As innovative and influential in their own way as their Southern rock precursors the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd's career was just as star-crossed, perhaps more. Fate dealt them terrible blows in the form of the plane crash that killed singer Ronnie Van Zandt and guitarist Steve and his sister, singer Cassie Gaines; there were subsequent tragedies as well. This set features the biggest hits of the band's original incarnation, such as "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," "What's Your Name," and "Saturday Night Special," but also includes the potent album tracks "Gimme Three Steps," "You Got That Right," and "That Smell." Skynyrd is overrepresented by greatest-hits sets and live albums, though, and this collection is easily bested by the much deeper collections The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd and All Time Greatest Hits. No matter how you package it, though, this is still powerful music. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
Some of the Sounds of the South..........2007-03-24
Lynyrd Skynyrd burst onto the rock scene in the early 1970s. With incredible early hits like "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama," the band seemed destined for incredibly lofty heights. With the sudden and tragic death of some band members just a few years later the group was crushed; but their music lives on and countless people enjoy Lynyrd Skynyrd to this day.
The CD starts with "Sweet Home Alabama." This number has an infectiously catchy melody and the guitars rock furiously on this number. "Sweet Home Alabama" was also the group's answer to Neil Young's song entitled "Southern Man." "Sweet Home Alabama" remains a fine piece of music and it starts this CD off strong.
"What's Your Name" follows as the second track on this CD; again the melody draws you in as they play and sing about meeting pretty women with whom they can spend intimate time together. Excellent!
"Gimme Three Steps" tells the classic tale of a man caught flirting with another man's woman; this doesn't exactly sit well with the woman's boyfriend. The intro rocks hard and awesome with the intense three guitar jam; and in fact all through "Gimme Three Steps" the guitars are excellent. One thing about Lynyrd Skynyrd: their guitars always carried the arrangement perfectly. Not a bad trademark for a rock band, eh?
"Double Trouble" features a chorus as backup for the group; and "You Got That Right" rocks hard! "You Got That Right" lets Lynyrd Skynyrd play their music and sing of guys who just want to have fun. "You Got That Right" has a great beat to it, too.
Obviously, the crowning jewel on this all too brief album is "Free Bird." The intro hinges on the guitars as always and serves as an immense announcement that a great song is about to begin. Somewhat philosophical about relationships and the desire to not be tied down to any one woman are highlighted in "Free Bird;" but the real treasure is the unparalleled guitar jamming that dominates most of this nine minute number after the lyrics end. This number may last nine minutes; but it's so darn good you'll feel like it was only nine seconds! GRIN "Free Bird" is an incredibly strong ending for this CD.
The liner notes give you a good essay about the history of the band written by Joseph F. Laredo. You get the song credits and a list of other Lynyrd Skynyrd albums out on CD.
Other reviewers write that this CD is not thorough enough and that it is too short. They are right. You may want to think of this as a budget CD for people who want to find out if they like Lynyrd Skynyrd music. This CD may also suffice for casual fans. True Lynyrd Skynyrd fans could never be satisfied without songs like Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man being included in the track set.
Therefore I recommend this for casual fans; and people who are brand new to Lynyrd Skynyrd and who want to see if they'll like their music will profit from this CD. True blue fans, however, should opt for more extensive compilations including the two CD set entitled The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd and another two CD set entitled Thyrty: The 30th Anniversary Collection.
Good Album but Missing Too Much.......2006-07-04
Though this is a very good disc, it leaves out too much to be considered the "Best of Lynyrd Skynyrd". Tracks missing include: Tuesday's Gone, Give Me Back My Bullet, The Ballad of Curtis Lowe, Call Me the Breeze, and Simple Man. If you want a true greatest hits go with another album.
Freebird.......2005-09-06
Maybe the best song on this compilation is Free Bird, it is exactly a song you can repeat over n over again. Then I think
another one is great is Sweet Home Alabama, get the whole collection, but the only song its missing is Call Me The Breeze.
If this CD had Simple Man, boy I'll rate the CD 1 star. If this
were Call Me The Breeze, here's how this will look.
1. Sweet Home Alabama
2. What's Your Name
3. Gimme Three Steps
4. Double Trouble
5. You Got That Right
6. Saturday Night Special
7. That Smell
8. Swamp Music
9. I Aint The One
10. Freebird
11. Call Me the Breeze
NOT WHAT YOU EXPECTED.......2005-08-18
IF YOU READ MY OTHER REVIEWS YOU WOULD NOT EXPECT ME TO REVIEW A LYNYRD SKYNYRD CD. FIRST OF ALL I'M OPEN MINDED TO OTHER MUSIC (EXCEPT POP,JAZZ,COUNTRY, AND RAP EXCEPT N.W.A. AND PUBLIC ENEMY.) SORRY TO GO OFF SUBJECT. BACK TO THE REVIEW I LIKE LYNYRD SKYNYRD AND THIS BEST OF IS AWSOME. I LIKE THE SONGS "SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL" "THAT SMELL" "GIMME THREE STEPS" AND "FREE BIRD." I LIKE THIS CD AND IF YOUR A METAL HEAD THATS IN TO CLASSIC ROCK YOU WILL LIKE THIS BEST OF.
Cool, but where is some of the non-hit classics?.......2005-06-05
Sure this is a great CD, but you dont get some of the classics that never really hit the charts, wheres Tuesdays gone? Hey, but get this album or the Essential Skynyrd album, either one is cool.

A good companion to "Gold & Platinum".......2005-11-29
Released in 1982, five years after the fatal plane crash that took the lives of Ronnie VanZant and Steve Gaines, 'Best of the Rest' is a compilation that includes the good songs that were not available on the semi-recently released "Gold & Platinum". This album also contains songs previously unreleased before this came out. "I've Been Your Fool" and "Gotta Go" were earlier Skynyrd recordings and at the time were not available on other albums. I think these songs should have been released on "Pronounced" but for one reason or another were not. "I'm a Country Boy" comes from the 1975 album "Nuthin' Fancy" and not really thought of as much of a hit. "Double Trouble" is the big hit from "Gimme Back My Bullets" and should have been included on "Gold & Platinum". To keep the tradition from "Gold & Platinum" of including live versions of big hits, this one has the live version of "Workin' For MCA", one of my all-time favorite songs. Next comes another hit that "Gold & Platinum" failed to include, "Call Me The Breeze", coming from their classic second album "Second Helping". "I Never Dreamed" from "Street Survivors" was originally not considered a hit but after this album was much more appreciated. Lastly, the only other CD inclusion of "T for Texas" besides "One More From The Road" and a very good southern blues song. Until recently, this album was very easy to find new, but for some reason, Amazon.com has stopped selling this item. I think that if MCA made this album out of print they should bring it back, or remaster it and make it sound even better. If you do find this album new, grab it because it's fading from the record store shelves. Overall, this is a very good album and you should buy it before it's gone forever
I can give you a big reason for getting this album..........2001-01-14
There is little reason for this CD to exist given all the compilations and live albums from Lynyrd Skynyrd released since "Best of the Rest" came out. The majority of the CD is studio tracks released on the regular LP's. "Workin for MCA" is an undistinguished live rendition. "T for Texas" is worth having but also can be found elsewhere. As far as I know, (but I'm no expert) "I've Been Your Fool" and "Gotta Go" are unique to this CD (except for the box set). The former is an good slide guitar number while the latter is an amazing southern rocker. "Gotta Go" is the ONE HUGE reason to buy this album if you are a fan of Skynyrd- it has all the elements a fan of this band loves: the Van Zant swagger, the triple axe attack, some serious licks. The recording of the song is a bit rough but I think it contributes to its appeal- "Gotta Go" is a hidden gem in the Skynyrd catalogue. This CD loses one star for repeating a bunch of material and 4 for "Gotta Go", "I've Been Your Fool", and "T for Texas."
Not their best..........2000-09-17
I love just about every Skynyrd song ever made...but half of the songs on this CD are just plain worthless. A better buy is Second Helping or the Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd.
A Skynyrd fan must have.......2000-02-26
This is a great Skynyrd album. The songs, "I've Been Your Fool," and, "Gotta Go," are two of the best. This album contains some excellent guitar work and some of my favorite vocal work by Ronnie Van Zant. The song, "I Never Dreamed," is one of Skynyrd's all-time always underrated tunes. The guitar work is seamless on this timeless classic.
Good Companion To Gold & Platinum.......1998-08-14
This CD has some really great material on it. If the only Skynyrd you have is Gold & Platinum, this CD would make a great companion. As a bonus, the CD includes "I've Been Your Fool" & "Gotta Go", which was Lynyrd Skynyrd's second single, which (like the previous single "Need All My Friends"/"Michelle) was released before the band was signed to MCA. Elsewhere on the CD is one of Skynyrd's most underrated songs, the beautiful "I Never Dreamed", the blues-rock jam fest "T For Texas", and 4 more classic tunes.

A solid greatest hits album..........2006-07-27
Because half of the band died several decades ago, Lynyrd Skynyrd has unfortunately unleashed a pile of greatest hits albums over the years. This happens to be one among many. I gave this particular album 4 stars because there is nothing to distinguish it from the rest.
This release includes the vast majority of Skynyrd's best songs, including the obvious ones "Freebird" and "Sweet Home Alabama," as well as some slightly lesser known hits like "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe." Though every Skynyrd fan could probably list a few favorites that didn't make the cut, I was only disappointed with the absence of "Simple Man." Other than that, this is a great collection.
Honestly, you're probably better off with another greatest hits album, as others are cheaper and more readily available. But if you stumble upon this one, it's solid.

The Best of Skynyrd.......2003-04-15
This compilation gives the most bang for the buck. I only wish "Simple Man" had made the set.
The Best Bang For The Buck.......2003-04-15
This collection is the best bang for the buck I have seen as far as Skynyrd compilation discs. The only negative I could give it is that the classic "Tuesday's Gone" is not in this set list.
