The Liberation Blue "acoustic series" is a real treat: they've invited Australia's premier songwriters to revisit their catalogue in three or four days of recording on mostly acoustic instruments, with minimal production. This format has consistently brought out possibilities and nuances that weren't there in the original releases. In a word, the new versions are mostly far surperior to the originals.

That's especially true of Stephen's "Close Ups," on which every rendition sounds definitive. It's as if these songs should never have been played any other way; a stunningly beautiful collection. I bought this album having only ever heard "Fell From A Great Height" by Stephen, in the duet version with Toni Childs. Driving home in heavy rain with the CD in the car stereo, the music sounded like the perfect soundtrack for the atmosphere, and I kept listening continuously for days.

Since then I've listened to much of his recent work and realized what a versatile and interesting musician he is. His last two studio albums (Skeleton Key and Love-O-Meter, despite the nondescript title) are basically perfect works, which may be best compared to Marc Cohn's albums, in terms of the intensity and subtlety of writing, although Stephen has his own style. "Close Ups" is the ideal entry to this music, and you won't stop there. It may be off the market soon - it would be a shame to miss out.

This CD will appeal to anyone who wishes to be transported to a world where the humour was more gentle amd the popular music less frenetic.
Paddy Roberts, who had considerable success in the Tinpanalley of the 1950s as a songwriter (Lay Down Your Arms, Softly, Softly), was also an entertaining performer of his own witty songs. One suspects it was this side of showbiz he favoured -- his piano, a small backing group and a literate audience who appreciated his pithy sense of humour.
Although lacking the devestating wit of Noel Coward, his songs are nevertheless charming reminders of an age gone by. The lyrics are always well-considered (no sloppy rhyming of home/phone or time/mine here) and he sings his melodies in an understated but precise manner, relishing every syllable. Particularly successful are his mock English folk songs -- The Ballad of Bethnal Green and The Belle of Barking Creek -- and I also loved his gay (in both senses) ditty Lavender Cowboy, who had only three hairs upon his chest. Amongst these quirky pieces, he throws in the odd poignant one, such as Growing Old, or the hilarious A Short Song (all 32 seconds of it). Another oddity is his rendition of I Want to go Home (aka Sloop John B) which he sings in his cut glass accent which bears no hint of his South African roots.
This CD consists of two LPs, and for me, the first, more intimate one, is more enjoyable than the second, where he was joined by a larger (8 piece) ensemble. But Paddy Roberts deserves to be remembered in his own right and this CD is a fitting tribute to a talented and amusing songwriter.
