5 out of 5 stars One of U2's best Singles!.......2007-03-21

I've been a U2 fan for a long time and have collected several of the single releases of their music for some time. Window in the Skies, Pt. 2 is near the top of my list of the best. Window in the Skies is much different than most U2 songs as it is almost the perfect receipt of U2 at it's best, a dash of the Beattles, and a hint Sinatra making it very unique. The 2 live tracks Zoo Station and Kite are great inclusions to this single, with the live version of Kite being the jewel of the album. This live cut is very well done (much different than what was performed on the Elevation Tour) and includes a long Edge guitar solo...it is amazing! Overall, you will not be disappointed with this single.

4 out of 5 stars Taking you higher.......2007-03-13

Excellent single to own, especially if you are a die hard U2 fan. The live tracks Zoo Station and Kite from the Vertigo tour, really make the purchase of the disc extremely satisfying. I think Edge's guitar solo on this live cut of Kite may be one his best.

5 out of 5 stars With an 8 minute version of Kite..........2007-03-07

You can't go wrong. Windows in The Skies also a great song, but i'm guessing most people reading this review probably already has U218.

When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar ®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

It's an old movie with an old soundtrack, but I loved the movie, I love the music, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

Excellent in black and white and color. James Cagney also got a medal from a President. (President Reagan!} If you like entertainment...this is it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05

I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

Wonderful, wonderful stuff!

5 out of 5 stars What a find!!.......2003-06-15

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

5 out of 5 stars A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Entrance for Another U2 Era...........2007-05-10

What a wonderful little treat from those Irish boys. This single is taken from the album U218 Singles. "Windows in the Skies" being the second single from that album, while "The Saints are Coming" was the first. Now this CD only features two tracks, which is a slight disappointment. I can recall when CD singles had at least 3 to 4 songs, in the old days.

Windows in the Skies: This is a jovial and up beat song. It is a beautiful arrangement of melodies and vocals, a very catchy tune with wonderful lyrics. I had heard this song had a Beatles feel to it. I didn't know what that meant until I actually heard "Windows in the Skies"; once I did I can see why the comparison was made. This song is very different from anything on "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb." I really hope this is the direction U2 will be taking with their new material. However, I thought they would be going in a certain direction when they recorded "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" (featured on the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack) and they didn't. I also thought they would take a new approach with "Electrical Storm" (featured on the Best of U2: 1990-2000) yet again they didn't.

Tower of Song: This song is from the film "I am Your Man". The lead vocals are by Leonard Cohen. I have to be honest, the only song I ever knew by Cohen was "Coming Back to You", and I had only heard covers of it (for instance Martin L. Gore's version). So this is my first time really hearing his voice. I have to say the first time I heard "Tower of Song", I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. Cohen's voice is coarse and a bit abrasive. It appears that he is talking more than singing. However after a few listens, I really began to like it. The music is amazing; of course U2 is playing, the music is mellow and hypotonic. In the latter part of the song, Bono jumps in to sing a couple of lines. This is cool, but I almost think his lyrics and vocals could have been omitted and it wouldn't have affected the quality of the song. Mainly because Cohen does such a good job. I know that this is a reasonable charges for heresy, saying that Bono was needed. Don't worry, still much love for Bono.

Overall nice little package. Just a side note, it is always strange when a band records songs in between albums, it might be an indication of what is to come or it isn't. So I am not sure if these two songs are foreshadowing the future of U2 or just more musical experimenting. Either way I am sure my ears will be pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Great Single and Great Collaboration with Leonard Cohen.......2007-01-27

Veteran rockers and humanitarians U2 return with a single that is bold in its determination to focus on the light in these darkened times. A plea and a reflection, they ask us to see what love has done to individuals and to nations, in effect, allowing us to survive and work always to enhance its scope and power.

The collaboration with Canadian Leonard Cohen is exciting as well, demonstrating Cohen's power as a vocalist and wordsmith and the Edge's masterful, I dare say genius, use of the guitar to transport listeners to sonic spaces replete with all the colors of the emotional rainbow.

Just between us, this little two-song set is what the people who live in France refer to as a tour de force.

5 out of 5 stars WORTH IT FOR THE B-SIDE ALONE!.......2007-01-21

Don't get me wrong - "Skies" is a satisfying and ebullient U2 track, but the Leonard Cohen collaboration, "Tower Of Song," is the real attraction here. Cohen's lyrics and delivery are gritty, poetic, and spine-tingling; and Edge's guitar/synth/backing vocal concoction is above-and-beyond. Bono only sings a single, if memorable, verse, but in this rare case it works that he took a back seat - Cohen is incomprable on this song!

"Tower" has officially turned me on to Cohen (whom I only know a few great songs by), and makes me want to check out the tribute film ("I'm Your Man") it originally appeared on. This is one of U2's best singles in years.

5 out of 5 stars American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

5 out of 5 stars Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

    Album Description

    "A remarkable recording." - REPERTOIRE

The nature of Alexander's Feast is perhaps better summed up by its other title, The Power of Music. It is a celebratory ode for St. Cecilia's Day, written by Dryden in 1697 for the traditional celebration of the patron saint of music and set in celebratory style by Handel in 1736. At its first performance that year, he incorporated two delightful concertos, one for harp and one for organ, and these are included on this recording. Winner of the Deutschen Schallplattenkritic prize.

This performance of Alexander's Feast is, in my opinion, exactly right for the work; beautiful, clear voices singing the solos with good diction, a lovely balance in the small chorus, and superb playing of appropriate instruments for the piece and for the period. The notes on the flyer are also excellent, presenting the background and intention of the work.

    5 out of 5 stars Alexander's Feast - English version.......2006-02-26

This recording is a very complete version of Alexander's Feast, following the composer's practice of inserting other pieces to create a performance of appropriate length. Excellent soloists, orchestra, and chorus. A high quality recording.

5 out of 5 stars One of Handel's great works.......2005-11-19

I just attended a live performance of Alexander's Feast and I saw many people who probably never heard anything else than Messiah, suddenly finding out that there is more to Handel than Hallelujah chorus. This music is exciting and original, you may know several arias like "War he said is toil and trouble" or "Revenge!" but it is great as a complete work. It was written for St. Cecilia's Day celebration, then re-written several times, but it remains as a beautiful example of Handel's mastery in choral composition and writing showcase arias. The soloists are great, especially Ian Partridge, and the chorus is outstanding. This is a wonderful performance of one of Handel's great works.

5 out of 5 stars Handel's Great "Feast" in an Impeccable Rendition.......2005-08-22

"Alexander's Feast," Handel's 1736 setting of Dryden's ode in honor of St. Cecilia's Day (patron saint of music) is a masterpiece and a delight, but its odd length - too long for a mixed program, too short for a full evening - gave Handel trouble and apparently still presents a problem: this is at present the only recording of this inspired work in the catalogue, though some good ones have come and gone. Fortunately, this reissue of the Sixteen's 1990 version is first-rate, in fact the best I ever recall hearing, with chorus, orchestra, soloists and conductor all in top form. Furthermore, music director Harry Christophers has wisely chosen to include the two concerti - one for harp, the other for organ - that Handel inserted in his original performances. Not only do they lengthen the piece to a satisfactory 115', they serve a satisfactory dramatic purpose by representing respectively the power of music in its pagan form - the bard Timotheus's lyre represented by the harp - and Christian - Cecilia's (apocryphal) organ. Both receive sparkling interpretations here.
If you enjoy such Handel works as "L'Allegro..." and "Acis and Galatea," you will certainly enjoy "Alexander's Feast," which finds the composer in peak form, responding with eagerness to the high quality of the English verse before him. And it's hard to imagine a better way to get to know it than this wonderful performance.

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

After several recordings of American popular music, Te Kanawa has become a very effective crooner, phrasing with heretofore missing panache. The easy, jazzy Riddle-like arrangements are bouncy and appealing. But after 15 selections, the mysterious dissatisfaction of eating Chinese food and feeling hungry an hour later remains. Tunick writes in his program notes that "the waltz ballads ... are poignant and moving, but never stray into sentimentality." But why not? A little mushiness would serve this recording well, and also contribute to a desperately lacking variety of interpretation. Still, the voice is consistently gorgeous; it would just be nice to distinguish the happy songs from the sad. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Kiri's glorious voice interprets Irving Berlin masterpieces beautifully with expression and respect for these American favorites.

        5 out of 5 stars Get's my vote!.......2004-04-03

OK. Full disclosure: I'm one of those helpless souls who is just madly in love with the sounds that emanate from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's vocal chords. I suppose there are many artists who can interpret Irving Berlin's songs with more, what's the word, authenticity?

And I've heard many of them, and I love their work.

But Kiri Te Kanawa is different. She was given one of the most beautiful instruments in the history of sound recordings. Thank God the recording companies figured out what they had and put her in front of a microphone early and often.

We have had a rare opportunity to experience a great artist from almost the start of her career clear through to what now must be it's final stages.

        I, for one, feel privileged.

Thank you, Dame Kiri. The world is a little better place because of you.

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy and Beautiful.......2002-09-01

This album exemplifies Kiri's amazing, vast dose of talent for musical interpretation. Though I tend to enjoy mostly classical music, this album has opened doors to a wonderful world of classical-jazz, which I find quite beautiful! Perhaps for some, it is an aquired taste...yet I was hooked the moment I heard track one...and have since become quite the "modern Kiri" fan!~Brava once again~

        5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2002-05-14

If you like Irving Berlin and Kiri Te Kanawa you'll probably enjoy this album as much as I do!

I can imagine Nick and Nora Charles listening to this at one of Nick's favorite dives! It will transport you to a sophisticated time and place that may have never existed except in literature and debutante coming out parties.

Gatsby would have loved it, and surely would have invited Kiri to all his parties!

        1 out of 5 stars Simply Dreadful.......2001-01-17

Just terrible! Although her voice has mellowed and is quite beautiful, Ms Te Kanawa has absolutely no instinct or feel for this distinctly American music. She's just lost in her own peculiar Kiwi wonderland. She is not aided but what have to be some of the worst arrangements of this music ever recorded.

Her version of "What'll I do" alone earns her a place on the top ten list of abominable recordings of American music.
