Customer Reviews:
Love this guy.......2007-01-10
The classic Nik Kershaw, with all my old favorites. His newer stuff is good too, but these have the nostalgia factor to send them over the top.
Might as well have bought the single.......2006-02-22
Although there are some good covers available on iTunes, one can't get the original "Wouldn't it be Good?" unless they buy one of these Kershaw compilation discs and this was the cheapest one! Because they are "imports", some cost upwards of $20.
His very best songs as a singer songwriter and performer.......2004-01-05
This is a compilation of Nik Kershaw's best songs. Having been underrated as both a songwriter and performer, these songs give a nice overview of the various hits he's had and the variety of styles in which Nik kershaw can be recognised.
Who doesn't remember megahits like "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", "Wouldn't It Be Good", and "Riddle" in their orginal setting? To your surmprise, you may find there's a lot more great Nik Kershaw songs, each of them as original and well produced as all of these near powerpop megasellers.
Although it does't cover songs from his latest CD's, it is good to hear litle masterpieces like "Bogart", "Wild Horses" and especially "Radio Musicola" which shoud be played loud on a solid stereo. The lyrics being what they are, from sometimes endearingly naive to sharply sarcastic, every song is a gem.
If you do not own any of Nik Kershaw's music, this is a very good start. It will get you asking for more. Rest assured, there is lots more on the Nik Kershaw CD's, including his latest ones. Nik Kershaw been one of the finest songwriters and best producers of powerpop material since the middle eighties.
Still very much underrated. This is the proof of the pudding.
Nik Kershaw's Back with a new compilation........2000-10-07
I saw Nik in concert in Bristol March 1999 and he was brilliant. This is an essential CD for those who follow 80's throwbacks, which I too follow. I have been into nik since his beginning, have all his singles and albums. All these tracks are on the LP's and are a nice addition to the other stuff.
Keep on rocking Nik and we are all looking forward to Wounded and the New album in 2001......

Essential or a fair collection.......2005-03-10
The key word is essential in many ways. It was a smart move not to call it "The best of" or any of those hokey catch phrases for someone's idea of sample mix.
There is enough Dylan to satisfy just about anyone. The first hand full of songs were also made famous by other singers and you have to get over trying to compare, unless like me it has always been Dylan first. Later you get to the good songs; He may not have personally thought so, but many of the songs struck a cord with me such as "Subterranean Homesick Blues."
To understand most of theses songs it would be best to buy a biography or watch one fro A&E. However with out knowing the man behind the song they will still standout in your mind for years.
Still "The Times They Are A-Changin"
Essential Bob Dylan Import, Six Reviews in One.......2003-10-01
Throughout the years the suits at Columbia, then Sony have tried to make more money of Mr. D by mixing and matching his material, not just in a Greatest Hits compilation, but as a "Best of Import" from Japan, Holland, Sweden, or some other far away place. They tout them as better, different, remastered, a gold version and lots of times they'll build these compilations around a song that hadn't appeared on any other album.
The current favorite is the wonderful song, "Things have changed," which shows up on five different sets available today.
"The Best of series Vol. 1 and Vol. 2" Imports are the only one of the 5 sets that you can get separately and, since they couldn't put "Things Have Changed on both CDs, they put "Shelter From The Storm," from the Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding move "Jerry Maguire" on the first disc. If you were to buy both discs in this set you'd be out over fifty bucks. Of course, there isn't a bad song on the discs, but if you're like me, you already own most of them.
"The Very Best of Vol. 1 & 2" Swedish version has 33 songs on it, all available elsewhere except, of course "Things Have Changed." The songs are about the same as on the other compilations and this one will set you back thirty-three dollars.
"The Ultimate Collection," is of course not the ultimate collection, but it is a collection of 33 songs, very similar in scope to the songs in the other collection and built around, "Things Have Changed." This version will shrink you wallet by thirty-nine dollars.
"The Essential Bob Dylan" double CD set has 30 songs on it and has a nice flow to it. Like the other compilations mentioned here it features "Things Have Changed." You'll have to fork over twenty-one dollars to get this one. It's the most reasonably priced of the bunch, and so it's the only one I'm giving five stars to.
"The Essential Bob Dylan" Import has six more songs on it and it'll cost you 16 more dollars. That's a lot of money to pay to get those extra six songs.
Okay after rounding them up and telling you a little about them, I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed in Sony about this group. Unlike "Greatest Hits, Vol. 2" which like these isn't really a Greatest Hits compilation, these CDs cost a whole gang of money and give us only one new song. "GH 2" gave us a half dozen new tunes, so we (not me, cuz I wasn't born yet) didn't feel ripped off when we bought it. Also, the "Biograph" compilation was stuffed with new songs. Ah well, my recommendation would be to buy the American version of "The Essential Bob Dylan" for twenty-one dollars and shine the rest of them on. Five stars for that one, four for the rest.

Pick this one over the American version.......2003-02-27
Pay the extra $...bucks and get this version over the American one. The American version is skimpy, with less than an hour on disc 1, and just barely over an hour on disc 2, while this Australian version has over 77 minutes per disc, and includes more of his best material, including "I Want You", a hit that was left off of the American version.
A Great Introduction To Dylan.......2003-01-01
Featuring six bonus tracks (Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?, I Want You, Changing Of The Guards, Blind Willie McTell, Tight Connection To My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Love?), Dignity (Original Version)) this is obviously the superior version.
The haunting Blind Willie McTell, recorded in 1983, stands out better than anything else he did in that era. The original version of Dignity is a much livelier mix than the one on Greatest Hits Vol 3. The snare and the lead guitar are now brought froward, which gives the song more of a groove, and everything sounds cleaner than the sludgy mix on the earlier version.

Producing a steady stream of enduring pop classics over three decades including the hits, 'Cools For Cats', 'Hourglass', 'Black Coffee In Bed', 'Pulling Mussells (From The Shell)' and 'Up The Junction'. Squeeze are as relevent today as they have ever been, if not more so. Customer Reviews:
The Essential Don Johnson.......2007-04-02
I was quite suprised to find Mr. Johnson has a very good voice, I really enjoy this album.
A Sexy Voice.......2007-03-20
*Sigh* What can I say? Don Johnson's sex appeal seems to ooze from the songs... a few songs are not his best, but tolerable with his voice. If you like Don Johnson in any way acting or singing, buy the cd... it has that 80s sounds with sex appeal. This just might be your secret.
Astoundingly Good.......2006-09-16
I bought this CD on a lark because I had seen the videos for Heartbeat and Tell It Like It Is on youtube.com, and I have not stopped playing it since it arrived. I have always loved Don's voice, but put to music, it is even better. Some of the songs have that decidely 80's sound, but others, such as "Tell It Like It Is," "What If It Takes All Night," and "Can't Take Your Memory" are timeless. His voice is perfectly made for the slow ballads and simple love songs. After hearing recently that he is planning on recording again, I can hardly wait, and I will be one of the first to buy.
Don Johnson -- The Essential.......2006-08-29
Although this album is hard to find, it is worth the chase. I always loved Don Johnson, not only is he a wonderful actor, he is an amazing singer. The album "The Essential" has 16 great tracks. Even after all these years, the song "Heartbeat" still gets me singing, this album is definitely worth ordering, no music collection should be without it. Its Jazzy, bluesy, rock, love songs, it's a lot of music genres rolled into one. It has something for everyone on the album, every single song is a hit. Why Don didn't have more hit albums through the years is beyond me. This album proves he is a talented and gifted artist in many ways, both in film, tv, and music. Definite collection piece for any music lover.
Better than expected!.......2006-08-08
I always liked Don's song 'Heartbeat' so I picked up this CD for that song and for the pure novelty value of it. I was pleasantly surprised! My favorite track may be 'Tell It Like It Is' - really great song.
In the 80s it seemed like all singers wanted to be actors and all actors wanted to be singers. Don is one of the only actors turned singer that is worth listening to!
This is just a good CD, plain and simple. Don should have recorded more than two albums.

Customer Reviews:
Bubblegum? Sez Who?.......2007-04-22
Lesley Gore had her first hit in 1963, at sixteen, with "It's My Party, and I'll Cry If I Want To." (The president of the studio where she'd been working had warned her not to be too disappointed if it wasn't released.) But "It's My Party" was a great big, instantaneous hit, being played on New York's WINS, WMCA, its most popular rock and roll radio stations, one short week after it was recorded/released, and hitting #1 on the national charts six short weeks later. It was quickly followed by "Judy's Turn to Cry," "That's The Way Boys Are," "She's a Fool," and "Maybe I Know." And, before you knew it, Gore was the biggest solo female hitmaker of the early 1960's. And, seemingly, she was chronicling a high school girl's angst. So a lot of people considered her music to be bubblegum. Nevertheless, she had, still has, a big, beautiful pure voice, with a lovely, soaring upper register, and a dynamic delivery. Just was lucky enough to catch her in person; she still has that great delivery.
And she was already an accomplished musician at 16; she was discovered, through several piano demos of hers that were circulating, by none other than celebrated jazz master Quincy Jones, who acted as her producer for the first several years of her career. So let me remind you, Quincy Jones is not generally considered a bubble gum kind of guy. For your further consideration, this collection includes the melodic "California Nights," and "Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows," from this early phase of her career; their intonation and phrasing are clean and crisp, almost jazzy. You'll also find "You Don't Own Me," collected here; generations of high school girls have had to grow into this one. The scope of her music, in fact, solidly illustrates the fact that Lesley Gore never was strictly a bubblegum chronicler of high school heartbreak: she always had more on her mind.
Sweet Innocence.......2005-10-02
Lesley Gore embodied the teen angst of growing up and navigating the turbulent waters of young love. She was hugely popular with girls and boys. She was either your friend or your girlfriend and everybody felt they knew her. Her wonderful songs captured an innocence that would soon be lost for the youth that adored her as Vietnam loomed like a dark cloud on the horizon.
I've had several of Lesley's albums over the years and almost everything that was great about her is here on this one. It is the perfect blend of bubblegum and teen sincerity. I pop Lesley in whenever I'm feeling a little nostalgic and it never let's me down. She was beach parties and surfers riding the big wave, going steady and having your heart broke for the first time. From the upbeat and melancholy to the sweet, this one covers it all.
Good music can come in a lot of forms, and this is definitely good music. It's easy to listen to and will leave you feeling better than you did when you put it on. How much music do you own you can say that about? We'll surely never see this blend of youth and innocence ever again, but it certainly is nice to know we can go back and remind ourselves what was great about the 60's.
You'll have difficulty finding anyone who doesn't like Lesley and you will also if this is your first listen to her. It's more than worth the purchase price for this much enjoyment. You don't want to miss this terrific music.
Still a "Gore"geous sound.......2005-09-08
Lesley's early 60s girl-group sound is showcased in this CD like the jewel it is. The vitality of songs such as "Look of Love" and hard-to-find "Summer and Sandy" bring us back to a fun, innocent, idyllic time and time and place we dreamed of during a turbulent decade. Rock on, Ms. G!
All the essential hits and most of the minor ones.......2004-09-28
Even in her American homeland, Lesley didn't have many hits. In Britain, she only had two hits (It's my party and Maybe I know) and only the first of them is famous. Nevertheless, compilations of her music continue to be released at regular intervals.
This particular compilation has all the essential hits, these being It's my party, Judy's turn to cry, She's a fool, Maybe I know, You don't own me, Sunshine lollipops and rainbows, Look of love and my personal favorite, California nights. Most of the other songs here were minor American hits -minor in terms of chart placement but major in quality. You know the way pop music goes - once singers are deemed unfashionable, radio schedulers ignore their music.
Selecting a compilation among a choice of several is normally a tricky business. With Lesley, it's simple - the cheapest is the worst and the most expensive is the best, with the prices of those in between reflecting their quality. So (for example), this compilation is superior to the 12-track 20th century Millenium compilation but not quite as strong as the 30-track compilation, Start the party again, which one of my friends has reviewed. The only way to improve on that is to go for the double-CD (Anthology, now apparently out of print) or the 5-CD boxed set, both of which I reviewed a long time ago.
With 18 tracks, this compilation is probably just right for most people seeking Lesley's hits of the sixties.
Pure Talent.......2000-12-05
This Lesley Gore collection really shows that even in her early teens, this girl could sing! Besides her choice of materials to record, all the arrangements are full and compliment Miss Lesley's voice and style. This collection reflects her hits but she was and is so much more then just the hits. Any recording by Lesley showcases a gifted and talented singer and a superb master of her voice. I feel that in today's market, she can show these new arrivals what it is all about. All they really have to do is listen and they will learn. I give this CD collection 5 stars!

Michael Ball, the Best Ever.......2006-11-10
This Michael Ball 2 CD set is unbelievable. All I can say about Michael Ball is that he is the best entertainer on CD or DVD that has ever come along. That says everything about his talents, voice and presentations.
Ahhhhhhhhh.......2006-09-19
What can I say... Michael Ball's voice just cannot be compared to anyone else. This cd is just one more example of his talent.
The Only Michael Ball C.D. You Need In Your Collection!.......2005-12-01
I am SO happy that Michael Ball released this C.D. and the music on it more then makes up for the expensive pricetag. The songs are the C.D. are the hits from a combination of Michael Ball's C.Ds... and the C.D. has EVERY song any Michael Ball fan would ever want to own in their collection.
His romantic and stunningly beautiful version of "All I Ask Of You" is my personal favorite... as well as the song that changed his life and brought him to superstardom in England "Love Changes Everything." There are also two songs Michael Ball wrote himself-that aren't realesed on any other C.D-"Someone Else's Dream" I found very powerful and inspiring.
Michael personally chose his favorites as well his fans favorites- including a ton of non-Broadway music that reads a breath of fresh air... "Song For You", "The River", and "What Love Is For" manages to stand out in this EXCELLENT C.D. collection.
If you haven't bought a Michael Ball CD yet then this is DEFINATELY the CD to own! Any true Michael Ball fan will be grateful that they made this C.D. and any true Broadway fan will be grateful for the CD as well.
5-stars for all of Michael's BEST- Definately worth the PRICE... Hit the buy now button on your screen and don't miss out on this WONDERFUL C.D.!!!!
ND.......2005-11-08
I am kind of disappointed because Micheal is probably my favorite vocalist, but he doens't come out with many new stuff...All of his CD's seem to be regurgitated songs, although this compliation has some of the best ones. I wish he would come out with new interpretations of songs on both sides of the pond.
Brilliant singer-actor.......2005-09-23
With frequent work on stage productions by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and others, it may be that Michael's acting career is more important than his singing career. However, Michael is a fine singer as this double-CD clearly proves.
Reflecting his dual role as singer and actor, this set includes many stage songs, rightly opening with Love changes everything (from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Aspects of love), which gave Michael a UK number two hit in 1989 and remains his only really big hit.
Michael came second (the fate of so many UK entries) in the 1992 Eurovision song contest but it only just made the UK top twenty in the singles charts. He has had other minor UK hits but they are not included here.
Some of the songs here comes from shows in which Michael has acted including Empty chairs empty tables (from Les Miserables) and the title track from Phantom of the Opera, although Michael sings it here with Lesley Garrett, whereas in the show his co-star was Sarah Brightman.
The remaining songs include covers of other artists' hits (Always on my mind, Cry me a river, If tomorrow never comes) and stage songs (Tell me on a Sunday, Tell me it's not true, All I ask of you, Oh what a circus).
This is a brilliant compilation of music by a singer who has made only a limited impact on the singles charts but whose albums always sell well and deservedly so.

Excellent Album!.......2006-06-21
All of what Steve does is good... I love these early songs just as much as the songs on "Transcendental Blues" which is a creative leap forward to my ears, but like I say, it's all good when Steve Earle makes music and as far as his politics go, he can speak his mind all he wants to and I would still buy his music, even if I didn't agree with him. So shout it out Steve, I got not problem with Americans having their say and that goes for the Dixie Chicks too. This is America, land of free speech, that's one thing that makes our nation great!
this one has all of the best Steve Earle.......2006-03-21
I love Steve Earle, and this one has all of his best. These songs are the absolute greatest! You will sing along with this CD at the top of your lungs. Watch out if you are driving, because this CD will make you drive way too fast! This is the direction country music SHOULD have gone. You can play these songs over, and over and over. They are addictive.
Before He Became A Puffed Up Liberal.......2005-10-07
When I was younger, Steve Earle was one of the coolest dudes around. He was a real rebel who rode the fine line between Springsteen and and the 'twang of Rockabilly. He didn't quite fit in anywhere, and this album gives you a good introduction to that sound of a former rebel.
It includes the hit, "Guitar Town," which is probably my favorite Earle song. Other good tunes here include "Copperhead Road," "Nowhere Road," and "The Devil's Right Hand." Also worthy of note are "The Week of Living Dangerously" and "Good Ol' Boy."
After Earle cranked out these good tunes, he went and opened his mouth about politics. Steve, dude, shut up about politics and play your tunes. I don't pay to hear the priest give a homily, so why should I pay to hear your opinion. Natalie Maines opened her mouth and now the Dixie Chicks have nothing to look forward to but tree-hugging gigs until the end of time.
You're too talented to waste away in politics.
Get this album folks, it's much better than Earle's later releases and bundles up his best tunes into one neat package.
A real country outlaw.......2004-09-21
Steve Earle is the real deal. His songs are hard edged tales of love, lust, alcohol, and guns. While some of the tunes here may be a bit too country for fans of "Copperhead Road" (My own intro to Earle's music)give it a try. This man can tell a story and he'll convince you he knows what he's talking about. Listen to the restless soul on "Someday" and you know this guy is the goods. As mentioned in another review, this one's just a sampling of Earle's early work. Try it and see if it will lead you to Earle's later work where the edge just increases as the talent matures.
A Good Introduction.......2003-11-22
Having grown-up preferring rock to country, I'm often drawn to those artists who fall in that "not really rock/not pure country" category. For me, Steve Earle is one of those artists. His personal life has seen him delve dangerously into the excesses which befall many artists (country and rock) - going way out on many ledges and managing to pull himself back in from the brink of disaster or even death. While his lifestyle may seem extreme and be painful for fans to watch, there's no doubt that it's yeilded some excellent songs. His ability to tell a story and make you care about the characters in these songs is comparable to Bruce Springsteen or the late Johnny Cash.
This collection is culled from Earle's first three albums ("Guitar Town", "Exit 0", and "Copperhead Road") plus a couple of tracks he contributed to the "Planes, Tranes, and Automibiles" soundtrack. All of the important tracks from those first three albums are here, including "Copperhead Road", Earle's first real crossover to rock radio. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to become aquainted with Earle's work without buying all of his albums. This particular collection is now out of print, but the recently released "20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection" is nearly identical to this one. While he may be too country for some rock fans and too rock and roll for those who only like country, if you appreciate finely crafted songwritting, you'll enjoy this album.

Definitive single disc Paul Young collection.......2004-08-01
British pop/soul singer Paul Young has a few compilations in his catalog so "Essential" may not totally be necessary at this point, but if you have none of his recordings in your collection and are looking for a comprehensive single disc with all of the hits, then this fits the bill. It's also the largest collection of his on one CD (totaling 18 tracks), unless you count Sony's release compiling his first two and best albums: No Parlez (1983) and Secret of Association (1985). Young's first two albums do represent his peak, but that collection is obviously not career spanning so several gems are left out that are included here. A total of 8 tracks come from his first two albums and start off the disc. Of course the lead off track is "Everytime You Go Away" (used to great effect in the John Hughes film: Trains, Planes & Automobiles) as it should be. Amazingly, a previous Paul Young collection, Simply the Best (2000) didn't include this song which is ludicrous considering it's his staple tune. Essential includes some tracks that didn't appear on Young's proper albums like "Senza Una Donna" and his take of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" (from the "Fried Green Tomatoes" soundtrack). Three of the four songs from the "What made Otis Blue" single are included as well as a few interesting covers like Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" and Dusty Springfield's "I close my eyes & count to ten" (live version). Perhaps the most interesting cover of the collection is the closing track, Joy Division's immortal "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (First appearing in studio form on Young's debut, No Parlez). The song is represented here also in a live version which may not totally matter to you unless you're like me and like to have all studio versions of songs in a collection. Obviously Young adds his pop/soul flavor to the song and as expected, it can't touch the original Ian Curtis classic, but it's still interesting to hear the different take on it and it does sound good. Then again, Joy Division created such a beautiful song there that any take on it might be worthy of a listen. Bottom line: Essential covers all the territory of anyone who seeks Paul Young's best in a neat package and doesn't need to have all of his albums. *****

CE CE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-25
I love her music, I even was lucky enough to meet her in the early 90's at the WIZ store in the east villge.(Which no longer exists there.) I had sweaty palms when I shook her hand, it was a beautiful moment, and I greeted her mom who is also beautiful as CE CE Peniston is. I love all the music on this cd, buy yours today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a very essential collection!.......2003-10-25
I own this CD and I mainly bought it because of how many tracks there are on this, as I already own her "Best Of" album which only has 13 tracks (but great dance mixes and new photos made Best Of worth the purchase). This album Essential is very good. It has all Ce Ce's greatest hits including "Finally" (original '91 mix), "We Got A Love Thang" (Radio Party Mix), "Keep On Walkin'" (Radio Mix), "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" (West End Radio Mix), "I'm In The Mood" (Bad Yard Club Edit), "and "It Should Have Been You" (LP Edit). The rare versions of her popular hits make this CD worth the buy, and the fact that you get 18 tracks! A complete full collection of her essential hits! If you don't own any of her albums, then I strongly recommend you pick this one up today! You can only get this CD online. I believe the stores don't have it, so make essential your next buy!

I bought this album because there are 4 hard-to-find radio edits to "Finally," "We Got a Love Thang," "Keep On Walkin'," & "Keep Givin' Me Your Love." All the other tracks are right from CeCe's 3 albums.
