1 out of 5 stars HORRENDOUS.......2004-08-19

Holy you know what! Maybe she should have been singing "Desperado". This is so unlistenable it is frightening that it is from Sheena. Having just purchased her entire CD catalog I figured - why not - let's see what she does with these.
It's a daunting job in the first place - but it is downright embarassing. I don't need to point out what is so "horrendous" about "fabulous" because it's just simply an awful product from an incredibly talented artist. Listen to "A Private Heaven", "Do You" (very underrated), "No Sound But A Heart", "The Lover In Me" and "What Comes Naturally". These showcase Sheena. Once again I have to ask - who the hell manages her career?

4 out of 5 stars Catchy Euro-Dance/Hi-NRG Music.......2004-08-10

This is a good album. Sheena's voice is best when her voice flows natually & not trying to pull off robust diva-esque vocals.
The best songs & my favourites here are "Giving Up, Giving In", "Love Is In Control", "Get Here to Me", "That's What Friends Are For", and "You Never Gave Me The Chance. Lovers of club/dance music would enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars Almost FABULOUS !.......2003-10-04

Sheena Easton is a vocalist who left a massive imprint on the era of the 1980s. Her vocal sound was clear and unique. A media darling that did benefit from prominent exposure during the early days of MTV.

It's nice to hear her return to the musical arena. Her vocals remain strong and have more texture. However, her attempt to register a chart comeback falls on deaf ears. The main problem with this CD is that it has been tailor made for two specific markets. (1) Disco lovers and (2) Gay audiences into kitch.

The producers should have realised that both audiences are die hard fans of GLORIA GAYNOR, DONNA SUMMER, THELMA HOUSTON and THREE DEGREES. It's highly unlikely Sheena could convince them to abandon their vinyl copies of the dancefloor anthems and audition her rendition of those disco classics.

Unfortunately, due to the highly restrictive musical focus on this project, SHEENA comes across as a "GRADE B" version of KYLIE MINOGUE and GERI HALLIWELL (both of whom cannot sing, while Sheena remains a vocal powerhouse).

1 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2003-03-26

I've been heard all these songs for long terms. All the decade for these songs. When listen to the radio including KOST 103.5 or
K-BIG 104.3 FM. Also I see you on the video of What Comes Naturally, Strut, and Sugar Walls all I know your move, emotions
and your song. Because you have a beautiful song of the request.
Therefore, Sheena you wrote your own song of the pop rock all the sound. Can you send a ticket,I can go to hte Las Vegas Hilton
to meet you on the backstage for signing autograph and CD. That your song for decade.

3 out of 5 stars Not That 'Fabulous'.......2001-08-17

After a seemingly endless respite from the public eye, Sheena Easton resurfaced(at least in Europe)with this album of primarily disco covers. Though the idea was well-intentioned, it would have been so much better had it been more well executed. The song selection is flawless, but unfortunately the production reduces such classics as 'Best Of My Love' and 'Don't Leave Me This Way' to middling Europop fodder, with the few exceptions being a muscular reworking of 'Giving Up, Giving In'and a pretty good take on Gloria Gaynor's classic 'Never Can Say Goodbye'. Also unfortunate is Easton's voice, which has lost much of the nuance and range that marked much of her eighties work, and now just sounds thin and strained. It doesn't help her cause that the production often swallows her whole, with the background vocals sometimes heard over Easton herself. This is a project that will probably appeal only to Easton fans alone, as there are only a few standouts here.

5 out of 5 stars That's Enough!!!.......2002-08-08

My dad had this record while I was growing up. It was one of only two or three that I was allowed to put on the turntable myself. I listened to it all the the time. At about age 8 or 9 I started getting into Rock n Roll (the Beatles, Beach Boys, Who, etc.) and this record kinda just disappeared from the the stack of records we had. I hadn't heard this record for over 30 years. I recently found this compilation on Amazon and ordered it immediatley. I could'nt believe how much I've missed these tunes. 'Run Softly Blue River' sounds so beautiful still. That opening 'C' note on the electric guitar still makes me cringe. It was Johnny's guitar player ( I think it's Luther Perkins on this one) that turned me on to Rock players like George Harrison and Keith Richards. And Johnny's voice...........Oh my god, WHAT A VOICE!!! For me, this record is where it all started. My love for Rock n Roll music started here. Say what you may, but this is an early Rock n Roll record. I highly recommend this one.
From the song 'That's Enough': "(I've got) I've got Jesus(Johnny) and that's enough (that's enough) THAT'S ENOUGH!!!

I'm delighted that those two are finally on CD together. These are the first two albums JC released at Columbia in 1958/59 and still two greatest ones alongside BItter Tears and Unchained. Some Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Ritter spirits on it and this CD is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you wanna start your J. R. Cash collection

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Songs.......1999-07-23

Songs of our Soul is one of the earliest Columbia albums that Johnny did after leaving Sun Records. I have it on vinyl, and there are some absolute though rarely heard classics such as Hank and Joe and me, Drink to me, Great Speckled Bird etc. If you like Johnny, and you like that old time country style with the Jordanires-type background singers, this one is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2005-09-07

I would recommend this CD for any Sheena Easton fan or any fan of dance music. The songs are fun, mainly uptempo and very catchy ("Love is in Control" is my favorite). The few ballads on the CD are quite good as well (but they do seem a little out of place). However, Sheena seemed to have a blast recording this CD and it shows....get it and enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars The title is passé compare to the recording: PHENOMENAL!.......2004-05-10

My friend Jamie turned me on to this. It led me to Las Vegas to see her live. Sheena Easton is FLAWLESS!

4 out of 5 stars Twirly fun from Sheena..........2003-04-13

Sheena Easton is one of those performers who can sing utterly horrific material and still be interesting. Well, maybe not, there is her abysmal "Do You" album to contend with. But back to "Fabulous": It's a well-produced collection of disco songs, with Sheena charging through such high-energy fare as "Don't Leave Me This Way," "Best of my Love" and "Love is in Control." Three original tunes are featured: The very Cher-ish "Get Here to Me" and a pair of lovely ballads, "You Never Gave Me the Chance" and "That's What Friends Are For" (not the Dionne Warwick song, thankfully).

Sheena seems more like a hired hand on this project than the actual creative force behind it. After all, has anyone ever seen her dance in concert? Not a pretty sight. This really is more of a producer's album than a singer's. And as far as that goes, Sheena's voice sounds strained on some of the tracks. That's probably due to age; "For Your Eyes Only" and "You Could Have Been With Me" were recorded 20 years before this disc. Still, despite its flaws, this is a likable project. You'd rather hear Sheena in the studio creating something original, but hey, if she wants to be world's best karaoke singer, that's her perogative.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!.......2002-04-18

What a fantastic album. I've listened to it over and over again. What a treat to hear these songs freshened up like this so that they almost sound new. The string and orchestral arrangements are absolutely brilliant......Congratulations everyone involved!

5 out of 5 stars GOOD TO HAVE SHEENA SINGING DANCE MUSIC.......2001-09-11

THIS IS A VOICE THAT CAN SING STAGE SONGS, ROCK, POP, BUT LET'S FACE IT SHEENA IS MOST AT HOME SINGING DANCE SONGS AND THANK GOOD, THIS IS A GROWP OF FUN SONGS AND SHEENA SINGS HER HEART OUT. GOOD TO HAVE HER BACK DOING WHAT SHE WAS BORN TO DO.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It really is FABULOUS!!!.......2003-02-22

Compilation CD's aimed specifically at the gay market are usually hit and miss affairs. Often they can be filled with wonderful, uplifting tracks that stir our emotions and fill us with an elated feeling of happiness and a sense of belonging. Sometimes though, they are nothing more than cheesy affairs packed to the brim with 'gay athems' and monotonous dance beats put out onto the market to sell a bucket load and therefore earn a profit. Fortunately, FABULOUS falls into the former catagory.

The Sydney 2002 Gay Games were a huge success. Gay men and women from all over the world came to Sydney not only to participate in their sport (or artistic endevour), but to also come together as one big family and make new friends and share experiences from other cultures. The music on this CD, from the opening ceremony, has been carefully choosen to reflect that sentiment.

The tracks on this CD are:

You gotta be (Shauna Jensen) - A wonderful beginning to the CD, this track explores becoming aquainted with your own emotions, dealing with them, and no matter how hard life seems to get, 'love will save the day'. Starting from a slow, pensive mood and working up into a mellow dance beat, this song is very inspiring.

You'll never walk alone (K D Lang with the Sydney gay and lesbian choir) - A track recorded exclusively for the CD, I had tears and goosebumps by the end. A very inspiring and uplifting song that gives the message that there are others out there that share your emotions and experiences.

Sexual Revolution (Leah Howard) - starts from a slow tempo and building up to a wonderful uplifting dance tempo, this explores the concept that we are able to be free amongst ourselves in our own communities, which is a wonderful liberation when dealing with other negative stigma in our lives.

Why (Bronski Beat) - very eighties, but very danceable and inspiring with an important message about first love, coming to terms with internalised homophobia and fighting homophobia.

This is my life/I am what I am (Judi Connelli) - Judi is a very successful and well respected cabaret/musical theatre performer in Australia with many many years in showbusiness. It is wonderful to hear her sing this medley of these 2 empowering sounds, pouring raw emotion into them. Judi's classical voice combined with modern dance beats provide a song that is very uplifting.

Suffragette city (Paul Capsis) - Paul is an alternative cabaret artist/rock musician and actor here in Australia. He is not afraid to challenge the 'norm', and on this song we have pure rock with a 70's feel dealing with themes of being 'on the edge' - of not only straight society, but within the gay community itself. He asks for tolerance for being individual....which is a trait becoming less acceptable in the gay community where labelling people and trying to 'define' them is becoming a way of life.

Dali Mana Gamarada (Deborah Cheetham) - a very mellow, atmospheric and relaxing song to promote internal reflection and meditation. Starts quietly and builds up with a dance track. Has a wonderful 'world music' feel to it...

Celebration (Kool & the Gang) - the original 70's 'get up and party' anthem. Appropriate for the gay games and the times in our lives when we should be celebrating ourselves and each other.

Shackles - praise you (Mary Mary) - modern dance track dealing with the theme of 'breaking free' and inspiring to be yourself. A wonderful track to dance to.

Free (Ultra Nate) - a more mellow dance track, with the theme of being 'free to do what you want to do'. Obviously the target state of being for all gays and lesbians everywhere - overcoming our inhibitions and internalised homophobia.

Think (Aretha Franklin) - I think everyone has heard this song at least once! The ultimate empowering song giving encouragement to stand and fight for the right not to be discriminated against and trying to get others to take responsibity for their discrimination.

I'm every woman (Chaka Khan) - a classic dance track, inspiring to lesbians and gay boys who worship female icons. Dance and be free!!!

I Believe (Jamestown feat. Jocelyn Brown) - another dance track about reaching out and giving your love to others and being receptive to love from others. Very appropriate in the gay community as we seem to be heading towards a direction of crass commercialism and uncaring attitudes.

A Deeper Love (Clivilles & Cole) - somewhat of a 'dance music ballad', this explores the theme of learning to love yourself - learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all (as Whitney used to sing!)

We are family (Sister Sledge) - another 70's track, and one that perfectly sums up the theme of the gay games and the gay community in general. Despite our differences, we are connected through our sexuality and hopefully we can get over our current state of segregation to become a loving, caring, sharing 'family'.

I don't think I have ever come across a CD containing a more diverse set of tracks that are so uplifting and inspiring to gays and lesbians everywhere. Listening to this CD will have you forgetting your blues and making you smile - and hopefully thinking more about yourself and your fellow gay brothers and sisters.
