best cd ever.......2007-04-28
okay, i only named it that because of the few who rated it 1 star and... the one who rated it 3. it really is one of my favorite cd's though. it is an aquired taste and a love it or hate it cd. if you rate this a 3, i really don't understand you. i have fallen asleep to this cd blasting in my headphones once, and that is truly terrible. because this is probably THE heaviest cd i own, and although the members have changed (besides scogin) the chariot continue to rule with UNSUNG and the fiancee. they never cease to amaze me, but this album will take time to grow on you. once you do, you WILL NOT put it down for a LONG time.
The Ch Ch Ch Ch Ch Ch Chariot!!!!.......2006-04-21
Well, obviously if you are looking at the reviews for this CD you may be seeing that people either LOVE this CD or HATE this CD. I am one of those that LOVE it. The Chariot is mainly a thrash band without the 30 second songs. They have all the brutality of The Locust, Et Tu Brute? and bands in that genre without having 1.) The blood lusty, depressing lyrics, and 2.) The half minute songs that all sound the same after an hour of listening.
The Chariot is fronted by Josh Scogin of Norma Jean (Who, by the way, does a LOT better than the new vocalist they have). He has a huge range with his vocals and brings over his trademark long song titles for this CD. (Check out the title for track #2) But the lyrics he writes are poetic and uplifting, not dark and disturbing like others in the genre. And if you pick up "Everything Is Alive..." check out their "Unsung EP" with some new music and a concert video that is wicked. Bottom line is, though, you are going to like it or hate it. So maybe borrow it before you buy it to check it out. But if you are a fan of Norma Jean or even As I Lay Dying, you should give it a once over.
Chaotic Metal: Definitely An Acquired Taste.......2006-04-06
I got a good laugh out of the sticker on the corner of "Everything Is Alive..." that read something like "For Fans of Opeth, Unearth, and ASHLEE SIMPSON". A band on Solid State Records that sounds like a mediocre pop "star"? Yeah right; this band definitely has sense of humor.
When I first played the CD, I listened to the first track all the way through. I absolutely hated it. I then skipped through all the other tracks and listened to about 30 seconds of each. More of the same. I couldn't believe that I had wasted my money on this pile of slow-paced loud noisy garbage. The guitar feedback grated on my eardrums, and I ended up with a massive headache. Needless to say, I took a break from The Chariot for a while.
A few weeks later, however, the song "Die Interviwer" popped up on my mp3 player's random shuffle, so I listened to the whole song. I could actually tolerate it. Soon, I started listening to more and more songs from the album, and I was amazed by the realness of the sound, and the incredible brutality of it all: the ripping guitars, the pounding drums, and the lead singer, who roars like a man possessed. I listened to the album all the way through, and I was hooked.
The Chariot is a truly incredible band, and is nothing like I've ever heard before. They draw a listener in more than Norma Jean ever will. They are just as amazingly brutal in concert, also. However, a word of warning: You cannot just start listening to this band. A love of metal is required, and you have to be open to new styles. I would recommend listening to bands such as Becoming the Archetype before picking this album up. But it is well worth it; listening to The Chariot is a breathtaking experience.
DO NOT!.......2006-02-20
This is one of the worst metal releases of all and I mean
ALL time. Lots of long song titles that make no sense and
are stupid. Short songs. Sloppy metal. Horrible screaming.
Crap. Get zao instead.
Feedbackfest 04! Starring The Chariot.......2006-02-08
Well.......what to say about this album other than.....it has mroe feedback than a Who concert (even at 13 decibels haha!) This one is decent at best....I'm glad a friend of mine burned it for me instead of me going out and actually paying full price because it's not that great. I was expecting so much from Scogin but ya know what......if you really want to hear what this band can really do, check out The Unsung EP. Now I can understand how most people really love the rawness, I am one of them believe me, but ya know what....there is only so much feedback that one person can take without wanting to throw the CD out the window. The one blessing that this album gives you is that it's only 29 minutes long. My favorite song on the CD by far is track 5 And Then, Came Then. I love the intro with the classical music, then Josh's bone rattling roar blasts from the speakers. If you're looking for Norma Jean 2....don't listen to this CD. The only thing NJ about this CD is Scogin. But if you're interested in The Chariot, listen to The Unsung EP...the songs have more of a polish but it still showcases the talent wonderfully.

Barber's Knoxville, Summer of 1915 is a setting of a lovely chunk of prose text by James Agee describing an evening from his childhood. An accomplished singer himself, Barber's vocal writing is expert, and this work must rank as one of the finest examples of the art of word-setting in any language. Barber perfectly captures the conversational quality of the text, while at the same time clothing the words in an atmosphere of gentle nostalgia. It's a masterpiece that Dawn Upshaw sings with keen insight and lovely tone. The remainder of the program is creatively chosen as well, making this one of the finest vocal recitals available by an American singer. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Material for Ms. Upshaw........2006-04-26
'Knoxville: Summer of 1915' is a performance of a selection of operatic pieces by Americans such as Samuel Barber or Europeans transplanted to the United States, such as Igor Stravinsky. Ms. Upshaw shines with material, which is good for her, since she is just slightly out of her league with the material covered by the likes of Renee Flemming on the operatic front and Ute Lemper and Lotte Lenya on the Euro/American popular musical stage.
Like any good sampler, this recording's strongest draw is the fact that it makes one interested in tracking down the complete works by Barber, Menotti, Harbison, and Stravinsky. And, while the package includes all lyrics, everything is in perfectly clear English. A perfect addition to other American classics such as 'Porgy and Bess'.
Keeps Getting Better.......2005-03-02
I have had this disc for years, and I'm more impressed with it as the years roll by. I bought it for Barber's "Knoxville, Summer of 1915" which is a glorious piece of music caught here in a luminous performance. I didn't initially warm up to the Harbison songs, but they have grown on me over the years to the point that I listen to them far more often than the Barber now. I think it just took me a while to absorb Harbison's style and understand how deftly and ingeniously he uses it to take the listener into Mirabai's world. Not to be missed!
The Barber alone is worth five stars.......2004-01-16
People are always saying that they find a particular piece of music is "haunting." For me Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" is such a work. Dawn Upshaw's reading of this great American masterwork is the best I have yet heard. She won her first Grammy Award for this recording - and deservedly so. If you're a fan of either Upshaw or Barber you'll want to add this beautiful CD to your collection.
Buy this disc...twice!.......2002-07-20
Extraordinary!! This has got to be the definitive Knoxville--rich, touching, elegant and as close to perfect as it can probably ever be. Upshaw has the perfect voice for this work, and she gives it all the loving attention that it requires. This is a performance of Knoxville that will make you weak in the knees. For the Knoxville alone, buy this disc....twice! There is, however, just a little bit of downside here. The other works on this disc just aren't very captivating.
Dawn Upshaw, vocal actress extraordinaire.......2002-01-01
This is the CD that made me fall in love with Dawn Upshaw's singing. I had heard her before and admired her work, but this disc made me a real fan. As it's one of her early recordings, her voice is somewhat "fuller" than on later work; she later started moving the voice "forward," simplifying the sound. Either way, her immense talent for communicating the essence of the text is the outstanding aspect of all her work. It's amazing how she can sound angry, desperate, hopeful, melancholic, all while producing a beautiful sound and tackling all the vocal challenges of the music she's singing. She inhabits the characters, the narrators, of each of the pieces on this disc, and makes it more than just a collection of songs or arias.
I want to make special mention of the Harbison _Mirabai Songs_, as it seems to have been maligned somewhat in other reviews here. This was the work that most kept me coming back to this disc when I first bought it. I think it is a masterpiece, and one of Harbison's best and most important works. (Apparently I'm not alone in my admiration of the piece, because I've heard it on a number of live concerts in recent years, so it seems to be having a successful performance life.) Harbison's song cycle is by turns exciting, sensual, driving, longing, beautiful. The orchestration for the small ensemble is masterful (as Harbison's efforts at scoring always are), and Upshaw expresses all of Mirabai's complex emotions enchantingly.
The _Rake's Progress_ aria also deserves individual comment. In this engrossing example of Stravinsky's neoclassical style, Upshaw assumes Anne's air of fierce determination, and brings the disc to an absolutely thrilling climax on a concluding high C.
All of the music on this terrific CD is very accessible, and the performances are stellar. The recorded sound is very clear and immediate, as one would expect from Nonesuch. It's one of my favorite discs in my entire collection, and would probably be so for the Harbison and Stravinsky alone.

This CD Kicks Ass.......2005-10-25
You will appreciate this CD especially if you are a fan of Garbage, but it is even cool if you aren't. The first time I listened to it (and it starts out with "Only Happy When It Rains," which adds to the ass-kickery), I couldn't stop smiling because it was so damn cool. The wall-of-sound style Garbage is famous for doesn't lose anything in the translation to a string quartet. These musicians did an excellent job and it is obvious that they put a lot of work into this. Almost none of the intricate details in the original songs are lost as performed by this quartet. I'd say it's just about perfect. This CD kicks ass. I recommend it for all Garbage fans.
Not supposed to be BIG SOUNDING... it's a quartet..........2004-08-13
A reviewer wrote; "it didn't have the big sound that Garbage's songs have" and "I was expecting the compositions to be made bigger". He later went on and called it a classical album ... It isn't symphony ... it isn't supposed to sound like a symphony. It supposed to sound like a quartet. It is HUGE for a quartet. I felt like this CD totally captured the essence of Garbage's songs and Shirley's vocal characteristics and it is very big sounding for a quartet.
If your expectation goes beyond what the title of this CD is: "The STRING QUARTET Tribute To Garbage", then maybe you'll be dissapointed. But if you know what a string quartet is supposed to sound like and you like Garbage, then this CD is a masterpiece that you will enjoy listening to over & over again!!!
A star for the subject and a star for the concept..........2004-07-03
Everything else fell flat. This classical album didn't have the guts that is for sure. Also it didn't have the big sound that Garbage's songs have. I knew it wouldn't be able to summon up the vibe of the band or the truly great and difficult to describe feel of Shirley Manson's voice which instruments are unlikely to get close to. However I was expecting the compositions to be made bigger and more at the forefront. Didn't happen. The subject and idea are admirable enough but it just didn't work. Didn't really do justice to the material. Overall just a shadow of the the actual songs. Unlike alot of classical takes on various different styles of rock songs, the sound is less and the composition is underdone. This could have gone bad in alot of ways I'm just alittle surprised at the way it actually did go bad. I just didn't care for it. Like another reviewer said, there was an unimaginative tone to it. Even if they had tried to say do all the notes just the way the songs were only all instrumental and on all classically identified instruments it would have been unimaginative but still probably good. They didn't even do that. They lessened the feeling of it.
Very Beautiful.......2004-03-02
I thought the tributes were very nice, very elagent, and very unique. The violinist did such a great job on songs like "Stupid Girl" and "Breaking Up The Girl", that it made you reminice of the old, meek, and dark days of Garbage, and transform them into a beautiful masterpiece. Each song gives the listener the nostolgia of each song, with each string plucked, the listener can quickly identify the song. Definetly worth the buy, and a good CD for the collection.
Steven D. Moore Is Drunk...........2003-04-10
....And doesn't know anything about Garbage! I bought this CD and I love it! I'm a Garbage fan and have every single one of their records and this one is one of my favorites! If you are anything like me and you love Garbage, then you will love this CD and it is definately worth the money. It is exactly like their songs but played by violins and cellos. It's really beautiful and gives you a new perspective on their songs. Steven D. Moore should have listened to at least one Garbage song before he wrote his stupid review about this CD.

Good but u have to hear Subhuman!!!.......2002-01-03
Most of the Garbage B-sides and remixes are just average, so i recommend u buying the albums which are way more polished. but, if i recommend getting any of the b side singles, get the subhuman release or download it, anything!!! ...i don't know where u would find it now days.
as good as it gets.......2000-08-13
This is a great single! It has two b-sides that are awesome, Can't Seem To Make You Mine is a cover song by a 60's band, The Seeds. Shirley's voice is quite distorted, but that only makes is better! Tornado is another b-side on it. It's a funky, 80's-ish, swirly, jiggin, funny song. It has a friend of theirs screaming "c'mon, Shirl"! Hardly any lyrics on it, just like Alien Sex Fiend, Shirley only repeats one line. The Rickidy Raw R&B Mix of Special is beautiful! At first I thought it was better than the original, but it can't really come up to that.. But it's one of the best remixes I've ever heard of a song. The Trick Is To Keep Breathing is a wonderful song! The title was inspired by a book(by Janice Galloway), and the song was inspired by a friend of Shirley's. This CD is deffinately worth the money!
Hold your breath.......2000-05-01
This was somewhat of a dissapointing Garbage release. As a collector, this CD offers nothing new. The UK release of "When I Grow Up" parts 1 & 2 (Mush43CDS & Mush43CDSX) already have the previously unreleased "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" & "Tornado". The UK CD's also include "When I Grow Up - Danny Teneglia's Club Mix" which is quite good and NOT found on this CD. Of course you would have to buy 2 CD's compared to just one to get the extra track but Garbage is a great band and worth it. This CD would have been better had they of put a remix of the title track on it. It is unlikely that they will release a UK version of this like they did with every other single on Version 2.0.
Good To Drive To...........1999-05-18
I must be honest when I say I bought this on a whim, having been disappointed with Version 2.0 when compared to it's predecessor. However, I was pleasantly suprised. (And yes, this is a good CD to drive to. Just be careful when listening to "Tornado". It seems to inspire speed.) "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" has some excellent effects, especially Shirley's voice distortion. "Tornado" also capitalizes on the bands ability to go comepletely electronic, and remain real. Finally, the remix of "Special" is what really makes this single worth picking up. I dare say it far out does the original. Excellent job.
Awesome and True Single!!!!!.......1999-05-02
This is one of the most honest songs I've heard in a while. "The Trick is to Keep Breathing" has such an awesome and ethereal feel and sound to it. All of Garbage's songs are honest and true-to-life, but this one has some unknown spectacular thing going on. I would recommend buying this single to anyone!!!!

The Canadian technical metal act's terrifyingly extreme 2003 debut album. Nine tracks. Cacophonous. 2004.

A Brilliant Mindf**k.......2006-11-28
Imagine some stranger all of the sudden cuts your head open and starts tampering around with your brain. This is the musical equivalent to that. With dynamic vocals, sudden time signature and tempo changes, and riffs that could tear the skin to the bone, Ion Dissonance proves that they can play technical music well and just as great as their home country precessors (Gorguts, Cryptopsy, Martyr). If you love weird, chaotic, out of control music, pick this up.
Ion Dissonance - Forerunners of tDEP movement.......2006-03-24
Love `em or hate `em, no one can deny that The Dillinger Escape Plan made the extreme music scene quite a bit more interesting with their 1999 groundbreaking release _Calculating Infinity_. It was suddenly realized that it was indeed possible to combine the extreme technical musicianship of the likes of Cynic and Atheist with the pure dissonance and energy of grindcore, and then injected with a touch of avant-garde to create something new entirely. From their loins spawned a number just short of legions of followers - whether expanding on their sound as Psyopus did, being a total clone such as Into the Moat, or just adding crazy musicianship to metalcore in the form of Reflux.
From here it is fairly easy to guess where Ion Dissonance stands; they are yet another The Dillinger Escape Plan legionnaire ready to fill the ranks. But leaving it at that would do the band a great disservice. Blending a touch of Meshuggah and fellow Quebecers Gorguts into their sound are the main two factors that contribute to _Breathing is Irrelevant_ being more dissonant and painful, although possibly less tight than their fellows. Whether they are more musically accomplished than their pears is somewhat hard to tell when it feels as though your brain is being quickly and unprofessionally taken to pieces, but just listening to this album reveals they are the polar opposite of amateurs with their instruments.
Screaches, growls and the occasional spoken word section are contributed by the competent Gabriel McCaughry, while the talent required for what he does is debatable (no melody or hook writing is even attempted at here); he most definitely does it well. But the vocals serve less as another instrument and more as a rhythmic complement to the staccato, mind flaying rhythms of the rest of the group. I can't even begin to describe the rest of the band. They are good. Really good. As far as complexity, dissonance, energy and keeping my interest for an entire album, they are beaten by few, if any.
When Breathing Is Irrelevant clatters to the end of its seemingly endless tempo, riff, time signature, and rhythm changes, your jaw will have hit the floor multiple times, your eardrums will be scarred, and it will feel as though someone has just delivered a roundhouse kick straight to your brain. My only warning is that if techcore bands make you wretch or brings back memories of painful headaches, then I'd suggest staying away.
If I were you.......2005-12-31
I'd buy this cd. This cd is extremely intense. Very fast paced, off time signatures and in your face vocals that will beat the tar out of you. Insane riffs as well as some very quick scaling made this one of my favorite new bands for 2003.
You will not be dissapointed by this canandian 5 piece. Check out their live show if you don't believe me.

Tech-metal masterpiece!!.......2005-03-27
WOW! I've come to expect great things from any band that resides under the Willowtip Records banner, and this jaw dropping slab of mathematical tech-metal extremity from Canada's Ion Dissonance is no exception. Despite the fact that Breathing is Irrelevant is Ion Dissonance's debut album, the songwriting skills and amazing musicianship on display belie the band's relatively short existance, and youthful age.
Ion Dissonace combine the noisy, grindy chaos, that is a trademark with most Willowtip bands, with stuttering, technical polyrythmic grooves that simultaneously gets the brain working and the neck snapping, as you try to get your head around the busy, complex musical arrangements while being sucked in by the monstrous metallic grooves.
The vocals are suitably angry and deranged. Hoarse yelling, screaming and occasional spoken word sections dominate the vocal attack, but in the end it is Ion Dissonance's incredible instrumental skills, crushing grooves and ability to pen a quality metal tune without solely relying on showing off their musical skills at the expense of good songwriting, that raises Ion Dissonance to an elite level of extreme perfection.
This album should be held in the same regard as The Dillinger Escape Plan's Calculating Infinity, and like that album, Breathing Is Irrelevant is a landmark tech-metal masterpiece, that requires focused listening to pick up all the many nuances and complexities on display.
Definately one of the centrepieces of an already amazingly intense and unique history for Willowtip Records, and topped with a solid production and interesting artwork and lyrical content, Breathing Is Irrelevant is an essential purchase for those who like their metal extreme, technical and with a killer groove.
Enter the dark side and never escape....... .......2005-02-25
I was appalled to learn that I enjoy this noise. It's fAST it hits HARD, and it never repeats itself. I honestly have no idea which track I happen to be listening to at any given time. However, this is the opposite of musical chaos. Every note and whine of feedback is carefully planned and executed. If you thought Dillinger was the epitome of math metal (like I did) you would be sorely mistaken (like I was).
Your grandparents most likely wouldn't even be able to recognize this as "music". They would probably scream in horror, thinking for certain a hostile supernatural entity was making it's way into our dimension intending to deafen, terrify, and finally kill and eat them.
But YOU.. I think you'll like it just fine. Once you have listened to this CD and accepted it as music, you can never go back. Your musical tastes have been permanently warped and perverted- and you love it. Join us on the dark side, baby.
Excellent noise!.......2005-01-29
This album is so technical and has so many intricate structures that will require the listener to be able to decompose the songs for full enjoyment.
Extreme for the sake of being extreme, they are able to create complex and brutal music. Imagine a jazz band playing grindcore. But a warning: this is not an easy listening. Not a CD to take to a party. It's a CD to sit down and figure out what's going on within its 11 chaotic songs. For me, it's like reading a good book that you have to read it slowly to understand it properly. And when you finally do... oh, man...
Math Metal/Mathcore in the vein of Dillinger Escape Plan.......2004-11-16
How could anyone in their right mind say that this band has no talent? They can't! This band is EXTREMELY talnted, heavy, chaotic, and one of the best bands ever! Ion Dissonance is the latest insanely extreme band to claw there way out of the dynamic Montreal Quebec Metal scene. This is intense. Possessing the technical wizardry of The Dillinger Escape Plan and the devastating metallic grind impact of As The Sun Sets, the members of Ion Dissonance have delivered one of the heaviest albums of 2003. This is a record that ignores the listener's capacity for intensity, pummeling eardrums with violent time signatures and uncompromising vocal screams. The album's one weakness is that it's over all to quickly. This is the epitomy of aural armageddon! It could be perceived as just a blurry explosion of noise to less adventurous listeners. It's more grind than the Dillinger Escape Plan. Ion Dissonance may instill change to the musical climate. These maniacal musicians have long laid dormant in the blustery northern region, inspiring many in the underground to boast that they were clearly the future of extreme music. That lofty claim aside, these men have finally emerged with a mathematical terror aptly titled "Breathing Is Irrelevant", an album that threatens to annihilate the metallic labyrinths created by the likes of Burnt By The Sun and The Red Chord with extreme prejudice. To dub this as mere mathcore/mathmetal would be to snub the extreme immensity that Ion Dissonance are so well-trained in executing. Jazz infuced grindcore with Industrial/Thrash like guitars sound make up the amazing music that is Ion Dissonance. A must buy!
