crosby, Stills And Nash Album.......2001-10-17

Most of what I have read from critics indicates that the debut album, "Brinsley Schwarz", is this band's weakest album, while praising the second album, "Despite It All", as being a classic of the pub-rock genre. (Both are included on this generous "twofer".) But I disagree entirely with the critical consensus. My favorite Brinsley Schwarz album is the debut. Stylistically it is quite different from their subsequent albums. It lopes along at a languid pace, with lovely harmonies that sound remarkably close to those of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Some of the songs stretch out into lengthy jam sessions, while rarely straying from the relaxed tempos. It sounds a lot like the Grateful Dead, circa "American Beauty"/"Workingman's Dead". The first four songs - Hymn To Me, Shining Brightly, Rock And Roll Woman, and Lady Constant - are terrific. By the second album, "Despite It All", their sound had changed. The songs are shorter, the tempos are faster, the country music influence is more overt. This really is the blueprint for all subsequent Brinsley Schwarz albums. "Country Girl" is generally considered the standout track, although it's a bit too "Hee Haw" for my tastes. Still, all Brinsley Schwarz albums are good, and to get the great debut and the good second album on one CD is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Albums, One Great CD.......2001-02-23

Brinsley Schwartz are best known as the founders of the pub movement, but these albums come from their early country rock period, and surprisingly, they are both excellent. Fans of classic rock artists like The Band, The Dead and The Byrds will find much to admire here, as will fans of modern alt country acts like Wilco and Son Volt. DESPITE IT ALL is better than the eponymous album, because the psychedelic influence is less, but it's a fairly small difference. Tracks of note include `Slow One', `Hymn To Me' `Funk Angel' and especially `Country Girl'. These old albums are hard to find, even in good second hand record shops, so I suggest if you want em, buy em here.

5 out of 5 stars How Jazz-Rock was Born. British anyways........2005-07-21

Nucleus's first two albums are some nice pieces of history in the field of jazz-rock. Elastic Rock is kind sounds like Nucleus rushed thought the pieces, but the album does has good rifts and solos mostly by Jenkins and Carr. Highlights on this album here are Twisted Track,an original by Speeding and Peter Brown, that features some nice country blues guitar by Speeding,Torrid Zone and Persephones Blues. Songs like Stonescape,Striantion and Speaking of Myself... are indulgent ideas. Next is a more polished,funk-filled We'll Talk About it Later. Song For a Bearded Lady is a classic and sounds a little better then Hazard Profile from Soft Machine inwhich had Jenkins and Marshall in it, but the song is a gritty funk number with some heavy distored wah-wah piano and slick guitar work. Sun Child follows the theme but with some of the most complex rhythm by Clyde and Mrshall. The gloomy Lullaby For a Lomesome Child is next with a basic rift and head but no solo. The Title Track is a disorganized piece with Speeding holding it together. The long Oasis is an odd piece, you can really get it in your head. Ballad of Joe Pimp is fun to listen to. The unknown singer and simple-minded lyrics get tedious kind of. Easter 1916 is a reprise off of Battle of Boogaloo with some gruff vocal lines making you think of Willam Shatner, but the end of the song is the best with Brian Smith and John Marshall going free-form on us, kind of like Jupiter by Coltrane. A highly recommended double set to own. Recommendation: Six by Soft Machine.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music from a Forgotten Era.......2004-09-30

This CD reminds me that the In a Silent Way did not spring full blown from the forehead of Miles Davis. The first disc is an excellent example of In a Silent Way style modal jazz. It's no wonder from listening to this that the addition of 2 Englishmen made the Miles stuff leap so far ahead. The second disc is even better in my estimation. Some amazing guitar work from the underappreciated Chris Spedding. Great themes from Karl Jenkins and terrific playing from the whole ensemble. A worthwhile purchase for anyone who enjoys the music that Miles made in this era. The fact that the band is led by trumpeter Ian Carr only makes the comparisons more obvious. There's only one Miles, but this stuff holds its weight on its own merits.

5 out of 5 stars What a sound!.......2004-08-21

Ian Carr & Nucleus is a genuine pioneer of British Jazz-Rock Fusion blending free-jazz with psychedelic improvisational rock elements. There is true spirit in their works, far from nowadays pathetic fusion music. Highly-recommended!!!

p.s.: You can see free MP3 file above on this page. Just stop trying to judge IC & Nucleus by it because it is the song of the completely different group with the same name. Amazon should correct this.

4 out of 5 stars British underground jazz-rock.......2002-05-27

I'm quiet surprised to be the first to review this fantastic album. Led by trompetist Ian Carr, and supported by Karl Jenkins and John Marshall (before joining Soft Machine) this band just realized this two albums in 1971. I just can highly recommend this one to anyone who likes Soft Machine and those british jazz-rock bands.
