Album Description

Presenting twelve songs culled from Browne's extensive and critically acclaimed solo acoustic concerts around the world over the past few years, the disc also captures both spirited and humorous exchanges between Jackson and his audiences, making for a truly intimate listening experience. This new comp, produced by Browne and Paul Dieter, is Jackson's first live release since his 1977 multi-platinum "Running On Empty" album. It also marks the recording debut of a three decades old track, "The Birds Of St. Marks", not previously released in any form. "Solo Acoustic" reaches back to Browne's early years with "These Days" and "Take It Easy", and spans his entire career with other highlights such as "Fountain Of Sorrow", "For Everyman", "The Pretender", and "Looking East". A stirring version of "Lives In The Balance", the title track from Jackson's powerful 1986 album, will be this record's lead single.

5 out of 5 stars Where's Vol. 2??.......2007-06-01

I had the pleasure of seeing this show "live" when he dared to bring it into a really conservative hotbed in Escondido. The show was outstanding, even with the handful of annoyed conservatives grousing out loud to "Just sing" and other odd comments. Jackson Browne has been a liberal activist/performer for over 30 years now - how this escaped so many folks is some mystery.
The music is simply outstanding in its simple arrangement, and the commentary is, well, who the man is. For true fans it's great stuff. I hope volume 2 has a couple of Zevon tunes on it - as he "covered" several of these in the aftermath of the Excitable boy's untimely passing.

5 out of 5 stars up front and personal.......2007-05-29

Jackson Browne has contributed so much both as a political voice and a song writer. These acoustic gems are not all the usual songs he is most associated with. But they are definitely great examples of his sensitivity to the subject matter which he writes about and his warmth he exudes on stage with his audience. Although it would not be my first recommendation to someone who is unfamiliar with his music, it is still a very good body of work to have in your collection if you find yourself as moved as I am by his prose.

5 out of 5 stars Great to hear Jackson again.......2007-03-10

I didn't even know JB was still around! I purchased this CD and was so happy with it, I sent one off to my brother. He sings some of his famous songs and mixed in between is hilarious commentary on life, the road, the songs, women. I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Springsteen for intellectuals.......2007-02-25

Awesome CD. Brief review, excellent songs, excellent voice, excellent sound. The acoustic setup takes away most of the 'retro' feel that comes with the original recordings from which the songs derive and makes them much more contemporary sounding.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Jackson.......2007-02-15

Very nice compilation of classic Jackson Browne music in a live setting. HIs stories between songs are entertaining without being overwhelmingly "live". Any fan of Jackson will love this pure sound.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

In a jaw-dropping return to his roots, banjoist Béla Fleck led a stellar lineup (Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, Tony Rice, and Sam Bush, to name a few) through one of his finest albums. With incredible musicianship and a smidgen of Fleck's genre-hopping personality ("Polka On The Banjo"), The Bluegrass Sessions is fun, nostalgic, and inspiring. --Jason Verlinde

Amazon.com essential recording

Béla Fleck, the banjo-wizard leader of the fringe-jazz quartet the Flecktones, returns to more-bluegrass-oriented concerns with this 18-song outing, a complement to 1988's Drive and a more-traditional follow-up to 1995's fusion-leaning Tales from the Acoustic Planet. Most of these songs are instrumentals boasting Drive's core group of Sam Bush on mandolin, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Tony Rice on guitar, Jerry Douglas on Dobro, and bassist Mark Schatz; they're augmented in spots by fine guest players such as Vassar Clements, John Hartford, and the incomparable banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs. Fleck's spidery, tasteful plucking style lends originals like "Major Honker" and "Katmandu" an ever-so-slightly offbeat air, while he gives classics like Scruggs's "Foggy Mountain Special" and "Polka on the Banjo" traditional readings that wouldn't be out of place at the Opry. Flecktones fans will find much to like in Fleck's rootsy playing, and so will bluegrass purists. --Gregory McNamee

5 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorit Bela Fleck records!.......2007-01-10

I love this CD, i think it is one of the best bluegrass collections Bela has produced, with a host of different styles and artists.

4 out of 5 stars A Rarity..........2006-07-19

It's rare when a sequel exceeds the original. This album, though, exceeds the first "Acoustic Planet" effort by Fleck.

Why? Well, the playing is better technically, if you can believe that. And the energy and drive is stronger here than in Acoustic Planet 1.

You also get treated to a greater number of original compositions on this CD. I've come to appreciate this dimension of Fleck's artistic gifts even more as time has passed. While he does do a lot of variations on derivative music, his original compositions are memorable, too.

5 out of 5 stars Hair Raising.......2006-04-12

I've had this album for two years now and it still sometimes makes my hair stand on end when I listen to it and I don't even consider myself a SERIOUS bluegrass fan. Absolutely amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD!.......2006-02-25

Bela Fleck is arguably the premeir banjo player in the world and he does not disappoint on this CD. His music and that of the musicians he has gathered to play with him is superb. If your feet aren't tapping to the music in short order, then you probably have a few disconnnected nerves leading to them.

If you enjoy Americana/Bluegrass/Country, then you'll love this CD!

5 out of 5 stars If I could recommend only one CD to anyone, this would be it........2005-11-20

This is the CD that was singlehandedly responsible for revealing my long-hidden love of bluegrass music to me. I can listen to it in any season or mood and at any time of day. Each performer on the CD has moved beyond mastery of his instrument to fusion with it, and the results are incredible to hear. My favorite track on the CD is "Buffalo Nickel," which combines a gorgeous wistful melody with a constantly shifting meter and an undercurrent of satisfaction. Other favorites include the rollicking opening track of "Blue Mountain Hop," the well-titled "When Joy Kills Sorrow," the lullaby favorite "The Over Grown Waltz," the deliciously fast ending track "Major Honker"...well, who am I kidding? The entire CD is amazing. It gets my highest recommendation. Don't waver. Buy it. You'll be glad you did.

Album Description

Forty years after his death, Lead Belly's songs and style have continued to influence folk, blues, and rock artists including Neil Young, William Styron, Ben Harper, Keb' Mo, Dionne Farris, and the late Kurt Cobain (Nirvana). Between 1941 and 1947 Lead Belly recorded some of his best music in Moses Asch's tiny New York studio. The only surviving Asch masters of Lead Belly are now part of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. For the first time in almost 50 years these original acetates have been carefully remastered and newly annotated. 34 tracks, including Irene, Where Did You Sleep Last Night, In the Evening When the Sun Goes Down, and Rock Island Line. Originally released as a tribute to Lead Belly after his death in 1948, this reissue includes many out-takes and previously unreleased and alternate versions. Extensive notes include Lead Belly's own song commentary. Annotated by Jeff Place. Compiled by Jeff Place, Anthony Seeger and Kip Lornell. "The soul expressed! is full-fledged and sublime." -New England Folk Almanac

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars NOT A GOOD RECORDING.......2007-01-05

I loved the Lusty, vibrant Leadbelly on my old LP. Man, his voice and that great 12-string guitar just filled the room. But this cd remastering is a flunk, sounds like a whine in an adjoining room. This is not the first disappointing cd remastering I've bought on line. But I have some great ones as well. Seems like the poor ones are a product of low remastering standards. I'm gonna stick to buying in a store.

5 out of 5 stars The roots of quite a lot..........2003-07-21

Lead Belly is one of the best in American music - he's right up there with Woody Guthrie (if not above him, which is more than arguable) in influence and importance for the formation of 20th century music. Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter) was supposedly "discovered" and recorded in prison by John Lomax (the recordings on this CD were recorded by Moses Asch in the 1940s). He also is said to have sung his way into being pardoned (during his second term in prison after being convicted of murder) by the then governor of Texas. He never became a star, but many of his songs have been re-recorded by popular artists (probably the best-known examples are the covers of "Goodnight, Irene" by the Weavers and "Midnight Special" by Credence Clearwater Revival).

This collection is a great starting point for Lead Belly's music. It includes some of his most memorable songs: "Irene", "Grey Goose", "Cotton Fields", "Sylvie", "Rock Island Line", "Green Corn". The recording quality is great considering the age of the recordings. Included are plenty of Lead Belly playing his legendary 12-string guitar along with some a capella tracks. The CD booklet has a good biography and extensive track notes, along with quotes from Lead Belly himself about selected songs. If you're curious about Lead Belly this CD is a great introduction to his music. If you want more, this series has 2 additional excellent volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Influential.......2003-04-15

As with most pre-rock'n'roll folk and blues music deciding which Leadbelly CD to pick up is not an easy task. There are several Leadbelly compilations out there and almost all of them omit essential songs. That is why, taking into consideration the importance of this man's music, I suggest giving the old visa card a little work-out and springing for both this and Bourgeois Blues: Leadbelly Legacy, Vol. 2.

Leadbelly is among the top three most influential musicains of the 20th Century. A distinction he shares with Son House and Robert Johnson (Son House: The Original Delta Blues and The Complete Robert Johnson are both essential cds). The seeds that Mr. Ledbetter planted when he recorded his music went on to sprout plants in the fields of popular music from (probably) every country on earth. You know the story: From blues came rock'n'roll and jazz.

A friend once said to me, "Good artists borrow ideas, great artists steal them." This is particularly true concerning the relationship between Leadbelly and the other Led. Don't get me wrong. Zeppelin were pioneering geniuses in their own right. But little did I know that the Led Zeppelin records that I blasted full volume deep into my profoundly stoned highschool cranium were really written in large part by dirt poor black men way before World War Two. The song 'Black Betty' by Ram Jam which recently enjoyed some nostalgic exposure through the Blow Soundtrack (a fine collection) was originally a Leadbelly tune. And it may well have been Leadbelly's ghost that killed John Bonham and Hendrix and Morrison and Joplin and Brian Jones, seeking revenge for royalties never paid. Cobain, too.

5 out of 5 stars lead.......2003-03-04

This is an essential album to any collection. Its a bit hard to listen to stait through though.

5 out of 5 stars leadbelly is the daddy mac.......2002-08-06

absolutely amazing. especially the haunting "where did you sleep last night?", the field holler "pick a bale o cotton", Midnight Special, Leaving Blues, the funky Rock Island Line an the saddest song ever "Childrens blues" about his mother dying. if you dig Leadbelly check out Missippi John Hurt, Blind Boy Fuller,Sleepy John Estes, Reverend Gary Davies and early Rory Gallagher.

By turns mournful and mystical, these 14 Celtic lullabies performed by musicians from around the world give voice to the experience of mother and child in haunting, evocative folk songs. "More often than not," veteran Irish singer Nóirín Ní Riain writes in the liner notes, "a true lullaby is more indicative of the mental state of the mother than of her wish to lull her child to sleep, and so often her frustrations find a legitimate voice through song." Celtic Twilight 3: Lullabies will become a bedtime favorite, both for its lulling pull to sleep for baby and the numinous, soothing tones of old-country songs for parents winding down at the end of the day. --Stefanie Durbin

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Lullabies for Baby and for MOM!.......2007-05-31

This Audio CD is a wonderful gift for anyone who is expecting, it soothes mom as well as baby. I love this CD and play it often at night when I am winding down.

5 out of 5 stars Received unexpectedly and love it!.......2007-05-19

I received this as a gift from one of the artists. I am the "Christina" of track 6 - Alasdair Fraser was a friend of the family and wrote tunes for each of us as a thank you for hosting him. My piece was a slow air/waltz, but I never heard it performed until I received a copy of this CD from him.

Not only am I thrilled with the beautiful arrangement of "my" song, I love the other songs on the album as well. The music is wonderfully relaxing, and I look forward to playing it for my children to introduce them to Celtic music. I'm still a Gaelic singer, too...:)

5 out of 5 stars Great shower gift for expecting moms!.......2007-03-05

I bought this first Celtic Twilight, Vol. 3: Lullabies CD right after I had my first baby. It has such beautiful music, and is not some of the sickly sweet lullaby music that you get on so many other CDs.

It has been a wonderful ritual that we have before we go to bed so that my son can settle down and go to sleep. By track 2, he's usually snoring! I'm buying another copy of the same CD for my second baby so that she can have the same soothing sounds to drift off to sleep.

I would highly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Twilight Lullabies.......2007-01-15

This is a wonderful album. As is often the case with lullabies, they seem more for the pleasure of adults than for children. My grandchildren find this album quite soothing as do their parents. We all listen to the songs over and over and think it is very relaxing album.

5 out of 5 stars Love It, So Beautiful, Angelic Lullabies.......2006-12-02

I absolutely love this CD. It reminds me of songs my Irish grandmother would sing to me.
Ethereal voices sing Irish lullabies. The music is soft, serene and intensely rich. I believe this music will work for all ages from a newborn to 100+.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smoothe Music.......2006-07-10

This is one of my favorite albums. The music is, in my opinion, excellently chosen. Some compilation CDs have awkward transitions between artists. On this album, the songs are arranged in a very pleasing order. You can listen and appreciate the different styles of the artists without feeling like you are getting pulled in different directions. The best way I can describe it is to write that it is like reading an excellently chosen book of short stories.

This album is fabulous for artistic inspiration. It is beautiful without being imposing. As a teacher of English, I often look for music that will inspire my students to write without distracting them. For the past four years, this CD has been one that my students have enjoyed listening to while they work.

3 out of 5 stars Half good, half sleepers.......2004-03-02

If anything, this CD brings you up to date with who's who in the acoustic fingerstyle scene. I love the fingerstyle technique, but didn't know much about the current talent. Now I see these names all of the time in guitar magazines, and I actually can associate music with the face. So on an informative level, this CD does the job well.

However, the buffet factor did affect my opinion of the overall music: more songs means more filler. While I find half of the collection to be great, I felt pretty underwhelmed by the rest of it. There are no excruciatingly bad moments to speak of. The low points are just plain boring. And almost everyone here is trying their absolute best to ape the Michael Hedges approach. A find that admirable since I like Michael Hedges, but it's tiring all the same.

My favorite musicians here are probably Don Ross, Pat Kirtley, and possibly D.R. Auten. Ross is very much a disciple of Hedges, but his music remains compositionally interesting like his source. Both songs show off a good melody alongside his baffling technique. It really does sound like he has three hands. Pat Kirtley has a more subtle approach to the guitar. His Kentucky-Americana roots make for two very warm, laid-back tunes. He may not be flashy, but he has style. I like D.R. Auten's loose-jazz composition "Angela." That's definitely a high point on the CD for me as well.

When I saw Muriel Anderson perform, my jaw might have hit the floor. I can't remember. But she was completely out of this world. And I almost didn't go to see her play because the two songs she contributed to this CD put me to sleep. To B Or Not To B sounds identical to the Chet Atkins performance, and It Never Gets Easier is just as dry. Without a doubt I recommend you catch her live. As far as her recordings go, I have yet to hear something killer.

All of the other guitarists just sound like one another. While their technique is impressive and the music is pleasant, it's all too much of the same. Hopefully these other artists will grow and develop as their careers progress.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic!!!.......2003-11-30

A friend of mine bought this album a while ago and played it for me. I am a fan of Leo Kottke and so thought he was the ultimate in fingerstyle. I soon realized that he has competitors. This album is one of the finest I have encountered and will long be one of my favorites. It has inspired me to become more proficient at the guitar. Check out the tracks, To B or Not To B, Crow, Lunar Eclipse, The First Ride. The rest of the album is none-the-less engaging. Highly Recommended!!! Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Enjoyable Acoustic Entertainment.......2003-02-11

I heard this CD being played as background music to my daughter's guitar recital...as the audience was arriving for the concert. It captivated my wife and I to the point that I searched everywhere I could to obtain a copy. The music instructor of the night could not recall which CD he utilized (he apparently has quite a variety in his collection). I purchased six acoustic CDs in search of this one. AM I GLAD I FINALLY FOUND THIS ONE AT AMAZON.com! What a great mix of relaxing and diverse acoustic tunes. I am a big "Acoustic Alchemy" band fan, but this is my all-time favorite CD. And I really appreciate Amazon.com's extra effort in their quality packaging of these products. I haven't had a CD or DVD breakage yet! And the time frame from ordering to arrival is very impressive.

5 out of 5 stars a true sampling of talent and style.......2002-04-16

I have a love for guitar music of all kinds. Be it jazz, rock, blues, acoustic or other. But more and more I find myself listening to lots of acoustic guitar, the warm tones evoke moods and emotions like few other instruments can. In the hands of these accomplished artists, the playing is raised to new heights. This is a great CD for driving, for quiet nights home alone, or with a special someone. Highly recommended for those who are just beginning to explore the genre as well as those who already enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Pinetop at Antones, Naturally the Best.......2001-07-14

I just returned from a live performance by the "living legend" of Boogie Woogie. Prior to my trip from San Antonio to Antones blues clup in Austin to See Mr Perkins perform, I gave this CD a listen. This recording truly captures the ambiance of the Austin blues club that has been the "Fort Apache" of the blues south of Chicago. Pinetops personable performance on the recording is exactly the way it is if you were standing next to the piano (as I was). "Big fat Mama" tends to stand out as my favorite boogie woogie tunes done by Mr. P, though his others such as "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie" with it's halts in the progression by Pinetop instructing "Stop!, dont you turn a page" This performance was recorded when Pinetop was 86 years old. He is 88 now and still rocks those keys as if he were 20. I couldn't help but tell Mr P "Pinetop, you the Best!"

Album Description

The mesmerizing power and beauty of acoustic guitar is amply displayed on Acoustic Heart 2 (released on Shanachie Entertainment June 29, 2004), a collection of extraordinary performances by such acoustic guitar masters as Peter White, Earl Klugh, Alex de Grassi, Artie Traum and many others. A surprising highlight is Pat Metheny's version of the Norah Jones hit "Don't Know Why." Metheny, who is known as a wizard of electric guitar, turns in a subtle, moving version of one of the past year's biggest hits. Following the successful approach of the previous volume of Acoustic Heart, this new compilation delivers plenty of passion and romantic feeling amidst an often-dazzling display technique. As noted by celebrated acoustic guitarist Artie Traum, who compiled the album along with Jeff Heiman, the tracks often have an almost orchestral quality--even though most of them feature only solo acoustic guitar.

The list of artists featured on Acoustic Heart 2 is a veritable "who's who" of acoustic guitar masters. It also demonstrates the universality of the instrument; represented on Acoustic Heart 2 are artists from Hawaii, Algeria, England, France and America, reflecting the reality that impressive acoustic guitar music is being made on every continent and has been for some time. Interestingly, the artists on Acoustic Heart 2 have made their names in a variety of genres--jazz, world, new age, folk and rock music. Laurence Juber, for instance, first made his mark as a member of Paul McCartney and Wings. Pat Metheny, an electric guitar icon in the fusion jazz world, had never recorded with acoustic guitar until he made the album that contains "Don't Know Why" last year. Artie Traum along with his brother Happy, has been a staple of the folk and singer/songwriter circuit for years. He also has had success in the contemporary jazz world, scoring a #l contemporary jazz radio hit in l994. Alex de Grassi came to prominence in the first wave of "new age" music, one of a handful! of guitarists who created a whole new style for acoustic guitar.

There is nothing like the pure sound of an acoustic guitar. This is simple, clear, honest and real strumming and picking. You get lost in the vibrations of those strings. Let your imagination take wing!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic album.......2007-05-12

This is a great album. While a little heavier than Zakk Wylde's "Book of Shadows", this certainly can be considered his idea of "SAP" or "Jar of Flies". This is a great record with some mellow stuff as well as some heavier stuff. A must have for an Zakk Wylde fan.

2 out of 5 stars Weak album from a great band.......2007-04-02

I don't mind athat the album is soft I just mind that it's not very good. Zakk isn't the best guy to be singing slower songs anyways, great guitarist but a crappy voice. I love other albums from BLS but this one was extremely disappointing. Crazy or High is one of their best songs ever and there's a few other decent ones but overall very boring album.

5 out of 5 stars A Great CD with a Bad title!!!.......2007-01-14

This Zakk's best work ever. YES, you read that correctly. The songs here are well thought out, both structuraly and lyrically. It's nothing other BLS albums where the songs are 3 minutes long and Zakk and Craig just pound there way thru them. Zakk sings with inflection and emotion that actually makes you feel the mood of the tunes. The CD is best listened to with a clear mind, not while detoxing from the night before!!!

5 out of 5 stars Despite The 'Hangover' Part This Album Rocks..........2006-06-18

When i say despite the hangover part i dont mean it as a bad thing, in fact your morel ikely to listen to this with a couple of beers and a quite night in front of the pc or peacefully drinking booze by yourself with a cd player at the beach on the cliffy rock areas. Great album, best iv heard from wylde yet (im a sucker for his acoustic stuff). Buy it now and grab a six pack and find a good comfortable stone to rest yer backend on for a few hours...

All songs 10/5 :D

5 out of 5 stars This one hooked me.......2006-01-14

I was familiar with Zakk from Ozzy. But never really gave him a real listen unitl " Hangover Music". Boom - right off the bat the first track (Crazy or High) got me. His voice is unique (being nice), but works with the dynamics of his music. I was expecting a harder edge even with the CD's title. But it works and is put together nicely. "House of Doom" & "Damage is Done" are highlights. Very solid disk. Got me to go back and download his earlier stuff which is amazing. You get what you get, and I like that. No pretense, just flat out rock....

4 out of 5 stars Good Starter!.......2004-07-30

This CD isn't the best anything. It's just a good starter cd for the new Blues listener, and a good listen for the more experienced. So I'll rate it a good. It probably deserves three stars but I'm a sucker for slide guitar so I gave it four.

4 out of 5 stars Another good sampler.......2003-12-07

This is another fine entry in Rhino's lengthy Blues Masters series. It isn't the definitive word on slide guitar blues, of course, or on any of the artists represented, but as a sampler it works very well, featuring a lesser-known (but very good) rendition of "Dust My Broom" by Elmore James, and well-chosen cuts by Muddy Waters, J.B. Hutto (the tough boogie "Too Much Alcohol"), and Robert Nighthawk (a superb medley of two of his best songs, "Anna Lee" and "Sweet Black Angel").

The compilers at Rhino have included the Allman Brothers' version of Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues" rather than the original, "Shake Your Moneymaker" by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and Canned Heat's take on "Rollin' And Tumblin'"...I would probably have gone with McTell's own "Mama T'Ain't Long Fo' Day", which is one of the most beautiful acoustic slide guitar blues tunes you'll ever hear, but that's just me.

Robert Johnson is missing, and Son House is, too, but the compilers try to make amends by including some lesser-known tracks which should appeal to the experienced blues fan, like James Williamson's "Homesick's Shuffle", Babe Turner's "I Am The Black Ace", Earl Hooker's "If You Ever Seen A One-Eyed Woman Cry", the harsh "Treat Me The Way You Do" by Joe Carter, and a rare opportunity to hear Chuck Berry wielding the slide on the odd instrumental "Deep Feeling". And the awesome Blind Willie Johnson is here as well, performing the eerie "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground".

Very good. But its companion volume, Blues Masters Vol. 18, is actually even better.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......1998-10-17

This is must buy for any fan slide guitar. From beginning to end, from Elmore James to Johnny Winter, it's non-stop blues. You'll find yourself hitting the repeat button on the CD player, so you can hear the great blues slide guitar again.
