Savath & Savalas is just one man, and he may be the States' best answer to Argentina's Juana Molina. Known as Prefuse 73 in his more electronic pursuits, Scott Herren writes, performs, and produces Savath & Savalas, and though the resulting Spanish-language somnambulism owes everything to the strain of South American fringe-folk gaining popularity in the U.S., the dedicated subtlety fueling this music is all his own. Songs cascade along in loping forward motion, as prone to lushly orchestrated decomposition ("Apnea Obstructiva," "Te Amo...Por Que Me Odias") and succulent adagio ("Faltamos Palabras," "Olhas") as they are to the simple, charismatic sense of melody that propelled S&S on 2000's Folk Songs for Trains, Trees and Honey and, even more so, 2004's Apropa't. As usual, Herren invites a few guests who make immediate sense in context. The most immediately successful of Golden Pollen's collaborators is the Swedish José González, whose vocal touches on "Estrella de Dos Caras" ("Star of Two Faces") lends the track the added sonic bloom that raises the best Savath & Savalas songs from mere Latin lullaby to transcendent, cross-cultural devotion. --Jason Kirk
Album Description
Savath and Savalas are also known for recording as Prefuse 73. "Golden Pollen" can be heard in many ways: as a tribute to the explorations of Brazilian tropicalia pioneers like Tom Ze and Caetano Veloso; as a dreamy soundscape from the post-rock world of Low and Kings Of Convenience; as a tribute to the haunting Catalan folk songs of Guillermo Scott Herren's heritage. However you take it, the record is an intoxicating gem that reveals new facets to fans familiar with Herren's previous work. An ambitious set of vocal arrangements that nod as much to avant-garde classical music as to late Brian Wilson. For fans of Jose Gonzalez, Thievery Corporation, Bebel Gilberto, Air, Caetano Veloso.
Customer Reviews:
good, but not warp good.......2007-06-28
this is a good album , but it lacks something that the rest of the savath & savalas releases have, maybe because its on anti instead of warp, maybe because Eva Puyuelo Muns isnt on the album. every warp release has had a certain signature sound, this release seems to wander more into Scotts heritage roots sound and has less or no glitch beats. i really like the album, but listeners who lean more towards the apropa't, rolls + waves e.p., and manana e.p., or Scotts prefuse/delarosa + asora sound, might wanna take a listen before purchasing. very nice and relaxing as always though.
Beautiful and Calming.......2007-06-25
This may sound cheesey, but if you listen to this album with your eyes closed, you're in for a journey. i felt like i was hovering 15 feet above the earth, flying through the trees of a great forest. i was high at the time, but i can't recommend this highly enough. oh wait, i gave it four stars. alright, i lied. there's room for more zeal.

Album Description
PULSAR's third album, issued in 1977, "Halloween" is generally considered one of the ten best symphonic albums in the world. A masterpiece of refinement, sold out for a long time and at last reissued with a wonderful 16-page booklet that includes biography, photos, words and history of the band from Lyon. Definitely indispensable for all progressive rock fans! The re-issue of "Pollen" from 1975, includes a biographical booklet with words and pictures. A year later, "The Strands Of The Future" showed us its charms in the format of hyper-sophisticated, elaborated and refined music, filled with exacerbated lyricism and romanticism. Probably as good or even better than "Halloween" ! In the early Eighties, PULSAR took the path of theatrical creation: with the director Bruno CARLUCCI, the famous quartet (Gilbert GANDIL at the guitar and bass, Victor BOSCH at the drums, Jacques ROMAN at the keyboards & Roland Richard at the flute and saxophone) adapted a short story by! Austrian novelist Peter HANDKE in 1981, "Bienvenue Au Conseil D'Administration !". The result is worth it for a lot of reasons ! With "Görlitz", PULSAR made their comeback in 1988 and played an actualised music with beautiful themes, and with the same melodical beauty and the same refinement they had shown on the four previous albums. Those are milestones of Seventies French Progressive rock !
Customer Reviews:
Pulsar is off to a clumsy, albeit promising start .......2006-05-08
This 1975 debut by French prog band Pulsar is actually quite good, and although a bit clumsy and raw at points, lays out the spacey and haunting blueprint that they would develop further on Strands of the Future (1976) and bring to crystalline perfection on Halloween (1977). The lineup at this point included Jacques Roman (Hammond organ, acoustic piano, ARP synthesizers (mostly 2600 and Pro-Soloist I think); Gilbert Gandil (electric/acoustic guitar, vocals); Philippe Roman (bass, vocals); Victor Bosch (drums) and Roland Richard (flute and ARP string ensemble). In addition to the core musicians, Carmel Williams provides a "reading" in English on Puzzle/Omen, although all of the vocal parts by Gilbert and Philippe are in French.
There are five tracks on Pollen that range in length from 3'00" to 13'05", with three in the 7-8 minute range. The basic Pulsar sound at this point includes delicate flute work, washes of string synthesizer, gloomy and heavily echoed vocals, spacey, Rick Wright-ish Hammond organ work (with the characteristically tiny modulations), and a very Pink Floyd-ish rhythm section (although admittedly, Victor Bosch is a technically superior drummer to Nick Mason). The guitar playing is also quite nice and acoustic passages balance nicely with sections that feature the electric guitar. I should note that Gilbert gets some very nice tones out his electric guitar, even when distorted. In addition to the trademark gloomy and haunting Pulsar soundscapes, there are some moderately sprightly and proggier sections (e.g. on Puzzle/Omen) along with some psychedelic, electronic experimentation and electronically altered vocal passages (e.g. parts of Le Cheval de Syllogie). Speaking of the vocals, they are OK, although they would get much better with subsequent releases.
This Musea reissue is pretty good and the liner notes provide a nicely detailed history of the band up to 1975. Interestingly, the band had existed under the Pulsar name as early as 1971 - a fact that was news to me. This album is significant in that Pulsar was finally up and running after several years of gigging throughout Europe without any recording contract to speak of. Although I ultimately prefer Strands of the Future and Halloween, Pollen has enough of the haunting and spacey Pulsar sound in place that I find it very enjoyable and can easily overlook the clumsiness. Recommended to fans of Pulsar, Meddle-era Pink Floyd, and spacey prog in general.

Friendly punk pop not found much in music today.......2000-01-20
Peach Tree is a fine punk pop cd with tons of vocal and musical hooks. The cd will remind many of the days when the Descendents rulled punk rock, and is worth noting that Bill Stevenson and Stephan Egerton produced and mixed it in the Blastin Room. This album will definatley bring joy to those that are looking for great pop and an alternative to stale alternative music.
The real pollen... is from Santa Barbara!.......1999-10-22
I remeber a band from Santa Barbara that ripped! I bought Peach Tree thinking it was them. Whoops. Don't be fooled folks. This ain't them. Thank god for Bill Stevensons producing..Oh well. Where is the Real pollen...anyway?
Peach Tree is the best album I've ever heard.......1999-08-24
Peach Tree by Pollen is the best album I have ever heard. Peach Tree is a mood making album. It can cheer you up when you need it, pump you up for a big day, or lull you to sleep. It's intense lyrics can be hard to follow unless you listen to the album endlessly, but there is something about it's mysterious words that pull you in and wrap you up in the music. Peach Tree is the only ablum I have ever been able to listen to non-stop. I never tire of it.
Just Plain SWEET........1998-11-10
This album is one of the greatest I've ever heard. This band is now one of my favorite of all time. They have two previous albums no longer available but are just as good if not better. The album is full of great lyrics and heavy hitting guitar along with great drums. Hyperventilate is by far one of the best songs on the album. This album is just plain sweet, if you like great guitars with great lyrics then this is your album.
good straightfoward power rawk!.......1998-08-08
for those of you who miss music that is just guitars and drums widdout none o dat fancy technology (which subsequently DOES have it's place, don;t get me wrong!) this is the CD to get! from the first few seconds of the song "almond coated" you are assaulted with power. driving drums, and three guys on guitars and bass who sound like they are destroying their equipment. Mind you this isn't speed metal it's...it's...elvis costello on cheap drugs! as if costello did a line of cleanser and decided to go record. ITS GOOD STUFF! simple, yet, on many of the trax i still get goosebumps up and down my back and arms.some of the songs sound out of place and awkward but since they are well placed inbetween hardrawking songs you tend not to notice. an admirable release from a VERY independant label and band...when's the next one comin out guys?

Customer Reviews:
The gentle vocal passages are the best parts (2.7 stars).......2005-10-03
I don't know their follow up albums Halloween and Strands of the future, but I wouldn't recommend this one. The instrumental passages are average fare, but admittedly the narration on the third track and the 4 gentle piano-dominated minutes on the
long last track are nice.
Underrated debut from one of the French prog greats.......2004-06-14
Pollen, the 1975 debut by this band from Lyon, France, is often overlooked in light of their next two albums, Strands of the Future and Halloween. The album was originally released on the Kingdom label, a label ran by Terry King (who was also a manager for Caravan, and Caravan themselves ended up recording for that label for a short time in the early '80s). Decca in the UK also issued this album a year later (in 1976). This album tends to be a bit more experimental and abstract than the ones to follow. The Mellotron isn't even present, instead its plastered with Solina string synths. The ARP 2600 is the other dominate keyboard used. The vocals are all in French (except for some spoken dialog, in English on "Puzzle/Omen"). It's their only album you can actually tell what language they're singing in, likely because it's bassist Phillipe Ramon (presumably the brother of keyboardist Jacques Ramon), who handled the vocals here. He left the band after this album. The album opens up with "Pulsar", which is basically an experiment in synthesizers and drums (provided by Victor Bosch). "Apaisment" is a stunning and haunting piece every much the classic Pulsar as to be found on their following albums. The piece ends with Rolland Richard giving us some flute. "Puzzle/Omen" is largely an instrumental piece, a faster piece number, with largely wordless voices, and the ARP 2600 synthesizer. The middle part changes to something more piano-dominated with female narrations (provided by Carmel Williams) in English. "Le Chevel de Syllogie" is by far the most experimental piece on the album. There is some more spoken dialog (this time in French), only the voice is electronically modified, and apparently done by one of the band members. Lots of bizarre electronic effects are also provided. "Pollen" is the last number on this album, and closest to the Pink Floyd sound, especially the use of Hammond organ. If you already enjoy Strands of the Future and Halloween, be sure to get this album as well.

Endorsed by David Pollen!.......2005-09-23
I heard about this band about 5 years ago and downloaded some of their first stuff off the web. It was great and different. I wish that web page was still here because that stuff is not for sale apparently and it has disappeared. Can they put out an early works CD with it. I don't have it anymore due to hard drive crashes and data loss. But I'd love to heard it again!

Allroy's Revenge Re-Visited.......2003-05-07
About the closest thing you'll find to resemble the style of ALL-Allroy's Revenge ........ to catchy to describe ..... the bass lines just like Alvarez's style .... just too overwhelming!!!! Actually Peach Tree is the better of the two ( My Opinion ) .... but both equal in talent / style ......... GET iT!!!!!!
Best Record of 2000.......2001-07-20
The first time I saw Pollen play was seven years ago. I fell in love with their music from the start. They are by far the best unappreciated band in the scene. If you're a fan of good emo/pop-punk/indie music, I strongly suggest you pick up this record. Nothing compares to it!!
where is the love for this band.......2000-11-22
Not even the get up kids can combine the power of emo and the guitar aggression of punk so well. These songs make you want to pogo into you collapse or to go and fall in love with someone. These songs are what ferris buelers day off is to movies, something that makes you want to do something with yourself. With lyrics that talk about girls(getting together and breaking up), being in love and being happy with what life gives you. I first heard of them when I saw them with less than jake in april of 99 and they were the show stealers. I promise you, if you like punk, emo, indie or even just rock, you will absolutely love this album.
too good for radio and MTV.......2000-08-29
Perfect blend of pop punk and power pop.....man this album rocks....Caramel is a great opener and Chanceless...words cant describe......these fellas are too good for radio and mtv airplay...hell yea!

Best pollen album!.......2003-09-08
This album is amazing, but it has some really bad recording quality. But if you're really into pollen you'll just see through it. Bob Hoag is a great songwriter and drummer on this. Pollen uses the same awesome weird music all over the place method as ALL/Descendents use today and if you put it in a blender with The Get Up Kids you'll get this amazingly talented band Pollen. So, if you've heard "Chip" and "Peachtree", but still don't own this give this one a try. The first record is really worth having if you'll enjoy this. ROCK!
