How do you drum up interest in a Jerry Lee Lewis record, since the Ferriday Fireball is 71 and hasn't put out an album since 1996? First, you pair him with 22 of the biggest stars of rock (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards), country (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard), and blues (Buddy Guy, B.B. King), to show how he put his stamp on nearly every genre. Then, you hire the dean of music chroniclers, Peter Guralnick, to give the liner notes heft. And--oh, yes, you also make sure the piano-pounding pioneer displays the best finger form he's shown in 25 years. Throughout, the Killer crows, struts, and self-mythologizes with the brio of youth, and who could resist him? At times, one may question the wisdom of turning an obvious guitar tune (Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll") into a piano-dominated performance, just as it seems odd to not make the best use of such guests as Toby Keith or Delaney Bramlett. But Lewis never yields the throne for a second, even surrounded by the likes of Robbie Robertson, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton. For that reason, most of these aren't true duets--the star instrumentalists take their solos, and the harmonies of some of the most legendary vocalists (Don Henley, Little Richard) stay too far in the background. But when things really work--as they do with Bruce Springsteen (the rave-up "Pink Cadillac"), Neil Young (a crackling rendition of "You Don't Have To Go"), Kid Rock (an even blacker "Honky Tonk Woman"), George Jones (the novelty-framed "Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age"), and Kris Kristofferson (an especially poignant take on "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33"), the rock of ages cleaves for thee and me. Last Man Standing refers to the famous cover of Million Dollar Quartet, on which he's pictured with fellow Sun artists Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, all now jamming in the great beyond. Yet in a spoken-word reprise at the end of the Kristofferson song--"From the rocking of the cradle / To the rolling of the hearse / The going up was worth the coming down"--the Last Man seems to suggest his own fine epitaph. Man, that just blew my mind!.......2007-07-01

About 50 years ago, Sun Records was at the forefront of the beginning of rock and roll, with performers like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. The title of this CD refers to the fact that Jerry Lee Lewis is "the last man standing" among these Sun Records legends, which is pretty amazing when you consider that he probably led the wildest life of all of them. For this album, the 70something year old Killer performs duets with a bunch of other record stars. "Duets" is not quite an accurate description, though, since some guests just perform instruments and some guests sing what amounts to background vocals. But the real star here is of course Jerry Lee himself, who proves that he can still sing and pump the piano better than just about anybody. He handles rock, country and blues songs equally well. The duet partners were probably added to make the album more commercial, but they do manage to add something to the mix, since it gives the album more variety. I suspect that their presence also pushed Jerry Lee to do his best, since he wouldn't want to be outshined on his own album. The Killer can frequently be heard joking around with them, which adds to the fun of the album. This is probably the greatest rock and roll album every recorded by a senior citizen, and it puts to rest the lie that rock music is strictly for young people.

It's about time!.......2007-05-28

Jerry Lee is one of the last surviving rock and roll pioneers and it is about time he rec'd some quality attention. I've seen him live, and man, oh, man, is he for real. The production on this project is good, the performances are good, the packaging is good, the song selection is good; this will definitely be a project that will add to his legacy. As with all of us, Father Time is catching up with the Killer, and my personal wish is that whoever was responsible for this project would have done it 10-15 years ago. It seems so many of the early rock and roll pioneers die without really having quality documentation (there is a good special featuring Carl Perkins, which shamefully had to be made in England because he was apparently appreciated more there, and of course Chuck Berry's "Hail, Hail, Rock and Rock" should be in every music lover's home). Now if we could only get new projects from Chuck Berry, or Little Richard, or Fats Domino!

Wonderful CD.......2007-05-06

This is a great CD if you like the boogie woogie style paino. So many wonderful voices have paired up with Jerry for this one, you can't help but like some of the songs, and fortunately I liked them all. Perhaps my favorite is he with B.B. King--a wonderful piece. This is not a perfectly orchestrated CD, and the "soul" comes through.

Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

It wasn't long ago that people were bemoaning a paucity of visible male jazz singers. Now, with the emergence of slick young vocalists like Michael Buble and Jamie Cullum and the continued success of more mature artists like Kurt Elling, Kevin Mahogany, and Harry Connick, Jr., the field is getting a bit crowded. But there's still a shortage of men who have the depth and individual style of female counterparts including Diana Krall, Karrin Allyson, and Dianne Reeves. With his second album, 30-year-old Tony DeSare, yet another proficient Sinatra imitator, will likely gain listeners with his easy-swinging vocals and cocktail-smooth piano playing, spiked as it is with Erroll Garner effects. But for all its surface appeal, Last First Kiss fails to hold interest. A mix of standards by the likes of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, pop tunes by Prince and Carole King and originals by DeSare, the album has a kind of American Idol-does-jazz feel. It's never lacking in energy or enthusiasm but rarely leaves you feeling any of it matters. --Lloyd Sachs

A truly surprising listen........2007-05-09

As the labels try to get a new handle on the adult market, it's hard to be an up and coming pianist/crooner today.
Trying to break the current mold, DeSare veers from the current pack, also trying to break out, but ditching the classics and moving recent works into more of an MOR bag, whether covering Carole King, King Cole or Prince. Keeping the music out of elevators and dentist's offices,along with his own compositions, ( where he pleasantly showcases his knack for both classic jazz standard-influenced songcraft, as on the poignant "I'll Never Have Enough of You," as well as more contemporary rock-influenced writing ) , DeSare interprets Prince's "Kiss," Carole King's "I Feel The Earth Move" and the little-known Sammy Cahn/Jimmy Van Heusen "Come On Strong."
DeSare has a personality and puts it to good use, the defining thing that could separate him from the pack and let him make his move. He's got that thing soccer moms at Starbucks could relate to while impatiently waiting on her latte.
He is supported by a stellar backing enseble including bassist and co-writer Mike Lee, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, and tenor saxophonist Harry Allen.

Finally...Jaw-Dropping Talent!!!.......2007-04-29

I recently had the privilege of seeing Tony DeSare perform in the famed Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. This is where Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall got their big breaks. I can sum up the show with one word...wow. The entire audience felt the same. The applause and standing ovations from the typically reserved regulars showed deep appreciation for his extraordinary talent. Mr. DeSare's incredible delivery of standards and stellar originals seemingly teleports the listener to a warm, comfortable place in a simpler time. Resisting is futile as flavorful, beautiful tones bring a smile to the soul. Integral in his ability to deliver such an experience is his disarmingly pure charisma. The highly critical New York Times music reviewer Steven Holden seemed to agree; he printed a near rave review of the show in March. Tony DeSare is obviously destined for stardom. This is one very special human being. Last First Kiss and Want You are juicy, simply spectacular 'must have' albums. Give them as gifts and you'll hear 'thanks again- I love that guy' over and over. At least that's what I keep hearing.

This is just what you need on a day where nothing seems to be going right. Listening to Tony at work makes even the work day go by quicker! I love him.

Swingin', Sultry and Romantic.......2007-03-05

DeSare emits a steamy and sexy vibe other singers of his genre have failed to generate. His voice is a fusion of the warm tones of Sinatra, the sensuality of early Connick and his own jazz style. The thing that sets him apart from the rest of the `Rat Pack' is his ability to write songs that blend seamlessly into his genre. To top it off, he is an amazing pianist whose skills mystify many of the other crooners on the charts today. Even vocalists who originated this contemporary jazz style were neither composers nor instrumentalists.

"Kiss" stands out as an album favorite. It is not only is it a great song, but it is a testament to the artist's ability to take a song that has been done well in the past and make it even better by giving it his own sensual twist. His heart-felt portrayal of his music distinguishes him from the "cheesy" stigma of the jazz vocalist. `Last First Kiss' is wonderful for dinner parties, a romantic evening or just for the pure joy of listening to an artist with genuine talent.

Sinatra reincarnated.......2007-02-23

I heard about Tony on NPR recently. I ordered his 2 albums for my dad's birthday -- he loves the old crooners. I also ordered his latest album for myself because his is such a nice departure from much of the pop music mush these days. After my initial listen: wow, this guy gets it. He sings in the old crooner style, but not in a contrived way. You can tell he's still his own man. I like that he's chosen less mainstream songs from the past.

Last Man Standing If you are a Killer fan like me this is a must have LIVE dvd. Jerry Lee at 71 still shows he is the master of Boogie Woogie piano. He sings 28 live songs with a variety of stars from Kid Rock to Tom Jones through Willie Nelson and John Fogerty plus others. Jerry Lee outshines them all and the respect they have for him is obvious to see. Buy this DVD it is a truly great show you will enjoy

Jerry will always be the legend and the Killer. He is truly the last man standing.
I really enjoyed audio CD that comes in this package. Songs are live cuts from recent performances. Jerry's version of Lucille is just great. I have always enjoyed his take on this song and have been blasting this recent version in my car and at home.

About DVD...I must admit that my favorite Jerry was when he was in his 40s and 50s.
He had the blues, the country and the rocknroll. He had the heartache to portray it in his songs and he still had the fire to give it some hell on the piano. This DVD is for the fans - people who love JLL, who follow him, who respect him and who admire him. I think it was a great effort to prove the point of the Last Man Standing, but at the same time when I finished watching this DVD i had a bit of a nostalgic feeling not willing to admit that the years are going by...

this guy should have retired years ago, as he has consistently phoned in his live shows and studio albums for the past, oh, 35 years or so. there's no conviction here whatsoever, and his vocals are nothing but a bunch of hillbily warbling. if you must own one of his live albums, get the starclub cd, and skip this bland performance.

A Killer Show.......2007-04-20

After buying the stand alone DVD, I'd purchased a copy of this CD/DVD Last Man Standing combo release in hopes that it would include some of the soundtrack, instead of another release of old hits. I got lucky! It was 1991 when I first heard this and musically what was mostly being played in my household at the time was good ole Punk music. A lot of Dead Kennedy's and stuff.
Someone randomly threw this album on and I was instantly overcome with intense emotion. A Love at first sight type of thing. Or at first listen. You get the picture. Anyway,
I was swept away.
It's dark and beautiful. Dreamy and haunting. Andrew Eldritch has the voice of a God. If you could marry a voice this is the voice I would marry.

The music is very dramatic and powerful.
The guitarist blows me away, Wayne Hussey, Oh my God he's real, real good.

My favorite songs - Marian, Nine while nine, Possession, No time to cry, Black planet and Some kind of Stranger, which is by the way my favorite love song. Broken, tragic every word hurts.

This is not just my favorite Sisters album but it is my favorite album of all time. I need it.

First and Last and Always.......2006-11-19

FLA is good, but only good. It shows flashes of the brilliance that would be Floodland, glimpses of the power and polish that was to come flow in and out like the tide. FLA is not Floodland, and I can only imagine what led from FLA to Floodland. Earth quake, LSD, or emergence of pure genius, I do not know, but there is only one Floodland and this isn't it.

I have for a long time considered this Sisters of Mercy to be best. I never tire of listening to it. If anyone needs an intro to the Sisters then try this one! It is amazing!

My Personal Favorite.......2005-06-21

I bought FALAA after I had bought Floodland, and I was suprised when the former was so noticeably different from the latter. This is, in my opinion, the Sisters of Mercy at the top of their form; the album is an absolute treat.

The most striking thing about FALAA is its masterful consistency- this is a testament to what an album should sound like in execution. The songs stand apart well enough to be memorable as individual pieces but are cohesive enough to make the whole satisfying and coherent.

And the songs themselves are all fantastic. In a true display of the original band's talent and skill, they manage to make dreary, brooding lyrical subjects into beautiful pop songs. "Marian [Version]" is a hauntingly immaculate number that can be described as "just plain pretty". It also has one of Eldritch's best vocal performances- he drops his voice to a soft, melodic baritone and croons (or as close to crooning as he's gotten) out the lyrics. In the gorgeously minimal "Nine While Nine" he laments over a love gone sour to a piano tune. "Some Kind Of Stranger" is among the most haunting of the bunch, as Eldritch gradually digresses into a desperate wail as the song moves along. Fast and catchy dance tunes like "Walk Away", "Rock and a Hard Place" and "Logic" inject movement and energy when needed.

The album's title track, and one of my favorites, shows just how excellent a guitarist the musically-underrated Wayne Hussey is. The whole album does. His guitar work is one of the key ingredients into making this such a fantastic listen. His focus isn't on the mindless execution of three chords, but on structure and melody.

This is an example of soild, well-structured pop brilliance. There's not a single track that necessitates skipping over- they're all damn good. This is a true album, not just a collection of bare-bones studio drudgery punctuated by singles. It works best as a whole, and that's how it should be listend to. Dreary? A tad. Brooding? Sure. Overly dramatic? Of course. But that's why this album is a true gem- the fact that it can be all those things and still be beautiful, original and satisfying. An absolute must.

Better then than now.......2004-06-01

When this album came out in the US in 1985, it seemed really interesting to me. The mood...Andrew Eldritch keeps the accelerator going up and down, always feels like the band has a terrific pent-up energy that is never released. Perfect innovation in a time when rock music was going either to simple basics or to wretched excess. This is dark without drone. It was appealing to a college student who didn't want any more sappy love music or "Slow Ride." I cannot highlight one song over another; the theme is consistent.

Years later, I heard Fields of the Nephilim for the first time. Yes, in the earlier stuff there's some striking imitation. If you listen to "Laura," which includes pre-FALAA tunes from the Neph, then pick up "Dawnrazor," the Sisters absorption becomes obvious.

This is not to disparage Fields of the Nephilim. In my view, the Sisters of Mercy dissolved into nothing more than Eldritch's playtoy due to incessant lineup changes. The Neph hung on a little longer and took that gothic-inspired theme much farther, before exhausting it and piddling off into obscurity. "Nephilim" and "Elizium" are more enduring works, not matching Eldritch's lyrical poetry but surpassing the Sisters in musical creativity and studio polish. Today, these recordings are a lot more enjoyable to listen to than anything the Sisters put up. I don't believe the Neph would have amounted to anything, though, without a serious shove from "First and Last and Always."

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

personly i love this band the lyircs are awsome,the singing is great(love screamo!!!),the guitars,drums etc. ROCK!!!! so whats not to like? i think nothing when i first got this cd i liked this band alot from what music i had heard, now i love them....so if you like screamo (they really dont scream that much) if you like that kind of music like i do then you should get this cd or the other one i heard it was good to....if not then what can i say you suck?

1-Soliloquy: Intro. Pretty good intro considering I hate intros.
2-The One Armed Boxer Vs. The Flying Guillotine: I love this song. It's really a great way to kick off the CD, very fast paced song that caught my attention.
3-Note To Self: This isn't my favorite song, but it's probably one of their most well known. It's definitely not the best off the album but I love Sonny's vocals on it. Once I listen to it I love it, but compared to the rest of the album it's not very good, which is sort of unfair since it's still a good song.
4-I liked you better when you were naked on the internet: This is my favorite song, a lot of people don't like it and think it's boring, but I just love listening to Sonny's voice without the distraction of instruments and screaming. Yes those things are awesome, but Sonny's voice is more amazing. & It's a good song lyrically wise too, but is a short song. (Under two minutes.)
5-Featuring Some Of Your Favorite Words: A great song, another one of my favorites. (That's not saying too much since I love every single song on this album because they're all great.)This has a bit more instruments than some people might like, but not enough to ruin the song or anything. My favorite line is about 2 minutes into the song when Sonny goes, "No I can't breathe".
6-Emily: This is an amazingly sweet song. Even better; it's acoustic. Sonny's vocal job is amazing. It might seem like I overuse that word, but Sonny is a really really really great singer and he deserves credit. :) The only bad thing about this song is its length. I play it over-and-over because it's too short, only 2:39 and it goes by fast when you get caught up in the lyrics. This is my favorite of my favorites. It's short and sweet. Really sweet.
7-Secrets Don't Make Friends: It's a great song, but sort of disappointing after hearing Emily right before it. If a different artist had this song, it'd probably be considered their best, but this is From First To Last we're talking about! :)
8-Populace In Two: It starts out sort of slow, but picks its pace up a bit. I know a lot of people sort of dislike this song, because it's a bit slow, but it's got some lines that stick in your head. It's got a bit of an instrumental in it, but it's still a good instrumental.
9-Kiss Me, I'm contagious: The lyrics make it an ideal scene song, (Bang, Bang, Guns go bang) but this came out before the scene got really huge. It's still a pretty decent song.
10-Minuet: A minute long acoustic instrumental, I usually hate instrumentals, but I actually like this one a lot.
11-Ride The Wings Of Pestilence: A song about murder. What could feed and tame teen angst any better? Even if murder isn't your scene (no pun intended) it's a great song, I love it a lot, even when I'm not mad, so it's a great song you can enjoy anytime. Again, Sonny does some great vocals.
12: Hidden Track: This song is great J they're making fun of rap/hip hop in it, & it's a really great song. Another one of my favorites, although it disappoints me that Sonny didn't do the rap, it doesn't ruin the song though. "Hiding cameras in your bedroom, girl I know what you've done!"

Overall this is a great album the only one I listen to anymore. I've only had it for a month, but I haven't listened to any other CD since. This CD doesn't get old, and is just an amazing CD.

Great Album.......2006-07-24

After adding 15 year old Sonny Moore as their lead singer, From First To Last headed to the studios to release their debut full length. The album is a great emo/post-hardcore album. It has it's strong points and has very few weak points. I would have to say though, this album is not as good as their second full length Heroine, which has more of an edge. Anyway, the highlights on this one are The One Armed Boxer vs. The Flying Gullitine, Note To Self, I Liked You Better Before You Were Naked On The Internet (one of the slower songs on the album along with Emily), Emily (which is probably one of my top 3 favorites on this album), and Ride The Wings of Pestilence. Overall, for fans of Senses Fail and other screamo bands, you may like this, although it's mostly a harder version of emo, and there isn't a whole lot of screaming. This album has great singing drumming and song writing. You won't be disapointed.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Deviating from post hardcore.......2007-07-15

I became an instant FFTL fan upon hearing "Secret's dont Make Friends" and "Ride the Wing's of Pestilence". The songs were melodic with screams thrown in at all the right times. A great example of what the post hardcore scene is supposed to sound like. When I went out and bought "Heroine" I was excited to hear how they had progressed since "Dear Diary". The music is bearable but it was nothing that I had expected or really wanted. Songs like Mothersound were OK but lacked the intensity and were easily forgotten in my MP3 player. It seems that they had completely deviated from the post hardcore sound apparent in "Dear Diary", much as Funeral For a Friend has with their last two CDs.

I'll be interested to see in what direction they go since Sonny has quit the band. Although its sad to see the original singer leave the band it could also lead to a much different sound then the 2nd CD which is what they really need.

How did such a good band get such a worthless vocalist?.......2007-03-04

The grand majority of the music on this album is refreshing and inventive. Sadly, it's nearly impossible to listen to the songs, thanks to the absolutely atrocious lyrics and vocal delivery. There really is no poetry here, only infantile ramblings that would receive rolled eyes from even the most uninformed of listeners.

This release is a great one. However it does not compare with the original "Dear Diary, My Teenage Angst has a Bodycount" It seem almost all of the tracks are filler tracks and the entire album must have been spit out at the last minute. That being said the band From First To Last is still very talented both musicaly and lyricly.

This album was amazing, great for many emo kids! But I'm not emo. My favorite tracks are "Mothersound", "The Latest Plague"(of course), and "World War Me", I liked listening to the bass lines at the solo in the end of "Mothersound". "Latest Plague" was catchy and my most favorite!! And "World War Me" was incredible, I wonder why some people think this song in just OK? "Waves Goodbye" was very different from other songs, more soft and more of techno. It's kinda unusal that FFTL combiners their music of emo, hardcore, and techno. But I still love this band!

This album was tremendous! A lot of emo and more screaming! "The Latest Plague" and "World War Me" are the best tracks in this album.

1."Mothersound" 10/10- Yes, a ten of course, with really nice solo at the end and great chorus! Usually, in From First To Last's songs, they usually sing then stop a while, but in this song, Sonny sang for a long time and then there came some guitar works.

2."The Lastest Plague" 11/10- I had to give this 11 out of 10, first of all, the chorus was amazing, so catchy! Love when he first whispers, and then he screams out "so don't you PLAAAACE!!" The drumming was good, and so were the guitars.

3."... And We All Have A Hell" 10/10- The intro was amazing! I heard that this song was about rape or being raped. I love when Sonny sings fast in some parts.

4."Afterbirth" 9/10- This was a beautiful song, sounded sorta sad since he's singing that he just figured out that he was adopted. I really love how the ending sounded.

5."World War Me" 12/10- I just had to give this 12 stars out of 10, there were more screaming than in any other songs they've ever made. This had the catchiest chorus. The drumming was amazing at the ending.

6."Shame Shame" 9/10- The intro was great! But the chorus was kinda boring.

7."The Crows Are Coming For Us" 9/10- The chorus was okay, the intro had drumming in it. Love when they go "you walk on water, you sing that lovely tune".

8.'The Levy" 9.5/10- This song was OK too, but I don't understand why sooo many people love this song?! This song is like everywhere where you check out From First To Last. There's nothing special, Sonny barely sings in here, many parts were soft and silent, it's just the ending that got my attention.

9."Waves Goodbye" 2/10- This was the world's worst song in this album!! I HATED THIS!!! This album would be better without this song. this sounded more of techno and more like pop.

10.'Waltz Moore" 9/10- I really like this song, this was kinda addicting, and the chorus was good too.

11."Heroine" 7.9/10- This was so-so, Sonny's voice sounded louder and slower in here, it's just the chorus that I only liked.

This was a great album, sometimes it could get a little boring, the drumming was amazing! The guitars were great! Love Sonny's singing! I just love this band!

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).
