On Vehicle, singer-songwriter Sam Bisbee writes wry pop songs with a cerebral twist, similar to Ron Sexsmith, Rufus Wainwright, and Matthew Sweet. His laconic delivery, coupled with the loping, gently rocking backdrop, invites you into his ironic world, where the mundane and the lovesick intertwine in suburban hell. Songs about lawnmowers ("Ride 'em mower with my Walkman on, listening to my favorite song"), cubicles ("I want to touch you in your cubicle, I want to touch you in your space"), and bucket seats ("When you're in my bucket seat, you can put on your favorite MP3") are sung with clever detachment, suggesting equal measures of affection and disgust. This is the world Bisbee knows, and his funny observations and warm melodies give it a patina of interest--though he seems revolted by its vacuity, he also accepts it as his source of inspiration. Bisbee contributes guitar, synth, bass, and piano, each supporting his plaintive voice and oddball lyrics. --Wally Shoup

Product Description
Introducing Sam Bisbee, the brand new, grizzled, wide-eyed, overnight, veteran newcomer whose Vehicle has finally arrived with windows rolled down and a stereo pumping Bisbee's familiar yet completely original sound (echoes of David Gray meets Pete Yorn meets U2 meets REM meets Talking Heads meets Elvis Costello) out into the Manhattan air. Sam awoke one morning to the realization that he never wanted to make a DEMO ever again. So he called up some friends (engineers, producers, musicians...) and made this, his debut solo album. "It just happened," says Sam. "And it is the album I've always wanted to make. I made it in a bubble.. No A & R personnel within a 5 block radius. No mention of taking things to 'the next level'. Just music. Pure and simple. For music's sake." Luckily for Sam, the 'friends' he called (all of whom contributed their talents for next to nothing) were not your average friends. Pete Keppler was in the middle of engineering David Bowie's upcoming release when he received a call from Sam. Leona Naess was working on the follow up to her critically acclaimed freshman release on MCA when she heard Sam's voice on the answering machine. Charlie Drayton (Neil Young, B-52's, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop..) was playing an all-star gig when Sam's email scrolled across his cellphone screen. Peter Adams had just come off the road with Tracy Bonham and was on the way to Boston to back up Juliana Hatfield and Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo) when he ran into Sam on the street. John Wolfington was about to go to Europe to promote his freshman release on Sonic Youth's Smellslike Records but Sam insisted he bring his guitar and pedal box to the studio. Scott Jacoby, bleary eyed from an all-night session working on a J-Lo remix, couldn't say no. Philip Glass's legendary Looking Glass Studios opened up the doors of Studio B for a price that had Sam wondering how they paid the utility bills every month. Steve Addabbo let Sam use his Shelter! Island Sound's storied recording room for free during down-time. Dave Wike and Dan Green, Sam's core rhythm section, were by his side through it all. It took 10 months. Sometimes as long as 6 weeks would go by in-between times that the studios were available. Elation. Despair. Frustration. Catharsis. All the ingredients were there. Finally, the day came when Sam paid a visit to the final friend on his list, top mastering engineer Emily Lazar. As he spilled the 30 tapes onto her desk Emily thought (out loud): "This is gonna be a mess." But then she heard the music. "This was far and away the best thing Sam's ever done AND the best record we've had in here all year," Emily said. "We were blown away." Now it's your turn. Here it is. Shrinkwrapped. It comes with a seatbelt. And it comes with a world that rushes by windows that you can roll down to let the wind blow back your hair. Take a listen and you'll see what we mean.

If only for Vehicle, it's worth having. A very mature tune for such young guys at the time.

5 out of 5 stars A Tremendous "HORN-ROCK" Record that was Overshadowed.......2006-08-29

In the glory days of horn-driven rock bands, such as CHICAGO, B,S,and T, Chase, and Lighthouse, the "Ides of March" were probably the most underrated and least appreciated of all the bands in that genre. Originally, IDES of March was more of a sixties garage-band, based in the Chicago area. They even scored with a few hits when they were in their mid-teens!! ("You Wouldn't Listen" and "Rollercoaster" to mention a couple.) By 1969 they added some trumpets and a sax, and it was a whole new sound for them!! Vehicle was recorded in a radio broadcasting studio so the sound quality was going to be a mystery. However, the sound quality was just fine for a record recorded in 1970. Vehicle went on to be a monster hit but the LP went on to medium sales. Now, that being said, this album was one of the finest records of the early 70's. Each song is full of life and the ballads are beautiful such as "HOME". in which Jim Peterik
delivers a emotional message that sends shivers down one's spine. "Factory Band" is a fun rocker that gets your feet stomping, and that's followed by "The Sky is Falling", which really shows off the powerful horn section. "Wooden Ships", (the old C,S. and N song) finishes side one. The IDES version is even better than the original in my opinion. ( I know, How dare I say that against the legendary C,S, and N!!!) But, the Ides version is excellent! Side two features the excellent "Aire of Good Feeling" which definitely puts you in one. (It should have been the follow up hit, but rumour has it that WB wanted another Vehicle rip-off for a second single. That being "Superman" which is on their second album. "One Woman Man" is another beautiful ballad on this side. Jim Peterik's voice is so awesome and it is amazing that he was only 20 years old when he recorded this album!! Hey, if you like 70's horn rock, do yourself a favor and buy this one before it disappears forever. The LP went out of print and I was fortunate enough to buy an extra copy because my first one was worn out. Buy and enjoy!! This CD is a lot more than just VEHICLE. By the way, their second LP, "Common Bond" is fantastic too!! That is also still available.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-05

Now this CD of Bo's I loved! More of what I think he should do. Left me wanting more.

4 out of 5 stars Bo makes the best of an underwhelming single.......2006-09-17

The token 'Idol' singles are like a tradition, which each season's singles being cheesier than the last's. Unfortunately for Bo, probably the most ridiculous 'Idol' single was given to him and Carrie: 'Inside Your Heaven.' Though the lyrics don't make sense, I not only enjoy Bo's rendition but I prefer it to Carrie's (and this is coming from a Carrie fan).

1) 'Inside Your Heaven' - 7/10 - Although it has a nice sound to it, the lyrics are so nonsensical that the song loses all potential of being a classic. Bo's vocals are pretty good, yet that's probably it for positives.

2) 'Vehicle' - 6.5/10 - Yes, Bo is moreso in his element on this track, but it still isn't great. Not great, but still listenable.

It is sad what the 'Idol' producers did with him by trying to make him something he's not. You can dress a monkey up in human clothes, but at the end of the day it's still a monkey. With that said, Bo does the best he can with the material provided and I can only hope he escapes the grasp of Clive & crew so he can be taken seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Bo's best songs from American Idol.......2006-08-09

Bo's rendition of Vehicle was one of the highlights of American Idol 4. His version of Inside Your Heaven is significantly better than Carrie Underwood's, and should have won him the show. If you like medium rock, you'll adore Bo as much as I do!

5 out of 5 stars good voice.......2006-08-04

I just love katharine mcphee, she is my favorite, this gentlemen has a great voice I enjoyed his songs, beats the hell out of taylor hicks.

5 out of 5 stars Bo at his Best.......2006-06-25

I love these two songs and am happy to have them in my collection.

(sound tribe)Sector 9 is the best jam band that I came up to in recent light years. They have this kind of space travel journeys through the musical expression.I don't agree that repetition is their mark, yet unexpected changes might be.Once they hook you up to one rhythm and melody thing, they turn you on with a superb change that floats into another direction, but perfectly fit to what they were doing before.Very important thing is to say that if you haven't heard them live, then you can't judge at all.Their live recordings(although even albums are live too!) are like feeling of love all the time. This album is their first studio work and it is amasing,as they twisted the funk all around. My favourite is Hubble because that song really evoke acid trip on space travel.Other songs are great too,and all of them are total hits.Try them if you dare to explore.

    5 out of 5 stars SPLASH NINE.......2001-07-08

    Hello -

I wanted to write this review b/c of previous ones which criticized the band's "Mushy" lack of tightness and repetitive qualities. I almost did not buy this CD because of those reviews, but I am glad I did.

I believe that the "Mushy" quality comes from the taping, not from the band.

It is as if the instruments were recorded on the same input level, who knows if this was intentional. It is a good thing b/c I think David Murphy is a decent bassist. And it is not such a bad thing with headphones, because the guitar is on the left, keyboards on the right.

But the drummer's hi-hat is very loud, and opens more frequently on higher energy jams, masking the conglomerate sounds with a loose 'splash'. It is a little too much, almost as if he had just finished reading a book on 'Pensacola's Funk Technique for the Hi-Hat'.

I actually think it would work if the audio engineer had toned down the drums from an 9 to a 2, and the keyboards from an 9 to a 5, if that makes sense. I do not think I have ever heard such a loud and busy hi-hat as the one played by Zach Velmer on this CD.

So the previous reviews criticize this band for sounding "mushy". I think that criticizing the band because of a 'poor' recording is like not tipping your waitress b/c the chef burnt your steak...just not her fault.

I do agree with the previous posts regarding repetition. In this recording, Sector 9 had a tendency to overplay the rhythmic tunes they developed. I would not exactly call them melodies. Imagine 3 bars of a tonal phrase, and on the fourth bar add a button. Frequently on this CD, Sector 9 did this several times to each phrase before starting a new one.

In a way the organized structure sounds too restrained. It is as if the band members have become trapped inside their own creation.

But this is such a subjective call, because I think this is a 70's/80's Rock-Jam philosophy, and if you listen to this CD, then I think you will understand what I mean.

In my humble opinion, Sector 9 is a really solid group, and I would gladly see them on stage. I would buy this CD again, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes instrumental jams, and 70's/80's Rock.

    2 out of 5 stars Needs Tightness.......2001-04-02

I'm a fan of the jambands and I really enjoy electronic music. I heard these guys were really influential so I bought this album. Most of the songs drag along on one riff and it gets really repetitive, especially when the drum fills don't come in right. That happens way too much on track one. "Four Year Puma" grabbed me because of some interesting bass playing but one good track is not enough, It doesn't sound to me like there was a lot of time put into this. There are electronic bands out there that use a main riff as the theme of a song but it sounds really good, they put more sounds into their music and the rhythym is tight. This rhythym on this album is loose, the person who said that it sounds "mushy" I think is right on. A lot of times it sounds like everyone is playing over each other. Try music from Tortoise or Slide Five.

    Album Description

Introducing Sam Bisbee, the brand new, grizzled, wide-eyed, overnight, veteran newcomer whose Vehicle has finally arrived with windows rolled down and a stereo pumping Bisbee's familiar yet completely original sound (echoes of David Gray meets Pete Yorn meets U2 meets REM meets Talking Heads meets Elvis Costello) out into the Manhattan air.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, this is the album with the song GM uses in their spots.......2006-03-28

I love this album, and the song Bucket Seat, in paricular.

I do a radio show that has been airing spots from General Motors. Lots of listeners have been searching for that song that GM used in those commercials for awhile that had the words:

    Tell me where you are
And I will jump into my car...

Well, I finally contacted my good friend, Toni Simonetti, who is the head of Corporate Communications at GM. She wrote me back with the answer: the song was not created specifically for GM and their commercials, it was licensed from an album that's several years old. The song is called Bucket Seat, it's sung by Sam Bisbee, and it's available on this CD,

    Enjoy.

I have seen Sam Bisbee twice in concert at my college and this album really captures his love of music. He combines a lot of different types of modern and classic rock and makes it his own. His lyrics are fun and interesting. His music isn't catchy which makes it fun to listen to over and over. His CD is constantly in my stereo, along with Bruce Springsteen and David Gray.

4 out of 5 stars best kept secret in the music industry.......2001-11-21

this is cerebral rock and roll at its finest.
Sam Bisbee writes rock melodies and lyrics
like no other. It's like waking up from a 10 hour nap
and then having that feeling all day long - his
    music transcends the medium.

Nine well crafted, powerful songs. Arranged with great attention to detail, and performed with an intensity and physical prowess that is second to none. What can I say? The lyrics are compelling and full of imagery, emotion and obsurity. The instrumentals take riff based music to a whole new level. The tunes are catchy enough to grab your attention, yet complex enough to keep you comming back for more. This is art music with a very appealing edge. Spend the time to get into this recording and you may be surprized at what it can give back.

    Outside Inside Atlantis

A news bulletin caught my eye just days before I started on this review. "Atlantis discovered in Ireland". My philosophy remains the same as it was since the fourth grade. Scientists do not know everything. Now, many decades later my theory is that Atlantis may not have been an island in the North Atlantic, or a supposed salt marsh in Spain or even a real place. After listening to Eric McCarl's new album Atlantis Lost, my theories may have been confirmed.

Solo piano composer Eric McCarl gained notoriety with the release of his first album, Seeking the Light Within, the first episode in his Trilogy of Light series. In the second installment, Atlantis Lost, McCarl musically brings to vivid life emotional and spiritual concepts that have remained dormant for more than twenty years.

The first cut, The Runner, is a call to action as the story unfolds. Peril draws near and our Mercurial messenger has but a short time to give the cry of warning. Over craggy rock and sandy shore the runner presses on to the city of Atlantis. There is an incredible sense of urgency in the music as McCarl draws from Mozart's Symphony #25 in G minor. The music has that "silent movie" feel to it that raises an alarm and that paves the way for the forthcoming action.

Atlantis Lost, the title track is one of the longest and best cuts on the album. It is a wonder how McCarl can get so much music out of one piano. The song is a contemporary number with threads of emotional nuance woven throughout. Although we still do not know exactly what cataclysm befell the great paradise of Atlantis, we feel the incredible sense of dispossession. It is as if the pointed finger of some unseen god has poked a hole in our own universe only to let escape all of our sense of well-being. Could this be what Adam and Eve felt at the loss of their paradise? As I listened to this song, I could not help but think of all the people in Florida who were victims of hurricane Charley. I cannot even for a moment pretend to understand their pain of loss.

The track No More Tears is extremely emotional. Forlorn in its minimalist arrangement, it is a melodic depiction of regrets and goodbyes. It suggests to us that we must move on. Our world has collapsed around us and yet there may be some hope. Perhaps in the new dawn's amber light there may be something more.

Tell Me Why is one man's search for the answers. Twenty years ago when McCarl originally wrote down these notes he could not possibly have known that today he would be searching for the answers to some of the same questions he had as a younger man. As in the fall of Atlantis, man questions the very wisdom of the gods, or when towers are destroyed by hurtling jetliners or when one man's life is taken by terrorists for a crooked concept of justice. Maybe if we had the right questions? Tell Me Why is my favorite cut on Atlantis Lost.

The epitome of introspection, Lost At Sea is a symbolic look at where we are today. It is an observation as to the state of man's affairs in our world. So many of us seem to be foundering in a rough sea of confusion, but luckily, the music gives us a bit of direction. We may be lost at sea, but for the way home or for some of the answers, we might only have to look inside our selves. To me, this is what McCarl's music is all about. As in his previous work, he suggests that we are the source. Our inner strength and our faith are the essence that keeps us buoyant.

A sense of yearning is evident in Eric's contemplative finale Far Away. There is a lightness to it that is less obvious in the rest of the album. Perhaps it is a respite after a stormy occurrence. It is calming like the first golden rays of the sun as it peeks out of the ocean. It is like the first sip of a cool drink of water. Unfortunately, it only makes us want more of the same and sometimes it is... far away.

Eric McCarl's second offering, Atlantis Lost, is refreshment for the weary spirit. Using a highly polished mirror made of music, our vision is turned inward as we struggle for the answers. His music reinforces the fact that we are stronger than we think and there is more hope available than we know. Atlantis Lost is different from Seeking the Light Within. In some ways it is more sophisticated, yet it remains complimentary to McCarl's overall theme.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-08-23

"Atlantis Lost" is the second release in the "Trilogy of Light" series, and is made up of music pianist Eric McCarl composed twenty years ago. He had left a lucrative job in the computer industry to devote all of his energy and time to composing this music. In the liner notes, McCarl writes, "Atlantis Lost represents a great leap of faith, and maybe more so, my personal conversations with God at a time when everyone around me told me that my beliefs were unjustified." Overall, the music has a sense of very deep inner exploration and reflection. While much of it is rather dark and pensive, there is always a sense of hope. McCarl's style is difficult to categorize - a good thing, I think, in this cookie-cutter world. There are jazz and classical influences as well as new age, but it's not really any of the above. As a youth, McCarl studied many different musical instruments as well as the piano, and that experience shows in his musicianship. All fifteen tracks are solo piano, and the piano sound itself is gorgeous. This music begs to be listened to carefully and thoughtfully, and weaves a story that deserves to be heard. It isn't dinner party background music. Structured enough to feel composed, and yet improvisational enough to feel free and spontaneous, McCarl does an exceptionally good job of making both approaches work together.

The first three tracks are on the upbeat side. "The Runner" is full of energy, and makes it easy to visualize someone running on a beautiful island. "City of Light" is almost carefree - warm and contented. The title track is more tragic. Very open and improvisational, it conveys a deep sense of loss and questioning. An affecting piece, this seems to be McCarl at his most soul-bearing. "Victoria" is a quiet beauty - melancholy and searching. "Silhouette in Red" is a favorite. Built on a very spare melody line that wanders throughout the piece, there are some jazz and even some blues touches. "No More Tears" is reflective and bittersweet. The darkly mysterious "Symphonique" and "Tell Me Why" are also favorites.

Eric McCarl's is a unique and promising voice in the world of solo piano. With his message of peace and hope while at the same time "waging war against ignorance and injustice," may his voice be heard and understood. Recommended!

I first discovered Eric McCarl's music on solopianoradio.com. The cut that caught my attention was "Lost At Sea". So haunting, so beautiful. I wanted to know who was playing that piano and I wanted to hear more. I e-mailed Eric and was grateful to hear that Atlantis Lost was on its way.

    And now it's here.

Atlantis Lost guides the listener through many genres and many emotions. There's sweetness and sadness and searching and strength. There's the sensitive piano touch of a gentle soul beautifully mixed with new age, classical and even jazz-blues fingerings. There are also heart-crafted chords that focus and build much like one would focus and build the strength necessary to pursue a goal or a dream.

There is something different about Eric's music...something that made his sound stand out from all the other amazingly talented pianists on solopianoradio.com. I have yet to put my finger on what it is that's so wonderfully unique about the man's music but I'm more than happy to keep listening to try to figure it out.

And I invite you to listen too.
