With no shortage of murderous lovers, women of sin, and Eden-like downfalls, these are dark dirges masquerading as ditties. First in the Archive of Folk Culture series issued by the Library of Congress in 1942, Anglo-American Ballads publicly premiered field recordings under the direction of Alan Lomax. Gathered primarily in the rural South in the '30s and early '40s, these recordings (like FDR's WPA initiates) documented everyday life. In their current incarnation, the objective has not changed; the recordings are captured with their intentional departure from commercialism intact. While the accompanying booklet details the history within the history, the songs betray the influences of Elizabethan England and all the British Isles, as well as the Appalachian-dwelling Scotch-Irish from whence much distinctly American music comes. Not easy listening, the ballads vary from the melodious warmth of E.C. Ball's "Pretty Polly" to the reedy scratch of Mrs. Texas Gladden. --Paige La Grone

A Treat!.......2001-06-14
The only thing that would have made this a better recording would have been additional comments from the recorded individuals as to where they learned the songs, what year it was, and how they learned the songs. I grew up hearing similar versions of many of these songs. It was truly a treat to have copies of the recordings made by Mr. Lomax in the field. I can now listen to these while I read through his books.

Worth getting for Adrian Rollini's hot solos..........2000-09-23
Though Fred Elizalde & His Anglo American Band, weren't as hot as say McKinney's Cotton Pickers, or Jelly Roll Morton & His Red Hot Peppers, however they we're a very jazz oriented dance band, and they had the greatest bass sax player ever Adrian Rollini, who gets lot's of solo space on this generally excellent and remastered CD. This set of good 20's jazz is recommended mostly to Rollini collectors and 20's hot music fanatics.
rollini makes fred great.......2000-06-21
In the late 1920's Fred Elizalde was blessed by having the greatest bass saxophonist in the world come to England and join him in the band. As usual, Adrian Rollini, that great bass saxophonist I am speaking of, knew how to turn a good swingy jazz band into a great jazzy band. He did when he was with the California Ramblers, and he did when he joined Fred's band. If you had to listen to just one number on this cd, I would reccomend Crazy Rhythm.Just listen for that great bass sax of Adrian Rollini, and you will agree Fred was quite lucky in getting him to join. His presence makes the difference on this cd for sure. If Dick Clark was asking me to rate this cd, I would give it a 100, or in amazon terms a 5 stars rating. "Adrian-Fred needed you and that great bass sax of yours." A+++++++++++++
Swing Jazz.......1999-12-16
Great music of the past - Dont lose it. This is the music the Big Band era came from. 1920's REAL jazz ; swing bands, stride piano, and Dixieland all had it's beginnings with this music. Fred Lives!

Duplicate of 'Early American Choral Music, Vol. 2'.......2004-02-21
Please note this CD is identical to another His Majestie's Clerkes CD, "Early American Choral Music, Vol. 2 (Anglo-American Psalmody: 1550-1800)" but with a different cover and name! I bought both and was irritated to discover this. The other version is cheaper, so I would suggest getting that one.
Great recording reissued.......2003-03-22
This is great choral singing, and if you missed it in this incarnation, all is not lost. It has been reissued by Harmonia Mundi's budget label, Classical Express as "Early American Choral Music vol 2 Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800". Texts of the songs aren't in the booklet but can be downloaded from the label's website.

Like its predecessor, Anglo-American Ballads, Volume Two presents oft-sung tunes as performed by unsung singers. Culled from the 1943 Library of Congress series Folk Music of the United States, these 10 antique tunes were gathered by a team of folklorists headed by Alan Lomax. The likes of Hazard, Kentucky's Justus Begley and Salem, Virginia's Mrs. Texas Gladden are hardly polished performers, but their naturalness adds character to these mournful ballads. Extensive liner notes, lyrics, and old photos add still greater appeal to this fascinating package. --Steven Stolder

priceless.......2000-09-20
These recordings are beautiful gems, taking as back to our roots and remembering that out culture is indeed a beautifully diverse melting pot.
As always, one can expect A-1 quality on these recordings, as is true from practically everything Alan Lomax made.
Listening to these tracks will better tell the tales and the review better than I can. Any lover of American roots music will be enthralled by this disc and the rest of the collection that goes with it.

Album Description
After a half century as a musician and approaching her 70th birthday, Peggy Seeger understands that a good song of any era will survive as long as long there's someone with the knowledge and understanding to sing it. On "Love Call Me Home," Peggy's 21st solo album and the second volume in her "Home Trilogy," she presents ten traditional North American songs and two new original songs. Volume 1, "Heading for Home" (Appleseed, 2003), had the same mix of old and new songs, and Volume 3, provisionally entitled "She's Coming Home," is already in the pipeline.
"I love new songs, yet I still find myself returning to the old ones," Peggy explains. "Songs handed down to us by singers who loved and tended to them, as I love and tend to them for those who come after me." It is these songs that shape Peggy's "Home Trilogy."
It is not an idyllic world that Peggy presents here. There are murder ballads, stories of fidelity beyond the call of duty, journeys into the supernatural, tales of romantic betrayal, laments of the incarcerated, and historical mysteries. The two originals that bookend the CD are as topical but traditional-sounding as any she has written in her prolific career. "Sing About the Hard Times," in which "Life gets harder every year / Those with the least have the most to fear," could be a 19th Century lament before referencing jobs outsourced to Mexico while workers get drawn into an unpopular war. The title song, written for a friend of Peggy's who died of cancer, closes the CD with a tender and philosophical glimpse of a life winding down and then out.
Peggy's clear, ageless vocals and crystalline performances on banjo, dulcimer, autoharp, guitar and piano are enhanced by the participation of her two sons by her late husband, England's revered songwriter/activist Ewan MacColl. Calum and Neill MacColl are not only co-producing the "Home Trilogy" but also act as directors, chorus members and instrumentalists; daughter Kitty MacColl joins in on backing vocals.

Original and Energetic Celtic Rock.......2005-05-18
With The Big Dream, Homeland really brings out their individual as well as collective talents. From the first song, 'Homeland', to the last traditional instrumental,'Smack the Piper', this CD will have you soon singing and clapping along to it. Scott McGillivray, the lead singer and leader of the band contributes his strong vocals and songwriting talents, showing off his range in songs as 'Can it Be' and 'Hold On'. Their fiddler, Ric Smith, does a fine job with the traditional tune 'Morrison's Jig' going into an original 'Allie in the Morning' - by the end of these tunes, the listener is left exhausted from tapping their feet to the tempo created by Smiths' playing. Bringing up the back beat are Rob Koogler, the bassist, who lends his strong support, especially in 'Hold On', where he carries the song out with his strong basslines, along with Trent Crace, who's powerful drumming is felt all throughout the CD and carries the listener into the songs rocking and reelin' - one almost feels exhausted as he is at the end of a live set.
While The Big Dream is Homeland's best effort, with mostly original material, the band is best when alive on a stage, whether it's at your local pub, or at a festival. Recordings do not do justice to these four talents from central Ohio. The last three CD's they have released, A Night at the Pub and 10,000 Miles Live, show off they way they can take a tradional song such as 'Leaving of Liverpool' and make it their own, with their own twisted combination of energy and originality. In their live shows they are very much audience oriented, often encouraging sing-alongs and clapping as much as possible.
My advice to you is to purchase The Big Dream, I am postive that you will not be disspointed. Let yourself get carried away for at least the duration of the CD, and check them out when they are in your town.
Not your grandmother's celtic!.......2004-12-05
Quite honestly, there are a few tracks where you have to stretch your imagination to hear the celtic influence at all. No matter. They classify their music as "energetic rock with a celtic edge." I consider it my caffeine substitute on the morning drive to work, and refer to it as "head-banging celtic". Either description is accurate. Whether it's their arrangement of a traditional tune or their original material, the songs are all unmistakably Homeland. What does that mean? A lot of heart, a lot of soul, and a lot of hard-driving energy.
These four talented musicians (guitar, bass, fiddle and drums) meld into a tight, cohesive unit -- and the results are a sound all their own. One could make comparisons to more established bands like Tempest or Seven Nations, but that won't quite paint the whole picture. Homeland manages to take their sound and bend it various ways so that you have a CD where the tracks -- traditional, original, vocal, instrumentals, slow, or rocking - all fit nicely with each other, and yet each song has its own unique personality. While there is such a thing as the "Homeland sound", there is no such thing as "Homeland homogeneity"!
Want an example of a traditional song getting the Homeland treatment? Rather than yet another marching version (not that there's anything wrong with those) of "Donald McGillivray", you now have a slowed-down, fiddle-infused, more dramatic and intense telling of the Scottish story.
Their original songs contain lyrics of hopes and plans that may not have -- or might still -- come true, if you apply hard work and faith. Simply put, the pursuit of "the big dream". The Homeland boys definitely put in plenty of hard work and faith. And we listeners get to reap the rewards.
If you like this album, I highly recommend that you visit homelandmusic.com to pick up their live CD ("10,000 Miles") not available on Amazon.com. And if you ever get a chance to see this band live -- do so!! Their style seems even more suited to live performance than recordings. Be prepared to be blown away! (If you have sensitive ears, take along ear plugs as the volume is always waaay up at a Homeland show!)
