Interest in the Cornells' personnel almost capsizes the musical legacy of this Los Angeles instrumental combo. Peter Lewis (later to shine in Moby Grape) was the son of actress Loretta Young; Jim O'Keefe's dad was actor Dennis O'Keefe; Bob Linkletter was the son of Art Linkletter; and Charlie Correll's dad, Charles Correll, starred on the Amos 'n' Andy radio show. Hollywood lineage aside, the Cornells held their own with anyone in Smogtown's early-'60s Kowabunga Krew. Lewis's razor-sharp lead slices meaty chunks from the Wailers' "Shanghaied." "Beachbound" reveals dark Duane Eddy roots under all that bleached blond hair. And O'Keefe's tenor sax adds paprika to the sandy stew, making "Stompin' After Five" sound like something from a Texas roadhouse. --Jud Cost

Product Description
Peter Lewis would later end up in Moby Grape, the rest of the Cornells would go on to found a prestigious college in upstate New York. But at this particular moment in time, they'd joined forces to play spiffy surf music while wearing equally spiffy surfin' jackets & sweaters. A sunken treasure liberated from Davy Jones' Locker by the fearless frogmen at Sundazed. Includes three bonus tracks, 'Mama's Little Baby', 'Wak-A-Cha', & 'Surf Fever'. Sundazed. 1995.

3 out of 5 stars My 1,000th Review.......2005-08-29

The Cornells were a surf group that was comprised of sons of Hollywood celebrities. Guitarist Peter Lewis later was a member of the legendary Moby Grape. The Cornells recorded one ultra-rare album and four rare singles. All their released tracks are included on this CD. It is pretty average surf music, but surf music fans will appreciate the chance to hear these rare recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Surfin' at Malibu, grunion runs, full moonshine on waves...........1999-05-13

Instantly took me back to those hot summer days of the sixties when my biggest worry wasn't how I'd look in a bikini, but if the RIGHT guy would notice me. Nostalgia and adventure packed into a little CD...remember when the Cornell's played at "Mother's" in Santa Monica? And appeared on "I've Got a Secret" with Garry Moore....and flew to New York to do the Les Crane show? This CD brings back all the memories of being a teen ager in the 60's and makes me wonder why we didn't see more of this group. Instrumentally, they were far superior to most of the beach bands and genetically, as the sons of celebrities, they had a "leg up" in the business. Now, perhaps a new generation can give them the recognition they so richly deserve, if they can keep the CD out of the hands of their parent and grandparents. Tom Crumplar, Pete Lewis, Jim O'Keefe, Charlie Correll and the late Bob Linkletter were five of the greated surf musicians ever.
