Album Description
Mississippi-born songstress Bobbie Gentry burned up the country and pop Billboard charts in 1967 with her single "Ode To Billie Joe," knocking "All You Need Is Love" out of the prime #1 position, a huge feat for a new artist who had little to no hype preceding her. An astonishing 750,000 copies of the single flew from record store shelves nationally. In 1972, Gentry issued her fifth and final album, with a smattering of individual songs surfacing over the next few years. She spent the remainder of the `70s performing in Las Vegas and Reno before turning her back on the music business and disappearing from sight. Although Bobbie Gentry no longer records or performs, her legacy continues to inspire contemporary musicians. Lucinda Williams, Shelby Lynne and Beth Orton are but a few artists who cite Gentry as a major influence on their work.
"`Ode To Billie Joe' fit right into this Southern Gothic tradition. It had that mystery, that darkness. It was a different voice, a blend of blues and country and folk that was totally unique." Lucinda Williams
Chickasaw County Child: The Artistry Of Bobbie Gentry is the first collection to embrace her unique, complex breadth of work and reveal her as more than a "hit" country artist, casting light on Bobbie as a premiere female rock artist who ventured into uncharted territory.
Contemporary artists as varied as Sheryl Crow, Reba McEntire and The Geraldine Fibbers have all recorded her songs.
"Ode To Billie Joe" dethroned The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" from Billboard's #1 position in 1967.
Disc compiled by noted reissues producer Gary Stewart, with liner notes by Holly George-Warren.
Winner of three Grammy® awards for her 1967 debut including Best New Artist, plus an Academy of Country Music award.

Excellent.......2007-06-22
I was not too familiar with Bobbie, other than her major hits. But I thoroughly enjoy this album. It is really soulful and mellow - good background music during dinner or good for laying on the couch and just listening to every word.
Great "Ode to Billie Joe" .......2007-02-13
You'll never be the same if you listen to "Ode to Billie Joe". Warning, it may change you into a very very fascinating human being.
Simply Brilliant - Chills Up The Spine.......2004-10-11
For 40 years I had appreciated "Ode to Billie Joe" as one of the most perfect and unique few minutes ever committed to vinyl, but had never too seriously dug into the rest of her music. This collection has me kicking myself and resolved to make up for my sad oversight. This is an EXTRAORDINARY cd by a tremendous talent. I mean EXTRAORDINARY. If the world can rediscover and shower respect upon Nancy Sinatra, it's certainly time to spread the word about Ms. Gentry. I haven't found a cd by a female artist as riveting and compelling since I first discovered Kate Bush, and that's 25 years ago. My favorite female vocalist of all time is dear departed Dusty Springfield... but I'll tell you, Ms. Gentry is beginning to affect me in the very same way, with her voice getting under my skin, as though she were singing just inches from my ear. Stunning work...unlike anything I've ever heard...and she wrote the songs! Bobbie, wherever you are (are you still in the Savannah area?) please know that your work lives on and is clearly unsurpassed.
Best collection yet of her earlier work........2004-09-30
(This is a partial rewrite of my epinions review.)
I grew up listening to Bobbie Gentry's first three albums with my family (and they are well-worn records) so it surprised me to realize years later when I went to track down her music on CD that she wasn't exactly a household name (save a few radio hits.)
I further found it frustrating and bewildering that the available compilation albums seemed to lean more towards her later mainstream, pop radio friendly work (Glen Campbell duets, etc.)
Chickasaw County Child: The Artistry of Bobbie Gentry is a important step in the right direction. Of the 23 tracks more than half are from the early albums (Ode to Billie Joe and The Delta Sweete) and most of the last ten were at least worth a listen - coming mostly from singles and her last album Patchwork. As an introduction to her entire career it's a good start.
Having said that, I would point out that her material NOT included in this collection would make an excellent second volume in it's own right. I easily count another dozen originals that could have been included before considering her many covers. The exclusion of the very cool rap-like tune 'Reunion' and her cover versions of Blues numbers like 'Tobacco Road' and 'Niki Hoeky' (to name just two) are my biggest disappointments with this compilation.
It probably wishful thinking, but hopefully this collection precipitates the re-release of her entire catalog (The Delta Sweete in particular should be enjoyed in it's entirety as cuts are transitioned one into the next.)
Bobbie Gentry was the prototypical female singer-songwriter and here she finally gets a chance to show what should have made her a pre-eminent performer throughout the world (not just Las Vegas and the UK) the first time around. If you enjoy artists who cross over musical boundaries (in her case Country, Delta Blues, Soul, R&B, Rock, Pop, etc., etc.) to create works that are personal and inventive then please check her out!
Absolutely essential!.......2004-04-28
Beyond "Ode to Billie Joe," I wasn't familiar with Bobbie Gentry's work. I read a great review of this album on AMG, though, and decided the time was ripe to investigate. I'm so glad I did.
She's got this great funky Southern sound--sort of like early Charlie Rich--but she marries it to eerie orchestral arrangements, sort of like Tim Hardin. Her songs often describe alienated or melancholy or just plain weird scenarios, but her voice--a low, husky purr--keeps it grounded. This is a fantastic album that anyone who likes Charlie Rich, Tim Hardin, or Dusty Springfield will love.

Album Description
There was a time when country fans didn't listen to rock music and rock fans didn't listen to country. It was the way of the world and there was little room for exception. Today, every form borrows from those who came before. Rappers sample jazz and rock, while electronic artists re-envision Elvis. So it's no wonder that a number of respected country artists would tackle the genius that is Bob Dylan. This disc compiles the greatest countrified versions of Dylan ever recorded.
Includes an out-of-print Buck Owens song, plus collectible tracks by Emmylou Harris, Earl Scruggs with Bob Dylan, Country Gentleman and Norman Blake. Liner notes by award-winning writer Eddie Gorodetsky, who appeared in the Dylan film Masked And Anonymous.
Customer Reviews:
OK Dylan covers.......2006-12-19
AMG had a fairly glowing review of this CD, so I checked out a copy from our public library network to give it a listen. Although it's a pleasant enough collection of Dylan songs - and with a few real highlights - Jerry Jeff Walker's take on "One Too Many Mornings" for example, I don't think the CD as a whole warrants serious praise.
A few of these covers I have elsewhere in my collection, not to mention some of the Dylan versions, so there's no need for me to pursue this further right now. Still, if I see this at a bargain price, say under $5, I might scoop it up.
Good, but flawed.......2005-01-21
Good idea, but the track selection could have been better. There are many more true country covers that could/should have been used, instead of several of these tracks that are bluegrass or folk rather than country. Dave Dudley, George Hamilton IV, Ray Stevens, Jerry Reed, The Browns, John Anderson, Statler Brothers come to mind. I was also surprised to see the re-use of Restless Farewell from A Nod To Bob, another Dylan tribute from just a couple of years ago.
FYI: Nashville Skyline Rag is Earl Scruggs with Bob Dylan, and Heartland is the Willie Nelson & Bob Dylan duet. Bob also plays harmonica on Boots of Spanish Leather.
best version of Dylan song by another artist...?.......2004-06-02
I would say "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" by the bluegrass band The Seldom Scene with vocals by the late great John Duffy. Too bad it was left off this CD... would have been a great fit. Also, "Rita Mae" by Jerry Lee Lewis (from his late 70's Elektra LP) would have been an cool country-rockin' choice for this collection. Overall, though, I guess this is a nice mix of the obvious and the obscure. And heaven knows there is plenty of material out there for a Volume 2 (including the two I mentioned).
Let's hope they're working on that now!
mysterious.......2004-05-26
Why, in this era of of iTunes et al do CDs like this exist? Any of us can now pull together a mix CD based on whatever theme we like. The only reasons for relying on the record companies to pull something together like this:
1) Liner notes/documentation. Well, these liner notes are worthless! And, the recording details are minimal.
2) Great songs not currently on CD. OK, I gotta give them their props here: Glen Campbell's take on "If Not for You" hasn't been in print since the early 1970s. Ditto for Buck Owens'"Love Minus Zero." And, bonus points for unearthing the Kitty Wells take on "Forever Young."
3) Great remastered sound. Nope.
One out of three...ain't good. And, to make matters worse, "Dylan Country" doesn't even live up to its name. I love the Byrds. But (a) they aren't a country band and (b) this isn't even their best rendition of "You Ain't Going Nowhere." Almost every country music great from the 1960s-1980s recorded a Dylan song. So, why does this compilation feature dubious acts like Jennifer Warnes (Jennifer Warnes?!), Tim O'Brien and Peter Ostroushko, while passing on artists like Jerry Reed, Flying Burrito Bros., the Carter Sisters, Flatt & Scruggs (though, granted, Scruggs is here), Doc Watson, Kris Kristofferson, Carlene Carter, Toni Price, Jason & the Scorchers, and others. Passing on Emmylou Harris's definitive cover of "Every Grain of Sand" in favor of "When I Paint my Masterpiece" is similarly odd.
One of the Best Compilations I've ever Heard.......2004-05-19
This has got such a great lineup of country music legends interpreting Dylan's music, I don't even know where to start.
Willie, Waylon, Johnny, Hank Jr., Buck Owens, Kitty Wells, the Byrds, and Ms. Emmylou are just a few who do spectacular versions of Bob's classic material as well as some lesser known work. The tracklisting is great, the artists are spectacular and the performances are extraordinary. Buck Owens' "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" might be the best thing on here, if it weren't for Kitty Wells' "you have to hear this to believe it" take of the anthemic "Forever Young" to close out the disc. I am not kidding when I say next to the Hank Sr. and Gram Parsons tribute CDs, this might be the best thing I've heard for a compilation.
Check this out, it seriously has not left my car stereo since I got it.

Slowly but surely my favorite 'Pop' group.......2006-03-28
Slapp Happy 'live in Japan' gives you a special sensation after a few hearings. There's a melancholy through out not aparent in the studio versions. I've never heard Dagmar (the singer) with such soft and almost wispering voice before this record. Also the striped down approach to the songs gives them a new , almost like a farewell, sort of quality. Not really a record to start your Slapp Happy collection (start with
'Sort of' or their first lp made in germany...their recent one, 'Ca va' is good too...If you are more into progressive music start with 'Desperate Straights').
This is an album to listen when you want something dreamy and special in the air. Recommended.
Music to help us smile- At long last -Slapp Happy live.......2005-05-05
The songs written and performed by Anthony Moore (keyboards), Peter Blegvad (guitar) and Dagmar Krause (leading vocals) are wonderful.
These gifted artists should have won a Grammy award and played to sold out concert halls with their unique sounds.
Unfortunately, they only played a few shows in Japan.
Selections from those concerts are presented on this cd. This cd is worth the price to play.

2 1/2 stars-- again, signs of things to come........2007-07-09
In many ways like their debut record, Basya Schecter's Pharaoh's Daughter's sophomore record, "Exile", has that feeling of home demo, except this time the band seems to have shed many of the folk leanings of their debut for a more pop (or maybe faux-electronica) meets Arab sound. Gone are the overt Jewish/Klezmer influences, so present on their "Daddy's Pockets" (and their later records).
This sonic change actually works pretty well-- Schecter's confident vocal and superb songwriting can carry the album well, but the track selection leads much to be desired, with no less than half a dozen midtempo numbers to open the album up, lending a blending feel of one cut ("Run") to another ("Man in my Head"), the notable standout being "Exile", which sounds like an electronica piece even though it lacks any of the typical electronica elements.
The second half of the record does significantly better, barring the odd spoken word "Paradise Hung" (which sounds like a good idea whose time hasn't quite arrived). "Statue" provides great swirling vocals interspersed with acoustic guitars, "Going Nowhere" picks up a bouncing energy and a seemingly endless array of oddball sounds and freak guitar skanks in the background, and even when it surrenders to midtempo ("Confession"), there's enough going on to maintain interest.
Like "Daddy's Pockets", "Exile" points the way for what's to come-- it's a bit unbalanced of a record and I think a bit less of a record than its predecessor. I rate it a bit low as a comparative measure to the superb records that follow. IF you've picked up an interest in the band, this one's worth checking out, otherwise start with "Out of the Reeds" or Schecter's superb solo record "Queen's Dominion".

Anyone who is a real fan of techno/trance will definitely enjoy Sanctuary. I'm not being biased because of the fact that I'm from NYC and Jonathan Peters dj's at the clubs there, but I'm being straight out honest...the 2 cd set is perfect front to back.....
What happened to JP?.......2004-12-02
One word - BORING - JP used to be the heavy metal of house, I could use this cd to fall asleep.....
Brings back the Vibe of SF but not as good as S&M cd.......2004-11-10
Deffinetly a nice mix of pretty old songs . The only thing that saves this cd is JP's talent to mix . This cd should have been released a year ago , then it would have made a better impression on me . But all the tracks on it are deffinetly old . I was there on hallowween of 03 and 04 and I must say that the set JP spun this year was better . Hopefully we wont have to wait until next year to listen to it .
Sanctuary the halloween party!!!!!!!.......2004-10-20
This cd is the most amazing soundfactory cd released. Not as amazing as S&M Party but second best. During the peak hours of this cd, I was there during the whole event and it just brings back sooooo much memories. And its scary that I remember what I did that whole night during that particular song. The sanctuary intro is one of the best soundfactory intros, it just gives me chills everytime I listen to it. The DVD is also fun to watch but some of the scenes are from the S&M Party which I was thinking about. Too bad Im not in there even though I followed the camera everywhere. Buy this set!!!!!! This is one of the last Soundfactory sets that will ever be released unless they reopen the club which will probably never happen. This set is the only resort for the Soundfactory owner Richard Grant to get out debt and prison probably. This is worth every little penny!!!!!!!

If you go to SF and know what it is all about, then I know that you are not even bothering to read this review bc you bought this CD a long time ago. For those of you that don't know, but are interested in the scene this CD is a must for your collection. I have seen JP in South Beach, Cancun, and on the regular at SF for a long time, and I was there the night this Cd was recorded, and as good as it is, it doesn't do the the vibe justice . . . ! So, don't ask questions, just buy it. Check out Live and Revelation while you are at it, you won't be sorry!
JP at his best..........2003-06-15
I live in Massachusetts about 4 hours from the Sound Factory, but I make it a point to go at least every other month, and every time Peters goes to Avalon in Boston. For those that can't make it out that much, this is the next best thing. No one can rock beats like Peters. His mixing capabilities are off the chain and all his own style. If your a Peters or Sound Factory fan, buy this and it has a bonus video. If you've been to a Factory party, you know the dancers rip it. I also suggest Live with Jonathan Peters and Revelation:the S&M Party.
Wish it could have 6 stars.......2002-11-13
Off the hook!!!!! I rarely get the chance to drive up to NY from Jersey, but this CD brings it down here for me!!! Unreal how for that hour or so it brings that NY vibe!!! JP is the man...and deserves more recognition!!!
A Treat for "Factory Heads" and House music fans everywhere!.......2002-11-04
SF, those two letters mean a lot to me and people that share a love for the place those two letters stand for.
Sound Factory.
Add Jonathan, fill with "Pretty People" and you have some glorious magic. I have been going to clubs all over for a long time and no other is like this place. Its a home, a shelter...a family and one heck of a great time.
This CD set contains just a small portion of that experience but it's one that is bound to please. Recorded from the 13th Anniversary this year, you get to taste or relive one of Sound Factories best parties of the year.
Jonathan Peters feeds the crowd hard hitting beats and builds them up thoughout most of the set and then unleashes near the endings. If you enjoy quick house builds then you may get annoyed at Jonathans spinning as he takes his time to get "sick" with the crowd but still hits hard while he builds. His timing is perfect though, as always and blew me away. He has a way of building up emotion until you almost want to cry out and ask for a release. Peters balances right on the edge of that and then lets it all go, flooding musical bliss through you ears and into your soul.
I advise to listen to each seperate cd at once rather than skipping tracks...both cd's play like books and need the other tracks to support the one that is coming up to make "house music" sense. If you are already a SF family member then skipping is alright (I know those looking for "that" track will want to) but hearing the crowd is a treat in it self.
If there is anything wrong with this great set I would have to say two things get to me:
One. the enjoyable but short Sound Factory video on the first cd. You will want to see more when its over and I think video is really important these days.
Two. Only two cd's!!! This party went on for 24hours and should have had more coverage. I say this simply because Factory patrons know this party gets to its peaks levels between 6am and 11am and this cd set sounds like it only covers the early hours (11pm to 4am).
Simply put though this cd set is amazing. If you enjoy house music by all means buy this. If you enjoy Factory then I'm sure I don't have to write anything to convince you on the purchase!
I't will have you dancing in your chair! Long live the "Factory"!

Legend has it that former Sex Pistols/PIL frontman John Lydon occupied himself on the road by recording and collecting hotel piano-bar renditions of Morris Albert's bathetic classic, "Feelings." But there's considerably more than snarky irony at work on this three-disc, 60-track anthology of romantic pop-chart fodder from the Classic Rock era. While Albert is joined here in the heart-on-their-sleeves sweepstakes by such daunting challengers as Debby Boone ("You Light Up My Life") and "Colour My Word"-era Chicago, this collection also deftly underscores the inclusive, remarkably eclectic sensibility that once powered Top 40 radio. In doing so, it also can't help but pay tribute to the smartly economic songwriting ethos that informed everything from the impossibly infectious pop of Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "More Today Than Yesterday" by Spiral Staircase to the sex-symbol yin and yang of Engelbert Humperdinck and Tom Jones, the pan-American cool jazz of Sergio Mendes, the sublime soul of Dusty Springfield, and the dusky country-blues of Crystal Gayle. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
What's on that fourth disc?.......2006-09-16
My copy of Straight From The Heart came with a fourth disc. The track listing wasn't listed on the back of the box with the track listings from the other three discs. There was, however, a small sticker on the front saying there was a fourth disc inside.
The mystery fourth disc features 10 tracks recorded live on May 13th and 14th, 2003 at the Benendum Center For The Performing Arts in Pittsburgh. The songs on the fourth disc are as follows:
1. The 5th Dimension - Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In
2. The 5th Dimension - (Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep At All
3. B.J. Thomas - Hooked On A Feeling
4. B.J. Thomas - Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head
5. B.J. Thomas - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
6. The Association - Cherish
7. Dionne Warwick - I'll Never Love This Way Again
8. Dionne Warwick - Do You Know The Way To San Jose?
9. Tony Orlando & Dawn - Candida/Knock Three Times
10. Debby Boone - You Light Up My Life
Guilty, as Charged!.......2004-11-25
This boxed set contains one guilty pleasure after another! Even though many of the songs I had not heard for years/decades, I found I immediately recalled the words and was singing along, barely realizing it until I was in mid-song! Even though numerous "styles" of music are included, this is pop, pop and more pop. If you are like myself, and were a teenager in the Seventies, most of these songs will bring back many memories of people, places and events which had been hiding in the far corners of your memory...waiting for these songs to set them free! This three-cd package is guaranteed to supply you with many hours of musical pleasure.
WHAT MEMORIES - WHAT GREAT MEMORIES!.......2004-09-12
You can't help but love all the monster hit single tracks and artists featured here - mostly a scattered few late 60's hits and a whole lotta 70's pop-rock chart toppers and quite memorable Top 40 Radio and Chart gold singles! "Oh! What memories - what memories from nineteen 60/70 something..." exclaimed that Dee-Jay on the classic Carpenters "Yesterday Once More" LP's "60's Medley" - and you can't fight the feeling here either! Through the ages, many Pop Music critics have often written many of these genuinely classic recordings off as "schmaltzy pop-rock", but, truth be told - none of those morons ever recorded nor landed a "hit single" of their own! This is CLASSIC AMERICAN POP ROCK at it's ultimate BEST! Don't pass it up!
