Serious artists don't usually get discovered via TV talent shows, but this 21-year-old former Nashville Star finalist has become an important songwriter and vocalist with her debut album, Kerosene, which immediately sprang to the top of the country charts. Overall, it's a set of amiable country pop, but the title track and "What About Georgia?," which open the disc, are rock songs at heart--driven by a hard-smacked snare drum and layers of guitar. But what's really at the core of these excellent performances is Lambert's romantic lyrics and versatile singing. When she's playing the angry lover in "Kerosene," she's loaded with punky attitude. When she's brokenhearted and moving on in "New Strings," her soft, delicate tones and gentle phrasing perfectly capture a rich blend of sadness and hope. There's even a bit of Dolly Parton's sweet vibrato and rustic charm in "Me and Charlie Talking," a nostalgic contemplation on love and life's simple virtues. Lambert authored or co-penned 11 of Kerosene's dozen tunes, but what she's really written is the first chapter in what may be a long, impressive career. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
Sister and Law loved it.......2007-05-13
My Sister and Law loves Miranda Lambert, and she said every song was superb on the album.
A stunning debut.......2007-01-04
If 'Kerosene' is any indication, we will be hearing Miranda Lambert's name for a long time to come. The songs are all strong, Lambert's songwriting ability at this stage of the game speaks of unlimited potential. The title cut is pure fun and energy, 'I Wanna Die' is a playful, sultry bass guitar driven romp. 'I Can't Be Bothered' and 'Me and Charlie Talking' are pure unabated country -- not the Adult Contemporary drivel that clogs mainstream country radio these days. Her ballads are very appealing as well, including 'Greyhound Bound For Nowhere' with the poignant lyric "She loves you and you need me, but there's some things we can't share".
One of the things that surprised me the most about this album are the excellent arrangements and musicianship. Often, especially for female country artists, the music is unimaginative, purposely pushed to the background to highlight the vocalist's talent. That is not the case here, each song is crafted with care, such as the excellent percussion effect on 'Me and Charlie', and the guitar swells on 'Greyhound'. Lambert's backing group is allowed to breathe and demonstrate their substantial skills. I definitely recommend this album to anyone who loves authentic country or Texas music.
Lambert Has Potential.......2007-01-02
With "Kerosene," former "Nashville Star" Miranda Lambert has set the bar high for herself in contemporary Country. Having written or co-authored most of the tracks on this album, she has already set herself apart from many of her popular peers. Songs like the heavily Pop Country "Me and Charlie Talking" and "What About Georgia" got her in the door in Nashville and on the air in the pop-flooded field of Country radio, but it's her other songs that will add longevity to her career. Tunes like the title track, a snappy, sassy, kick-to-the-teeth tune will win over fans in the Gretchen Wilson arena while not coming off as fluff, whereas tunes like "Greyhound Bound for Nowhere" and "Love is Looking For You" will garner the admiration of serious songwriting fans. Her only major misfire on this album is the Tim McGraw-esque cheesy, "I Wanna Die." It hearkens back to a day whenever "Refried Dreams" and "Indian Outlaw" ruled the airwaves.
Lambert also has something that can either help or hinder her career. She's good-looking. That's not meant to be derogatory in any way. The problem with being attractive in Country music these days is that no matter how serious your songwriting is, you'll always be compared to "style over substance" stars such as Faith Hill, Martina McBride, and lesser wannabe pop divas. Hopefully Nashville won't lump Lambert into this group. Instead, I hope she's allowed to do things on her own terms and leave the style coaching to lighter torch-queens like Hill and McBride.
In a perfect world, Lambert will focus more of her attention on serious Country tunes. If she does that, this young lady will establish herself as a major player in Nashville. She may not win all of the glitzy awards or grab the attention of "People" magazine, but I have a feeling that Lambert will be around longer than many of today's upstart Country performers. In fact, as long as she doesn't fall into the glitzy trappings of contemporary Pop Country, she may be looked upon as an important factor in what could be a rebirth of the Country songwriter. That'd be a welcome renaissance in a genre which has given in to numbers and let substance in song fall to the wayside.
You know- If Cledus says Shania is his, Miranda's mine!.......2006-10-12
Right now, it's rare to see Miranda on CMT or GAC, well, I watched ALL of
her 'out' songs, "New Strings", "Kerosene", "Bring me Down", and "Me and
Charlie Talking." They are awesome. In "Kerosene", Miranda made it look l-
ike ALL hell was gonna break loose. From "New Strings", we saw the happier
side of her, as if she got a puppy or a kitten, in "Bring me Down", she w-
as a very passionate and obedient love-begger which reveals the hot side
of a country music lady. In "Me and Charlie talking", it was like "New St-
rings", she was happy to have a faithful boyfriend (I think I got a girlf-
riend!) But overall, I listen to this CD everyday like I do "Some Hearts"
and yeah! Whoever the "Anonymous Country Music Singer" is, he'd better q-
uit making those white trash reviews. I like Dolly Parton like he does, b-
ut enough is enough, if he has done it to "Blake Shelton's Barn and Grill"
or "Twice than the Speed of Life (or Light)", I sue the pants off of him!
He WILL not insult my Miranda!
She's Lighting This Industry On FIRE with KEROSENE!!!.......2006-09-27
BURN BABY BURN!!! This album is gonna burn straight through the wall between country and pop--it's AMAZING!!! The best songs are: Kerosene (my fave), Greyhound Bound For Nowhere, I Wanna Die, Love Is Looking For You, Mama I'm Alright and There's A Wall. In other words: GO BUY THIS ALBUM!! YOU DEFINITELY WON'T REGRET IT!

Many alternative-rock fans considered Camper Van Beethoven an important band, but I wasn't among them. Guitarist/vocalist David Lowerey always seemed smarmy and ridiculously happy with his own cleverness. Lowrey's new band, Cracker, has the potential to be even more annoying, since the quartet places the spotlight solely on its leader and songwriter, but its self-titled 1992 debut was a strong effort with a smart, infectious single ("Teen Angst"), and Kerosene Hat is even better. Recorded with stripped- down simplicity on an abandoned soundstage at the edge of the Mojave desert, the album concentrates on the band's undeniably catchy country-flavored garage punk. "Go For A Ride" is perfect highway music, and the single "Low" is almost as good as "Teen Angst." Unfortunately, the most inspired title and song topic-"Hi Desert Biker Meth Lab"-turns out to be wasted on a short snippet of noise and studio chatter. --Jim DeRogatis
Customer Reviews:
One of the great albums of the 90's.......2007-04-20
When I first heard Kerosene Hat, it was on one side of a 90 min cassette recording a buddy made for me; the other side was of Cracker's Golden Age (another gem). This cassette didn't leave my deck until a few years later when I finally purchased the CD. Their cover of Jerry Garcia's Loser is brilliant - especially Johnny Hickman's great guitar. Speaking of Hickman (of whom I'm a huge fan), I could do without his one contribution to the album, "Lonesome Johnny Blues"; otherwise, a perfect album.
This grew on me.......2007-02-19
When I bought this back in the day it was on the strength of the lead single "Low." I listened to it once or twice, and then it sat on the shelf a while.
Then I remember a friend of mine who mentioned that he really liked these guys cos of their strong songwriting, etc. I sort of looked at him and was like sure Jon, whatever you say.
Then about 7 years back, I ripped my entire CD collection to MP3 and listened to it again. I don't know if it's because I'm in a different place in my life now, but I really like it. I still listen to this record occasionally, it's held up remarkably well over time.
Great record!.......2006-12-14
This record, Cracker's second is a very good one. The songs are catchy, the lyrics are funny and the production is almost perfect. I'm a Camper Van Beethoven fan who liked the first Cracker cd a lot but Kerosene Hat is a gem.
If you like you're music real, try this record.
not what I expected.......2006-12-01
There is only one song on the entire cd that is worth listening to.
Excellent, start to finish.......2006-05-16
I bought this album as part of a reduced price deal cause I liked one of the hidden tracks "Eurotrash Girl" Well after a couple of listens I had to admit this was an undeniably great album. In fact, I have bought everything Cracker has ever put out since, they really are a great band that just knows how to write great songs. You will not be disappointed with this one.

Not a weak song on the album, great writing, great music. One of my best buys.
On Fire.......2006-01-05
Miranda Lambert has sure come a long way since her 3rd place finish on Nashville Star. This album is rockin' and on fire all the way. If you want a good country album with some soulfull lyrics, this is the CD for you. Miranda also wrote or cowrote almost every song on the album.
"Kerosene" Not Quite That Flaming.......2005-09-26
Prime Cuts: Greyhound Bound for Nowhere, I Can't Be Bothered, Kerosene
"Kerosene," Lambert's major label debut, unleashes out of the gate with a roar: debuting at the apical position of the Billboard country album chart and boasting a top 30 single "Me and Charlie Talking," this former Nashville star contestant is definitely turning heads. This comes as no surprise as Lambert, who sounds like Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines sonic sister, is an arresting vocalist who sings with virtuosity and volubility. Furthermore, with its booming percussions, snarling electric guitar riffs and hard-edged sounding acoustic guitars, this has a mass appeal to those who are fans outside the rustic edges of country music. Liken perhaps to a Southern Kelly Clarkson, save for a couple of more country numbers, "Kerosene" could pass muster for a contemporary pop album.
Regardless of genre specificity, how does "Kerosene" fair? Needless to say there are a few prized moments: Aficionados of country music's equivalent of "American Idol," "Nashville Star" would have remembered Lambert's arresting performance of the plaintive ballad "Greyhound Bound for Nowhere." Penned by Lambert (who wrote or co-wrote all but one track), "Greyhound" tells the agonies of a disillusioned divorcee finally leaving behind her past behind. Though such a theme is perennial within the canon of country music, Lambert's impassioned nuances engulfs an authentic ache and regret making her performance here a tour de force. Trying to hide behind the marquee of self pretense, the protagonist of "I Can't Be Bothered" has her true feelings of heartache exposed by the song's wailing steel guitars and its mournful sounding fiddles. On an album that is decisively pop slanted, with its Patsy Cline-like backings, the traditional sounding "I Can't Be Bothered" is a gem.
Less striking, however, still worthy of listening is the title track. With a Gretchen Wilson redneck kick-your-ass faux, "Kerosene" finds a feisty, cuspidate and strong willed Lambert ready to set her roving man aright. Despite an abyssal attempt to create an integument sounding intro, the pop sounding ballad "Me and Charlie Talking" is a little too treacly. This is the problem with the rest of the material here: While Lambert explores salient themes such as a depreciative relationship ("Bring Me Down"), the disintegration of communication ("There's a Wall") and starting anew ("New Strings") she does not deal with them beyond a nondescript way. They are not bad, but it's that these tunes are far too polished with a commercial sheen to be viscerally acerbic. Maybe the culprit lies with Lambert herself as she pens too many of the songs here.
With her fetching good looks, her enthralling and vivacious vocals, Lambert is a name to watch. However, "Kerosene," is let down primarily by its largely unremarkable material. Save for the prime cuts mentioned above, this is a pretty average Nashpop album that finds more affinity with the stars of American Idol than Nashville Star.

This is his first CD I've bought and it's stil my favourite. The music is kind of sad...but in a pozitive, inspiring way...I like Under the weather best because I sense the feeling of this song is slavic in someway. I love his songs partly because I believe he's making them for himself and not for being famous.

Refreshing, original twist on country roots blues........1999-09-19
Ha! I haven't even heard the recording, but I caught their act at the San Diego Street Scene, and I'm going to scoop up this CD on my next purchase. If you enjoyed "discovering" Steve Earle, get in on this now.
Halford 's KEROSENE showcases his intuitive songwriting ........1999-06-06
Halford blends traditional blues, roots rock and grind'em out rock'n'roll into a one-two punch on KEROSENE. Each song showcases his superb, intuitive songwriting abilities. Halford writes the likes of James McMurtry and Springsteen into a corner as he grapples with age-old emotional conflicts ("Bad Luck", "Beauty In You", "Pablo And Me"), instilling new twists on life's oldest struggles.
Halford employs a Louisiana-flavored musical style on "A Thousand Times", reminiscent of the Sub-Dudes, as he weaves a "love-gone-south" story. Chops are humid, nostalgic and languid, as he describes his darkest moments.."bloodshot dreary eyes" weeping about his lost love. Perfect for those summertime blues.
Halford's respect for the Delta blues kings-specifically Robert Johnson- can be heard in his haunting slide guitar work on "On A Roll," which he tempers with a hard, visceral bass and tasty organ grounding to form the musical backdrop. Like in the land of CREEM, he uses just a few instruments to bang out an infectious, slow dance groove.
"Stella Guitar", "Creole Moon" and "Kerosene" are powerful guitar-driven social statement songs that could easily fit into a movie soundtrack. "Drivin Alone" is a pulsating cruisin' song with smokin' slide guitar licks that make you want to hit the blacktop at full speed.
