Cleveland's role in the history of punk (and by extension, alternative rock) was well-documented in Clinton Heylin's book, From the Velvets to the Voidoids: A Pre-Punk History for A Post-Punk World. The city's most famous exports, of course, were Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys. Less well known but equally inspirational was a circle of friends from Columbus who played in a variety of very different but equally weird bands, including Mirrors, the Electric Eels, and the Styrenes. This compilation rounds up 29 tracks recorded by these groups from 1972 to 1976, most of which display a fascination with Velvet Underground-styled rock & roll and industrial noise making. Echoes can be heard in everyone from Jon Spencer to Sonic Youth; just check out "Annie" by Mirrors. And the liner notes are as good as the music. --Jim Derogatis

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2006-10-31

has a good amount of crap, but some hot tracks make up for it. I bought it for the good electric eels songs (which are worth the price), but i found out the mirrors are really good, and velvet undergroundish. But now that its on itunes, I'd probably recommend just buying the good songs on from there.
